- This is a short video of an Eastern gray squirrel moving into the nest box during fall season in Illinois USA. They will use this as shelter for the winter and hopefully raising their young in the coming Spring season.

I'm glad you stated "or" as you won't see both animals sharing the same yard. Squirrels eventually take over and drive other species out.

How do you know the busy one was the male? I’m honestly asking because I was wondering if it was a male and female or two females since I have seen other houses with sisters in it only because they use each others heat in winter so buddy up but not necessarily for raising family. I though probably a couple too but was thinking the one all excited and eager to decorate was the female because wives get excited, want to decorate and make it “homey” where the men are usually more laid back. They are obviously squirrels not humans but it was super weird that only one squirrel did everything while the other was just sitting there, not even being a lookout or anything, almost like it was falling asleep lol

I got my dad a box for his birthday and I hope he enjoys putting it up and the squirrels or some kind of animal makes a home inside. ❤
I’m a huge cat & dog lover but also every since I was a kid I’ve loved rabbits, marmots, otters, beavers, chipmunks & squirrels. When I was a little kid My Mom always fed the birds & squirrels in our yard so I became very fond of squirrels & they are nostalgic to me due to those memories. They are adorable & quite smart & very industrious little buggers. Watching them is actually relaxing & their little quirks are funny. Glad these guys have a nice little apartment now that keeps them warm & safe.

Two young squirrels found a good nest box to keep warm in the winter time and bring nuts to snack the weather very badly.

I would love to put these around for our neighborhood squirells except my neighbor already hates me because the nuts I give to them get buried in his yard. Eeeek. Very kind of you to do this for them

Thank you so much for this video years ago I lived in Seaback, Washington and I built a squirrel house for the red squirrel that lived in the fir tree next to our house and when we opened it that little squirrel had filled the whole thing tight with the moss that grows on those trees up there And he had made a tunnel to sleep in. I'm sure he was toasty warm all winter, but that was before the days of trail cams or GoPro.

Ive started taking nuts to the park when we walk our dog. There are several squirrels there and they chatter at us when we walk by.
The chattering is just the first sign of trouble. When the squirrels start forming up and snapping their fingers in unison and waving little knives around while doing some kind of _West Side Story_ dance number, you'll know they have formed a gang and that the park is now their turf.
The babies came down from the nest in the oak tree outside my house on June 2. Pandemonium as they chased each other around for four hours, then all went on their way. It happens that way every year. Last year one stopped to press its face up against the window to look at me. This year, one of the babies has a bright red tail.

I have two Black Squirrels in an oak tree In my backyard. That tree is hollow and it needs to come down so thanks for saying that they breed in June as well. The tree is going to have to come down this fall and I want to get a nice nest box for them so that they can continue their families.
I have several walnut trees so they love it!
It’s funny how the one squirrel is just sitting there almost looks like it’s sleeping while the other squirrel is super active and excited to decorate and get things done. Not sure if it’s a mates pair or just friends but it reminds me of how human couples are when they move into a new home. The man is usually laid back but the wife is eager to decorate and busy planning how to renovate and make the place seem “homey”. The busy squirrel would be the wife in this scenerio

This box needs a ledge on the inside below the entrance. Half the size of the inside diameter. A raccoon can still reach inside and can easily grab a squirrel.

As a mother, I was a nervous wreck after the chewed away the wood to expose the metal screws. I mean ‘you could put an eye out!’😂

This needs some corrections and info. This is not a couple, they are young siblings, around 5 months old. Greys are solitary. One of them is sick or injured, resting most of the time. The nesting box is not predatory safe, it needs 2 access point, one up high, one on the other side down low. Squirrels will flee when a racoon arrives. When there is only one entrance, they will run right into the claws. Don't use any screws or nails on the inside, they will chew the wood around it and get hurt eventually.

Thanks for your explanations! I was wondering why one squirrel did everything while the other one did nothing. I thought it was a male vs female behaviour. It makes sense that one of them might be injured or sick 😢

There is no way a human made this. I saw 3 squirrels making a similar wooden box home just yesterday. I think the squirrels started selling them on Amazon, too.

I've only ever had fox squirrels in my central illinois neighborhood. Almost 40 years in my current house & I had a gray squirrel show up for the first time last year. I was ecstatic, I'd never seen one before. He got chased by the fox squirrels and only stayed a few months. I hope he's alright, wherever he went. My neighbors all hate me for feeding them and attracting them to the neighborhood. Sorry, not sorry 😊

How big is the hole to enter and exit?
Thanks for watching. The hole diameter is 3 inches. This will protect the squirrels from predators like raccoons, cats and owls.

We have so many squirrels here in New England and my backyard as well. I love wildlife but when they dig up my garden and the mulch I have around my house time for them to go. The past 3 years I have trapped over 40 + squirrels and drive at least 5 miles to release them into the woods outside town. This year 2024 I have at least 6 of them playing grab ass and time for them to go come spring.
Found out just one of the squirrels was going out to get the leaves while the other arrange the room

Many of the trees around me have been removed, and it is impacting the squirrels and birds.
I try to leave the acorns, and some leaves, every fall. My neighbor has landscapers do fall cleanup, with their blowers. Nothing is left behind.

I have a question. When two or three squirrels build a nest together to sleep, it means they are family, a couple to pass winter, or they can stay together even if they are from other families as a form of survival? These two seems a couple or two family members staying together.
Seems to me they are siblings, they left the shelter as soon as winter ends

@@IllinoisBackyardBirdsNWildlife They have to chew on wood because their incisors never stop growing. They have to grind them down or the teeth will grow out of their mouth to the point that they can't eat anymore. They grow about 6 inches every year.

Squirrels chewed on wood blocks inside the nest and exposed nails as though they were sticking out. It’s their fault but it’s a bit concerning in case babies blindly wiggle around and get scratched by the nails
I already removed the wood screws that the sharp ends are facing the inside of the nest box. Thanks for the comments and for viewing.

Unfortunately these guys have taken over in the PNW, where they do not belong. They displace western gray squirrels, because they are so obnoxious 😊. Little effers dig up my garden, grrr.
