When the HE engine first arrived on the scene, it had the same fuel rails/system as the pre-HE engine. Because Jaguar had some engine fires, they soon brought out a recall with updated rail and additional components. But the reason for the fires was the vacuum retard and fuel vapor entering the distributor via the vacuum hose/manifold. The fix was an updated blue vented distributor cap with two tubes. One had a small air filter on the end and the other vented to a vacuum source. This of-coarse stopped a build up of flammable gases in the distributor, the cause of the engine fires on the V12 HE Engine. How do I know this?. I was working for Jaguar dealership at the time and on one occasion, while working on a HE, prior the having this mod and revving up the engine, the distributor exploded into several bits. As technicians, we get to see many exciting things like this. I hope this is helpful.

So that's what that odd plastic transparent filter hanging around my engine bay on the end of a hose that goes nowhere is for! Good info - thanks.

Some thing to add. Install the small injector seals into the inlet manifold prior to fitting the injectors. lube can also help fitment. Also, and important I feel , Is to have all the injectors checked and flow tested for consistency. If you have some injectors with unequal flow, it can upset the tune of the engine.Thx

Awesome video. My only comment would be not to use engine oil for lubricating new hoses, but rather 96º alcohol. It will slip incrediblu well, but as it evaporates, it will be impossible to remove. Great job all in all!

I have been meaning to comment on this and report back my experience with the product since I had the service done to a '91 XJS I purchased earlier this year. The only reason I can offer this report is due to the quality videos on this site and so, Jared (I think that's your name?) - THANK YOU for doing them.
I'm not mechanically inclined and even if I were, I don't have the garage space or tools, although I would like to learn and eventually begin doing some things. But I knew that when it came to this job, I would definitely want a professional doing it.
I live in Carlisle, PA, and prior to the purchase of the car, I hunted for a good mechanic to have it worked on, even sharing this video because I had determined it would be part of the very first service I do before making the car a regular (hopefully daily) driver car - yes, all year-driver. While I did not find a garage/mechanic with specific experience on Jaguar V-12's, one local garage has a mechanic who has worked on other V-12's in his career and after lots of discussion, I determined that I would use them - and so far, so good. And, since I'm in Carlisle (as some may know, a bit of a "car community" due to our national car shows, including the well-known, annual Corvette show), its actually quite easy to find good, experienced mechanics.
The initial work I had done included the basics, such as flushing/replacing all fluids, but also a front-end rack/pinion rebuild (which they actually sent to a union shop in Philadelphia), and replacement of fuel hoses using the Mr. Injector kit. I have two comments to report on this, which I hope are helpful:
    1. Mr. Injector Customer Service: I found it to be superb. They were quick to respond to all my emailed questions and quickly mailed the product via TNT Express. After a week, the package did not arrive. I inquired and Mr. Injector reached out, only to discover that the package had somehow been lost within the UK. Not to worry, they sent a second kit to me, overnight (arriving in well under 24 hours) using Federal Express. This was no cost to me. I can't say enough about their swift, unwavering demand on themselves for excellent customer service and I hope this post will encourage others to use them so that they stick around. I wish I could leave a comment on their website but it doesn't have a section for this.
    2. Report from my garage on Mr. Injector kit: The mechanic and team that reviewed the kit and installed the hoses and components, inclusive of a review of the Mr. Injector instructions and illustrations, said it was very impressive and of high quality. No reported issues for the install, as difficult as it is. Now, I just hope that Mr. Injector is still around when I decide to do the job again as this is a critical one for safety.
As for the car, it has treated me well, even in stop and go traffic (no overheating). Its more comfortable and smooth on the road than the '17 Ford Fusion lease I will be returning to Ford in October. I just crossed over 39K miles on the engine and I plan to take it back in for a second oil change and a full review of the engine in a month or two. The power steering has a bit more of a "gear" whine, I think, than when I first got it, so I hope that isn't an issue. I am seeking a place that can apply an undercoat to help protect from winter road treatments, etc.; and I have to replace the headliner and found a great shop in neighboring Lancaster County that priced the job at $300.
For those of you who have read my comments thus far, I'm curious what you think: my car is the same color as Jared's convertible '91 XJS - just a coupe, with matching, red pin stripes on the leather upholstery. I know this would not be a "stock" decision, but it crossed my mind to do the headliner in matching red and personalize it a bit. I plan to keep the car as long as I can.... so, I thought, why not? Should I, or should I keep it the same beige color?
Thanks again for these great videos.

Nice instructional video! I have a similar Bosch system on my Bertone X1/9 although thankfully, only four injectors instead of 12. One of the biggest mistakes I see is people using a sharp utility knife to split the hose longitudinally inevitably slicing a groove into the metal barbs beneath. Then after reinstalling and pressurizing every connection leaks!

I certainly agree with the importance of doing this. My 89 XJS suffered a engine fire 5 years ago. It had original 89 fuel lines with the date stamped on. It had sat for years prior to the fire. I would however caution with your technique of cutting the hoses off the way you describe. Great potential for messing up the barbs on the injector. Happy to say after 6 months of constant gardening it is on the road again. Increadible GT vehicles! Thanks for the video man.

Thanks a lot. Really useful . I had a Jaguar XJS V12 convertible 1989 back in 2016. It caught fire due to old (never replaced) fuel hoses which leaked just above the distributor. Fire was put out quite quickly but no dealer or garage would repair it with guarantee and it was taken over by my insurance company. Now I bought myself another XJS V12 convertible (lovely car !!) but from 1990. I also bought the repair kit you recommended and I will follow your instructions and change all fuel hoses before summer.

This a very informative and DIY video and a must for fuel injection Jaguar owners 6 or 12. My fuel rail was replaced on my V12. The mechanic did not use the kit shown here. He replaced the short injector hoses with correct ones that were simply pushed on then used two fuel injector clamps per injector. My V12 runs silky smooth so that method seems to work. Its nice to know that a rebuild kit is available since rebuilt injectors with hose are sold by Rockauto in USA for $30 each plus $10 for core. There are dangers of fuel injection on vintage Jags unless these critical items are replaced or overhauled as this video shows. Time consuming at least when your wife smells gas on you she knows where you been.

The kits really make this a job that most can tackle at home if you don't have a trusty mechanic.

Injectors are my next bigger project on the XJS, 86 then the cooling hoses.
I just replaced the Aux Radiator fan motor and blade (Factory CFM is about 650cfm )- all replacements were $350 + USED! and i did a lot of research to find replacements including Bosch which the old was but had been replaced im sure- after painstaking cross checking MANY $24 type kits availible online i found that Mishimoto has an 11inch thinest of 3 they offer at $89 - had 950 CFM as well which was such a improvement for cooling-old 650cfm ( I read where a longtime jag owner said to wash all radiators really well to remove any blockages from sandwiched fins as well) so, I ground OFF the outer composit brackets and corners in my bench grinder/ wheel, and it fit snugly but went right in to the venturi of the sheet metal frame! i removed all brackets of the old one and saved them in case i ever sell the car and some one wants original. My goal is Original except where $$$ is so high i cant find or obtain the replacements with out a 2nd Mortgage. The look is good, performance improved and wiring is very straight forward. Next Electrical will be to replace engine area fuse block and holders with modern blade type. Appreciate your clear views and instruction on the projects you do! can't wait to be driving this car thanks to your motivation! Plus several folks are asking for a ride in it --one is the former owner, she's the grandmother of the Friend who told me about their selling it in the first place. Cheers :)

It looked a daunting task but thanks to your excellent video it wasn't. My filters were very hard to get in straight , lots of rotating & eyeballing needed to get them true,& just would not go right in until, with some trepidation, I resorted to the bench vice. Easy! No damage to the filter end. Thanks also for the gearbox filter change video, new fluid has improved the 'lazy' gearbox. The car has only done 38k miles in 37 years & I suspect only one previous change in that time (judged by chewed bolt heads!)

In the United States, we add Ethanol to our gasoline. We must consider that the corrosive effect of this additive does damage to older hoses not engineered for Ethanol. Along with replacing your old hoses, use non-ethanol fuel if you can find it. Your classic will run better and have less long-term damage.

So I have a question. I have put 2k miles since start up and I have everything apart now to seal up all the leaks and poorly running systems. Noticed gas pools in 5 of 12 sparkplug wells. ( yes I am aware how fortunate I am) I look and some of my fuel injectors are not entirely flush and evidently the gap enough for fuel to most likely dribble out when off. Everything looked right. And fastened down correctly at the time. Any ideas? All I can think is to lift it all up and try to reset again. If that does not do the trick I guess I will just have to buy the kit, even if I was off slightly in my lengths of fuel hose there would have been enough stretch that the locking plates would have forced the injectors flush? Very glad to be as OCD as I am I now know what correct should look like. I would have been gutted if it burned down to the ground after so much work and promise. My guess it won't be on the road again until summer. It will increasingly much better though. Just in the weeds right now. It is starting to look like I am wanting to take the engine out! Thanks to you and the information age this car will see me out the door someday. 89 xjs 35k miles

My garage in view of a MOT is telling me that I should replace the injectors and the full fuel rail (perhaps since they think changing altogether it can be easier), but not on the engine you showed, but in a 1993 5.3 one, ie the one with the injectors directly attached to the rail with a lot less hoses. This, in their view, since they found a bit of fuel “humidity” right besides the visible part of the injectors (the one that you see when they are still there). The pieces are all original from 1993. Does it make sense to you ? Thank you very much for your support.

I have a 1990 Jaguar XJS V12. The fuel lines EAC 9987, 9986 and 7983 the rubber between the metal lines is brittle and needs to be replaced. I checked to buy new and are close to $400 USD. Is there a way to replace the rubber or the lines without buying these new lines?

I think instead of doing all of that on my xjs im just going to go the dual carb route

Great video. I'm planning on doing this very soon with my v12. One question I have though. Has anyone ever thought to replace the rubber hose with steel or something more heat resistant? If this is a common problem maybe a steel fuel line could be a permanent solution?

It's the connection between the steel fuel rail and the injectors that are rubber. On newer cars this is just an o-ring and less prone to leaking

@@LivingWithAClassic Exactly - I bought an 1993 5.3 XJS one month ago, but I cannot literally find the "hoses": the trail is kind of "directly" connected to the injectors ... is this what you are referring to ? In other words, I do not run a high risk of fire...? Thank you and keep working with your channel, really helpful.

Thank you. Will it also fit the XJR-S 6.0 1990 Pre facelift?

It is a different kit since the hoses are a bit different. The website has a kit for pre-HE too

Make sure there using modern rubber materials as e10 fuel rots traditional rubber

This doesn’t apply to the 94 xj12 or does it

The fuel connections are a little different there but it's still very important to check the fuel lines

Why dont you call them spanner as a wrench is a different tool
A spanner can be double end single end, open and closed.
A wrench is a single end with an adjustable.

I have a new project XJS 1985. Was told that ir ran when it was parked 5 years ago. I just connected it to a jump pack, and it cranks over, but nowhere close to starting. It probably has 5 year old fule or no fule at all, so I plan to fill it with some fuel. Before I do, I am not sure about one line in engine that looks like a fule line and fule filter, but have no idea where it goes to. ANy suggestions? Maybe it is not a fuel line, but sure looks like a fule filter. I just found that I cannot post a picture. SO maybe this link will work. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fN4FBNDoiv_GcDIYt9mD6T-8j2Aooe7H?usp=sharing

That is a vacuum line for the the distributor. It’s to ventilate the distributor cap
