- Vic found this 1978 HZ Holden GTS Replica about 4 years ago now and it need a full Holden restoration. The good thing is that the vehicle had all the correct parts to make the restoration easy. When he got the GTS there rust in the usual places, but they were minimal which makes life easier to restore.
Joe had a massive part to play in this HZ Holden GTS as he sold the vehicle to Vic in the first place. Vic brought the HZ GTS on the condition that Joe would restore the vehicle back to its former glory, however, he would pay for the additional cost of parts, materials and other requirements as part of the restoration. Furthermore, the Joe restored it the way he knows best. Joe took this HZ Holden GTS as one his own.

The paint was done by Distorted Paint and Panel in Perth by Jayden and he did a fantastic job with the Flamingo Red Factory Colour and redo the paint coded bumpers as well that all 1978 HZ Holden GTS came out with from the factory. Vic got the GTS original rims refurnished as well and placed back on the vehicle. The GTS also had the front spoiler on the HZ Holden had was paint to flamingo Red as well.

Fun Fact - Holden in 1978 -1979 start using up the old parts to go in the New Commodore series, but some on the new parts also went into the HZ models as the old stock was used up. That's why some vehicle had the vinyl trim and others had the vinyl and cloth trims. This was also in the engines and mechanical parts as well.
Engine Bay
The HZ Holden GTS is running a 253 Holden engine which is not the original one but is period correct for this model. It has factory Air Conditioning and Factory Power Steering with a 4 quad jet carby that is nice and thirsty. The engine did not need any rebuilding but is was brought back to factory specs and stylish to make the HZ Holden like as Original as possible and with a standard 2" Exhaust System with chrome tips for that classic look.
Interior
In the interior the front seats are all original and have not been refurnished, so straight out of the factory. However, they were cleaned to brighten up the cloth trim just like new. The back seat had to be retrimmed due to sun cracking the vinyl but the cloth trim was still fantastic. Vic got the Doors retrimmed and the arm rests. The HZ Holden had the GTS dash already in it but it was Wood grained so Vic swapped it out for a straight Black GTS dash instead, but he still has the original one in storage.
The original stereo was refurnished to add in Bluetooth for phones and AM / FM Channel which was done in Perth. These are very popular these days.
At the moment Vic is unsure if this HZ was a special order from the factory or just Holden reusing old stock before the change over to Commodores. He is going to the Holden Historical Services to find out more.

Nice one, I have an original '77 HZ GTS 253 4 speed, very few of them made. Found it in a shed in 2016 hadn't moved for 20 years, bought it and gave it a full resto. They are the best looking "Monaro" they made, though I am obviously a bit biased 🤣. Great to see some local content from Perth.

i had a original HX gts monaro (1977 lima yellow the last ones with the blacked out bonnet gts painted on the rear doors and the back of the boot lid, lima yellow color coded bumpers 253 4 speed, honey comb wheels and caps, cream interior with herring bone inserts) had this car for 15 years (second owner brought with 110,000 kms sold with 245,000 kms) also owned a original HQ ss but in red also a 253 with a 4 speed traded the HQ for the HX

I have pictures but will have to dig them out sold the Hx in 2000 also have the original build sheet that they put under the carpet I will be see if I can scan it (it is covered in contact) traded it on a 6 cylinder commode by the time I got rid of it, it had a V8 built by Greg Thompson (the same guy who won the burn out at the summer nats in a Capri with a 454 in it) a top loader gearbox and and a 9 inch diff, traded the commodore in for a hsv manta traded the manta for a 2005 club sport then traded the club sport for my current car a 2016 VFll redline with a 6 speed in red of course
