    Great explanations for my new canon Mark ii 7D! Really need to save up for any of these lenses!

    A great lens for the 7dii is the Tokina AT-X PRO II 11-16mm f/2.8 . The image quality is briliant , it is weather sealed , and sells for a reasonable price. It is not stabilised but this isn't really a problem on a fast Ultra wide zoom.

    The 7D II is a crop sensor body. You never mention that or the focal length adjustment when mounting a full frame lens.

    I like the lenses you mention but all the ES lens lengths need to be multiplied by 1.6 on the 7D mark ii as it is a "crop" camera. The ES lengths are only valid for a full frame camera like the 5d mark iii. The EF-S lenses like the 24mm are made for crop cameras and will be the true lengths.
    My favorite would be the 24-70mm which would be around 38 to 112mm. That's perfect for portraits. The 400mm would be a whopping 640mm on the 7d mark ii. Great for wildlife photos. And sports guys like the 70 -200mm because its going to be 112-320mm on the 7D mark ii. The 10 frames per second of the 7d mark ii is the main reason and the f/2.8 is a huge bonus. You get a super fast camera that focuses very fast and you can bring in the action while creating super soft bokeh.
    I will add that I wouldn't buy a EF-S lens. If you ever want to move to a full frame camera you would be buying all new lenses as an EF-S lens can't fit on a full frame camera. EF lenses can fit on both. You just have to keep the 1.6 factor in mind for EF lenses on crop cameras. For example if you want something in an EF lens that's around 50mm you need to get an EF lens of around 35mm when using a crop camera.
    I would like to add one lens to the list. The ES 85mm f/1.8. This lens performs as well and in some cases better than the L version. You can now get them for under $400. It's 136mm on a crop camera and still 85 on a full frame. Both lengths are great for portraits and the bokeh is creamy.

    For the people watching this. You are better off using EF-S lenses on this camera as it is a crop sensor and your effective megapixels using full frame L lenses are not going to be as sharp. The 10-18 and 24mm are EF-S lenses. The only time you want to use an L lens is with super zooms like the 100-400 as it actually gives better results and can get you closer to the subject whether shooting birds or wildlife. L lenses will not produce as sharp images on this camera as they would on say a 6DM2 or 5DM4 because they are not designed for this camera. They will work but are not optimized. Hope this helps.

      That's not quite true. On my original 7D mki using L glass, I've gotten tack sharp shots. The glass does make a difference. My 70-200f/4L, and my 200mm L 2.8 prime produce as good IQ as a FF camera, as well as my 600 f/4. Even better on the mk ii

    I have a few of these lenses: The 10-18mm and the 50 f1.4 -and 'had' the 18-135 (great lens that I actually recommend over the 24-105 f4 L because of its versatility and for being just as sharp, although not as weather sealed. As far as the 50 f1.4, I would actually recommend saving a couple of hundred bucks and getting the 50 f1.8. It isn't built as good but it is just as sharp (if not sharper) and goes for only about $125 on Amazon. One EF-S I would definitely recommend for any Canon crop sensor body is their 55-250mm zoom. Of course I can't skip the 3rd parties and if you want one of the sharpest cropped sensor lenses out there you have to get the Sigma 18-35 f1/8 and if you want to zoom in like a pro, the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary.

    The 100-400mm L is fantastic on the 7d II with its 1.6x to the focal length. You can really push the ISO on the camera to get a decent shutter speed even in bad light.

  • @keith0078

    Mildly surprised that the EFS 17-55 IS USM didn’t make the cut. I use it on my 7D MK II. Very happy with it. I guess if Canon made an “L” lense in the EFS format, this might qualify.

  • @ryan976david
    @ryan976david 7 лет назад +12

    None of the ef lenses you mention will give you the focal lengths or apertures you talk about due to the 1.6x crop factor. At no point did you mention that.

    • @madmanjoe
      @madmanjoe 5 лет назад

      Actually the focal length of the lens does not change regardless of the sensor size. Its the field of view. And the crop factor has to be applied to the ef-s lenses just the same as ef lenses when comparing to full frame field of view equivalent.

    Got the 18-135, it is a great lens for the money, super allrounder. Personally I prefer the EFS 10 to 22mm USM over the 10 to 18mm STM, its a much better lens with the smoother motor. I would forget the 300mm L lens, try the 70 to 300mm EF IS II USM. The 100 macro is a super lens. Good video though.

    Sold my 17-40mm f/4L to buy the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and have never missed the red stripe around the L lens. Never heard of the 70-200mm f/8 but, I do use the 70-200mm f/4L IS as a walk around and travel lens (with 2 bodies - one 7D and one 7D Mark 2). For wildlife and some sports, I have fallen in love with the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens which is a super piece of glass. I like the 12-24mm f/4 Tokina ATX as my primary wide angle. I have not suffered the fringing and flare problems with this lens that many photographers complain about.

      how sharp is the 17-55 f2.8? i have been eyeing that for awhile. it's 17 x 1.6 for a 27mm which at times may be just a tad not wide enough. but it is fast and shar?. i would be into getting it.

  • @markhudson2266

    This camera is built for speed--wildlife and sports. The only lenses he mentioned that are truly useful for those subjects is the 70-200 f/2.8, & the 300mm. Most of those other lenses are for wide angle street togs. I've got this camera, paired with the 70-200, 70-300, 200mm, 300mm, 600mm primes this is a killer wildlife/birding or sports machine. The extra reach due to crop sensor make those even better. Sure, you can shoot street, weddings with it, but with that autofocus and fps, you're wasting what this camera is made for. Just my 2 cents.

      Actually the 18-55 does almost as much as the 17-55 at 10% the price. Plus the auto focus is not as consistent as the 18-55. Also closer focus distance with the 18-55 less than one foot not to mention the weight of the 17-55.
      Images from the 18-55 are just as sharp and focus hits are superior.

    I've tested the cheaper 50mm f1.8 IS STM lens vs f1.4 and the f1.8 is much sharper than the f1.4. If you want an upgrade to the f1.8 then the f1.2 is the way to go, but trust me the new nifty 50 is amazing, especially for the price.
    Also the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is probably one of the best lenses out there for APS-C cameras

    Glad I found your video, I have been fighting with making a decision on a wide angle and now I think I have bc of your video. I will take the 24-70 2.8L for a thousand Alex, LOL. Many thanks for an interesting video.

    • @jonaskeler6687
      @jonaskeler6687 6 лет назад

      The biggest difference lies within the sensor of the two. The 7D has an APS-C-sensor, means a 1,6x crop (you need to multiply the focus length of the glass you're using times 1,6, so good bye ultrawide angle, something like zooming in). But for the same reason you gain a massive amount of focal length when using a real telephoto lens, like a 400mm prime, or the 100-400mm Mk2. Also the 7D Mk2 manages faster shutterspeeds up to 1/8000s (6D is only capable of 1/4000, most times enough for bird-photography but not the best for really fast moving objects). The 6D got a fullframe-sensor (bigger!) so it's better for low-light conditions, more like art-stuff (portraits & plays with field of depth). Additionally you get the real focal lengths that are printed on your glass, if you pair it with e.g. the 24-70mm f2,8 Mk2 you can get great shots at really low light conditions without even thinking of using an external flash that are in fact 24-70mm. You have to know that fullframe and APS-C cameras have slightly different lensmounts, named EF (fullframe) and EF-S (APS-C). You can use an EF-lens on an APS-C system, but not the other way around, EF-S lenses are often made quite, let's say economical, not necessarily worse at all! but not as capable of being a real workhorse. On the other Hand EF-Lenses especially the ones of the L-series are veeeeeery pricey, but pose an acquisition for a lifetime. Of course there are many more differences, but all in all it depends on what you want to use it for: sports- & wildlife-photography -> 7D; Portraits, event-shots, art etc. -> 6D
      Hope all clarities were eliminated, english is not my native tongue *.^

      Just got the 6dii and I love it. You can shoot sports with it but it helps to be closer to the action with 70-200 lens. On the 7dii you have more reach because of the crop. The focusing points and burst speed on 7dii is a lot better but it doesn't matter to me. The 6dii is full frame so you get true focal length. Nothing wrong with getting both which I plan to do. They are both great cameras.

    Hm, some of these lenses (especially the L lenses) are really great. However it should be mentiones that the EOS 7D Mk II is a Canon APs-C body (with a crop factor of 1.6). All these lenses are in a range of 10-300mm - no special lense for a wildlife fotographer! (Ok, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM is a little expensive but a great start for wildlife photography.)

      I owned it for about a year and even took it on some vacations. It was 'ok' on my 7D II, but between that and Canon's own 18-135mm, I would take the 18-135.

    • @ejavenger
      @ejavenger 5 лет назад

      Randy is correct. The 18-135 is one of the best AF-S lenses designed for the 1.6x crop of the 7D2. Put that 24-105 f4 on a 5D4 or 6D2 and it is a great lens with image stabilization and all. The 24-105 will yield 8 effective megapixels on the 7DII and 14 effective megapixels on the original 6D full frame per DXO. There is a reason that we do not recommend full frame lenses on a crop body as they work but do not yield the same results as the EF-S lenses designed for these bodies. Plus the price difference between the two is about half. Hope this helps

    The 1.4/50mm USM is a squeamish bitch. Never got to work properly with the 7dII or the 5dIII. One photo strong backfocus, next strong frontfocus. Crazy! And the tubus can be damaged very easily just in the bag.

    At no point do you mention that the 7DMK2 is a crop sensor camera so all the lenses you recommend will have a 1.6 x crop factor to add. You said the 17-40 was a super wide lens. On the 7DMK2 it becomes a standard 27 to 64mm lens. I use the lens on my own 7DMK2 and it is a nice lens but it is by no means wide angle. You also rated the EFS 10-18mm lens. This is one of the worst lenses I have used on a cropped sensor camera as the barrel distortion at 10mm (16mm full frame equivalent) is simply awful. Sorry but I found your video confusing.

    bro, you do realise that the canon 7d mk ii has a crop censor which means it has a crop factor of 1.6. So, basically everything your saying about the "17-40mm" being one of the best lenses for the 7d mk ii isn't true because 17 x 1.6 = 27.2, meaning that it is no longer a wide angle lens...

    • @randydietmeyer5883
      @randydietmeyer5883 6 лет назад +1

      I shot with the 17-40mm while I still had my 60D and was never really wowed by it. Then I got my 7D Mark II and again, wasn't really wowed by it on that body either. I didn't "hate" it but it never really impressed me. And THEN I stuck it on my 5d IV, which I believe finally did it justice. Actually any fully frame camera will work much better with than lens than a cropped sensor one. (Having said all that about the 17-40mm -which I still own, it has been replaced by the Tamron 15-30 f2.8 VC.)

    I'd put those 25 bucks towards a ultra wide angle lens as it is the one lens everyone should start with, for obvious reasons!

    How much canon 7d mark ii

  • @CarlosGarcia-lh5jh
    @CarlosGarcia-lh5jh 4 года назад

    I just quit Canon, they lost the bearing, trying to convince us that full frame was the logical next step if having a APC-S sensor I got the 7D and the 7d MK II ( nice camera indeed ) the nasty thing are the MK II lenses I posses several lenses among them a 100-400mm USM 4,5-5.6L tried the MK II version, did the comparision at home and the result came up to be exactly the same quality, nothing has really been improved but the weigh and some slots in the hoods in order to move polarizer or and ND filters, the price is awful high with no reason. By the other hand you are attaching a FF lens in an APC-S sensor not mention at all the crop factor that helps in tele lens but ruins the angular lenses, for instance my 10-22 Efs lens turns into a 16-35mm, it ain't fair dealing with a dedicated lens. Cheers+

      I had both the 18-135 as well as Canon's 24-105mm f4 L. I actually prefered the 18-135. It was more versatile and just as sharp -perhaps not as weather sealed though.

    actually, the Canon 100-400 mm lens is better - imo - than the fixed 300mm.
