AND PLEASE NOTE: Hummingbirds are federally protected wildlife. Do not attempt to rescue or interfere with a hummingbird without first contacting your local Hummingbird Rescue for information. All filming of this video was done only after being in contact with licensed Hummingbird Rescue experts for guidance. It has, still, been brought to my attention through some comments that I should not have filmed the birds that close. Please take what I have been advised and do not film birds close up unless you have a very long lens or a web cam. I apologize to the bird lovers I have upset by this ignorance on my part. I can be contacted at sheri@sheriwatson.com. ADDITIONAL NOTE: I inadvertently passed on incorrect information in this video. The "squirt" from the beak of the babies is actually their tongue. Also, the woman I spoke to from the hummingbird rescue referred to the baby's "hair" and I say that several times in the video. I have been otherwise informed that the "hair" should be called "feathers." I also failed to mention that the nests are often secured using spider webs. And, it turns out the first bird to leave the nest is the male, not the female. You did a fabulous job capturing the development of hummingbird life. I've had 4 seasons of them nesting under my front door alcove, but keep a respectful distance. They are marvelous creatures.

with respect, how can you measure the comfort level of birds who are trapped in a nest and who mama likely taught (or was actively communicating to them during the intrusions) to be silent near what they had to experience as a giant predator? You cannot measure their vital signs that would indicate stress. Do please note the author's added comments re: her benevolent ignorance about being intrusive. If we truly wish to help and promote wildlife, we have to resist anthropomophizing them by assuming that they're ok with our intrusions just because they show distress differently than Homo sapiens. Thank you for considering my comments.

Sheri, your honesty about what you learned from filming this is admirable. We particularly appreciated your graciousness toward bird lovers that were unhappy. You didn't film it out of malicious intent so hopefully those who were 'offended' will realize that. If not, that's their issue. This was beautifully filmed and we especially liked the commentary, even if inaccurate in places. I hope you do more because you clearly have a gift. Hummingbirds are difficult to see that closely so this provided a wonderful opportunity to follow their growth. A real blessing! Thank you!

Hello everyone. As we head into hummingbird nesting season, please be advised that this was my first film and I have since learned that it is NOT okay to film too close to the birds. I apologize for my error and was not aware of this and also was not planning to make this film when I began photographing the birds. The project just evolved into this film. I have re-edited a completely new narration with all this information, but I am unable to simply swap out the films or I will lose all my views. +gus lane Hello Gus. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it informational. I used a small, consumer Canon digital elph for the initial shots as I also shoot with Nikon DSLR and don't have flash. The better stills were taken with my D80, at the time. Now I have the 7200 and like the 7100, it shoots HD video, so you might be able to get some motion footage with that camera. Yes, hummingbirds are very territorial. I can never figure out these videos where I see hundreds of hummingbirds feeding together. Here in Los Angeles, only ever one at a time and if one comes through to feed, another one might dive bomb it away. The ones in my film are allen's hummingbirds. Enjoy your nestlings. Regards, Sheri

Hello Terry. No! The mother did not kill the babies. I had a lot of birders write to complain that I filmed too close to the birds, something I learned is not a good thing to do as it not normally part of a birds life to have a human poking a camera in it's face. I get it. The babies both fledged. It's just not cool to disturb nature like that.

I recently rescued one in Barbados. It had flown into a building and couldn't find its way out, always flying against the window. After a while it got tired, so I could grab it and take it outside.

I saves a hummingbird from my cat once . I happen to go out back rigjt in time . My cat had just caught it one second before I noticed the bird was in her mouth and I stomped my foot down as hard as I could yelling at the same time and startling my cat she dropped the humming bird . So I picked it up into my hands and the bird had latched both claws/feet hold its long beak . Really wierd. So I carefully peeled off each claw from its beak and was checking it out close didn't appear to be injured at all just in shock and really scared so I gently put my hands up and down saying to the hummingbird go little guy go go and next thing I know it took off and flew away .. so awesome. . For me that was a real treat that I got to hold a hummingbird in the palm of my hands as it flew way saving it .. that's somthing that not very many people get to experience in there lifetime .. . It will never happen again.in my lifetime so I was pretty happy .. Anyway just thought I would share that with you ...Sorry if I was rambling on there a bit ..

So glad you were able to save the little guy. My wife saved a pair of hummers once. They were a pair of Anna's hummers--a male and a female. They flew into a window, and fell to the ground. My wife thought they were dead. She picked them up, and started stroking their backs with her finger, VERY gently. They seemed to recover fairly quickly. The female took off first, followed by the male a couple minutes later.
Cat's saliva is deadly to hummingbirds so regardless if it looked fine and flew away it most likely did not live. The right thing to do would have been to contact your local bird sanctuary to have it treated. I am not trying to be a downer but I do feel the need to let people know so maybe the next little birdie will live.

We had a baby come and land on my husband's shoulder while we sat in the back porch swing. It sat their for at least 5 minutes with me next to him. The mama bird was in the small tree next to us squeaking up a storm to her baby. There were two of them one was practicing flying on the other side of the tree. It was really amazing to watch.

Although you did not know about getting too close ---your filming was beautiful. Very glad the Humming bird babies fledged and that all turned out well in that they were never left by their mother. Despite your novice level of knowledge you gave many people a chance to see the beauty of these creatures. Wow Those baby hummingbirds really trusted you too. At around 6:00 the second one to Fledge preened it's self in front of you. When a bird preens itself in your presence that is the ultimate sign of trust and being at ease. :-)
Wow! That is so cool. I never knew this. That's amazing!! Unfortunately, I had turned the camera off because the bird had been hovering there for awhile, in front of me, seemingly not doing anything, and just as I turned it off, it flew away, so I was unable to actually capture it's first flight, on film. But I was there, and saw it. ;-) How do you know this about the bird preening in front of you?
I've had many different kinds of pet birds for many years. I learned this about preening through my research that I did in order take good care of my pet birds. Also I'm forever a "student" of wild birds outside. Now you may see wild birds outside that do preening but you will never see a wild bird preen itself when it's just inches away from you. Not unless it trusts you completely, which rarely happens. If a wild bird ends up too close to a human being you will notice just about everything in its body language EXCEPT for preening :-). They may squawk and flap their wings and try to get away, they may stiffen up like a board, but they certainly don't relax and preen. But, these little guys had been seeing you probably daily for their entire short lives. So they knew you meant them zero harm. They trusted you completely. :-)

Not trying to be a nay sayer but this simply is not true. Birds instinctively preen...and do so quite often. Most of a birds day is consumed with foraging,preening,&sleeping..most of the time in that exact order. So if you spend enough time around a bird,they will preen,whether the trust is there or not. I'm talking only in terms of birds that don't have the choice of fleeing..like a [caged] pet bird or like these lil tiny flappers that didnt really have the option to go anywhere as they [obviously] couldn't fly yet.
I used to watch doves nesting on a regular basis. It's amazing how much personality those teensy little creatures have.

Thank you for the very nice video. I love humming birds and I make sure there is food outside for them and I love watching them feed. I love how the male will let the females eat but other males are not allowed. And I think its so cute. They are gods little angles well I think of that about all birds. In the bible it says that birds are his favorite and I can see why. They way they can fly the way a lot of them stay with the same mate and they way they take care of there young. I wish I could fly just like they can. But I couldn't or wouldn't like to be out in the cold and rain or the snow or the wind. SO I give them there due and I respect them and I make sure to be carful what I put out so I am not hurting the birds. Anyways thanks you so much I have always wanted to see how the young grow up and now I got to see it for the first time. You did a wonderful job on getting pictures and videos of them. Do you feed them???? And were they up in y7your tree??? Man hummingbirds are so beautiful and small and its so amazing on how fast they fly and I can not believe you were lucky to get to see it all unfold in front of you. That is a gift case I have yet to see a hummingbirds nest. And I do not think I will ever see one. Do they use the same nest year after year or do they build a new one???
Hello Crystal. Thank you for your comment. I was lucky enough to find this nest just outside my window. I stood on a window ledge to be able to film them, but learned afterwards that it is not okay to film as close to the birds as I did. This is my first film, and when I began photographing the birds, I had no idea I'd eventually make a film. I made some mistakes, so please read the description below the video to learn corrected information about the birds that I learned after making the film. I did not feed the babies. That is Mama's job. I did not have a feeder nearby, either. I have learned that in some cases the Mama will come back and reuse the nest again, but I don't know how common that is. In my case, once the birds fledged, no one ever returned to the nest. I learned a lot from this web site www.worldofhummingbirds.com and also from speaking to a hummingbird rehabber. Thank you! Thank you I am going to learn about them. I am glade that the mom didn't leave the babies behind so you must have done something right. It was such a great video I shared it with a lot of my friends who are also big fans of the humming bird. I am lucky to have a couple of them in my yard and they come to my feeder all the time. When I first saw one I told my mom how I saw a great big bee and once I saw it again I said there the bee is there. MY was giggling at me and that's when she told me about humming birds and ever since I saw them for the first time I have been wanting to know everything about them. And thank you for the web sight I will be going there to learn more. I can not weight to see what ells you have gotten on camera.
