Can A Rollover Trigger Low Oil Pressure In A Jeep 4.0? Let's Investigate!

  • Just on a hunt for a good used engine, I run into the story that this was a rollover/wrecked Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jeep looked a little rougher than the average wreck, but who knows. Before I pulled the engine the oil pressure dropped down to nearly 5psi. Without just doing a full rebuild I go through steps seeing what helps get the pressure back up. Just a video for learning on mine and your end, hope you enjoy!!

Oil pump pickup tube. My rock crawler even with a skid plate over the sump had a big rock push in sump part of the pan. didn't realize how bad it was because the skid plate flexed back but the pan underneath was dented at least an inch. pulled the pan, the pickup tube where it's press fit into pump was loose. (Sucking air randomly while on the trail gave erratic oil pressure)

Yeah your motor was hemorrhaging. AKA bypassing back into the pan b4 it goes thru the whole motor.

Damn great video! Years ago I dropped my XJ off at a "buddies" shop to install a rear main seal. I was going TDY so I wasnt able to do it myself, I dropped it off with all the parts. About a month later while I was still gone I gave him a call to check on it, he then talked me into replacing the oil pump. "Since it the pan was already off" a original engine with 100k that got great oil pressure. I got back picked it up, drove it home next day started it up got about 5 miles lost all oil pressure on hwy. The replacement short block was like that one.... low oil pressure. Now the engine did hold together and ran until the transmission gave up over 5 years later.
Unfortunately he had a s### head working for him, doing shoddy job. He was a good guy but was having some hard times and was dependent on his employees at the time. His mechanics did hurt his reputation and business before he passed.

I ran into the same low oil pressure symptoms shown here. I had a piston skirt break and did new pistons and new rod bearings. Checked all clearances and rod bearings were at .002” mains were at .002”-.003”. My old oil pressure sender was faulty so I replaced it while doing all this. After I got it back together at cold start it had 50 psi of oil pressure, once warmed up it dropped to 10 psi at idle and would build 30 psi driving around. Tore it apart again and found the cam bearings were all worn. Must have had lower oil pressure the whole time but realize it due to the old faulty sending unit.

Cam bearing clearance is tough to read but I think your brother has the indicator that can do it. Y don’t u change the oil bypass spring inside the oil pump, that little spring is what controls the pressure in the pump. Stronger spring = higher pressure, old worn out spring = low pressure…worn out spring lets the oil bypass before building pressure. This is not just a 4.0 thing it’s common in a lot of motors excpecially old small block chevies…
