Sometimes I think about going to watch these kind of films in the cinema just so that the artists get some acknowledgement from their audience. There poor people work so hard and really love their movies. Heck, animation is hard and it must suck when everyone makes fun of something you've poured your heart into.
I always feel bad for the people that are actually passionate about their art but it still ends up failing, whether the actual art is good or not. I guess it just hits a little too close to home.
That guy who wanted to see if anyone would come to the theaters to watch Delgo, I respect him. He saw one family enjoy the movie and, to him, that was a victory no matter how small. Maybe if things were different, he would've had an animation masterpiece on his hands.
The director of this film was one of my teachers at film school. He's an eccentric guy, and he was very proud of this film. While this movie gets goofed on a lot (rightfully so), it stands apart from most other poorly-made CGI films. This was the first CGI film made outside of the studio model, meaning the size of this team and the resources they had was absolutely tiny compared to their competitors. Most people said an out-of-studio CGI movie was impossible to make. This director proved them wrong - only problem was that the movie sucks. I think the director would admit the movie's flaws, but he was still very proud of what he accomplished.
"Animation is a median, not a genre, and it's not specifically for kids.". Great quote, if only everyone understood this, we would definitely have a better appreciation for animated films and live films as a whole.
@@emperorfaiz I think the problem is in the West if you can park a kid in front of something and it shuts them up, it makes it "for kids". Animated shows/films and video games are examples of this mentality.

Maybe it could be about a world with cute cartoony characters but a virus known to them as Uncanny Valley starts infecting and turning them into zombies of some sort. Then the 4 main characters set out to find a cure but are faced with trials along the way, (hordes of infected Uncanny Valley dudes and predatory monsters) and maybe one of them falls victim to the virus and has to be killed. Then yada yada yada they find the place where the ingredients that could make a cure are kept, they create a cure, and then boom everyone who isn't dead is happy.

This movie came out when I was in my mid-teens, and I remember me and my Mom seeing a poster for it when we went to the Theater one day. She stopped to stare at it and said it's title in a tone of voice I can best describe as a combination of confusion and disgust. And then we kept walking.
After seeing the concept art it seems like the movies designs would honestly have worked better if it was traditional animation... not great but better
Hey dude my teacher wrote and directed this movie. I have a signed Delgo poster to top it off. This was his first film and he made it fresh out of college and didn’t know what he was doing at all. He was given so much funding despite no experience. The movie ended up blacklisting him from a career in filmmaking, when that’s what he wanted to do. He teaches story at college now and tries to inspire kids by being clear about his mistakes and the circumstances that brought him there. He’s very loved by his students and really isn’t a bad guy. I love film roast videos but I just wanted to be clear about this guys character for people to see in the comments section so no one starts attacking the guy. EDIT: Hey ya’ll slight update!! I am working in Accounting for Disney now! its pretty awesome! FSU Film is a great program and Jason is a fantastic mentor. I wrote this comment back in college and it still stands today. Thats all for now!

They didn't do a decent job, though. They got good voice actors, but didn't give them good facilities . They put a 70-something Anne Bancroft in a recording booth the size of a phone booth in an area where you could hear the sound of toilets, while she was also suffering from cancer (a fact they most likely didn't know, but still.)
Honestly, this could've been good. It's a shame. :( And the part about "just because you have passion doesn't mean the project you work on will be good" is a hard truth. This video was great though.
@@donnyshields4450 You need discipline and skill. Discipline will teach you how to work and get through the pressure of working, especially for such projects, and skill is necessary if you want to do something that will be worth looking into. It's a bit similar to the argument people that whine about cooking shows rejecting people with passion have. Just because you have passion for cooking, it doesn't mean you have the required skill and the discipline that will help you get through the (honestly sometimes crippling) pressure of working in an actual kitchen. The same goes with movies.
@@bigshrekhorner You also need a group of honest friends who aren't afraid to tell you you suck at something instead of tacitly praising it "Yeah man... it's, interesting! I think if you work hard on it it could be good." Having someone genuinely tell you that your idea sucks before devoting serious time in it can save you years of your life.
I remember seeing trailers of this as a kid and begging my parents to get it, only for them to tell me, "No. Absolutely not." I was so mad back then, but I can now thank them in hindsight.
The fact that the writers had so much hope and passion for the story already planning two other movies and it just.. flopped. I know people that have stories they’ve been working for years and are really passionate about it, building the world immensely, and seeing something like this, I hope they can take notes. Yes, you have an idea with a huge world to build on, but you have to organize it correctly, keep the world building brief BUT interesting, and make characters interesting.
I think part of why this line of thinking persists is how people never want to be mean. Like they sing countless praises because they wanted to be one of the supporters of something big. But because they fear negativity so much, they never offer legit criticisms which is exactly what art relies on. It's like with Lion King remake and how there were concerns with how the live cgi was executed. But people defensively talked about how people worked hard or that just the lion king name is good enough. Good intentions does not guarantee a good quality creation.
It's why you need to be careful and test your products before you go whole hog. Start with an animatic, maybe make an 11 minute short, make a Direct to DVD movie and THEN go for the gusto with the major motion film.
@@pluna3382 Thing is even if you ask for criticism on your work, you aren't guaranteed to get it if any. That's something I sadly go through as someone who is trying to make a comic and hopefully see it on screen someday.
...based on what?? This was destined for BullshitLand no matter when it came out. It would barely even make a dent in the straight-to-DVD market, nonetheless giving this a major wide release.
I agree with the ending... I'm trying to write sometihng of a simular tone and I had to drop so many characters and ideas because the plot itself was to bloated. Piece of advice; IT'S OKAY TO DROP IDEAS WHEN THEY DON'T WORK.
The Flaine ...I have to say, though, even despite its bottlenecked release (only one theater, and even then just to satisfy the law before marketing overseas), that is some incredible levels of failure even by that standard. And apparently 10 of that $30 was *refunded,* on top of that. You'd think more people would have seen it by *accident* than that, even...
The history was kinda sad, everyone loved to do it but then life came and said: No no no no! Your movie, the years you spent on it, the money, everything, everything is going to the trash now because yes :).
The voice actors were mostly good, except the main ones. You have Val Kilmer, Anne Bancroft, Burt Reynolds, Malcolm McDowell, all actors who have already proven their talents and had decades of work behind them when they worked on this. But the issue was with the actor playing Delgo and his sidekick.
It’s sad what happened to this movie. It spend nearly a decade in production and the people behind it had so much faith in it, only for it to become one of the biggest flops in animation and everyone hated it, and now nobody remembers it.
I feel like this movie (along with Strange Magic) was just a great idea that just unfortunately suffered from bad execution. So much potential for a masterpiece flushed down the drain which is such a shame really because I would love to see more mature, action-oriented animated movies (that are not from Japan) get wide theatrical releases. 😞Oh well. At least, ever since the failures of Delgo and Strange Magic, we got Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse which was a big financial and critical success and we are getting a sequel to that movie in 2022 though. 😊
Oh! There's also a movie on Amazon Prime (maybe, I forget if I saw it there or not) called "Pixie Dragons" relaxed in 2018 that looks like a absolute train wreck. It looks like it was animated on SFM (even some SFM animations on youtube look better, though) and it's description is just garble aimed at brainless parents. Edit: forgot to mention that their designs are straight up ripping off those popular clay dragon figures.
Oh man I just googled the one you were talking about and I think yours would be much more interesting, plus they're anthro so they would be right up his ally to review. The marketing killed any chance this movie had. "Delgo." "Delgo!" "Delgo?" "Delgo..." TELL ME WHAT THE MOVIE IS ABOUT! Give me a synopsis and quick flashes of interesting scenes!
I remember this movie only because I “lost” it at my Christian preschool. And my dad got really sad because he hadn’t had a chance to watch it. I felt really bad and I made all of the teachers search the whole school for it. We never saw it again. So... do with that what you will.

You know what bothers me about this? The whole theme of the movie is that 'racism is bad mmmkay' but did anyone notice how the Orcs are shows as complete idiots and wind up being a 3rd party dragged into this only to serve as pawns for the bad guy? The fairy people and the turtle people are shown to have positive attributes about them with the fairy people just being ignorant due to being led by Bad Mom/Aunt and the turtle people being too passive. The trolls/orcs/whatever are complete idiots and jokes who only serve as canon fodder for the bad guy. Yet this movie wants to teach the lesson of not looking down on other people if they are not of the same ethnicity as you. And if anything, the Orcs are in the worse position than the turtle people since they seem to have an even shittier way of life with no powers outside of their brute strength and both sides look down on them. The Orcs are the true heroes of this stupid movie. EDIT: 29:20 why are there BUTTPLUGS ON THE WALL?!?
That happens when you want to tell a premise, not because you wholeheartedly believe in it, but more because it's almost a step by step formula. Just like environment or corruption; you need to repeat the same old speeches and the same old situations with the same old characters to deliver a message that almost everybody agrees with. That way, you not only have an instant template from which you can build a plot over, but also it shows you're a really D E E P and W O K E artist, who is aware of today's problems and is up to solve them in it's own ways, because you're such a good boy. I mean, there's nothing wrong with wanting to deliver an actual message in an artistic way, but when it's done with actual dedication, knowledge and concern about the topic, and not because of what I've wrote before, *it shows up.*
I’ll say one thing, I like the wings on the fairy people. They look both alien-bug like and fantasy person like. I also like how they’re not static when they aren’t flying, they bounce a little when they walk and they flutter and stretch them sometimes when they talk and move.
There is a film on netflix called "Iron Sky: the coming race." All I will say is... there are moon nazis. and boy, there's more. There is also another thing called guru aur bhole. its a show, not a movie, but boy is it weird! edid: apparently there is a prequel that I haven't watched yet.
I do remember seeing a dvd trailer for this movie, deep in the recesses of my childhood. Glad to know it wasn't in fact a fever dream induced hallucination.
This gives me an useful tip for character designing: Stay as far as you can from the uncanny valley. And story writing advice too: Don’t over rely on tropes and cliches. Try and add something special to them.
I think the uncanny valley can be used if you're designing something *intentionally* horrifying. Ghost in a shell, the villains in courage the cowardly dog and the aragami from God Eater are good examples.

I'm writing a book right now and I absolutely love it! It's my first book idea that isn't a shameless ripoff of a movie I like lol. I've been working on it for almost a year and my mind tends to wander there any chance it gets. I've shown it to my friends and they like it, too! I even ask them if there's anything in the story I need to change. I have a lot of passion for this book and seeing how much the Delgo team cared for their movie kinda scares me. Delgo's comic relief sidekick, Annoying Turtle Man reminds me of Barack Obama from rtgame's playthrough of Miitopia. I think it's the lankiness paired with the hat.
This movie actually reminded me of my own creative writing process toward a novel I was working on. About 12 years ago, I had a concept for a story stuck in my head, so I started writing notes and then decided to just write it. I didn’t really plan how I was going to write it, I just sort of kept adding...and adding...and adding...and before I knew it, I was at 400 pages in Microsoft Word...single spaced. Then, I went through editing...oh God. It was such an awful process because I realized through the editing process that I REALLY made the plot overly complicated and didn’t focus enough on character development, especially with two of the three main characters. I realized that one of them I did a pretty good job, but the other two lacked any sort of development. It was so bad, I essentially started a re-write project that even 12 years later, still haven’t completed (mostly because I’m in a career field where I’m working almost non-stop). Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is it seems like the creators had the exact opposite epiphany I had. It seems like they had this grand idea for the lore and decided to just keep building to it when in all actuality, they should have been simplifying it. In the little free time I have, I watch anime...and if I had to throw one out there that suffers from this problem, I’d nominate Fairy Gone. An OVERLY complicated plot with zero character development where everything so oddly named that episode to episode, I forgot main character names and affiliations. As for the animation, yeah, it’s ugly...but honestly, I’ve seen uglier. I think one of the things that probably hurt it in regards to box office success? Marketing. I’ll be honest, I’ve never even heard of this movie. Here’s the shitkicker...you mentioned Oogieloves in regards to levels of box office failure...but I’ve at least heard of Oogieloves. I swear to God, I’ve never heard of this movie before this review and I was still going to see animated movies in theaters in 2008. Not only that, I am a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy epics...this movie would’ve been right up my alley...so how the hell have I never heard of this movie unless it just had an atrocious marketing campaign (or lack there of) that didn’t get this movie’s name out there. Don’t get me wrong, after seeing this review, I’m glad the marketing for it was shit and it didn’t draw me in to see it. I’m most alluding to the fact that if this movie had any sort of semblance of a marketing team behind it, I probably go see it in theaters.
For a second I thought I was reading my own comment for a second there! I'm currently re-working an eleven year old project and I think if you work on something for so long (even inconsistently like I have) you should come to a realization at some point that your project is a mess. This movie took ten years to make, and it's kind of sad that it seems like no one ever said anything during that time about how nonsensical and hard to follow this movie might be.
@@pikapower_kirby Well, I’d say the biggest snag I had was lack of time. Writing was always a side project for me while working full-time and in the last six years especially, I’m in a career where I work a lot of 60-70 hour weeks. It’s just hard to make a commitment to editing and organizing when you don’t have the time to commit to it. Of course, I will agree that the project did start out as a mess because I had never written a story as long as this one. I’ve written short stories and poems before, but never a full-blown novel, so it was certainly a learning experience, to say the least.
@@Toucanbird I completely hear that, and I'd say its perfectly understandable! In the case of Delgo though, it was a professional team working for a decade and somehow it never occurred to them to double-check and make sure everything made sense? In the case of writers like you and me who have other responsibilities and who aren't necessarily professional, the fact that things may go off the rails or not make sense initially is understandable.
I might on the verge of something like that myself. I've got so many ideas for my fictional universe that I know would make a great story, but I hardly even worked on one yet. God, I really need to get to that. I mean I'm trying to connect mythologies from ancient Greece, Egypt, and Nordic for God's sake!
I find it kind of ironic that the two voice actors that died passed away at around the same time, as if they both made a deal to die exactly in 2005 to avoid dealing with the backlash that came with the movie’s reception.
I can hardly remember certain things from the late 2000's but if I see a photo from my photobooks, everything comes back to me. So I don't remember this movie being in theaters in 2008. I was a seven year old child and what I can remember was having a Hello Kitty themed birthday party.
I threw myself 100% into this video. I really wanted to have fun with the edits and go to town on the topic since it's so bizarre. Enjoy!

Now I’m trying to imagine that voice in my mind.

1) Better animation
2) Less uncanney designs

@radf yes

Me: "just wondering what is happening to the bad guy's wings"
I actually have vague memories of seeing this, so I can answer that! She got her wings cut off when she was banished, and she’s wearing decorative prosthetics for the rest of the movie. That’s why she was killed by a fall- her fake wings didn’t let her fly.

I kind of feel bad for the creators. They were excited about this and really tried, but it didn't work or translate well.
*Thanos voice* reality is often disappointing
Felt the same for the creator of Joshua and the Promiseland.
3 years by himself.
Yeah I honestly agree.
These characters look like the creepy halfway point in an animorphs cover.
I was thinking Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes but in 90's PS1 cut-scene Animation with a Ferngully esque plotline.
No it's the non fantasy animorphic reality version.
Honestly, this could've been good. It's a shame. :(
And the part about "just because you have passion doesn't mean the project you work on will be good" is a hard truth. This video was great though.
I agree, like you need careful directions.
What else do you have to do to make it good?
@@donnyshields4450 You need discipline and skill. Discipline will teach you how to work and get through the pressure of working, especially for such projects, and skill is necessary if you want to do something that will be worth looking into.
It's a bit similar to the argument people that whine about cooking shows rejecting people with passion have. Just because you have passion for cooking, it doesn't mean you have the required skill and the discipline that will help you get through the (honestly sometimes crippling) pressure of working in an actual kitchen. The same goes with movies.
yeah, at the very least, it could have become a cult classic.

Why do I find you in every comments section
Didn't Arctic Dogs beat that record?
Meg Griffin I don’t think so
The fact that the writers had so much hope and passion for the story already planning two other movies and it just..

Good point. Also well spotted on the buttplugs, I never noticed that.

I think the uncanny valley can be used if you're designing something *intentionally* horrifying. Ghost in a shell, the villains in courage the cowardly dog and the aragami from God Eater are good examples.
And try doing something original
@@Khalickey Important point: Making your cast entirely non-human for no good reason does not count as "original"

I actually loved this movie growing up lmao. My parents HATED it and I feel bad for the sheer number of times I made them watch it
I think most of us had a _Delgo_ of our own. Or several that we watched on a rotation. Mine was episodes of _Care Bears_ taped off TV.

Mine was probably gumbi. Its seriously great seeing all the crazy shit saber finds. I wouldve never found this on my own lol :)
For me it was that weird dinosaur one. Where one character was like yee or whatever haha. Watched that nonstop as a kid, now seeing it, yikes

I don't want to end up in a situation where I'm waiting to see if people like my story and no one even cares enough to show up. That is my greatest fear as a writer.
Oof I feel ya. It's always rough if your work is rejected.
But best suggestion is - do the best you can. But always accept you are learning and getting better. So even if one project didn't pan out - there's always another day.
Yeah as an artist and a writer that's also my worst fear 😭😭😭
NGL this movie's "uncanny valley" didn't bother me in the slightest other than the fairy ears.
The "comedy" guy makes me think of Jar Jar Binks.
That's funny. When I saw this I actually thought the dynamic was supposed to be more Jak and Daxter...but didn't quite hit the mark.
Only difference is that: jar jar is better
Honestly, even Jar Jar is funnier then Filo (the annoying turtle man )
I think you watched this movie too young and something got fucked in your head. Now your ability to see what's ugly and what isn't is compromised...

Same here, as well. I remember seeing trailers for this at my theater and actually saw it. Some of the visual aesthetics was what drew me in, as I was a little desperate to see such ideas for fantasy worlds on the big screen.
I am happy to know I am not the only who does this.
Yiiikee
I can hardly remember certain things from the late 2000's but if I see a photo from my photobooks, everything comes back to me. So I don't remember this movie being in theaters in 2008. I was a seven year old child and what I can remember was having a Hello Kitty themed birthday party.
