Raising Boys and the Making of a Man

  • In this day and age, I believe a young boy could grow up and go their entire life without getting a good idea of what it really means to be a man. Some were blessed enough to have good fathers who understood what it meant to be a man and passed on this knowledge to their sons. Increasingly more so, this is a rarity, as 1/3 of all kids now grow up in a home without their biological fathers. The statistics regarding crime rates associated with those growing up in fatherless homes is startling. I wonder how much crime would simply disappear if every home had a good father figure in it raising children well. How many gangs would simply dry up and disappear? I think cops would find themselves refreshingly bored. I know this is all wishful thinking, but my point is this: fathers need to step up. Think of the impact if you and I came alive as fathers? Your children will grow up and affect the lives of countless others and their children will go on and do the same. This ripple affect - this opportunity of compounding influence - has got to overwhelmingly dwarf whatever the majority of us may hope to accomplish at our jobs. Love your kids men. Teach them to be strong, dedicated, focused, gentle, fierce, loyal - teach them to be men.

John, my dad died when I was 4. I grew up in a fatherless home with a drug addicted mom. My journey into true “manhood” has taken me a lot longer than it would have otherwise. One thing that has always been very clear to me is how important dads are. I could always physically see the difference they made in other families and some of my best memories are of men taking a few minutes or a few days out of their lives to offer me a hand in understanding my role in the world. As a dad now myself, I’m able to take all of my negative experience in life and use it as motivation to see that my son gets the things he deserves as a growing boy. It’s the most rewarding and emotionally demanding job I’ve ever had.
I guess what I’m saying is that you hit the nail on the head. I carry the scars of growing up without a dad with me everywhere I go. As a man, though, I’m able to decide how those scars affect me. I use them as a reminder of the power I wield in my son’s life and as a motivator to be the best dad I can possibly be.
Just wanted to pass along a thank you.

Thanks for your comment. My 5 yr old nephew is in the same situation. I lost my brother (his father) in a car accident three months ago and worry about his son. I see him almost everyday when I go to walk their dog for my sister-in-law and play with him for an hour. My brother and I didn't have good father figures so to see my brother create a good life for himself and begin his journey into fatherhood felt really good. I relate to what you mentioned about certain men just taking a few moments to bond and teach. I have a couple deep memories of men I've met only a handful of times. I hope to help guide my nephew in a way my brother would both approve and be proud of.

Your opening statement is what I’ve taught my children all their lives. If a man (not politically correct) doesn’t try to instill courage and morality into his children’s lives, they may not ever grow to be courageous and moral. Love your channel!

Train hard, train smart at my international school for warriors: Rising Dragon School. In order to do this you must plan ahead and get a job to save money. Get a passport. Be positive and start working out
Try to do 20 pushups every day

While I appreciate this video it turned out the opposite for me. I haven't seen my father since I was a young child, but instead of becoming some soft ill-disciplined, or overly aggressive boy, I took the initiative and became my own father figure. I graduated early from Highschool with almost all A's, got a job at my local military base (civilian), got accepted with a close to full ride scholarship to University, and am in the process of joining the Canadian Armed forces as an Infantry Officer. I am not saying this to brag, but just to show all of those people without a dad/father figure to be your own, and to take your own road. (You prob should anyway but it is really important to those without direct motivation to push yourselves :]

im not going to lie... I'm a 25 year old who fucked up most of his life despite having an amazing father who gave me everything I ever could have hoped for, trying my god dam hardest to to enlist as a 11x. I lost that great man almost 4 years ago in December and come October I will be a father to my first born boy. I'm scared shitless of failing as a father and honestly just in life. but i found your channel last night in the early hours of a sleepless night and i have not stopped watching your videos but this one...this one hit to close to home. and you sir. have given me hope. regardless of if my past will ruin my chances for enlistment I will not fail as a father. stay safe sir and god bless.

I'm from a broken home, good step dad that tried but i had to learn my own way, often at my own Peril and even jail time. I'm 47 with 2 6 year old twins, boy and girl and an 8 year old son. Fatherhood is the most difficult, scary, demoralizing, happy, joyous and blessed part of a mans life. I work hard, love my wife, love my kids and i want my boys to be honorable, trusted rocks. Guns are a big part of that through practice, hunting and eating what we kill. I want to raise independent children that can take care of each other. Not an easy task and i fail at it often. I am a man without any friends. I run a mid sized company and i have work friends but for the past 15 years or so i have found myself alone without other men to do life together. Other men's input is very important to me and i thank you John for sharing. My kids pick up on my lack of friends as well. I don't want them to turn out like me. Big question: how in the hell do i build a brotherhood of friends? All opinions are welcome! Having friends would make my life better.

I have a strong relationship with my brother and friends in my church. Find a church that teaches the Word of God. The Bible is God's word. And pick one up for yourself. Read it in its plain words don't worry about some sort of mystery or magic or something, God will reveal Himself and truth through it. God said: in this world you will have trouble, but fear not I have overcome the world.

So true John, my father was constantly away be it during the invasion of iraq in 2003 through to other deployments before and after including northern ireland then after it all i was with him through his struggle with PTSD which led to us being in a semi homeless state and me not seeing him for a few years. But before all that he would take me running and hiking up mountains lecturing me on military history and spurring me on and up it by making it seem like we were in and amongst the jungles of vietnam under IDF fire. He really made me the man i am today for better or worse and we even squeezed in a military parade together when i was 17 just before his retirement(British Army join at 16), now it's come full circle and after my deployment to afghanistan he was by my side with any PTSD i may have had.

As a kid without a real father this resonates deeply with me. My biological father is in and out of jail and owes thousands in child support. I talk to him every now and again and it feels like I’m talking with a stranger. My family and I have been homeless for almost a year now. Going from a shelter to family to family again has been really exhausting. But I’m just glad there’s men like you on YT that I can look to for as “father figures”

The Bible says that as men, we are spiritual leaders of our homes. That means you ARE leading your family somewhere. You get to choose where you are leading them; Towards something better, or to the same crappy experiences/influences you had to deal with.

My father was never there for me in an emotional way, and we don't speak now at all, never said he loved me or was proud of me for anything but that disconnect made me have to figure out what being a man was from other father figures such as my uncles and grandfather and also dads of my close friends. So it left me to kind of have to figure out what being a man was all about. Learning respect and manners came from my own morals and my mom's influence. I respect you brother, for putting out this video. Many guys young or old need to see and understand this especially in the millennial generation (which I am part of). Obviously coming upon this late, but this is absolutely true and great stuff, John! And not only for sons! My papa was a fighter pilot, a bronze star award recipient and someone that I adored. And I can honestly say that he had as much to do with who I am as a female as my mum did. I balance strength and nurturing with an ease that puzzles folks (so they say) and I'm a fierce mama hen. He's been gone for 24 years now (God rest his soul), and his approval STILL matters to me, so when you're talking about the lasting impact of a wonderful papa, you're speaking my language. Also, as an LMFT working in an urban area for 32 years, I've yet to meet a gang member who had a father in his life. Makes sense: gangs are about connection, loyalty and protection. What are families supposed to be about? Those young men create in their worlds what they didn't get at home --- to the huge detriment and cost to society at large. There is NO substitution for good parents; they are an absolute blessing. And I, like you, pass along what they both taught me in every single therapy session for those 32 years .. parents being parents, kids being kids, respect, honor, honesty, responsibility, taking pride in a job well done, not taking more than you need, protecting the weak and standing up to bullies. I enjoy honoring them, and it's nice to see that you, too, honor what you've been taught. I'm sure that your dad is proud of you. Ranger on ...

There is nothing finer than another strong man speaking from the heart. Our greatest fear and the question we ask ourselves at 3am should always be "do I try every day to be a good Dad" not succeed but try, every day. God bless you brother

Thank you for having the courage to speak on matters that are difficult. You consistently demonstrate a higher level of insight on many topics , most important how to be a better human. Many of your viewers probably just say "yeah, I know..." But it's really good to just hear good advice from time to time. Keep up the outstanding work! Fire mission, over....Fire mission, out!
