- Big thanks to the team at Unico and SNK for sending me this traveling review unit and providing me permission to do a full and proper tear down on it.
I go over my thoughts and feelings as well as show you guys exactly what needs to be done to mod and replace hardware, as well as tell you the internal specs of the device.
I also let you know my thoughts on if this is a cabinet worth modding.
For more information on this device check out this site: www.snkmvsx.com/

Great review! I agree with you on just about everything. The buttons are good enough IMO and I like how easy it would be to swap them out. I also agree about not PC\Pi modding it. Was able to get mine with a Hylo X USB boot softmod so it's perfect right now. I came here to see the teardown and you didn't disappoint. Thanks again.
great review! love seeing the teardown and definitely on my list as a potential pickup now
Thanks Restalgia, nice review. Fair, balanced, and honest. I got this 2 days after thanksgiving on Saturday so i posted quick review. I love it.
Nicely done and great to see the tear down!
This is made for modding, hence the 6 buttons layout. It's nice to have Sanwa buttons and JLF joysticks for it.
I would even suggest going with the LED buttons and LED ball tops, which makes the Sanwa parts look even nicer.
In terms of games, do not just put any game in this or you can ruin it. I would say keep it just Capcom, Treasure, Psikyo, and Neo Geo which is what this was made for.
The riser is very nice, infinite times better than the Arcade 1Up cabs, which is why I feel the riser makes all the difference, and really makes this machine very valuable.
A lit coin door is a nice add-on too, and something to cover the small fake one on the bar top front.
I also agree the speakers should be better put underneath the marquee, it is the best place for them.
Ultimately you can't go wrong with this machine, it is definitely worth it even as it comes. The selection of games is fantastic in my opinion, only missing Art Of Fighting 2.
But there are many other great games you can add like:
- Blazing Star
- Ganryu
- SNK Vs. Capcom SVC Chaos
- Matrimelee
- Rage Of The Dragons
- Prehistoric Isle 2
- Windjammers
- Aero Fighters 2
- Aero Fighters 3
- Super Sidekicks 2
- Super Sidekicks 3
- Pulstar
I just noticed they put probably the best titles on the marquee of the unit. Ms3, garou, samshow 2 and kof98. Also understand why so many kof’s on the unit because many people are hardcore fans of specific versions. The select button is used for the aes versions. It will pause the game and also in the training modes of certain games like garou it brings up the in game menu. Not sure if the select button on the unit is used for this purpose
I have already ordered one...can't wait
Hi how is it I'm ordering mine soon
U got 1 , Congrats brotha..!!!
Another Brilliant Review By Restalgia❤️🏁👍 no need for a New PCB
Finally became available in Canada at a reasonable price of $599 (including both bartop and stand) this is a great deal for those like me that love Neo Geo (I own the original Neo Geo CDZ console with lots of games) this will blend in perfectly with my other 3/4 cabs. Thanks Steve! Can't wait to curb side pick my order up on Tuesday!
Very cool teardown. I won't be modding this one, with the exception of putting in a 19, or 20" monitor, as I'm legally blind. Other than that, unless I find the buttons to be too bad to use, no modding of this unit. Thanks for the video. :)
Would love to pick this up and add more Neo Geo games plus a bunch of MAME games. This looks to be a great little arcade machine that’s worth the money compared to Arcade1Up
Keep an eye on neocvera. His team will be able to do what asked for very soon.
Nice video. Wish you would have opened up the marquee to see if there was space to move the speakers there.
I cant wait till the hylostick team gets thier hands on this!
10:56 wow Linus signed that one!
i never get a response from the company that makes them :(
Like you reached out to them? Send me a message on FB man, maybe your reaching out to the wrong guy
This unit has been taken apart and put back together more times than you can guess
I would totally replace the buttons and joystick.. has alot of modding potential.
Hello which sanwa buttons fit does the 30mm work?
You and madpixel were the only ones that gave a brutally honest review of the quality of the buttons. I think the only reason they went 6 buttons was because they couldn’t fit four across. That’s a deal breaker for a lot of hardcore neo geo fans. I don’t understand why they couldn’t use the same sticks and buttons on the arcade stick they released because those were decent and the same company made these.
They put 6 buttons because the Engineers for this device are probably fans of emulation and knew other fans would want to emulate other games and maybe even other systems. Perhaps even trying to turn this into a Mame machine.
Well I didn't think we would be able to buy this one in Canada but it looks like Canada Computers will be selling it after all. Sadly we don't have a Canada Computers near me so the shipping cost may price it out of my range. I'm really interested and hopefully another store front offers this down the line.
I spent 699 euros to Italy, raiser, delivery and custom 😂
@@sebastianpauldora5749 please tell me how it was is good graphics the pixel the screen when playing metal slug is polishet like the original arcade
I have soft modded mine with HyloX. Completely transforms the cabinet into something amazing for the family. Unfortunately there is not a lot of support of further development of HyloX...can't play games like MK 1,2,3 Dragons lair series and NBA jam series. But Capcom, Neo Geo, sega genesis and arcade classics work....Pac-Man dig dug Galaga etc. More than 500 games total.
With how HyloX was stopped I want to drop a pi in this now. I guess a few people have already and utilize the volume, power, and marquee features.
@@nicholasspero9819 I ended up selling mine and going with an arcade 1 up build with a pi4. Had both standing side by side to each other and found myself gravitating to the arcade 1up more. Mainly because of wrist area comfort, height and line of sight (marquee does not block) But the build of the arcade 1 up is not as sturdy.
@@gundamovsscalemodel8941 yeah the line of sight block is an issue. There is a riser that helps with that so I may add that in the future. My other option i was thinking about was the legends ultimate. To many toys. Haha
@@nicholasspero9819 HaHa that was in my shopping cart as well....That machine is a lot larger....but seems like a lot less tinkering which is a good thing. So many options these days...better than the past digging for mint arcade machines and paying a fortune. Hard to find any without scratches and cigarette burns. Someone should make burn stickers to get the authentic experience.
Hey you didn’t really show much of the inside but is there room to relocate the speakers under the marquee?
How would you go about upgrading the audio on this thing....
Is it possible to assign button combinations to certain buttons?
Anybody know what size the buttons are? Thanks!
Does anyone have any good tricks on how to pull the wires out from the controllers? Got mine yesterday and it’s literally set in there...
They glued the connections in to prevent them from coming loose during shipping but in my opinion, were done so you don't modify it. You just have to be very careful and scrape it off with something. It's a real hassle but it can be done.
You are right the the buttons must be switched out! What do you recommend?
Suzo Happ with Cherry DX44 micro switches.
@@cbuc1125 thx for helping out!
I just want to see someone mod the speakers/audio.
No reason to put any new PCB in it. There will be a hack. Check that monitor spec , I still don’t think it’s 4x3. . Remember their specs show a resolution that’s consistent with a 5x4 aspect. Just measure very specifically and see.
Yeah I wasn't 100 percent sure, but they are advertising a 4:3 on their website. It's strange, since to me it appeared to be a 5:4
@@Restalgia Hey bud, it’s a 5:4 aspect ratio screen. I think it’s still wrong on their website. Good job on your review, you should ship it over to your fellow Canadian Michael B next 🇨🇦
@@RetroRalph i was 100 percent going to say 5:4, but when I went on the site I saw 4:3 and didn't question it. Should have listened to my gut. I would love to ship it to Mike!
What is the size of the button please ?
Very frustrating. I've already seen other videos that claim you need to dremel out the holes just a bit to accommodate Sanwa, but yet another that says the cheap Sanwa clones on Amazon are plug&play: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MP2HKDQ Why can't these RUclipsrs understand how to take a darn caliper or even a ruler and figure this out before posting? How much does it suck to get new buttons only to find out you need to dremel? How to know what buttons to get to begin with? Come on, people, get it together, this really isn't a big ask, IMO.
@@Chuckolicious yes, nothing clear.... no reference for beginners ....
@@tequilachow I should have that kit I linked to in another day or two. I'll let you know how they work out.
I think id leave it for now personally. Sit back and see what kind of hacks come forth before jumping. But thats just me.
Its a little pricey but it is a staple of any home arcade
Seems you know a bit about the scene. Expect it soon.
50 games is a great value imo. I have the Marvel Super Heroes cabinet and put a PC in it but those 3 games weren't going to hold me over longer than a few weeks.
Arcade1Up + Raspberry Pi + Dell LCD + Arcade Kit = Winner
I already own china arcade
Owning an MVSX
And AES + Framiester.
I can say the MVSX looks like garbage in comparison.
It’s a tidy plug and play unit, but like all emulation on LCD I was disappointed.
I agree and I think if you get this thing to put a Pi in you just wasted $500 to buy red wood and graphics lol the hack mods are where it’s at on this device. You want to put a pi in a cabinet go buy a used $100 arcade1up don’t ruin this cabinet with that nonsense. Good job bud
Dammm your arms are hairy lol
just got this played it for 1 hour stuck it back in the box and put on ebay and sold it, the thing is too small it smashes my hand , speakers distorting ,buttons suck & is a piece of shit
