  • Life on H1B has many ups and downs, but I had a kick ass journey.
This is a video that summarizes my experience while on H1B. I found it interesting that my journey touched upon most challenges that H1B holders faces and the changing political climate that is resulting in lots of people having to make major life decisions especially those on H1B. I hope this video opens up a new way of thinking about what is at stake when getting into the H1B lifestyle.

Very true man......this is something especially aspiring H1b's and recent graduates from US universities should be aware of (Indians and Chinese mostly).
The old sequence used to be......
Come on F1, then OPT, then H1b, then wait for few years to get GC and eventually citizenship.
This chain is totally broken, more so for Indians. This is something still not understood by vast majority of students community who are bee lining for US in droves. Dont get me wrong, US is great place to study and research, but if you are expecting long term stay in US would be a peaceful existence , you are in for shock of lifetime.
This has nothing to do with current political scenario, this is not something Trump did, its been like that whole of Obama era, some extent Bush era gift for the legal immigrants.
You are lucky in 10 year span you faced job related vagaries only twice, that had direct impact on your H1b. US is land of hire and fire, to speak bluntly. Being on H1b, waiting year on year for GC, loosing job is like being pushed back to square one each time. Imagine loosing job 3,4, or 5 times, you may redeem yourself few times, but how many times?

How many times can i do this? -> that my friend is the question i asked myself. So at this moment, i feel i am not losing much leaving the US. I might come back on EB-5 as an investor in the future should i choose to but never again as a H1-b.

It is a risky program with no guarantee for a Green Card. I researched the numbers. The number of I-829 approvals is lower than the number of i-526 approvals. Lots of Chinese / Taiwanese have got burnt already playing that game. Indians are more shrewd I hope they do research and be really really careful. Google Jay Peaks EB-5 scandal.

This never happened to me, it's your choice. Actually, I have found Indian managers in US more exploitive, and I avoid them. This happens to people, because they let them do that to themselves. This is not an insult, rather an observation; most of our fellow Indians are act subservient deuces - no self-respect.

Your mind and heart follow you wherever you are in the world. Indian pride is just as much an illusion as black pride, indigineous pride, dog pride, or white pride.
Designations that "I am this body, I belong to this family, I am a man, or I am young are across the board the most ignorant trap we humans can maintain.
It is only when we get out from under material conception of life that we can be truly happy and successful in this short life.

I'm staying in USA on H1B for only one reason, no one can beat the salary I'm getting here.
I'm just a Senior Software Engineer here in wall street, NYC, but my comp is 270K per year (220 + 50 bonus)
Even I'm not able to find jobs in USA itself paying more that this as a Senior Software Engineer, In other FinTech companies this is the salary of Architects, even some CTOs are working on similar salaries. By the way I never tried companies like Google, Amazon etc, because I love FinTech. No.. I'm not a wolf :-)
My plan is to return back to India by 2023 and I'll be having log of money by then, so I'll start something of my own, even I'm working on my idea from last 2 years

I'm pretty much in the same situation and I'm planning to leave too, and for exactly the same reasons :) It doesn't make any sense for Indians to stay in the US anymore beyond say 3-6 years of H1B work. A 20 year wait in pursuit of a green card on such a restrictive visa is saying goodbye to all your dreams and potential opportunities.
If I move back to India, I can live a freer life, possibly earn more over a 20 year period, try out new businesses, get out of a job temporarily for a sabbatical, and be with my family and my own people! Or if I don't want to move back to India because of, say, infrastructure/corruption/resource issues, I'd choose a country that is more welcoming to skilled immigrants (like Canada or New Zealand).

Life is a compromise - You cannot put FREEDOM (from what?) on one side of the balance, and Comfort (material or mental?) on the other side, and try to see which one is better!!! One must know that there are other professions in the US, other than the IT industry, where immigrants have been well treated and they have been happy for decades. I respect the opinions and perspective of the author of this video, which is about the "life and ordeals of being on H1B", and I agree with them in concept. A philosopher once said that one is a first class citizen in his native country, with a questionable quality of life, but when he goes to a foreign country he has to endure a questionable status as an immigrant, with a very high quality of life. Each one picks which is best for them and that is life.

I like your attitude , and I respect people who respect the fact that we as indians are actually immigrants outside and we should let host nation decide on rules of immigration .
I personally would never like to move to US/Canada just because of the fact that there is no job freedom , i have lived in 3 european cities and also been to america and I do not see any reason why i should not live in europe than in US
    a) salary are maybe 10% less than US
    b) work life balance is 40% better than US
    c) Much closer to india for visits
    d) Easy passport (max 5-7 years from day you come in)
    e) Once you have passport you can work or move anywhere in EU
    f) People are very nice (depends on country but still overall)
the only issue is Salary and Bigger tech firm that are still based out in US , once they start to over headquaters , there is no reason to be in US

I am an American-born Indian who has lived here my entire life and I can honestly say that if I had lived in India I would have never moved here. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love it here since it is my home and in a way I would feel like a foreigner in India if I moved there now, but there is something honorable about choosing your own nation, your own people and your own culture over the rootless, materialistic, superficial lifestyle that modern America promotes and sells as the innocuous 'American Dream.'
Here is the brutal, honest truth: There are many smart Indians no doubt but companies are interested ONLY in profit and will throw Americans to the curb when they have the opportunity. That, however, is only the surface-level explanation of what is going on.
The REAL reason Western countries are importing millions and millions of foreigners (low and high skill) is because there is a hostile elite running the world which is hell-bent on replacing the WHITE, native population in these countries. This is exactly what is going on in Europe: A two-pronged approach of legal, high-skill immigration (to take out the White, middle-class) and mass migration of Muslim 'refugees' to replace the rest of the White, lower-class will be enough to completely change the demographic makeup of these countries. And demographics are everything; the native population of a country is responsible for the circumstances (good or bad) of the country. If these people are replaced, it will cease to be THAT country anymore. France is not France if there are no WHITE FRENCH just like India is not India without INDIANS. Everything else that is going on in the world will slowly start to make sense once you understand this.
I suggest you go back to India where you can be free from the turmoil that will eventually manifest in the coming years. I know that India has its problems as well, but you will be among your own blood, your own beautiful culture which has a spiritual tradition that has influenced the entire world.
    Take Care

I'm already back in India, all I can say is after almost half a year living in India. I can neither identify myself as fully Indian, or fully identify myself as anything else. The only new enlightenment I got is, the ability to leverage India to generate capital to be put to use in acquiring wealth overseas. The way i see it, I might end up using both places for my growth simultaneously.

I feel bad for Indians who come to this soul-less spiritually adrift wasteland. They will undoubtedly find themselves better off materially but won't be able to shake the ennui that's swept the nation after decades of elite plundering. @@nsb6703 Endurance and sacrifice at what cost? 20 years is a long time to wait for a GreenCard.
For instance If I rent out a property and get $10,000 returns per month. By the 9th year assuming 15% increase in rent every 3 years, we would still observe a divergence on rent vs inflation(assuming inflation at a constant 6% per year), that is why leases are made for 9 years.
So you see value of things change with time. Waiting for 20 years to get a green card is highly unproductive. Not even long term leases are made for 20 years.
I was exposed to that awesome truth after returning to India. It fills me with genuine dread regarding people who are spending their life potential centered around a Green card.
Ignorance is bliss, if they only knew what more they could have done in those years they would end up in depression for sure.
Bottom line is this: Health, Wealth, Happiness and Love are the keys to a good life. If anyone of these is being sacrificed that is an indication of a life goal that is not aligned with oneself.

People in Florida behave some way due to slavery? Consider mistreatment in India based in caste and religion. It's something you can refer to people depending on where you are ( India or USA) to explain.
Being taken advantage of: Sadly it's something too many people do whenever they can. Not just H1B visa. Even look at people in India treating laborers, bargaining for desperation etc. Indians here in this area also hire others who are new here. Has nothing to do with nationality or race. People can be bad everywhere.
Consider you a stranger has another post. People may live here all their lives and still say 'in my coubtry'. When people see me, they say you don't talk with typical Indian accent.

What I was trying to convey was, if an Indian is stuck to the same company banking on getting the GC, the amount of wait time is such that, that person/Indian will probably be sent out of the workforce(age based discrimination) with neither the GC nor a financially independent life, too old to work and too poor to live. It is always better to think about how soon one can leave the workforce and stop working sooner rather than climbing up an illusion corporate ladder with no assets to show at the end of the journey. There are folks who spend time hording assets to retire early and live rich, than those who slog it out in corporate meetings scrum etc only to end up burnt out and disposable.

In general, they might make fun of accent or quirks out of jest and joviality. However, they have their hearts in the right place. I know there might be a few bad apples. One thing I would suggest fellow Indians or for that matter any non-American/Canadian is to immerse in the culture and adapt to the diversity. Sometimes, I have observed that we find it hard to adjust since we cling to all the old behaviors from back home - hygiene, being loud, impoliteness, discourtesy, ungratefulness (no offence) etc. There are many wonderful things we can learn here from a new culture and much more beautiful things we can teach to our new brethren. Be open minded, adaptive and this part of the world will be your oyster for sure.

Hey man! Really appreciate your decision, whatever you choose.
I just want to ask you one simple question and also i want to tell u that this is very strange one:
I just gave my GRE and planning to go usa in Jan19. I have no concrete planning to stay in the usa. I just want to explore my life, and as i always wanted to visit usa, i am now going for my masters.
So my question is If i come back to india after my study of 2 years and 1 or 2 years of work experience, ofcourse i am going to make friends, when i will come back to india and look back at my friends in usa, will they remember as a friend or they will see me as a stranger who came, studied, worked and went. Will they remember me? Like in india your friends will remember you for life.
Will they be useful in my life? As u mentioned and also i have doubt that people there dont have much people-to-people connection.
      What does your experience say?

    • @neoblackcyptron

Friendships built from school at a young age in India are the strongest. The acquaintances that I made in the US are not friends, they are just people who wanted to have a good time and never formed any real connections with me. And no they don't remember me, there is something personal in friendships in India that I find lacking in the US. There is only one decent friend I made in the US a Palestian guy, he was from an eastern heritage like Indians, so we could relate in terms of friendship as his culture is family based just like India. A typical meetup scenario in the US if you go to those artificially simulated meetups where random people meet would be guys running after and girls pretending to be friendly in public just to maintain social cred. Sad but true. A very hollow individualistic society.

Why the rush to be only in America? India is a fine place to live and work. Your parents did it. You will too. The queue is too long not because of bias against Indians but because well... there's just too many Indians applying to run away from India. There's like 85k H1Bs issued per year with 225k applying for it per year. 90% come from and go to Indians. Isn't that unfair to other countries?
Also, India needs to solve its population issue. A billion fewer Indians and India would not need to export so many bright minds.
Also for the US, yes it is an amazing place. But it can also be shockingly third world - even in NYC. Have you seen the shit there? Homelessness? Bad roads? I've seen better roads in Bombay than in NYC.
Also, I think it is time for America to be really considering Americans more than other nations like India. I think the H1B should be shut down for 10 years along with F1 visas. There's enough bright guys in America. Give them a chance first. Also repeal the 14th. That is the biggest attraction for legal and illegal immigration.
We don't need to stupid Presidents and stupid walls. We need a constitutional change. It is a nation of immigrants but it is a nation like India which needs things for itself.
And guys like this guy can do well in their country as well.

You are right. I was thinking why I wanted to come to the US. Thinking backi figured, as long as I have enough money and investments in US, I can travel and live both in India and US or anyother place as long as I visit checking out my investments. I guess Green Card was just going to be an enabler, but I was so fixated on that, I started losing out on the lifestyle that I wanted, which does not need to depend on the Green Card or the citizenship in the US.

LOL a few good roads in Bombay compared to a very small number of bad areas in America. The difference is, the majority of India is bad, the minority of USA is bad.

Vignesh Ramakrishnan you are most welcome. As an update I’m currently visiting the US as a tourist the job market is pretty much closed to h1bs at the moment. The only worthwhile thing to pursue now is form contacts and get work outsourced to India. You’ll make more money than a h1b plus it will be doing a huge favor for India. I’m hoping to bring some jobs back to India.

If you are from Intel you can try the US lifestyle for a change. Since you are a bachelor this is a good time to move overseas to the US. It’s good to come live that experience. Don’t let this video discourage you. My intent was only to set accurate expectations not to discourage you from trying new things. Give US life a shot.

I work in Altran and my client is Intel. I'll definitely try the overseas experience.
But again like you said, I'll try the safer route by opting for Canada or Australia first. So I have something to fallback onto.
      Thanks a ton bro. 👍🏼

Here I am the change you are speaking about. I returned for my product based startup and I am doing well. The market is expanding in India and there can't be a better time than this to do business especially after GST. India is now the south Asian leader in ease of doing business as of Nov 2018. Keep educating people who are sleeping to this truth. Well done.

    • @neoblackcyptron
      @neoblackcyptron  5 лет назад

It is good to know you are doing well. I too have seen destiny guiding me closer to my true calling. It came in the form of orders and projects(simple stuff like Mobile apps and Business Tools) to keep me going after my return to India.. My strategy is to sustain myself with these orders that gives me money to fund my learnings in AR and AI(I should know enough in 7 months as far as AI is concerened to atleast be an employee in that field, however that is not my goal) . It will take me 2 more years of sustained effort apart from 1 year to stabilize what is already going on so far. Let us see if the truth reaches more young Indians, they have a better chance, unless US wisens up and starts giving Green Cards to US international Grads from STEM degrees(which is highly unlikely) till then India will win. I wish you well in your startup, I hope my vision also amounts to making a mark in the next 2-3 years.

I'm sorry to hear that, that was also one of the reasons why this video should help people thinking of staking a lot against this system while coming to the US. You need to think beyond F-1 to H1-B and play the long term game.
