I actually liked Sonic Adventure 2 I thought it was a fun game for the time and now its just nostalgia. But people that are obsessed with Sonic and can't see most sonic games are bad have problems. Sega went under for a reason and it wasn't just the dreamcast or saturn. Also why is it that sonic fans are generally deeper in the spectrum than most other fandoms? This is a genuine question not being mean or anything. There has to be an explanation for that.

Checking my bias at the door, I like Sonic stuff. Generally pretty positive on most aspects of the franchise, tend to like Sonic games more than Mario for the way I play them (I love time trials lmao)
I want to really stress the idea that Sonic fans have been an internet punching bag for over ten years. I know you've seen the Chaomix video, so it's not like this is all new information, but having high publicity reviews from IGN and G4 suggesting something along the lines of "You're going to want to kill yourself" for engaging with any Sonic game is devastating for fans who just like a thing. Not because the review affects the fans, but the review certainly affects a wider audience far more than the fans could. Whether or not you agree with the game's quality doesn't matter at that point, a whole lot of people now passively accept "Sonic is pretty dogshit" and move on because they were neutral and didn't care in the first place. And it's not like anyone's gonna check them on it, because that would require someone to engage with The Game That Makes You Want To Kill Yourself. Keep in mind that in some spots (like IGN,) the supreme unholy stinker that is Sonic 06 was rated slightly higher than the game that followed it, Sonic Unleashed. Who would engage with a series that puts out back to back stinkers like that?
If you look through your twitch vod, or even some of the comments under this video, the idea that Sonic fans are delusional is reoccurring. The idea that there's something wrong with them for liking Sonic. That they've been Stockholm syndrome'd into liking Sonic. That they should just like better things. None of these engage with the reason people like Sonic all, it's all mean-spirited remarks for the sake of punching a person's opinion down. There's no regard for the notion that maybe some people just like the gameplay, or the characters inside it, or the style, or the music, and there's no attempt to understand it. That's been the case for over a decade. I think that Sonic fans have been worn down so immensely because of this treatment, and your "Sonic fans are delusional, there was never a psyop, and I think most people don't actually like Sonic" tweets struck an exposed nerve. Granted, it's not like no one's ever struck that nerve before, and you might think that someone hits that nerve every three months. But you definitely hit it with a hammer in spectacular fashion.
One sentiment I saw in these comments is that the idea behind Sonic is not just about speed, but is also about personal freedom, being genuine enough to be true to yourself, and like what you like even if it's campy or edgy or cringe. I think that's pretty spot on, for the most part. I think that a big reason why people like Sonic because it usually comes across as so genuine, and appreciation that they really just fucking GO for it when they write games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, or even 06 (unholy stinker that it is) and Unleashed, and now Frontiers to an extent. Gameplay opinions aside, people love the characters inside the game too. I think that you don't interact with games in that way very often, and that's totally fine, but I think it's worth acknowledging in regards to how people can come to love a series.
Lol. Your acting like sonic (a video game) is some important part of your identity as opposed to just being a thing you like. It's weird. People can make as much fun of it as they want, it's a game. It's not like it's some part of you like sexuality or race. Play the games if you like them, people shitting on them should have no bearing on your life. You're right, and I agree, it shouldn't have any bearing on your life if someone doesn't like the thing you like. But I'm also saying that people who endure a lot opposition from loud people about that thing they like are likely to get more and more frustrated and snap when they've had enough. Yeah I agree but to an extent it’s understandable when someone says “your game is dog shit and no one likes it” (not what coney said and still doesn’t excuse bad behaviour) because that’s clearly antagonising and not putting forward any actual criticism and it’s just not fair in general to anyone. At that point when there’s no criticism and it’s just being mean it becomes an attack on your taste and that’s not ok generally. Again doesn’t excuse death threats and other horrid behaviour but it’s not just the people getting defensive that need to think about their mindset, people making criticism also need to word it in a way that’s actually constructive

I think Sonic fans are so defensive because the entire ethos of Sonic is unabashedly liking the cool and campy and edgy things purely because they are cool and campy and edgy, and that sort of straightforward appeal was exactly what became LEAST popular in most gaming circles. It’s less about RUclips specifically or even the quality of the games, I think. It’s just that the fan base and the games they enjoy have been relentlessly shit on for the better part of a decade. I’m not defending the insane behavior here, but that’s what I think bred this contempt for “sonic hate.”
Yeah, Sonic as a franchise became the butt of the joke for like a decade because of people saying shit like "Sonic was never good" and "rough transition to 3D", stuff which has zero basis in fact if you pay attention to how the franchise was received prior to the dark times.
If Sonic wasn't good, he wouldn't have survived going up against Mario, and for all its flaws Sonic Adventure was received really well at the time and is still fun today. People just formulated the idea Sonic Adventure was a mess because the most widely available version of it is a messy port that introduced bugs the original game never had.

What I think Sonic fans are defensive over is more so the reception of their games in spite of that criticism, because much of gaming discourse paints their fan base as childish cringe lords. As for his personality, I think it did cause a schism (ie coney hating Sonic upon Adventure’s release because of it) but I wouldn’t say it’s an undeniable sore spot as far as the Series’ overall strength. The main reason why Sonic fans are so mean to people with negative takes is because Sega has a habit of exclusively listening to creators with audiences and abandoning their fanbase.
Yes they are creator states their opinion and it doesn’t reflect the view of the wider fanbase they get nervous that Sega will only listen to that creator think they represent all gamers opinion. It doesn’t excuse some sonic fans fan behaving like dicks but it’s understandable as to why they behave that way.
Then take that up with Sega. Taking game criticism as a personal attack is never not going to be corny and lame.

They weren’t even judging his gameplay, they were basing this solely off of the arbitrary end of stage rankings he got. I love these kinds of ranking systems but nine times out of 10 they are either completely broken, way too lenient, or way too strict, and Sonic is no exception.

It's almost like I knew I had reasons to love Sonic, I could see the numerous amazing sides of the franchise (if they weren't there, why would I like it, then?) and could appreciate them without tying my whole personality to it and blinding myself to its bad parts.
The Internet has changed. The online Sonic fandom prior to 2010s wasn't afraid to shit on each others' tastes. People who liked classics found Adventure insulting, people who liked Adventure found the classics boring. Everyone dunked on 06, and people who liked 06 retaliated. Debates on whether Heroes was the best or actually worse than 06... That's just nerd culture, it is how it is, it's real and it's FUN, it means people have genuine passion, it means the franchise has a soul.
And if even we dunk on each other, of course there will be people from outside dunking on us too. The people who had the biggest butthurt from the GameGrumps drama in 2015 were mostly DeviantArtists/Tumblrites who were busy drawing OCs instead of fully engaging with the games and the rest of Sonic media, and having proper conversations. And now they've outnumbered the nerds and taken over the fandom

IMO Sonic is whatever the time period thinks is cool. In the 90s he was just a cool, fun guy, in the early 2000s he was also a cool guy but his hames were pretty edgy, in 2010s he was more self aware and self depricating in a way, and after Frontiers (2020s) he's whatever he wants to be, he's his own man.

As a Sonic fan, seeing the thumbnail immediately set me off to know I was in for a ride. I didn't really like the 2010 era for Sonic *because* it made Sonic a joke where multiple people had very shaky critiques along with judging it through a hyper modern lense but I do feel like blaming specific people is a little corny especially when SEGA themselves were playing into it. Arin didn't make himself the brand ambassador. In general if anyone has any qualms with any Sonic game nowadays, I look at it, judge if its worth my time, reply respectfully or even meme a bit and move on with my day. I love this franchise but could not be bothered to engage seriously in something like this. Hell, *I'm* critical of the franchise. It's not like it's known for consistency. To end my rambling, Sonic is a weird ass thing that is guaranteed to spark loud conversation. Like what you like, don't like what you don't. Just don't lie about it or be funny and we're cool.

The thing about pokemon is the media surrounding the games more than makes up for how technically mediocre the actual mainline games are. The movies, anime, all the plushies and toys and merch, even the TCG are all good enough to excuse the games being pretty copy-paste for a while.

I was in middle school when Sonic Adventure came out, and Coney is right. The perception at the time was there was a noticeable drop in quality of Sonic, to the point that it was no longer popular. I don't think new gens really understand how popular Sonic was in the mid 90s before his semi-failed transition to 3D games. I think Coney is coming from the culture of actually growing up with the Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Lock-on-Tech Knuckles. Sonic Adventure might have been novel IF you even had a Dreamcast, but the magic was gone and it was generally considered really bad and riddled with bugs. You couldn't help compare it with Mario 64 which was older and insanely polished for what it was.

As someone who likes SA2, I really do think your overall experience with SA2 is extremely valid. Especially looking back at my first time playing the game, which in short I hated the game at first, the reason why I ended up liking it later on was because as I played it more I started learning strategies that helped me get through the game.
So overall because of that experience I could always understand why people hate the game sue to that experience, and ngl your experience does sound about right overall.

because sonic has so much potential besides being a game series. He has an appealing design, and a wide cast of recognizable characters. Add movies, shows, comics and more under your belt, and you have a franchise that can survive some of gaming's worst pitfalls and even earn itself a bit of a renaissance rn in the 2020s.

Off topic. I started watching Coney a few weeks ago, and I have been going through the cringe confessions videos. I have been in a bit of a weird headspace lately, mainly thanks to ADHD (not really doing anything/not knowing what to do), but those videos are very watchable and very fun. All that to say, Coney is a riot, and I am glad he makes videos. If any of you have reached this far: I hope you are okay and drinking enough water.
The thing with weird internet communities is that people end up in them because they can’t find places to fit in irl.
Those people are often overly defensive with their interests because they’re used to being ostracized. Their defensive actions then ostracize their internet community, and it forms echo chambers

I'm not a sonic fan, but I truly love Sonic Adventure 2. I won't back down, I am not going to try to quantify why it's good. I just love it man. Vibes, artstyle, expressiveness, level design, idk I think it's all great. Even the jank that game has to offer is charming to me now, it's so goofy. I get why people think it's bad, but I also feel bad for those who didn't play this game as a kid - true magic.

Ngl I get the intention but like many have pointed out when it calmed down a bit, Sonic games have always been subjected to harsher criticism than it ever deserved be it from supposed professionals and popular reviewers who's opinion got inflated way too much than it had any right too, the fact that "Sonic had a rocky transition to 3D" is a meme among the community because they know dman well every review of a Sonic game from a gaming journalist starts with a sentence among those lines, at this point using the Sonic fandom to go and act like their games are and have always been bad is pretty redundant and no one in there is gonna try and read your intentions and they'll just go for the offense like just pick any other fanbase to do that shit, why not Mario or pokemon games or even Zelda, they'll have more backbone and you wouldn't be here to tell anything but "this fandom is chill"

Juat finished watching the video, the plot twist of SA2 without a frame rate cap was unexpected (and yet its somehow less busted than SA1's Steam port- even Sonic players know both have issues and use fixes), but I think what surprised me even more was Coney giving a moment of redemption to Tonkatruck (and the "like the shit you want" message)

I don't think all fan communities are bad, and some can genuinely be overall pretty chill and friendly despite a lot of disagreements. But most fan communities can take this stuff way, WAY to seriously.

I only saw this happening passively on Twitter and it was fun reading what was going on and not that long after Chaomix made that one video that got Sonic fans to agree on the 2010s era of the franchise which was the reason people were looking back at these old reviews in the first place.
I’ve been a Sonic fan most of my life and I’ve played most of the games often enough that I understand why some people may not like even some of the better games in the series that have come out since the first Adventure game. Because look, OG versions or not, while I like both Adventure games, Adventure 1 in particular being one of my personal favorite games in the series, I do find myself only playing the Sonic and Shadow levels in the respective games when I replay them, I don’t replay the story unless I for whatever reason lost a save or I bought a new version of these games. I know the games well enough to play the other gameplay styles well and consistently clear them quickly but I still always felt they’re the weakest parts of the games. That’s where I understand where Projared is coming from with his take, it’s very understandable to play these games for the first time and just mentally check out in any level that doesn’t play like a traditional Sonic level and that makes up the majority of both Adventure games.
And yeah, the people who played Adventure 1 and 2 on other versions that aren’t the originals, that really isn’t their fault. Shoot, a lot of Sonic fans started with Adventure 2 Battle, the Gamecube version as their first game in the series because that’s how many Nintendo fans got introduced to Sonic, it wasn’t until years later where more people started to pick up on the Dreamcast versions of the Adventure games being more polished so anyone jumping into the series for the first time now shouldn’t be expected to immediately know that themselves, the Adventure games are on Steam, you can buy them normally like every other officially licensed video game on the platform, of course most people who are interested are going to look there first and not even consider that there’s a better version they can emulate or something.

The people who get mad about other people's takes on things just haven't learned about the power of not giving a shit yet. I know, cause I used to be that kid that gave a shit when people didn't like things I liked, or vice versa. Like, in the case of Sonic, the main problem with the 2010s was that SEGA was listening more to people who don't like Sonic over the fans of the series, which lead to the series feeling bland for a while (with the exception of Mania). It's one thing when people don't like what you like, but it's another thing when those opinions actually start to have a negative effect on the thing you like. Regardless, that era is done and over with, so there's no reason to keep bringing it up. SEGA's listening to the fans now, and we've been getting some cool shit as of late because of that. I wish more game series listened primarily to their fans as opposed to people who won't even buy the games anyways tbh.

I really hate the way people use the term "bad take" or "good take". Like they essentially just mean opinions but with a layer of "objectivity". Like, I'll see people say that X youtuber is bad because he has "bad takes" but in reality its just X youtuber liking a game they dont like or disliking a game they like. It sucks too cause i used to see people use the term "bad take" to refer to whenever someone said something awful/racist or whatever but its been watered down so much.

this video is so funny to me, because I have a young nephew who loves Sonic wears Sonic merch when he comes over, had a Sonic Birthday party, and knows a good amount of characters, but I genuinely don't think this kid has ever played a Sonic game in his life since he only has a tablet as his house and I don't ever remember seeing any form of a Sonic game on it.

I recently played a bunch of Sonic games:
- Sonic Adventure is good, but dated.
- Sonic Adventure 2 is a tad bit better.
- Sonic 06...I actually liked it lmao
- Shadow the Hedgehog has ass level design but a decent story and fantastic OST
- The Genesis Games are all great.
I like Sonic. I know some of the games aren't that great, but I still like the Blue Blurr and his games.

Sonic 06 is one of the only Sonic games I own a physical copy of, I got it as a gift from my dad when I was a child lol. I've been meaning to replay it cause I don't remember how bad it was. I did beat it so I'm guessing it was at least playable.
i feel like i'm the only one who prefers SA1... i like that the levels allow for more exploration and replayability like the genesis games did. SA2 is still very good, and I like its story better.

idk, i've never liked the adventure games but ya blowin out ya ass a bit, it's hard to act like they haven't had some impact and clearly were loved by the kids who had them and still are. as solid as mario, probably never, but there's some level of quality that has managed to keep him alive well past most mascot platformer's expiration date outside of the belligerent forces of super autism.

When I was in high school at a local county fair and carnival about over 10 years ago, myself along with a friend of mine got on stage to sing Live and Learn he wasn't much of a Sonic fan but I was, he even brought a guitar to play along with the song as it played and I would be the one singing. I was so happy and confident that we would put on a good show, but I was way over my head. Just as we started I looked out on the crowd and got stage fright instantly and I broke down. As the song was playing with no lyrics my friend was still playing guitar but slowed to a halt to ask if I was ok. Meanwhile we hear a shout from the crowd some boos and one guy shouted Weeb! I felt personally attacked by that and flipped off the guy. Thankfully the crowd knew that I was only flipping off that one guy and not the whole crowd, but that was embarrassing to me and my friend. We walked off and canceled it. I mostly felt bad for putting my friend through that, but that's why Sonic fans feel angry when ever other people say Sonic sucks because it feels like they're being bullied or booed at for liking Sonic.

Sonic games aren't bad as a whole, they are heavily flawed. Most Sonic games have excellent proofs of concept that shine at certain moments, but have so much drudgery and mediocrity mixed into the experience. I was born in the 80's, and even as a kid, I couldn't truly enjoy Sonic games. I've tried so many times to give several Sonic games a try, and the only one I enjoyed all the way through was Sonic Mania.

As a fellow "old person" of 35. I actually always liked sonic. The only hatred was me going "Sonic is popular? That means he's lame!" and "Sonic the Hedgehog is just like any other good guy main character form any series". The more time goes on, the more I love the series and all it's characters to the point where it's getting to one of my favorites. I had a massive shock when I dared even think about making Sonic my main in Smash a couple months ago. Obviously in the wrong timeline :3
Outside of that I never hated the Sonic games I played. Just the original game after I played 2 & 3 (no spin dash!?, where's my speed?). Also Sonic Heroes because I was expecting the length of each mission to be like the previous games, not 10+ minutes. Though overtime I kinda like them too.
That said, there's definitely BS in the 3D games, but I kind of like the BS because it gives an impression you can laugh about later. Like 19:45 is an example of it being kind of BS. I love seeing everyone's reaction to those propellers. It's like that perfect balance of "oh this make sense" and the homing attack doing BS sometimes going off to the side (and to your death). I grew up with BS in video games, sooo Sonic was nothing new in that regard, just he usually had more hilarious BS, and stuff that caused tame gamer rage in people (as opposed to keyboard slamming rage of certain competitive games)
It's funny hearing people say that SA 1 & 2 were bad in retrospect, because I never heard a single person say that when they were new. People were loving the games too much. Hating sonic was kind of my thing at the time, but it did look and play better than a lot of other games at the time from the games I owned, and played at friend's houses.
That said, I've missed a toon of sonic games. I basically left off with Sonic Heroes/Shadow the hedgehog being my last sonic games. I'm one of those people that actually like the shadow game. Has a lot of ideas I like, but quality of execution varies. Like I get that you're supposed to feel lost in the ARK levels which fits the story thematically if I rememebr right, but when you pick up a game thinking you're going to go fast, it kinda didn't hit right for most people. Again, I love various BS in games, and I didn't care. Also I love the slipperyness in that game. So many times I've gone "Whooooaa!" almost going off the stage, then homing attack or something back on stage. Of course, my favorite gameplay styles in Sonic Adventure 1 was Sonic and E-102...... Sooooo I got addicted to blowing up everything at ludicrous speeds =)
Recently people have been poking me to play Sonic games. Saying that Sonic Frontiers is different than all the other games that have come out for a long time. So time will tell. Hope you had fun listening to my ramble for the week =p I swear I don't care much about Sonic. Just a little tired from work, and Sonic is such nostalgia bait :3
