Hi Ben, thanks for the amazing videos. Please don’t be offended if I say it’s refreshing to see amateur vlogs on here. I have learnt more from your vlogs than many of the flash and over the top vlogs I’ve watched. Please keep up the amazing work and thanks for keeping everything simple 👍👍👍
Brilliant once again Ben. I am very new to wildlife photography and I’m that impressed with your vlogs etc., I’ve just received my Canon 7D MK II and waiting for my Canon 100 - 400 lens to arrive. Looking forward to taking all your hints and tips on board. Keep up the amazing work 👍👍👍
i use the two buttons on the front right handed side next to the lens. i have the top one for the preview image button. so while i support the lens with the left hand i can press the play button with my right index finger to double check images without having to take the left hand off leaving the weight pulling down on the camera to press the stock play button. my hands don’t move from position. the other is when i have the focusing set to group focus for birds in flight. at any time i can hold with my right ring finger the front bottom button to put it straight to centre focus if i see something else thats still
Sounds like you have already got your custom settings sorted :) it's definitely worth taking the time to figure out what works for you, nice stuff man :)
Haha I leave the focusing beep on as its the noisiest bit of my shot being mirrorless but I have turned it down. To be honest I don't I dont know why I even have it on but its part of my whole process and I think my brain couldn't cope with it off! AF Lock (what it's called on my Panasonic) is really useful for focus recompose. 49 AF points is not always enough and I don't really enjoy using the touch screen to get focus so its a nice way to do it :)
Haha I guess it doesn't reallyake much difference then :) I just got used to it from the day I started taking photos 😅 and yeah it is probably the most useful custom setting I have found so far. Being able to lock focus is so handy.
09:40 Hey mate, thanks for this! For some reason no matter what to press I can't cycle through the focus options on that screen. It only moves the focus area (where all the dots are on the bottom screen) but I can't cycle between the top options. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm using three different both wheels and the joy stick buy they all move the same thing. Edit: turns out the m-fn button (close to the shutter) does it. Is there a way to cycle between focus while shooting?
I know this is a long time out since the release of this video, just a whiny complaint so that when you make others like this you can adjust if you want. So when discussing focusing, you go into the menu and say go here, adjust this, but you don't explain what adjusting this does, there is no reason added. I find it helpful to remember better if I know why I am doing something, rather than just straight rote memory.
Just found you Ben. I too use the 7D Mark 2 with the 100-400mm lens. However I also use a 1.4x converter. Any tips for using this combination would be great. As I’m also hearing impaired I can’t hear the beeps etc so do you think it would be worth turning them off anyway?
Welcome to the channel Pauline. I havn't got the 1.4x converter myself so I hope you enjoy using that! I'd recommend turning the beep off so that it doesn't disrupt the wildlife. All the best, Ben.
What are your favourite custom settings?
Very clear and informative ... thank you

Hi Nigel! Thank you so much :) I really hope you enjoy your new camera. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for watching :)
Great tips, thanks Ben!
@5:46 I think that's a brilliant idea. Use the back button to de-AF rather than AF.

Thanks for sharing the camera technique very or very detailed
My pleasure, glad it was helpful :) Thank you for watching. All the best, Ben
Silent shooting for the win.

Your advice is very good, but the quality of your video is awful, it hurts your eyes to watch this shaking
Thank you for your honest comment haha I have since improved my camera and I do apologise for the shaky video.
