I have to go with the Mapex on this one. Sounds great at both tunings. Just the right amount of “ring” from a metal snare. Seems pretty versatile. I’m pretty impressed with Mapex lately.
First place goes to the Mapex. Even on the room mic, you still get that little bit of ring. A close second is the Ludwig. Nice crack, just not as much ring on the room mic. Third is the Yamaha, and fourth is the Canopus.
This one’s easy…Canopus The Bronze. Their wires and die cast hoops probably help get it to how I like my snares to sound. Probably better heads than the Mapex too
Finally the Drumble returns!!! 🤘🏽 I had a gig last night so I just watched the video now. 1. Mapex Black Panther Predator 2. Yamaha 3. Canopus 4. Ludwig I discovered that I LOVE the sound of alloy snare drums. These in particular each have a certain magic about them. Shoutout to all of these companies for producing some mighty fine snare drums. You’re raising the bar for us drummers to reap the rewards. If you guys are looking for a worthy charity to donate that Mapex to, I know a guy. ; ) The Yamaha recording custom steel reminds me of the Keplinger snare that you guys showcased in the past. Killer look and sound!! A snare that rings is a snare that sings.
They're without a doubt all great drums.......but the Mapex gets my vote. It certainly edges out the others when you factor price into the decision process. Full disclosure; I own a Predator, but I'd absolutely vote fairly for the best sounding drum.
The Canopus for me, I just loooove pancake snares. I once participated in a band battle, and the sound at the venue was atrocious. All the snares just disappeared into a swamp of sound. Then it was our turn, I brought out my piccolo snare, tuned it extra high, and it cut right through the sound. Everyone commented afterwards that it was the only good sounding snaredrum that evening. When in doubt, always bring your pancake snare! :)
I thought the Canopus would sound like a “typical” piccolo snare. I really liked it. 1 Canopus 2 Mapex Predator 3 Ludwig 4 Yamaha (I really wanted to like this one more)
This was a tough one this time, but I'm going to have to go with that canopus bronze 14 x 4, I was really impressed by that one and I think it pile drived the competition into the ground!
I think the Luddy was the most well rounded on the close and room Mic, but the Canopus was also a standout. All great drums in this shootout, awesome video! 1. Ludwig Limited Edition (I felt was the best all rounder here) 2. Canopus Bronze (Close Mic for this drum sounded huge! But not as much on room). 3. Yamaha RC Aluminium (I prefer 5.5, but my journey with Aluminium is still early stages). 4. Mapex Predator (which is interesting because I normally gravitate towards Copper).
Tough one! For me it’s a tie between the Ludwig and Canopus. At the higher tuning the Canopus really shined and since that drum would better for the music I play, I’d personally go for that one but when you think ‘classic snare drum sound’ I don’t see how you couldn’t think the Ludwig Supralux.
1 Yamaha 2 Mapex 3 Canopus 4 Ludwig Never thought I would see ludwig at the bottom on any comparison but here we are. And also first three share the first place and ludwig comes fourth, but wanted my vote to count.
I always wish there was a 'blind study' where we could hear the drums initially without knowing which model we were hearing. I am prejudiced and it impairs my ability to be subjective. To my ears on this iMac, the Canopus was magnificent. The Ludwig really appealed to me as well. If I was in my buying mode, I'd have one on the way already. The Yamaha was nice, crisp, dry and articulate I have always like the die cast hoops for their contribution to the sound of the drum. It and the Mapex were really good sounding drums and quite different. Any of these would be fine drums to gig or record with, IMHO.
1. Mapex--low and high tuning this thing "sang!" 2. Canopus--this did not sound like a 4" depth snare, sounded meatier 3. Ludwig--good all-around, no slouch, I could be happy with this one 4. Yamaha--Impressive up until high tuning, that ring was not doing it for me
I reckon the Yamaha is legendary for reasons. That aluminum dryness is really doing it for me. Honorable mention to the Canopus. Never quite liked bronze, or shells at that depth, but it’s really working great on that drum. Very colorful.
Canopus for sound only. If you ask which one is the best overall, Yamaha. The hardware is great, strainer is smooth, and the price is unbeatable, especially since you’re selling it for 10% off right now.
Tough one. Three blind listens. Low room sound was three dimensional to my ears on only one snare: Canopus Bronze. Has to be my pick for that reason, given they sounded so alike, again to my ears. Thank you DCP. Edit: Focused and listened to just the Canopus three more times... good heavens. You would never guess it was a 4. Sounds, at least, like a 6.5. It's hard not to pick a USA made Ludwig every time one is in competition. This time is a perfect example. You know it's the drum that has a proven "it will blend with the music" pedigree. It's not exciting like the Canopus, but the Canopus doesn't have the "proven", it will fit in the mix, stage and recording (especially) history. Wish I could own both. 😊 Just my two cents, which is worth a penny, maybe.
They are all great sounding drums! Cant go wrong with any of them. I preferred the Yamaha Aluminum just slightly more than I liked the Supraluxe....then the Canopus then the Mapex. Tough choice!
Ludwig Supraluxe first, Canopus is a close second. Brass and bronze are my favorites. Glad you shared a video of this limited edition Ludwig. I purchased the Blackest Beauty and I may have to have this one too….
Higher tuning: 1. Can't decide between the Canopus and the Yamaha. Canopus has a bit more bite, so I think it wins. 2. Ludwig. 3. Mapex. Canopus drums are so impressive!
You basically said exactly what I was thinking. My brain said Canopus, my gut said Ludwig, my heart said yamaha, and unfortunately my ears said mapex…gotta get my hearing checked. Isn’t the predator snare basically tearing through the competition right now? Surely there’s no way that thing wins outright by the end…
#1 Canopus Bronze
I have to go with the Mapex on this one. Sounds great at both tunings. Just the right amount of “ring” from a metal snare. Seems pretty versatile. I’m pretty impressed with Mapex lately.
First place goes to the Mapex. Even on the room mic, you still get that little bit of ring. A close second is the Ludwig. Nice crack, just not as much ring on the room mic. Third is the Yamaha, and fourth is the Canopus.
100%
That Canopus sounds amazing in all tunings.
This one’s easy…Canopus The Bronze. Their wires and die cast hoops probably help get it to how I like my snares to sound. Probably better heads than the Mapex too
Mapex uses USA Remo Ambassadors on their Black Panther snares...
Finally the Drumble returns!!! 🤘🏽
I had a gig last night so I just watched the video now.
1. Mapex Black Panther Predator
2. Yamaha
3. Canopus
4. Ludwig

The Yamaha recording custom steel reminds me of the Keplinger snare that you guys showcased in the past. Killer look and sound!! A snare that rings is a snare that sings.
Mapex predator is my favorite, love that overtone.
Canopus a close second
They're without a doubt all great drums.......but the Mapex gets my vote.
It certainly edges out the others when you factor price into the decision process.

Mapex for the win!
Loved the Mapex!
I thought the Canopus would sound like a “typical” piccolo snare. I really liked it.
1 Canopus
2 Mapex Predator
3 Ludwig
4 Yamaha (I really wanted to like this one more)
Mapex Predator and Yam Recording Al, was pretty close but I have to vote for the Mapex Predator, because I prefer the "overtone/ring"
Low tuning, Canopus. Higher Tuning Mapex. All around the Mapex for me.
Can't believe it but Mapex Predator.
I love that y'all have Hacksaw in these...I loved that dude when I was a kid!
Hacksaw is unbelievably cool
Mapex
Canopus
Yamaha
Ludwig
Tough choice, I liked them all, but my vote goes to the Mapex. I have black nickel version and it is phenomenal.
Mapex sounds amazing
This was a tough one this time, but I'm going to have to go with that canopus bronze 14 x 4, I was really impressed by that one and I think it pile drived the competition into the ground!
In my opinion, Mapex Predator should be in the next round!
Mapex Predator gets my vote.
It’s the Canopus, for me!
I liked the Mapex the most.
Canopus for the win! DCP rocks - thanks for being an awesome store and making helpful and entertaining videos. I appreciate it!
I loved the Canopus! Thank you!
Mapex Predator has to go through! Great video series and really enjoyed the last visit to the store - keep up the great work!
Mapex- shed loads of tone. 👍🏻
🥇Canopus
🥈Ludwig
🥉Mapex
🎱Yamaha
Mapex. But I’d gladly play any of them.
I'm going to go with Canopus on this one. It sounds great in both tunings and it also has a unique look.
Really close, but the Mapex has a touch more character for me
1. Mapex
2. Ludwig
3. Canopus
4. Yamaha
The Canopus is my pick, much to my surprise.
Canopus
I like the Canopus the most. Yamaha second.
Mapex for me! Canopus second.
Ludwig with Mapex as real close second! I'm really loving Mapex these days!
uuuuufffff this week is one of the toughest..... real SnarePorn video !!! Im goint for the CANOPUS THE BRONZE !!!
That Mapex is calling my name. Sounds gorgeous to my ears.
That piccolo sounded way better than I would have expected but I'm still going with the mapex! Mapex for the win
Canopus,Ludwig, mapex ,yamaha.
I knew The Bronze was gonna win when I saw it. It was my favorite from the best in bronze video.
Canopus, Mapex, Yamaha, Ludwig
Canopus the Bronze!
Mapex predator!
Mannn that Yamaha sounds SO clean!! DCP = Top Shelf!! 💯🥁
I think the Luddy was the most well rounded on the close and room Mic, but the Canopus was also a standout. All great drums in this shootout, awesome video!
1. Ludwig Limited Edition (I felt was the best all rounder here)
Yes the 5.5 Yamaha. I like it better than the 6.5. Lil crisper and still has enough back beat power.
Tough one! For me it’s a tie between the Ludwig and Canopus. At the higher tuning the Canopus really shined and since that drum would better for the music I play, I’d personally go for that one but when you think ‘classic snare drum sound’ I don’t see how you couldn’t think the Ludwig Supralux.
Canopus. Oh my God.
1 Yamaha
2 Mapex
3 Canopus
4 Ludwig
Never thought I would see ludwig at the bottom on any comparison but here we are. And also first three share the first place and ludwig comes fourth, but wanted my vote to count.
Mapex all the way.
I always wish there was a 'blind study' where we could hear the drums initially without knowing which model we were hearing. I am prejudiced and it impairs my ability to be subjective. Canopus. Had I not seen it, I'd have thought it was at least 6 1/2" deep.
1. Mapex--low and high tuning this thing "sang!"
2. Canopus--this did not sound like a 4" depth snare, sounded meatier
3. Ludwig--good all-around, no slouch, I could be happy with this one
4. Yamaha--Impressive up until high tuning, that ring was not doing it for me
Canopus! What an amazing sound in both tunings.
The Canopus shocked me. Great sound!
Canupus Bronze
My vote goes to the Canopus "The Bronze" snare, to my ears it had the most pleasant sound and had the best crack of these four
I reckon the Yamaha is legendary for reasons. That aluminum dryness is really doing it for me.
Honorable mention to the Canopus. Never quite liked bronze, or shells at that depth, but it’s really working great on that drum. Very colorful.
1. Canopus- especially in the high tuning.
2. Ludwig- a really close second, so much depth.
3. Mapex
4. Yamaha
Canopus for sound only. If you ask which one is the best overall, Yamaha. The hardware is great, strainer is smooth, and the price is unbeatable, especially since you’re selling it for 10% off right now.
I don’t like piccolo snares but that Canopus is simply perfect
1. Canopus
2. Ludwig
3. Mapex
4. Yamaha
Tough one. Three blind listens. Low room sound was three dimensional to my ears on only one snare: Canopus Bronze. Has to be my pick for that reason, given they sounded so alike, again to my ears. Canopus “The Bronze”, however that Ludwig DCP was a REALLY close second!
This was the toughest one yet. I think the Canopus sounds the best in all tunings.
Thought I was going to go for the Canopus, but the Ludwig was a pleasant surprise.
1. Yamaha Aluminum
2. Ludwig Supraluxe
3. The Bronze
4. Mapex
Wish there was time to hear a medium tuning.
Mapex for the win. Would have thought one of the others....
Copper snares have the best woody sounding overtones.
Hate to say this but Mapex. Damn.
I’m not normally bronze fan, but t Canopus was my favorite this week.
Mapex Predator
I was very surprised with the sound of the canopas , bronze drum. So I chose that one.
I’m torn between the Mapex and the Canopus. Both sound great to me. I’m super impressed by the low tuning on a drum as shallow as the Canopus.
The Canopus. Looks great, sounds great, and it's just 4 inches deep so it's not heavy.
They are all great sounding drums! Cant go wrong with any of them. I preferred the Yamaha Aluminum just slightly more than I liked the Supraluxe....then the Canopus then the Mapex. Tough choice!
All sound amazingly close. Very hard to pick one out of the bunch...but if I had to choose....my first choice Yamaha and Mapex close second.
Mapex
I need to get me a 4". Every time I hear one on your videos I am a fan. Canopus for me.
My pick...Canopus Bronze.
Canopus "The Bronze" is my 31 choice! Such an amazing Big snare sound from such a small drum!
They all have good and useful sounds, but the Canopus sounds the most direct and solid. Canopus gets my vote.
Definitely the mapex predator.
Canopus got my attention right away in a very hard battle! A beautiful sounding snare!
Canopus. I’m biased because I just bought one. 😂
You guys are really working Tony. Does he get a raise? Love his playing for sure. Tough one to pick this week, but I am going with the Yamaha. Thanks.
1:Canopus, 2:Yamaha, 3:Ludwig, 4:Mapex
1 Yamaha
2 mapex ( surprisingly )
3Ludwig
4 can o piss ( 4" )
Canapus The Bronze
Canopus did it for me. Thanks guys!
I enjoyed the Ludwig the most. Second up - Yamaha, then Canopus, then Mapex. The rimshots on the Ludwig clinched it, but all nice drums!
Ludwig Supraluxe first, Canopus is a close second. Brass and bronze are my favorites. Glad you shared a video of this limited edition Ludwig. I purchased the Blackest Beauty and I may have to have this one too….
Canopus sounds fantastiic
The Canopus 14x4 rang my bell!
The canopus did it for me! And I'm normally a fan of deeper snares!
The Bronze seems to have the attractive tone for me.
Higher tuning: 1. Can't decide between the Canopus and the Yamaha. Canopus has a bit more bite, so I think it wins. 2. Ludwig. 3. Mapex.
Canopus drums are so impressive!
Canopus!
The Canopus wins! So pretty sounding!
My heart says Yamaha, my gut says Ludwig but my ears say Mapex.
My teacher told me ”Pearl, the best reason to play Yamaha. And then what you’re really using is Mapex”
