Skyrim: 5 Things They Never Told You About The Dwarves

  • Skyrim is a land home to all sorts of men and elves. From the hardy Nords to arrogant Altmer, the world of The Elder Scrolls 5 is a cosmopolitan one. However, quite possibly the most fascinating civilization to have ever existed in Skyrim, are the now long gone Dwemer. A mysterious, yet highly advanced society, the Dwemer, or "Deep Elves" were known to build incredibly sophisticated machines thousands of years ahead of their time and notably, preferred to live underground, constructing incredible subterranean metropolis' whose ruins we can still see today.
    However, in one of the most inexplicable events in Elder Scrolls history, sometime towards the end of the first era, thousands of years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, the Dwemer all just vanished, without a trace. Now, all that remains are their underground ruins and still-humming machinery.
    Mysterious, advanced and long-gone, there's a lot worth learning about these odd elves. So, today we'll be doing just that as we explore five incredibly fascinating yet little-known facts about them. I hope you enjoy five things you (probably) never knew about the Dwarves in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

    I'd prefer a game where we wake up in a prison cell or cage of sorts. You look around and _immediately_ recognize the architecture.. Dwemer
    "Ahh awake friend?" A pointy-eared man with a glowing red eye turns to you from the cell next to yours. "Didnt know if you'd ever come around after how much they roughed you up". The cell begins to rattle and then ascend, far above the red-eyed man's. "Oh and just in time too, judgment awaits". The wet, dripping stone room the cell was in before completely transforms to reveal an enormous golden gilded city, bustling with citizens. Giant Gears and cogs shift and crank on each building, while steam pours out of every exposed pipe. Unlike ruins we've seen before, this city and it's technology appears clean and kept. Then suddenly, black. As quickly as you were exposed to the wonderous world around you it disappears and you're brought back inside. This time at the top of a _very_ regal tower located in the center of the city. The cage's gate slides open and before you sits a Dwemer man on a pearl-white throne. He strokes his long, golden ring crested beard as he looks you up and down. "So traveler, tell me...
    _how exactly did you find us_

    The dwemer time travel theory could hold water actually... since that is what happened to Alduin originally. He was sent forward in time by the ancient Nords using an elder scroll. In the future, when Skyrim takes place, We as the dragonborn are supposed to use an elder scroll at the Throat of the World at a spot called the "time wound". So time travel is a possibility for the Dwemer since the Dragonborn does it in game. Not only that, but the Dragonborn actually obtains the elderscroll by accessing a Dwemer machine.

    Yes, we know what happened to the Dwemer. It was addressed in Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, where we discovered that the king of the dwarves was trying to get God powers for his people from the Heart of Lorkhan, which used to be under Red Mountain. He tried to tap into the Heart using the hammer Sunder and the blade Keening (which is in Skyrim), but he did it wrong and all the dwarves (or almost all; there were apparently a couple of exceptions who were wandering far enough away to avoid it, including one that we discover suffering from Corprus in Morrowind) burned to ash in an instant.

    According to the Last Living Dwarf, cozy in his corner of the Corprusarium, "Lord Kagrenac, the foremost arcane philosopher and magecrafter of my era, devised tools to shape mythopoeic forces, intending to transcend the limits of Dwemer mortality. However, in reviewing his formulae, some logicians argued that side effects were unpredictable, and errors might be catastrophic. I think Kagrenac might have succeeded in granting our race eternal life, with unforeseen consequences -- such as wholesale displacement to an Outer Realm. Or he may have erred, and utterly destroyed our race."
    Or maybe it's both at once until someone opens the lid of the universe to check on them.

    I have a theory about the telepathy. I believe that "apparition" we see during the quest "Under Saarthal" was likely how the telepathy worked. Time stops somewhere between the seconds, the speaker astral projects a phantom of themselves to speak to the intended individual, disappears, time restarts and no one is any the wiser that you have just had a full conversation with someone they never even knew was there in the first place. This is supported by the fact that it was a Psijic Monk that performed this.

      I'd have to disagree in doors of oblivion it says something like the way you control your summons is through that ability and the cost of stopping time even for just communication would be way more than for a normal summons

    • @xaytana
      @xaytana 4 года назад +10

      Except in Unfathomable Depths, which is a Dwemer-related quest, we see apparitions from a different time, essentially repeating their steps. Time doesn't stop, there's no astral projection, no telepathy, etc. What we see is that the Dwemer are literally breaking dimensional constraints, in this case time, arguably space as well to make the apparitions physical, to lead you to the pedestal to return the lexicon, of which you're then granted knowledge in some way. This aligns with the theories that the disappearance of the Dwemer is related to them jumping to another plane of existence and/or jumping to a different time. Essentially they became interdimensional beings that can manipulate at least time.
      What you're talking about, the Psijic, operates on an entirely different mechanic. Obviously they can manipulate things as well, but in a different way to how the Dwemer are doing it.

    • @MrDUneven
      @MrDUneven 4 года назад +11

      Maybe reason why dwemer didn't leave much of written language to us to study was because they prefered to communicate using that method and saved their memories and thoughts on lexicons and learned using those. Instead of scribing magical symbols on paper to record their thoughts and someone else who knows the magic could see those thoughts they had conversations or saw visions with these ghost like projetions, be it either with living who were actively communicating or with ideas in lexicons. The "ghosts" in Unfathomable Deapths were probably memories shown by the lexicon that Dragonborn was carrying. Dwemer were elves afther all, they were probably stonger in magic than men, so having magical solution shaping their society wouldn't be out of possibilites.

    • @jonc5467
      @jonc5467 4 года назад +2

      Came here to say something similar. There could also have been 'levels' or ranks of skill where low levels of skill just imply a running conversation between minds, while a high ability in the skill could impart the apparitions or even the time stop like effect. Either way, we experience this multiple times in the Mage's Guild quest lines.

    The purpose of Kagrenzel, or what that place is all about, seems pretty obvious to me: The Dwemer were building a new city there. They choose a location, obviously from above the ground, then build a base around that location, and then started digging. Possibly using tonal manipulation (thats what that orb might be anyways). That hole would later become a Dwemer lift, once they had reached the depth they wanted. They used the whales to get up and down the hole, before the lift could be built. But alas, while they were worinking and the wales where in there, they vanished. Leaving the future city unfinished and the whales trapped, with no way to escape.

    My favorite theory about the disappearance of the dwarves is that right before the end, Chief Tonal Architect Kegrenac struck the Heart of Lorkhan with Sunder and Keening to complete his great work. When he did so he learned the true nature of their world, that nothing is real and that they dont actually exist. Due to the dwemers telepathic connection with each other, Kagrenac transmitted this truth to every dwarf on Mundus and they all zero-summed because their logical thinking minds couldnt grasp the idea that they werent real.

    • @metetural9140
      @metetural9140 4 года назад +11

      @@krimzrill4301 well one theory what probably is the truth is that Kagrenac (famous Dwemer builder) was making a numidium (a giant Dwemer automatron what the Dwemer basically worshiped) called Akulakhan but this Numidium was different from the other. Instead of using a bunch of soul gems to power it, they used the heart of Lorkhan. Lorkhan was a god who used himself to create Nirn. The theory says that when the Chimer (the Dunmer before they were cursed) found out they were outraged and attacked Red Mountain and the Dwemer. Then, right before the Chimer got to Kagrenac he put the heart in place of the Akulakhan and... poof. In an instance all fighting stopped, the Chimer were confused... the Dwemer had just disappeared in front of their eyes. Indoril Neravar (who led the fight, and was the leader or Resdayn, aka proto-morrowind) declared it a victory.
      Some more about the Heart and the Chimer. Some believe Nerevar succumbed to his wounds after defeat King Dumac of the Dwemer. Though there are two other theories. One being that after "defeating" the Dwemer, Neravar and his most trusted commander Voryn Dagoth found the heart and Kagrenac's tools: Keening, Sunder and Wraithguard. After this Neravar told Voryn to stay and protect the tools and heart whilst he would go talk to his Advisors. After he talked to his Advisors which agreed to leave the tools alone and make a vow to Azura, he (and this is the "official" account from the Tribunal temple) returned to Red Mountain to retrieve the tools from Voryn, but Voryn Dagoth had been driven mad by the power of the heart of Lorkhan in Neravar's absence and refused to give him the tools, Nerevar fought Dagoth but was cut down, but was able to survive until his Advisors found him, he made them swear to never use the tools. Unfortunately, Almalexia, Vivec and Sotha Sil ended up using the tools to turn themselves into gods and formed the Tribunal temple. Azura was enraged by their deception of her and Nerevar and cursed the Chimer to "turn their eyes to fire and their skin to ash" turning them into the Dunmer. This ironically didn't affect the three gods excluding Vivec who's body is half gold half grey.
      The other theory is the one from the Ashlanders, AKA the tribal people of Morrowind. This one says that instead of his wounds or Dagoth killing Neravar, it was his Advisors: Almalexia, Vivec and Sotha Sil. In this account, Nerevar made them swear to never use the tools, and they obeyed, but secretly conspired to murder Nerevar so that they might gain power. When attempting to summon Azura, Nerevar was foiled; Almalexia used poisoned candles and Sotha Sil used poisoned robes and Vivec used poisoned invocations. Nerevar was killed. Azura did the same thing of cursing the Chimer. But when the three turned up to Red Mountain, Dagoth questioned them asking where Neravar was and that he wouldn't give them the tools until Neravar showed up. Due to this they attacked Dagoth and bested him, after this they took the tools and made themselves gods and made themselves the controllers of Morrowind. But what they did not know was that Dagoth wasn't dead, with his last amounts of strength he crawled to the heart and became a god, though with that amount of power he went mad and swore to destroy the tribunal.

    If we refer to "The Doors of Oblivion" and the fact the Psijic Order misteriously disappears and reappears periodically in the First and Second Era, we could argue that at some point, the Psijic Order might have been rebuilt by the Dwemer from somewhere else in space and/or time.
    This doesn't have a lot to stand on, except for the fact that both these folks are the only known capable of telepathy (except for the Daedra, that is).
    We can also notice the way Quaranir appears to the Dragonborn in TESV : Skyrim. It does not look like conjuration magic, maybe some other form of teleportation, relying on technology rather than magic ?
    Let me end with this : if the statement that the Dwemer actually were transported all the way to the Ninth era where technology has gone all crazy is true, then that would explain why they know that the Eye of Magnus was at the heart of something major to come.
    Maybe we'll find out someday that the Psijic Order and the Dwemer are the same, from different points in space and/or time.
    This needs confirmation from someone with a lot more knowledge on the matter than I do though.

    Nate, you forgot another theory on what happened to the dwemer. The theory of Zero Sum. The theory hinges on the concept of the godhead, the idea(comes from one of the developers) that the entire elder scrolls universe is a dream being dreamed by some unknown figure. Basically Zero Sum is one of two things that can happen to a person, or in the dwarves case race, when they realize that. They either 1: achieve chim(I think that’s how you spell it) where the person’s ego is so massive they become separate from the dream like Vivec or Talos did, or 2: they Zero Sum:they realize they’re part of a dream and that there is no point to their existence, so they’re deleted from existence.

      I jumped into ESO from early access and jumped out before the first expansion was even announced. It's not a very good game on its own, and a far cry from being a passable TES game. It suffers all the normal pitfalls of bad F2P MMO gimmicks, and treats TES lore like a bad joke with puerile characters and cringy dialogue.
      When they developed it, the writers said they weren't going to adhere to TES lore truly, and then they just threw in all the random obscure content like it was funny, such as the grey skinned humans of Black Marsh, the Kothringi.
      That's what happens when you give TES to a totally different production team who never worked on any of the actual titles before, it ends up being bad fanfic.

    Way back before when Skyrim was newly introduced to me, I have suspected that Peryite has something to do with their disappearance since his relic, the Spell Breaker, really looks like they're Dwemer made. Although, Peryite is considered the weakest Daedric Prince, I imagined he have something to do why the Dwemers stayed underground (probably he gave them disease or biological deficiencies that would make them sensitive to the upper surface or something) and given that we'd get to see huge bones, I derived that the owner of these bones, were brought underground and perished after sometime. Even the last surviving Dwemer is already suffering from an ailment. Also, during the quest "The Only Cure" we can see that Peryite decides to eliminate those who would disaffiliate themselves from him like it's not new to him and given that the Dwemers do not believe or worship any deity so, I would assume that, at some point, Peryite decides that they have to go and in retroaction the Dwemers worked even harder in order for their race to survive and yet, they all probably perished from a severe plague or something similar.
