  • Hey everyone! In this tutorial I show how I make a cosmic egg tie dye design that I’ve been experimenting with for a while and I’m calling it “Diagonal Drag”. There are lots of variations of this that I will be showcasing with a variety of different methods. All dye used in this video is from Dharma Trading. If anyone wants to check out my website or purchase any of my wearable art please go to the links below.

Can I ask why you use hot soda ash after applying the dye? What is the intention? I know soda ash changes the oH of the fibers so the dye bonds, but why add it at that point, why so much and why so hot? I’m curious.

This shirt had no prior soda ash soak and with this rolling method the inner rolls can get very tight so penetration with liquid can be difficult to achieve at the inner level. The intention behind the heat is that procion dyes can be set with a higher temperature very rapidly, causing the dye to set as soon as the proper ph liquid touches the fiber with dye. The heat will also cause the colors to bleed and blend through the shirt more giving the inner rolls a lighter appearance while allowing the top rolls to be darker creating more contrast in this design. Adding more SA water will allow more liquid to absorb deeper for better saturation, but you have to add it slowly. If I soaked the shirt prior, the dye would of set where it was placed. But with this method it allows the dye to flow throughout the shirt and it bleeds under the tied sections that would normally be white if dyed normally.
