    “Don’t make goals, create habits.” This is the best advice I’ve ever been given. I’m not self-disciplined. I love Bible study but life’s chores get in the way. What I’ve experienced is that, whenever I do that studying for an hour or so, I’m much more productive throughout the day because my spirit has been lifted. I’m going to make daily study not a goal, which is for the future, but rather a habit, which fulfills the now. Thank you for this advice/encouragement. I tend to let the trivial fill my time. Ironically, I get more tediousness accomplished when I feed my spirit first.

    • @stevenmark8156
      @stevenmark8156 3 года назад +3

      True that! I decided about 35 years ago to make spending an hour in God’s Word, first thing in the morning, the priority of my life. I pray, ask God to take over my life for the day, ask for the Holy Spirit to teach me, drink two glasses of water and begin to study. Been doing it ever since. You would probably be hard pressed to find a Bible with as many notes written in it as mine. Thousands of hours of notes. Often I read stuff in those notes that I didn’t even know that I knew. But it comes back to me. Anyway, if you do that, you will not regret it! As you read, thoughts will come to your mind, for example short comings, stop right there and ask God to help you overcome it, or start practicing it, or whatever the case. God bless your effort to create this new habit if you haven’t already!

      Can relate. To turn that thought into a positive: we choose how to spend our time. In other words. The next time you think “there’s not time for this”, change that to “I choose not to make time for this.” It helps you figure out what is actually important for you. This year I’ve lost 84 pounds since May. For me, I just woke up one day and decided enough is enough I need to get healthy. I now go to the gym every other day to lift weights and I only eat healthy foods.
    The biggest drive for me was craving a healthier, leaner body. By being more active and eating healthier it will also affect your overall perspective on life.
    I’m trying to get my parents on board, especially my dad, but you can’t beat a dead horse. You really need that internal drive to make it; at least for me I did. I did set a long term goal, but once you see progress after a little bit, you realize it’s not as hard as you thought and eventually it will become a habit.

      Benjamin Eadie, so far, so good. At least I still get to sleep in the bed. 😉😉 But really, it’s going great. We have 5 kids (25 yrs boy/girl twins, 24 yrs girl/girl twins and a 17 yr old boy that we adopted when he was born).Only the 17 yr old lives at home. But with the virus going around out of the oldest set of twins, the girl and out of the youngest twins is working at hospitals. They are going to school for RN. The boy of the oldest twins and the other girl of the younger twins works outside the house. My youngest boy helps me with my woodworking business. I’ve been taking it easy with the business and doing stuff as a family. Everyone has a day that they can pick what they want to do. As in yesterday, for example, we all went fishing. The day before that the wife and I went to a park and hand fed wild squirrels and looked at the flowers. The flowers were her idea but the squirrels were mine. My grandpa and I used to do that at the lake. I had about 20 of the around me and maybe 10 up in my lap. We had a good time. But we’ve been doing stuff like that as a family when the kids don’t have to work.

    3- Dry fire my pistol and rifle every day. 3 minutes of each.
    4- After work time, walk away from the work. Be with my family, not at work.

    Ol' trooper here from the 82nd. Your best vid ever. Used to teach survival training based on the Mors Kochanski saw, "the more you know, the less you have to carry." And you know as well, the single biggest survival skill one can have is to think calmly and clearly. And Teddy R's old saw of "do what you can with what you got where you are" is foundational to the OODA loop. So glad to see this kind of talk as one tires of EDC and gear vids. Great stuff, "build habits, not goals" and find substitutes for what needs replacing in your life. Which is the embodiment of Mark Twain's old saying, "Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time." - Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar. Now just "why" would I be so locked on to what you've done here? Simply because what Twain also said about habits is very true..."You can't reach old age by another man's road. My habits protect my life but they would assassinate you."- 70th birthday speech, 1905 So it's not the goals (another man's habits) but rather the habits you develop that guarantee your success, or failure. Blessings to you brother, stay strong in the faith.

    Great advice! I would like to add something I've been using: get started with the smallest amount of work possible. If you want to do something but lack the discipline, you can just do the minimum amount of work. For example, if you want to start reading books, tell yourself to read just one sentence. Once you have gotten the book, went to wherever you read books, gotten your glasses, turned on a light and turned to the right page you will not stop at that one sentence. One of the hardest things relating to discipline is to get started and this really helps with that.

    Creating habits and substitute bad for better are two most important tools in our toolbox. And it takes time to master their use
    The time to create new habit depends on familiarity of attempted actions
    If you're creating habit which in some form relates to something you're already doing habitually AND you are able to see/understand connection, then the time frame is shorter (11 days in some instances)
    If you are venturing into absolutely new territory than it can take up to 3 months
    Thats why there is such a thing as 100 days grace period
    To create new habit is to make unknown familiar
    Starting with 'low bar' helps because you're doing small change which does not affect your life in too disturbing way
    Once you are familiar with that small action, you've got a bridgehead from which you can expand your habit
    Creating new habits closely relates to elimination of bad habits
    You simply don't have enough time for both, good and bad ones
    Eliminating bad/old habits is changing familiar into unfamiliar
    Here comes the second advice from video,
    => substitute
    Find something similar but better (even just slightly better) and substitute
    After some time, when the old faded into unfamiliar, substitute the slightly better for something better. Rinse and repeat

    I really like this video. I think a lot of people needed this, and more need to watch it. One of my big challenges to try to squeeze in is exercising/working out. I am very active due to the nature of my job and personal life. I work in a mine and live in the country so I’m always moving, lifting, climbing, working in some physical form. I get up at 4:30, go to work, come home at 6:30 or so. I have basically one day a week to do stuff for myself and my family. It doesn’t leave a lot of room for me to do anything else. I’ve made a point of this year, trying to do some basic workout stuff each evening before getting a shower. Push-ups sit ups that kind of stuff. Haven’t been the best with it to be honest. Some days I come home filthy and covered in mud. I just want to shower and something to eat and then go to sleep. But at the same time I don’t want my family to feel neglected so I try to spend some type of time with them. Maybe watch an episode of their favorite show, play with some Legos, play outside for a bit. I don’t know if this is lacking discipline per say, but I definitely struggle keeping a workout routine. I don’t want to turn into the fat dad bod type but I feel like it may be inevitable

Some times you shovel rocks and mud all day cause there was a big spill. Sometimes you are putting on a harness and climbing up structures to weld or fix something. Keeps you moving most days. According to my phone I average around 10k steps a day and about 120 flights of stairs. I don’t have it on me all the time though. @@TheGunguy461 Thank you for proving that you don't understand what was said in the video. It's not a matter of math. It is about the gospel of Jesus Christ.
      If you would like to discuss it; we can move forward. If you are just a keyboard warrior looking for an argument then consider this conversation over.

      @@charlie10tango39 Even if you believe the Bible, Jesus in now quantifiable way "took over the world." Taking over the world means you have control of everyone. Since at most 25% of people alive today are Christian (which assumes that all self-proclaimed Christians are Christian, which most Christians don't) then how did Jesus take over the world?
      If someone takes something over, then they have total control over how it runs. Is the world in which we live exactly how Jesus wants it? I sincerely hope not.
      We can approach this from whatever angle you want: historically, religiously, philosophically. If it's not a matter of math then how do you quantify it?

    Excellent instruction! I probably ought to listen to this first thing every morning! I've always set BIG lofty goals, only to in the not too distant future find them unmet. Go big or go home, that's me, that's how my family knows me. So, I go big and then go home to the same ole me. Tomorrow I will sit and think about what you shared, and then I will take an inventory of my habits good and bad, develop a plan to get rid of the bad habits. Then having done that I will prioritize the habits which I want to weave into my life, choose 2 or 3 of the highest on my list, and then set attainable milestones by which to measure my progress. It shall be done!!!

    Many peoples dreams and aspirations become their identity. Talking about who they aspire to be. But so many are crippled by the fear-spending a lifetime waiting on the “right” time, looking for the right circumstances, up until the dream fades away into the sunset-forever.

      @Cain Kopczynskie Good on you brother, right on! Just remember to always follow the four fundamental gun safety rules, and now that you have the little one (congratulations by the way!), how ever safe you feel your being when manipulating/storing the firearm, times it by ten just to be sure! I’m not saying you already don’t, heck you’re probably better me! Just looking out for someone in the same community. Happy for you dude! Take care
