I use towels, bedding and sometimes thick jumpers/sweatshirts for extra cushioning around breakables such as knick knacks and plates/cups etc. Also, I spread my (numerous) books across several boxes with lighter stuff on top to save mine and any movers' backs. Plus a really good marker pen to put my name and list the box contents is a must!
