    Hey Sam, another great update. Absolutely with you on finding a good engineer - I tried to work with one for my Mark II motorcycle project, but the only one I could find here was flat out on other customers' work. You're already ahead of me in that you have an exact plan for what the frame should look like and how it should mount - that's going to be really valuable to an engineer. Best of luck!

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks Paul! I hope so. We'll see what they think of it and what shop will be interested in building it. I'm excited to see how it looks in the end. I like the quote, "stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach."

    Kodos for you for keeping a level head on the subject.
    Being an engineer I get frustrated when people defend blue collar workers such as welders and electricians when they have to certify something but everybody seems to hate engineers involvement. I am sure the idea is simply they want somebody to structually review it. Same goes true in building a house, right. I hope you find somebody that will allow you to be involved to help keep your cost down.
    I admit as a Computer/Electrical Engineer even though 2 of my 4 yrs of college is the same as a mechanical engineer that when I design things structurally for my electric conversions I know my limits and ask for help. I have a buddy that is a mechanical engineer that reviews my designs and he always catches mistakes that I would have never thought of and I am always glad I asked for their input.
    Thanks for keeping us poosted. 🍻

    "The car will be electric in 2024" sounds a bit like famous last words ;)
    But on the other hand I'm astounded at how swiftly things have moved (even though it probably feels like forever to you), so I'd risk to bet on your new year's resolution to actually be feasible! Best of luck!

    Happy New Year Sam (and Jen). I know the rules in NZ are very different to other countries but I am sure you will get your road legal WOF electric car in 2024. I just hope the existing rules don't make you figuratively bankrupt into the bargain. Man you have the resolve and determination so onwards and upwards! Take care!

    Good to see you back into this project, Sam. The track owners, like Manfeild, have banned EV's, but not Motorsport NZ. You can still do sprints and hill climbs where the organiser has made provision for EVs. And there are at least four (maybe five) of these events each year much closer to home than any "track".

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  10 месяцев назад +1

      True that! Great point. I'd love to enter one at some point just to see what the car can do. I still have the roll cage but I'd need to get that certified too. Lots of exciting stuff to come! I'll finally get to use the footage of your race car.. a whole year later 😂

    • @ratmanbrian
      @ratmanbrian 10 месяцев назад

      @@NewZeroland You don't actually need a roll cage for most local events.. you could put that on hold. Also, if your cage is a bolt-in one from Japan, then it might not be possible to certify it in NZ ( wrong steel, wrong diameter, wrong mounting points, no diagonal) and it is easier to have a new compliant one made here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Happy New Year to you both. I’m absolutely convinced the NZ standards are similar to Aus when it comes to modifying vehicles so that you can do the modifications & get the vehicle re-certified by vehicle engineers & obtain a certificate of compliance. I’m absolutely sure of this. Please check into this. How many people swap blown engines in cars & bikes & don’t get them re-certified? Just follow engineering principles with advice from people in your sphere & go from there! Speak to NZ roads authority. They will provide you with companies that validate & certify modifications & engineering structure standards.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  10 месяцев назад +3

      Yep, definitely. I'll be talking to a certifier soon and finding out how much of this is possible 😂 I probably should have checked with one beforehand but it was impossible to know how things would fit without taking it all apart, so I feel ok with it. No going back now!

    • @moestrei
      @moestrei 9 месяцев назад

      Agree with the above. I (in NSW/AUS) converted a motorcycle where the original engine was a structural member of the frame. Designed and build a structural battery box myself on CAD. The certifying engineer took stress vectors (?) data out of the CAD to analyse (eyeballed?) structural integrity.

    Hey there, just a little note. I have just done Gavin's motor so the information is still fresh. You don't need a certified welder, you just need good welds and pics of the work with the material sizes to show the certifier.
    Have you read the "New Zealand Car Construction Manual" yet? It has all the legal information about modifying NZ cars to get certified for on road use and it is free.
    If you wanted to get the car up to the Waikato I could do the engineering work for you, I’m keen to see all of these projects moving ahead. Let me know if you would like me to help.

There need to be some standards for what they allow on the road. I can't imagine there aren't other people in NZ electrofying vehicles in the same way that haven't needed similar services.
