  • Do snare drum materials sound different and if so, which metal is the best? To answer this question, our host Simon compared 32 different 14"x6.5" snares with different metals (for example steel, stainless steel, bronze, aluminium, brass, copper & others). All of them have been high tuned to make the comparison easier. Which one did you like best?
In the second video (release October 5th) all of them will be tuned medium.

What do you think: Does the metal matter? And if so, which snare drum did you like best?

Ludwig pewter over copper was my favourite, but all of them were great. The little milleniums are surprisingly good for the price.

some of the others sounded great too, but it's interesting how all of the Ludwigs sounded good, at least to my ears...

I’m a Tama guy. SLP Steel is really a snare for me. Must say though that Ludwig is Ludwig and has always been. I’m positively impressed about how nice aluminium snares sound. The Tama star reserve is actually the aluminium version and this is beefy and nice. Missed the Star Reserve Brass here. It sounds so great. So many great snares. Quality is so high today that only nuances makes them differ. Thanks for a marvellous video.

Man, this must have taken forever to record and shoot! Thank you for this comparison, we really live in an amazing time that so many different instruments are available in all price brackets, and somehow they all sound good! It would be tough to pick a favorite, but if I had to choose one I think I would go with the Yamaha Recording Custom Aluminum.

Man that must have been a ton of work! What a great comparison. I have to say there is no single snare that did not sound good, these were all well tuned and set up and of course quality instruments. It seems to me, that almost any Ludwig snare sounds fantastic, as well as any DW snare, even the PDP models. Also liked the Gretsch "Brass" snare a lot. And I'm always surprised by the sound of Mapex Black Panther snares... you get a whole lotta bang for the buck there. I missed my DW knurled steel snare, since it has a massive steel shell, but I think it might be discontinued for a while now. Thank you for your great test and the effort made to tune each snare similar and playing almost identical grooves for comparison... thats a lot to listen to and I started to fade out a little bit, but still worth it! :)

I‘m missing „the one and only go to“ metal snare. The Ludwig Black Beauty. It would be nice to her this snare with equal tuning and with the same conditions in comparison to all the other interesting instruments.
Well done video even without the BB.

Thank you for doing this. Yes, loved this. Please continue to do these types of videos. Yes, I think the metal matters. Hopefully I'm not hearing with my eyes, but that Ludwig Supraphonic just has that perfect sound, both Hammered and non-Hammered versions, especially on the outro part of the playing. Gretsch Black Nickel Over Steel is a very, very, very close second for me.
Edit: Gretsch by a nose. Pearl Sensitones get Honorable mention as do the DWs.
Ludwig Raw Copperphonic and Lugwig Copperphonic in first place, if just played studio gigs... both sound pre-compressed and fat, but crispy.
Overall, all the Ludwigs just impressed... just something there with them, except for the Pewter over Copper.
Edit 2: Bought the Gretsch Black Nickel Over Steel. Just a no brainer, given the sound and price.
