Meet the Scout, one of nine playable character classes in Team Fortress 2.
Name: Scout
Role: Offense
Weapons: Scattergun / Pistol / Baseball Bat
The youngest of eight boys from the south side of Boston, the Scout learned early how to problem solve with his fists. With seven older brothers on his side, fights tended to end before the runt of the litter could maneuver into punching distance, so the Scout trained himself to run. He ran everywhere, all the time, until he could beat his pack of mad dog siblings to the fray.

This might sound silly, but I think it's because the people at Valve are artists at heart, they care so much about their creation to add details that go over most peoples heads because creating these games isn't just a job, it's also a passtime.
I feel a lot of AAA game developers and publishers obviously lack the passion Valve has for their characters and worlds. I watch all these EA and Microsoft clips from E3 and behind the scenes videos that go on and on about how passionate they are about their craft, and how this game that blends with the others is gonna blow your mind, but Valve don't need to go on and on as much as them, and when they do tbey actually have something to SHOW for it.
It's been made clear that Valve sees the medium of videogames as an art form, most big buck corporate developers see it as a way to make the most money as quickly as possible.
The most unfair thing is how people who work at companies at EA who do very much care about their craft are always restricted by time and execs breathing down their necks. Valve know better than to rush art and I really wish that more companies knew that.
I'm super sorry if I rambled on for too long, this just kinda got my blood boiling sorry.
