The Weakness of an ANGRY Fighter

  • The Weakness of An Angry Fighter is in their inability to think clearly and to maintain charge of their emotional faculties. While rage and anger can be very useful in a fight, it can also ensure your defeat. Against the untrained person, anger can overwhelm and rob the adversary of their will to fight, but against a determined enemy with training, your furious rage can be a recipe for disaster. In a contest between skilled fighters, the one to lose their cool first is oftentimes the loser.
Our desire as good protectors is to be able to use rage while still being able to think and while being able to maintain our overall emotional cool. Be a fire breathing dragon on the inside, but let your demeanor be all business. Develop a switch that only you can throw so that you remain in charge of your emotions and mind. Members of the Military, cops, contractors, and responsible armed civilians need to understand how rage works and what the strengths and weaknesses are to their anger so that they might be able to win in whatever fight they may find themselves in. Police officers especially must be able to have sober judgment at all times so they can understand the legal applications from moment to moment in any given situation and to understand liability factors - and all this must be understood before, during, and after any violent encounter.
How can we ensure we can control our rage and harness its strength without being carried away into becoming thoughtless, dumb, animals? We must develop a high degree of emotional maturity which is reinforced by a strength of character and solid relationships. If we want to control our anger, these handholds are sometimes the only thing that can keep us grounded so we can calculate and use good judgment.

Breathing is key anytime the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) takes over. Studies have shown controlled deep breathing under stress slows your heart rate,, lowers your blood pressure and increases your cerebral faculties without diminishing the positive effects of epinephrine or norepinephrine needed to increase reflex and reaction times. Learning to control your breathing will help you control your bodies visceral responses.

Revelation 1:3 I live in Canada so I know how you feel, it gets frustrating when your government decides when and how you are able to defend yourself! There are so many gun regulations here in Canada for responsible gun owners but the government doesn't realize that the criminals that prey on innocent people don't follow the rules that responsible gun owners do.

      SERENITY NOW!
The thing to take solace in is that we have all the power. Any time we decide it is "too much" we can simply not follow the illegal gun laws and no one can stop us. That is the essence of 2A. It is not defended or taken away by the government, but by our own individual determination to choose freedom or perceived security.

Great stuff to control your emotions. I’m 67 and have bad knees so I can’t run and gun. Many of the tactics you teach are useful to someone like me! I’m a veteran and so I have a skill set that gives me an edge in most circumstances. I don’t anger quickly and haven’t yet mastered the rage switch, but I’m working on it. The one thing that angers me most is someone who wants to hurt those I love, friends and family! Great content as always, CAPS ARE HIGHLY OVERRATED! ;)

I remember all too well the angry young man that once lived inside of me. He controlled me and those around me with fear and rage. I used to think that I was a tough guy and that anyone who pissed me off "had it coming". Then I spent some time over seas in a small desert town North and East of Aleppo. It was in this small village that I found out what a tough guy really looked like. I faced things and people like I had never seen and honestly do not wish to ever face again. I learned that the problems that caused my rage were not really that important in the grand scheme of things. I learned that what was truly important in life was something that I had no control of at all. Mr Lovell, thank you for opening up to us and just being yourself. This is such a wonderful thing you are doing here.

Excellent video! I feel that most can relate to this and not just from a fighting aspect. I'm fairly new to your videos but now have been subscribed to your channel for a couple of months. I have some real life experiences that fit in really well with this episode. I played hockey my entire life and realized very quickly that I was not as skilled as other players on my teams. I was always strong and had good athletic ability; my coaches noticed this and started having me fight during the games. In most cases I was able to win solely by relying on my strength. My first fight I lost I was knocked unconscious, it was the first opponent I faced that was equally, if not stronger than me. I learned that you must be able to use your mind when put under stressful situations, there will always be somebody out there that's bigger and stronger than you. If you're able to think under stress it can give you a slight advantage which may be all that you need to win the fight. Great video!

I could not agree more! I have seen it a lot on the streets. I have seen other officer's emotions take over in a situation. You must be able to bottle your emotions and make decisions in the heat of the moment. When everything has cooled down. Then you can let your emotions out.

I'm enlisting in the army currently, going into signals and once I've learned that trade (as a fallback), I will enlist in Special Forces. Right now, I'm working part time as an education assistant at the school I graduated from, with the 12-13 year old students. I have to say, I find that I am becoming increasingly more and more in control of my emotions working in such an environment. When I do get a spike of anger (which is rare anyway), I box it away to the side and immediately try to determine a way to diffuse whatever situation. I'd 100% recommend working in a high school to anybody hoping to gain better mediatory skills and emotional control. I'll definitely take your advice (specifically the anger button that nobody can press) into account in the future, John, great vid.

As always, well spoken, thought out and presented. However, I think an important factor to point out is that just because someone is in a rage does not give you the upper hand. Many factors will play in to effect of the average wo/man when in any kind of defensive situation no matter what level of training. But when a person/threat can be most dangerous is when they are unpredictable, and can very well be unpredictable to a greater magnitude when in that rage state. None the less I, as you, maintain that retaining your a composure in any defensive or offensive situation would be critical to the outcome of your survival.

I feel like this is something that sort of comes with age. I was very quick as a teen and then into my twenties and really even earlier thirties to just flip out and go completely off the rails. Somewhere along the way you begin to realize that blind rage doesn't do anything other than create more problems. It's a very ugly thing that No one really comes out on top of. Thanks for the really great message. I only wish that I had the ability to understand this when I was younger. On the other hand, I think I'm able to much more effectively guide my son in what NOT to do, to be a better all around man because of the way I was when I was younger.

There's truth in your reasons behind blind rage,John...I witnessed it many years ago when my (younger&smaller sized brother) used to work @ a bar in the city here.Guys would often tell him they'd "kick the shit outta him"... Before the guy knew it, my brother would be showing them the wrong side of the door or knuckles along with an attitude adjustment. It surprised me because these guys seemed to be in shock when it happened but the bro could "hit that switch". You're right about self control.//God Speed to you John//T.D.

A timely video.I was recently in a fender bender; not hurt and the damage is minor. The guy that cut me off and hit me denied any wrong doing and just took off, all while on his cellphone the entire time!It was his denial of responsibility that so angered and enraged me that I was physically shaking! Fortunately, I was able to cool off in few minutes before the cops arrived and I could give them the tag number, a description of the vehicle and driver.Your right about not being able to think straight when enraged, I wouldn't been able to string together a simple sentence.I guess it's a good thing that guy took off without getting out of his truck; it would have made minor situation much worse.Lesson learned. Thanks

This definitely put words to how I shape my mindset in BJJ and other martial arts. I will never fight angry even when people try to push to fight angry. I always find my zen zone and approach an opponent in a very calm and collected manner, however I do it in an aggressive and athletic way. That is why I always hated the guys who would get super emotional with the tide of a football game when I played and its like stop being stressed over what you cant control and focus on what you can do better.

U have so much experience, real world experience and that is what made me like ur channel. In the fact that u actually reply! Looking forward to buying some apperal and Steel targets...

My rage took over in 1974 when I ran out of ammo in a gunfight w/a guy who just shot another cop right in front of me. As the bad guy was belly crawling toward a third officer I got so angry I charged him from behind and took him out w/my blackjack. Fight over, good guys (the cops) win. Your on point here.

Gotta keep that in check. My grandfather saw a lot of combat in WW2. He always said "keep a cool head." You cross that line into the red fog and your goose is cooked.

Old video but this one is why I am subscribing. I can relate a little too well to this. I'm trying to make more friends, never had a best friend so that would be nice to have someone to vent to.

something that helps me is when I feel it coming, I take an emotional step back and realize that it isn't time and I suppress it until I get home and hit the bag or I get over it, especially if it was just a dumb driver on the road and I try to open why I'm feeling this way that way I can make sense of it and to make sure its rational.

A brazilian YT channel "Tradutores de Direita" (Right Wing Translators) translated some of your videos.
Here in Brazil an extensive gun control is ruling. I dont have a gun, only a couple knifes and a basebal bat, that's my home defense.
The guns are a secondary thing in your videos, it is more a way of live, bringing wisdom. Thanks for it, keep it up, and God bless ya!
