The best takeaway I've gotten from this video is that the first person to actually circumnavigate the whole planet turned out to be a slave who, in the end, not only got to witness his slaver get absolutely annihilated by Lapu-Lapu, but also got to go home. God, I hope Enrique lived a happy life.
Those were actual movies. El Dorado is brilliant, only to be criminally underrated. While Pocahontas is inaccurate, that doesn't mean its not a decent love story with some great songs. Films you can actually enjoy even tho Pocahantas isnt all that devoted to the Powhatan culture. Stephen Schwartz is a total genius btw.
Looks atrocious. The Filipino outfits were not researched at all. I guess they figured one precolonial tribe of brown people looked like like any other. Also just because these were the first Europeans the Filipinos saw it doesn't mean that they were the first foreigners to the archipelago. When the Spanish arrived they noticed that the Filipinos had been trading metals, spices, pottery and other valuables from other sea trading empires like China for decades if not centuries before. And lastly Magellan died because he wanted to show off his bravado to a chief and decided to meddle in Filipino politics. His men left him to die as they watched him get massacred by Lapu Lapu's forces from the boat because by that time most of his crew was fed up with him and just wanted to go home.
@@exudeku There's the Boxer Codex which were filled with illustrations of Filipinos people and other Southeast Asian ad East Asian groups illustrated by Spanish artists. Granted there are some tangents as to how accurate they were, especially their depictions of Chinese clothes, but their artworks of Filipinos definitely shows the movie doesn't resembled them whatsoever.
as a filipino i have watched many plays that depict this particular part of our history, if i remember correctly. houses before did not have locks because we respected each other's belongings and that woman are treated equally, so when the Spaniards set fire to the houses. if i remember correctly Lapu-lapu said that they were cowards to battle at night when the enemies were sleeping and instead shouldve challenged and fought them at broad day light to show some balls.
Iirc, I read in another version, he thought to himself that they must be savages from the mountains, (like apes, might I add) doing that in the middle of the night. And then...the rest is history.
To be fair it's illegal for any western European former colonizer to get offended about anything. They're open targets, like wild pigs in Texas, you can blast any of them you feel like.
honestly, the only good thing about this film is that now I want to research about Lapu-Lapu and everything else much more in detail. I'm Spanish and we were never taught about him (i didn't even know about his existence) or anything more than 'yeah so these boats set sail and a lot of people died and then Magallan died and Elcano was the captain and went back to Spain and there were some colonization attempts and massacres and battles in between"

People conquered other people all the time in history. So why should Spaniards be ashamed of these achievements? It's not that the people of the Philippine islands were warless people dancing around fires every day. What you're doing is presentism at its finest.
I'm from Spain and I love animation, and I remember going to the cinema, I was going to watch a different movie, but there weren't empty seats. At the cinema, with my friends, we look out... Is another movie, at these time, at these place... "Elcano y Magallanes" was there. We stare at the poster, and we just say "it looks boring" "yes, and I don't think is accurate" "ice-cream?" And we left. Best decision
I was actually surprised when I found out this is about a journey to the Philippines (yeah, I don't know much about Magellan, sorry) because the native characters on the poster look like they're straight out of Road to El Dorado. I mean, most of them don't even look Philippino, they look native American.
im filipino but this one is in my reccomendation and i saw lapu lapu as the main antagonist in the movie i was confused and i dont even know who to trust
Yeah I actually know about Magellan but the design of the filipinos character made me re-think everything and doubt what I learnt about him. I had a "Oh I guess he did some things in central america or something actually" moment.
As a Filipino, This was considered as a stain in our history (in our school) because there's a LOT of things that was misleading and historically incorrect... A LOT of people died that day and it wasn't made clear enough and that outraged a lot
During that time before the westerners arrived most probably your islets are uninhabited jungles and when native people decided to live there, they are only living on their tiny bubble. Complex society formed when the Europeans arrived and gave you hispanic surnames (which you used to falsely claim you have european ancestry 🤣 but you are 101% austronesian), religion, tax system, education, alphabets, literature, sense of nationalism so that your divided archipelago and people united under one flag. as a filipino can confirmed this level of mockery would be the same as making a movie where hitler is this kind hearted joe who wants nothing more but peace and prosperity in the whole world
Additional fact: When they baptised Raja Humabon and his wife, they gave three religious gifts: the crucifix, the image of Mary, and the image of Santo Niño. This is why Santo Niño is the patron saint of Cebu and there is a festival celebrated in the introduction of the Catholic religion, called Sinulog Festival. It's the biggest religious festival in Cebu and one of the most celebrated festivals in the Philippines. It's interesting because the Philippines a well known country that is dominated with the Catholic religion to this date.
That baffled me though, if Filipino hated Spanish conquistadors so much why they embraced catholicism that much? I don't remember countries like Malaysia and Indonesia embraced Christianity that much
@@kos2919 I'm a Filipino and I'm not that sure. Though i would guess that it's because we've been a colony of Spain for 300 years and in that time it would've definitely ingrained into our culture. Also one more thing i just wanted to add, the Philippines has a hodgepodge of cultures ingrained in it because we were colonised & occupied by many different countries. But yet our culture that we are proud of today, is the result of all the different countries that had occupied the Philippines.
@@kos2919 I think that's because Indonesia and Malaysia has already had a strong inclination to Islam which were introduced by the Arab merchants before the colonization happen.
@@kos2919 The Spanish practiced Divide it impera or divide and conquer strategy in their colonial ventures. Basically they took advantage of an existing political feud between the squabbling rajahs of the region. Magellan allied with Rajah Humabon and promised to aid him in fighting Lapu-Lapu by offering their cannons, weapons and manpower. In turn the ruling elite of Cebu were encouraged to convert to catholicism to cement an alliance with the Spanish. It was a conversion motivated by both military convenience and potential political social and economic benefits. Most of the various Filipino ethnic groups however protested this and didn't passively accept conversion. Throughout the history of the island numerous ethnic and religious revolts were waged in order to revert back to the old indigenous animistic religions. These were often led by spiritual leaders called Babaylan. Some notable revolts were the Tamblot uprising of 1621 in Bohol Island, Bankaw revolt of 1621 in Leyte Island, Itneg revolt of 1621, and numerous others. The Filipino masses didn't sit idly by and violently reacted to the imposition of the colonial religion unto the people, since catholicism was associated with the new colonial encomendia order and tax collection imposed on the Natives.

I don't know if that would work, history is blood deep within us and it would be hard to depict history if the history don't match up or there's something the other party wants to hide.
As a Filipino, I would say we would be really spitting the facts and being shady all about the *shit* we’ve experienced for 333 years with all that injustice, abusiveness, slavery, racism we have experience that without a doubt they have sugarcoated.
I like how most of that eras travel stories are like, “I was travelling around the world and I thought I was going the right way... but we got lost... I think? There were natives... we didn’t know what to do about it. So we tried to bully them until they realised they had more people than our voyage crew.”
I know that SaberSpark mainly reviews movies but the way he did that condensed history recap was really entertaining. I would honestly like to hear him narrate more history if he were up to it.
I (Spaniard) convinced my best friend (Filipina) to watch this movie together, we were both outraged but still had a good laugh. If this wreck of a movie didn't destroy our friendship, then nothing will.
In some weird way, maybe some of the animators and directors for this movie intended for some cross dialogue between two separate cultures to come about. It’s just…the way that’s panned out maybe wasn’t exactly how they intended. Oh, there’s gonna be a cross cultural dialogue about this movie alright.
As a filipino, living in the philippines my whole life and having our history taught to us from a very young age(first grade) this movie made me go like "wtf"
Magellan's voyage was the only time Filipinos were truly recognized internationally, since it depicted the death of the one who led the voyage. The only time we were almost close to that same recognition was Manuel L. Quezon's acts in the world wars. It's shit how we're being portrayed yes.
Filipino media have done a lot worst tarnishing our nation's reputation than any foreign country. Have you seen the formulaic telenovelas being shat out yearly?
Usually, I don’t like social studies class. However, if it was taught in the way Saber showed this, I would be way more interested. It was so neat hearing the true story about this, I had a lot of fun listening and learning more :D
For the record, the Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican clergy that accompanied the Conquistadors were VERY vocally upset at the subhuman treatment of natives (there are letters of correspondence between them and the Vatican that go in depth about the matter) but since the church began to back out of politics during the renaissance they couldn't do much since the expeditions were commissioned by the crown. On one hand people could get pissed that the church didn't do more in spite of this, and on the other people would complain about violating the separation of church and state. It's a lose lose situation, but the church saw Evangelism as the more worthwhile pursuit in the long run. They genuinely wanted to spread the faith, not conversion under threat of violence. As such, unlike the conquistadors, the clergy STAYED in the colonies rather than coming back to Spain once they "got their spoils". In fact, that's not only a major factor that led not only to Catholicism being dominant in Hispanic countries, but also contributed to Spanish becoming the dominant language. After all, you can't teach the faith if they don't know what's being said or written. Likewise, there are a ton of Hispanic, Latino, and Mixed-Race Saints from said nations shortly afterwards who were readily canonized regardless of race or ethnic background.
@@warbossgegguz679 in long term it's still doesn't bring good to the Christianity as a whole though. Younger generations saw what colonialists did to their ancestors and shy away from Christianity. That's also contributed to the raise of atheism in current era
This is why the show Roots still holds it's own as an accurate retelling of historical events. They don't try to cover up any of the brutal gruesome stuff for the sake of "family friendly". They don't paint the colonisers as the good guys. They start off the show with Kunta-Kinte in HIS home, because it's HIS story, and HE'S the hero of the story!
The best part about el dorado is that all the white people who watch it with me, the Kiche Mayan, apologize for the colonization of my ancestors. It’s fun to prey on my friends white guilt, only my friends though
Just dropping my thoughts and criticism as a Filipino over here. The girl was a babaylan. So she's not just a girl that comes out of nowhere in the 3rd act of the film. She's an important character in pre-historic Philippines. Babaylans are the "messenger" to the spirits because in prehistoric Philippines, they believe in nature spirits and deities. So a babaylan sailing to Spain because of a man is very disrespectful on their move. Babaylans are very important to a tribe. Please for anyone who will be doing historic films, do proper research. And also regarding Lapu-Lapu looking like a villain is very bad thing on their part. They invaded our homeland and Lapu-Lapu and the tribe was only trying to protect the Philippines. Before these colonizers came we have our own culture and women were not looked down upon. Now look what they did? They destroyed a country's diverse culture, art and history because of gold and spices and more territory to flex to other countries. Edit: Since this has gone (sort of) got a lot of likes, I hope this can be a conversation starter for people to talk about while being respectful to culture, history, and the communities involved.
And Magellan wasn't even just invading, he was trying to impress the other tribe which was essentially Lapu-Lapu's enemy and flex on him, Lapu-Lapu had every right to attack back lmfao
It only gets worse when you discover that one of the insults Spaniards said to the Portuguese during the rule of the Habsburgs was "marrano" (a Jew recently converted to Christianity). I highly doubt the guionists and animators knew this, but still, yikes.

Honestly, some people might say that us Filipinos are being exaggerated to our outrage, but one can't help but be angry when the hero that fought for our country be portrayed this way. Not saying that Filipinos were the only one colonized, but I'm sure many will sympathise if their own heroes come off as a villain. And as a quote that I remember, in different perspectives of the victim and the attacker, you can either be the villain or the hero. This is not a film about the Philippines, but about the first circumnavigation of the world. The Philippines appears like 10 minutes max. You are outraged by actually depicting your nationalist myths about Lapu Lapu killing Magallanes.
@@goodaimshield1115Did you even watch the video? No matter how accurate or inaccurate this movie was, it’s still a blatant misrepresentation of reality sprinkled with racism
he was a hero that fought for your country as much as spainiards were heroes that fought for europe during the arab invasion or aztecs were heroes that fought for america, maybe even worse. Lapu lapu fought for himself because the spanish demanded he submit to his ally Rajah Humabon, who probably converted to christianism and allied with them precisely for that, he and the battle of mactan are stupdly romanticized. It was all a minor conflict that ultimately didn't change much since spain got most of the archipelago relatively fast anyway. Like even saying "your people" is colonialist since at the time the philiphines was super disunited with dozens of languages and tribes and like 5 main religions, you were maybe even more diverse than the whole of europe. "Your people" is a concept that exists precisely because of the spanish colonization who united the isles, if it weren't for that you would be 12+ diferent countries. Correct me if I'm wrong but you couldn't even agree to wich name the philiphines should be changed because diferent langauges and ethincs had diferent views that were interpreted as racist by the others and just left it, that's how diferent you were a few decades ago after being united for centuries imagine if no colonization happened. If you want a "hero that fought for your country" you should look at the people that fought for the independence against USA, japan and to a lesser point spain(to a lesser point because spain didn't put much of a fight since usa crushed them) not a local tribal cheiftain and warlord who managed to win a minor battle against an european expedition that had like 30 times less people than his army.
Historically accurate version: Magellan lands at Cebu and asks where the windows are. He then hands out toothbrushes and accuses Lapu-Lapu of asking him for money. He is driven out and dies in the West Indies of an unspecified accident involving mayonnaise.
"Look at this angry, grumpy Phillipino stereotype! He's the villain of the movie!! Wait, you're saying that's really historically insensitive? Um, okay... then... looks at this angry, grumpy _Portuguese_ stereotype instead!! *He's* the real villain now!!!"
I mean, in this situation it's because Magellan was the one who arrived in the Philippines, it was their land so smh Quoting the video "hey Philippines, remember when we landed on your country and enslaved y'all for 333 years? Here's a movie about it, YEA SPAIN RULES"
KougaTintinFan Yeah. At least with Road to El Dorado, we weren’t following the story of historical characters (I mean, Cortés is in the movie, but we don’t really get to see any of his ventures, he’s just a story device for our main characters). Miguel and Tulio are completely made up, and it just so happens that the story takes place in colonial times, that’s it. It’s hard to adapt the lives of these colonizers in a kid’s movie because then you have to sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of censorship, and nobody wants that.

I'm so tired of this Pocahontas/Sacagawea trope in movies where an indigenous/native girl shows up whose only purpose is to guide the colonizers and be a love interest to one of them. Also she always has to leave her home because of course she would leave her home to go off with some random dudes instead of stay with her "savage" family.
I know! How terrible that one of the natives is curious, inquisitive, and wants to explore more of the world that these newcomers have just demonstrated existed! Native people should never want anything more than to live and die in the same village their ancestors did.
I want a story where a dude whose like an impressed sailor or indentured servant (basically kinds of temporary slavery) comes to some new land and just decids fuck it. Boy meets girl, boy realizes he loves girl more than he loves Jesus, boy defects and helps the natives kick out the other Europeans out in return for being able to stay. It might not be super historically accurate, but it think it'd make for an interesting story. Give us a grungier view of the Europeans before they even interact with the natives. Show that the life of many people in europe sucked. I mean a lot of people came to the new world looking for a better life, free from oppressive European society. And show us more of the natives and their culture. Give us more indigenous food and religion. Have some situation where the defector is being taught how to do stuff by the natives. I mean there was at least one entire english colony that straight up joined a local tribe. So it's not too far fetched.

While Filipino people have already spoken out about the movie better than I ever could, as a Spaniard I want to also make a quick note that Spanish media has had its fair share of problems dealing with our colonial legacy. A movie about the 1898 war between Spain and the US for control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba was released a few years ago and got criticized for apparently portraying our country as weak. A lot of times, criticism of Spanish colonization and the Spanish empire is dismissed as a leyenda negra, AKA a lie that the British spread because they wanted to make us look bad while excusing their own colonization. Both empires were shit, but Spain in general still can’t wrap their head around its past, both concerning colonization and events like the civil war and posterior dictatorship.

The Spanish colonization basically stipped the Filipinos of their pre-colonial identity. I was researching the history of poetry and drama/musicals in my city in the Visayas region only to find out how most of the pre-colonial documents were burned by the Spanish.

Edit: Since this has gone (sort of) got a lot of likes, I hope this can be a conversation starter for people to talk about while being respectful to culture, history, and the communities involved.

he was a hero that fought for your country as much as spainiards were heroes that fought for europe during the arab invasion or aztecs were heroes that fought for america, maybe even worse.

Literally what I thought before I saw this comment 😭😂

COMMENTS ON THE VIDEO, I, A FILIPINO, WANT YOU TO READ:
1) 0:50 We did have guns, we were literally next to the Country that invented it, We have something called the Lantaka and the Arquebus that was invented by the Majapahit Empire during our 400 year long war with at least 3 dynasties in China
2) 9:37 A Captain of one of his fleet of ships called Juan de Cartagena who was the illegitimate child of an archbishop, thats where he got his position, so you see the smegol look lmao
3) 13:00 Sidenote, the reason why Lapu-Lapu was pissed off by the Spaniards was because they interrupted his wedding. The Rajah on the other Island was already his enemy but shit hits the fan when your tank tries to carry.
4) 13:50 another thing, that girl is most likely the Islands Queen, the Mother of Sinulog herself, Reyna Juana who, not shown in the movie, was Christian and really pro-Spaniard
5) Another thing that isn't seen in the Film is that they incited a fight with Lapu-Lapu by BURNING DOWN THEIR HOUSES, They didn't even land when the battle begun, They shot them with guns that were obviously not snipers again because WE HAD GUNS. Because of Coral reefs they couldn't land properly and using small boats would mean certain death because the natives were already on the beach
6) 14:26 One problem that I have with the East indies arrival scene is that, 6.1 Indies has 6 seasons, 6.2 from March( 16, 1521 when Magellan arrived) to July that would be Summer meaning there shouldn't be any storms in the South Ocean and 6.3 Elcano went the other way when coming back to Spain and his ship was jacked.
7) 21:18 They didn't land directly on Cebu, the first Mass was on a completely different Island. 2 WE HAD GUNS
8) 21:27 They didn't have a blood compact, that happened years later with Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and the leader of the island where I lived, Sikatuna.
9) 29:20 There were Hypercuts made to the movie because the studio actually edited it to be less offensive according to the producers. The amount of hypercuts in the movie just shows how much shit there is.
10) 33:07 Lapu-Lapu's nuts are hanging which is a problem since we wore g-strings, not skirts, Also WE HAD ARMOR, it was bamboo breastplates with a circular Iron piece in the Middle
kudos for writing these all down, very informative too

As a Filipino history lover, this is historically inaccurate:
1) no spy guy from portugese
2) since ottoman blocked the main route for trading, magellan wants to work for portugese but portugese declined and magellan was forced to ask spain for assistance
3) they didnt blow up their ship. I think its because someone poisoned the whole crew (not sure about this one)
4) there was no portugese vs spain action
Sorry if i there is some false information, i forgot some of it because i havent studied the philippine history for years now. Also, sorry if my grammar is not correct (English is my 2nd language).
There was a little portuguese vs Spanish action.
One of the ships that got lost was captured by the portuguese and their crew was arrested.

The spaniards are the true villains .. the natives are living peacefully that time, and they arrive and claimed that the whole archipelago is theirs.
Well by peacefully, there were still a few tribe battles here and there.
@Michelle Still not living peacefully. Believe it or not, native people were capable of violence and warfare.
Belief in the noble savage is pretty cringe.
a yes the classic a few dozen chad europeans subdued millions of pacifist natives that never did anything bad and also were a single unit and not dozens of diferent cultures that waged war and tradeed with each other. It's not like lapu lapu had a known rivalry with the spanish allied Rajah Humabon and that was the reason of the battle that killed magallanes.
dont be so clueless.. im filipino and i know our pre-colonial history. philippines was far from peaceful with lots of wars and battles between datus, sultans, etc.
Wars always existed everywhere
I'm so tired of this Pocahontas/Sacagawea trope in movies where an indigenous/native girl shows up whose only purpose is to guide the colonizers and be a love interest to one of them. Also she always has to leave her home because of course she would leave her home to go off with some random dudes instead of stay with her "savage" family.
@Ophelia Tepes they were raped and killed, stop being so delusional
I mean ya that’s how it goes

Yeah. Lapu Lapu wasn't even a villain at this point. He's just protecting his country since the time Spaniards had been colonized Philippines for 333 years.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 He attacked Magellan because he refused to give tribute. Why would he give tribute to a king he didn't knew? The Philippines as a state and political entity did not exist until the beginning of the Spanish period.
@@mmyr8ado.360 And the reason why Spaniard colonized the Philippines is because they wanted to seek some silver and gold as a treasure. Also, Spain established the country with Evangelism and Christianity. This is where things have changed when the Americans came to educate the Filipinos and civilized them. The Spanish colonization basically stipped the Filipinos of their pre-colonial identity. I was researching the history of poetry and drama/musicals in my city in the Visayas region only to find out how most of the pre-colonial documents were burned by the Spanish. We're the only South East Asian country that doesn't use their own alphabet at present because the one we had was eradicated by our colonizers. They literally erased our identity yet have the audacity to paint themselves the heroes.
