  • Fare evasion appears to be an issue at the north entrance of Sheppard West Station with gate-hoppers sneaking through open doors, forcing their way through and in some cases preventing the gates from closing.

      Good call, but I think you got it backwards. The sign was likely there or nearby and he picked it up before jumping. So both holding the no trespassing sign and trespassing itself are not contradictory actions.

    Such a easy fix but hire security guards to be present at all stations. All ttc wants to do is make cuts.

    Montréal (STM) adult metropass: 88$
    Toronto (TTC) adult metropass: 156$
    I understand the 20 million $ loss on fare evasion as an affect on that but lower the cost and maybe there’ll be less fare evasions.

    The real fare evasion occurs in the suburbs where adults are using presto cards programmed by students/seniors they know or a post secondary metropass (discounted) to hop on buses where there are no fare inspectors.

    Most notobly the risk of fare evasion is going to be a bigger concern now that the TTC is demolishing the floor-to-ceiling revolving turnstiles at all the remaining automatic/secondary entrances (which are not overseen directly by the fare collector) and is replacing them with the newer and shorter waist-high glass-paddle fare gate design (like the one seen here at the Sheppard West station), which will be at all TTC subway stations and entrances by mid-2018 (regardless if they are supervised or not) as part of the rollout of the PRESTO card system.

    • @Sam19509
      @Sam19509 6 лет назад +1

      Citynews did a video earlier I think in the spring where people were showing how to open those fare gates by extending their umbrella. And many of these places do not have security cameras or personnel so people feel comfortable tricking the gate into giving them free admission. Presto is one of the best displays where the adaptation of technology is going to cost the system money going forward it isn't just front loaded cost overruns on implementation.

    As everyone who rides the system undoubtedly knows, the TTC is reinstalling the gates altogether to pave way for widespread PRESTO use, they are removing/demolishing the turnstiles at main entrances and the big floor-to-ceiling revolving turnstiles at the automated entrances (the ones that are not directly overseen by the TTC fare collector) and replacing them with the new glass paddle door fare gates design (like the one seen here at the Sheppard West station), which will be in place in all TTC subway station entrances in 2018.

    • @Sam19509

      Presto is the liberals 4th biggest scandal behind ehealth, ornge and gas plants. They claimed it would be a regional integrated fare system but the costs are greatly outweighing the rewards. The tokens and cash system was fine. All they should have done was introduce some type of reader technology that lets you pay with debit/credit cards to ride the bus as well as authenticate chips in-bedded in metropasses going forward. The ttc keeps claiming ridership is declining but I have been taking the ttc for more than 20 years to work and for leisure activities downtown and I can tell you the ridership has greatly increased. The TTC is reporting lower ridership due to massive fare evasion. And I think they only report the adult ridership figures - not seniors and students whose presto cards and metropasses are being abused by adults. Add to this kids also ride for free.

    The system was just fine before presto. There's always going to be fare evasion and gate hoopers. But since Presto it's gotten out of control.
    Btw if you just ask the driver or collector and be polite, 99 percent of these guys will usually let you on especially if it's winter or late or whatever. Just ask. Don't destroy the already constantly malfunction and overpriced Presto gates the TTC felt the need to buy and install at ever single station.

    - As someone who have lived and worked around the world (London, Sydney, Singapore, NYC to name a few), I can tell you Toronto has the MOST AFFORDABLE public transit prices and the WORSE fare evasion I have ever seen!!!
    - What I do NOT understand is why the TTC makes it SO EASY to evade fares, even turning a blind eye to this shameful public behaviour! At least subway stations have gates, fare evasion on streetcars is rampant and publicly tolerated!

    • @Sam19509
      @Sam19509 6 лет назад +4

      It is the lowest subsidized transit system in North America at about $1/ride. All the systems you mentioned may have higher fares but they also are much better networks that draw much more riders. And European systems particularly are very clean without the class bias that you must be a lower income earner since your riding the bus. I have very wealthy friends and family in the UK who use their transit system consistently everyday - they claim they can read most of their daily newspapers on their iphone before when they get on and off between their commutes to work and home. I can do that in Toronto only if I live walking distance to a subway station with a job also a similar distance from a connected station.

      sam195 You apparently have never taken the Tube in London. Where in the UK is your family? You should only compare like to like - Toronto vs London, Montreal vs Manchester, Calgary vs Birmingham, etc.

    • @Sam19509
      @Sam19509 6 лет назад +2

      lol my family lives in London I've taken the underground from Rayners Lane to King's Cross. It was very clean the multiple times I took it to my uncle's liquor shop. I did notice the fares were more expensive relative to conversion in cdn dollars. However Brits pay more for fuel, parking, maintenance & insurance not to mention a ridiculous congestion charge so transit looks more attractive based on price. Everyone has an oyster card. The TTC just like NY transit is dirty with trash everywhere and homeless people getting their 8 hrs of sleep on trains. Chicago is similar to the TTC but for whatever reason despite having lower population than Toronto and last I checked lower annual ridership on their transit network it is better connected. Chicago unlike Toronto has transit connected in the far suburbs like subways into places similar to Scarborough and York. Toronto after more than a decade just extended into Vaughan.

    • @amywheelwright3146
      @amywheelwright3146 6 лет назад +3

      The truth is the Canadian and Ontario provincial governments severely lack long term vision and are GROSSLY irresponsible. Instead of the King Street Project gimmick short term fix, they should have invested heavily in constructing extensive new subway lines and even monorails long-long time ago if you ask me.
      350,000 more new immigrants to Canada EACH YEAR by 2020, more than half of which are projected to move to Toronto, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what the correct infrastructure investment scale should be. EVERY new immigrant should be charged an infrastructure premium to support growing investment in public facilities that they will inevitably need/use when they arrive.
      If you think the crowd and congestion is unbearable in Toronto now, then wait for just another couple of years and you will be nostalgic about the wonderful 2017!!

    • @Sam19509
      @Sam19509 6 лет назад +3

      Canada already has a tough time attracting skilled workers against the US and UK despite Trump & Brexit. There will be no premium charged it is called taxes and everyone pays. Refugees will never be expected to pay such a premium either since they usually come over with next to nothing. It is the Mike Harris PC government's fault and whoever was Mayor at the time in Toronto for the cancelled Eglinton West Subway and the incomplete Sheppard line. They should have stayed locked in on those projects regardless of the cost even if it meant tax hikes at the provincial or municipal level. It was a lot cheaper to build the necessary transit back then. It is a lot more expensive today. I read somewhere the that the entire Sheppard line could have been completed back in the early 2000s for a lower cost than what the one stop Scarborough Subway will cost in today's $$$.

      Not only those two cities have the fare evasion problem. Most other rapid transit systems such as BART, WMATA, MBTA, etc. had their touches of fare evasion. Another bad thing about it besides that it costs lots of revenue to accommodate free riders, also, these freeloaders would not offer their seats to revenue passengers. They are just plain selfish.

    Aren't there cameras in every station that can identify fare-evaders so the TTC police can possibly catch them the next time they try to repeat their offences? I imagine that face-recognition could even be used if the situation got out of hand.
    I have visited cities where some station's cashier booths were unmanned for whatever reason--perhaps only temporarily. On one occasion I needed to catch a train but because there was no one in the cashier's booth I obviously could not purchase a ticket so I had no choice but to jump over the turnstile and walk down to the platform to the arriving train.
    After reaching my destination station without having paid my fare, I walked up to a transit official to inform him about the unmanned station I had entered and the fact that I had no choice but to jump over the turnstile, since for all I knew, my act of fare evasion might have been caught on video surveillance and I did not want to considered a criminal. Oddly enough, the official did not seem in the least bit concerned about what I had done. Perhaps he figured I was I tourist (which was indeed the case) and sympathized with me. Thinking about it all later on, I thought that I might have looked directly into a video camera at the unmanned station, held out some currency, and waved my hands to let them know that I was willing to pay but obviously could not do so.
    A few years ago, when visiting Ottawa, after leaving the Via Rail train to enter the adjacent Light Rail station, there was no human cashier anywhere in sight. The ticket machines would not accept cash nor even my credit card for some reason, and I did not posess a Presto card. In the end, out of frustration and not wanting to hold up the line of people behind me any longer, I simply slid in quickly behind someone going through the turnstile and reached the platform where I soon noticed a transit employee approaching me. I informed this person what had happened, but she did not seem overly perturbed about it. So much for the "concern" over fare evasion--an act which is not always committed with malice aforethought.
    In rare cases, a station cashier would be using the restroom located in the rear of their booth, at which point some opportunistic people will deliberately wait to jump over the turnstiles without paying their fare. The moral to this story: when nature calls, expect some transit users to become opportunistic.
    Having said all of that, in some transit systems when attempting to use unfamiliar and confusing ticket machines, I have unfortunately overpaid the fare actually required for my trip, so I suppose in the end it all works out. The transit system rakes in more money than needed from tourists who overpay and who likely either don't realize it or don't want to make a fuss.

      The fare for the month is much less than the cost to rent a parking sport for your car in Toronto.

    This is nothing. Fare evaders do this in full view of fare inspectors at Spadina Station. When people exit the streetcar, those who didn't pay their fare avoid fare inspectors by breaking away from the crowd and walk on the edge of the platform in the other direction

    It’s to complicated because “People always want something for nothing” and that’s what I don’t understand about some people. You want the services but don’t want to pay for it??? Sorry 😐 but the world 🌎 doesn’t work like that people. You get what you give
