Time for more SNK shenanigans with another NeoGeo unit! This time it's a bartop arcade thingy, which explains why there were no NeoGeo Arcade 1Up's...
It plays 50 different games - nearly all one-on-one fighters - but it does have Metal Slug and a golf game (although sadly not the good golf game). Plus it's big, well-built, has a great screen, a mediocre joystick, unfathomably terrible buttons, and a price tag so high you could instead get one of the new VR headsets with 2 controllers and STILL HAVE £150 LEFT OVER. I mean, really.
Anyway, it's called the SNK MVSX NeoGeo Home Arcade. At least I think it is, it has a lot of words in the name and they aren't always in that order. What a time to be alive!
#MVSX #NeoGeo #Ashens Игры
"I've seen some cheap knock offs in my time... Obviously, I'm Ashens" should become the new slogan of the channel
I like how ashens still has that Bosch screwdriver after all these years. That's an obscure ass reference but yeah
Yep I spotted it too
I'm surprised its held its charge for so long.
glad to know i wasn't the only idiot to have noticed that
Wasn't it the Ixo Vino or something equally pretentious sounding?
Wine not use it?
I can't wait to see how many... erm, less scrupulous RUclipsrs will prance about and proclaim that this is the greatest thing since the last great thing. Thanks Ashens for setting the record straight and do enjoy that Carlsberg...
edit: or Sprite, not sure either way
Waiting for Ben Heck to make it portable.
I don't get why neo geo fans aren't more outraged than Nintendo fans. Neogeo is clearly taking the piss with their fans. They overpriced cheap products for years now. That's why I'm not a neogeo fan. I bought the first wave of neogeo mini to play a few games, I knew that they were full of anti customer CEOs so I never bothered to collect for them.
That's gotta be a sprite can, there's some yellow on it. I can't help think it'd have been easier to move it and or refilm than blur the damned thing though
@@Openreality Cuz Neo Geo fans are generally a more niche group and thus tend to know a bit more and will not go for something like this. We're not stupid. Nintendo fans are people who go absolutely mental at anything whereas Neo Geo fans are mostly adults who are able to go "yeah, this isn't worth it" and then move on with their fucking life.
“It gets many things right but sadly for the money it just ain’t good enough”
I feel like that sums up pretty much all the Neo Geo stuff you have reviewed. It’s always got decent to good emulation and an ok selection of games but there’s always one thing that ruins it and the price is always too high
Classic neo geo...
Overpriced and not worth what they want
11:03 I like how Ashens looks at the camera for a reaction even though we can't see his face and no one else is there.
It's just one of those odd little tics people have, I've spent the last year doing physical comedy over voice only Discord calls
bad controls on a SNK system are weird. If there is any Games company known for no-compromise hardware, it's SNK. You bought the entire arcade board for your NeoGeo from them back in the day. that's why they were so extremely expensive. To see quality like this on any SNK machine is kinda really sad
I'm thirsty for a Sprite for some odd reason after watching this.
I’d take a blurry Sprite right now if it weren’t 2 in the morning.
Sprite... We got high on Coke! With a slice of lemon.
That confused me. Why take the time to blur the can out?
To avoid accidental product placement I guess?
@@memethanYT Yeah probably because British ad placement rules (eg when American Idol (?) was shown here, the Coca Cola cups were blurred). I don't think he'd have got done for it, but better to err on the side of caution.
Or maybe he's written personal information on it.
Here's a guess for the vertical scanlines: The emulator visual settings were designed with included options for vertically scrolling shooter games as well, which often had the built in monitor rotated 90°, so would have had vertical scanlines. The units the emulator would be used with likely wouldn't have a monitor that was mounted that way, they'd just rotate the image and not use the full screen.
No clue about the 40° option... Would that have been relevant to any cabinet design, like one that used a mirror?
I had my suspicions it was something to do with that too.
I suppose in theory that if you're building a custom-designed machine (which arcade machines are) there's no reason you couldn't control a CRT monitor in "portrait" orientation to scan at 90 degrees, so it was still "horizontal". Of course, you'd have to have the display chips output the display in that order as well. Whether there would be any benefit to that- let alone if it would be worth the hassle- and if anyone ever actually did it... I've no idea!
If- as I suspect- at least some parts were off the shelf, they might be designed to assume horizontal scanning was in use, and fiddly to make work differently or replace(??)
@@NotATube I don't think anyone would really have cared about having the scanlines going one way or another, and components for 4:3 screens accepting signals in the normal orientation would have been plentiful and mature, can't really think of a reason to try and buck that trend for the small use case of arcade cabinets (I guess possible differences in text rendering could have been a reason, if desperate enough?). If you can use the exact same components and just change the mounting of the display, I'd probably end up with the same decision.
@@NotATube And while arcade machines are always somewhat custom, there were some standards. You might know of these, but for the benefit of anyone reading through these comments later who might not: Relevant to this discussion, Japan Amusement Machine and Marketing Association came up with the JAMMA Video Standard in 1996, so with the same cabinet you could slap in any JAMMA compatible game motherboard. Haven't looked into whether JAMMA compatible vertically scrolling games were prevalent, but say you have a few cabinets specifically for vertically scrolling shmups along with the normal ones, it would be an enticing option for the arcade manager to be able to just swap out the marquee and the board to update their game selection.
You nonce
not neo geo shooters though
In case anyone is wondering about the blurred can, it's actually because of the UK's rules on product placement.
In America there are normally sponsors where you see products in the backgrounds with their logos visible, or use to drive the plot (See the Hawaii Five-o Subway scene, which I believe got banned in the UK.), over here it's against the rules to subtly promote stuff, you must make it clear if you are being sponsored by a product, which is why when American reality shows come over to the UK, you'll see T-Shirts and Coke cups blurred out almost all the time. And with UK shows, any products seen in the background are mainly turned around so that you just see labels and stuff (Although that is becoming a bit more lax here and there, if you see a faint "P" in the corner of the opening, that means there will be some product placement in the program.)
So why's Stuart blurring a Sprite Can? Because believe it or not, UK internet personalities are getting contacted by the Government for subtly promoting stuff to their audience without explicitly saying that they are paid to do so, so Staurt has taken a precaution and blurred out the Can to show that he's not doing a sponsor and that maybe he forgot to remove it
And here I thought Germany was the only country suffering from a lot of ridiculous restrictions around product placement and online advertising. Except in our case it's not the fault of the government agency that should regulate this sort of stuff, they've got some pretty clear guidelines and as long as you stick to those they won't bother you. Instead it's an organisation that claims to act on behalf of their clients (but refuses to publicly name those clients) that sends out cease and desist letters left and right to anyone who ever mentions a brand or even tags another influencer or something in their posts. And if they drag you to court and you're not exceptionally lucky you'll encounter a jury that's probably never used RUclips or Instagram and probably flips a coin.
So we commiserate with you folks.
If you've ever been to the States and seen American TV there are more adverts than any actual programs. It's pretty much unwatchable. If it plays for 25 minutes in the UK that's because in the US it has 35 minutes of advertising around it.
@@SusanIvanova2257 yeah, in the UK you have to say "ad" in your description if you're advertising stuff -- pretty simple really. But places like RUclips are becoming more and more corporatized. Now big money is there and willing to exert subtle influence, yeah you are gonna end up with weird cases like these
How come he doesn't need to blur all the Neo-Geo stuff?
“Obviously.... I’m Ashens”

You can actually buy the games on Arcade Archives for 8 bucks each. It’s quite relieving when you think about how cheap they actually are. 😂
@@TheoZaHero Oh, yeah... forgot about that.
This unit is for people who collect the 3/4 arcades, if you just wanted to play these games an emulator would be free easy choice.
Fun story: I wanted a Neo Geo MVS machine, but it's impossible to find them in Ireland, so I built my own take on it with a PC inside it etc. Designed and made it all myself out of wood, a real labour of love. Nearing the end of completion of it now (after a couple of years of working on it on and off) and this comes out. It costs about 1/4 what mine cost to build. FML
Yeah, but on the plus side, I'm assuming your one doesn't have unusably shite buttons...
@@NotATube that's true. Mine is also much bigger, like a real cabinet and it can run more than just mvs games, and with much better emulation
I wouldn't mind one :D

@@Zack_Wester that works too, I more meant just like they assume you already know it was on ashens and they're bragging about how big there product is by saying it's too big for the sofa

@@memethanYT how would you phrase that

When ASHENS says the controls are crap... Run... Run Far Away and Never Look Back
the controls are the ONLY reason to get a cabinet. without them, what's the point?
@@theghostofthomasjenkins9643 another reason is for COLLECTING, DISPLAYING and PLAYING that's the other reasons to buy them.
@@prawngravy18 Well, the controls _are_ relevant for playing the games. So if the controls are crap, you might as well build your own cabinet around an emulator. Except the primary audience for this are probably people who don't want to build their own cabinet.

I guess they added the extra buttons to cater to people that are used to non standard layouts. In Brazil arcade machines had 6 buttons as a standard, Neo Geo games had the two extra buttons remapped to repeat one of the others or a combo of the two beside it.

Ashens 2020 sounds like it would be either a cool streaming series or videogame.

Thank you for taking the time to open it up on camera. I was really curious whether or not the stick and buttons would be moddable, but it looks like they should be.
The buttons will be replacement, the joystick though, might be a pain to replace.
"Hi! this is my nice arcade console, let me show you how terrible it is"
Well obviously it's nice, but the controls are shit, and for that price, if they are buying in bulk, I'm sure Sanwa would have cut them a deal.
@@user-yv2cz8oj1k that would drive the price up for no reason, the joysticks are not bad the buttons are not bad either but people want clicky sounds. Its like a 20 dollar upgrade and 30 mins to change the buttons if bothers you that much.
I just wish it had Art of Fighting 2 and Shock Troopers 2
It should of just had all of the games for the system. I know that would take some extra licensing but come on if you're going all out like this just give us the entire library
@@RetroDrew That's about 150+ games, but it sure would be cool to see. They'd have to work out some licensing for games like Rage of the Dragons, Double Dragon (The fighting game) and Breakers, but it would have been cool.
I'm just shocked that they left out AOF2 but they had AOF 1 and 3.
The Path of the Warrior is the Art of Fighting 2 I think
They got to make an Custom Firmware for the console

as soon as he said "just want you to think about that" about the buttons, I immediately knew the ones on the MVSX are going to be crap lol
