Saw it and honestly thought it was meh, most the short's jokes fell flat and seemed like they were playing it too safe. It felt watered down compared to previous volumes.

He can run at sound speed, take out enemies in a flash, and best of all, he's blue colored and knows how to handle the females. Speaking of females, the Sonic universe might also be classified as "Hot Chick Heaven" because there's such a mess of very beautiful and tough women that it will make you love the franchise even more! This video makes for a fairly good companion piece to wallaceprower's recent (as in a couple hours difference) interview with the Sonic Paradox team members! Said interview covers their general history and rise to prominence, while this video observes the works released by fans since said team's formation, regardless of association.
Also, perhaps I heard wrong, but congrats Shunks on being able to contribute to S.Shorts Vol. 9! I sincerely can't believe it's been so long since the last volume was released, and I'm excited to see what's in store.

i remember i was so hyperfixated on dorkly's sonic for hire, to the point where during the tails mob boss arc i had a dream where i was yoshi and i had a meeting with tails, and for some reason he started yelling at me for getting something wrong and then broke down crying. idk why thats a core memory for me, but it is :P
Man I still remember all of the early 2010s sonic animations and artworks, what a crazy time period that was, not just for the Sonic fandom but many fandoms in general at the time tbh like Mario, MLP, Minecraft and so much more
Pretty niche, but the one short that got me so much as a kid was the "How to make your own Sonic fan character" short. That had me googling for "Sonic pix", expecting some easy Sonic picture editing program to show up (I didn't know how to copy + paste images back then soo).
Then I took up drawing, made about 14 recolors (four of them being recolors of Ray the flying squirrel). Most of my imagination would be dedicated to story/animation ideas of them until like, 2015 xD

First off, I wish I had a massive playlist with everything you just mentioned in order, just for my convenience.
Second, I was very much entertained by everything. I watched Sonic Zombies recently while binging all of Balena Productions. I never saw it as a kid but I found it incredibly funny even now. It’s a time capsule of the era and I’m sad that some scenes and jokes were cut for modern audiences.

I've noticed that more recent fan projects from fandoms like Sonic or MLP are kind of the opposite of these early animations in a way. Mashed's more recent Sonic animations, for example, are more accurate to the canon games in terms of tone and characterizations than most of these earlier animations that generally relied on shock/meta humor or the fandom's charcaterizations. MLP feels the same, with even the recent infection au trend feeling less like horror for the sake of shock, if that makes sense? Of course the fan projects then and now are full of creativity and talent from the people behind them, but I feel the culture then and now has changed drastically because the current fans grew up with the "edgier" content and are now making content that tend to be more lighthearted or at least stay truer to the source material despite the darker tone (in the case of the infection au versus something like Cupcakes lol) compared to back then. There's nothing inherently right or wrong with either, but I do find it an interesting contrast.
Sonic Shorts is what actually got me into discovering the franchise as a whole

Fun little fact about Sonic Paradox. The guys who did quite a few of those animations would go on to make their own fancomics. One being a retelling of Sonic's adventure from the beginning with OC Tempest the Dolphin as a main character for the first five issues. They currently are working their way through the Sonic 3 & Knuckles arc, with Cassia from Archie Sonic's reboot being a hero instead of a reluctant villain. Their other comic is a 'What-If' future in which Sonic had vanished one fateful day, leave the rest of the cast to age, some even getting married, and live out their lives in seeming peace... until a strange new hedgehog appears who looks an awful lot like Sonic.
The first fancomic is called Sonic Legacy. I would recommend it, though much like any freelance fancomic, it is going to be taking its time with its story.
I remember being one of the kids with unrestricted internet access who didn't get any of the sex jokes. First time I've seen someone talk about animations I saw as a kid other than Brawl Taunts.

Fun little fact: A friend of mine made a little re-cut and re-dub of the Nazo cartoon of the DX cut, and I got to make the logo for that video.
Three of the Sonic Paradox shorts I remember VIVIDLY were both REALLY early internet in multiple ways.
-A parody of the Sally robot episode, specifically the "funny kiss" scene. It was strangely well animated.
-Tails doll credits scene that scared the shit out of me.
-How to make a Sonic OC, featuring Trevor-I mean Jesus.

I grew up on this stuff and I have no regrets. One sonic animation that I used to watch that wasn’t listed was Sonic Halloween costume. I won’t spoil anything. All in all, I am happy I watched these animations as a kid.

Ah yes, all of those old Sonic animations on New Grounds. To me I would just burst out laughing since I stumbled upon them around when I was 15 losing it to some of the more unhinged ones like the Sonic Glitched series or Sonic and the McChicken. ( grade A shitpost back then. )
That one animation where sonic keeps waking up to increasingly worrying characters sharing a bed with him saying "what a nightmare" was literally my favorite thing ever when I was 11 years old.

Yes and no. There are different traumas, all weighing differently. Sure seeing some overly shrexual jokes or gore as a kid isn't the same as abuse, but it can be traumatising either way.

Balenaproductions are the goat of Sonic Fan shows. Being in 4-5 grade watching Sonic Zombie, it was so dumb, but it was so good 😭. Though a lot of the stuff from the original was cut out cause of either copyright or because the jokes were over the line, like there was a joke in the space episode where Eggman was like, 'WHERE ARE MY HORNHOGS?!' And a Silver clone was like 'the hornhogs are busy graping each other' to which it would show the hornhogs humping eachother. If you watch the show now, you can't find the jokes, but if you watch old reaction videos, you can still find them. And another, which now I understand why he got rid of this joke, but the ship episode has a joke where Knuckles has a thing for Espio and he wants to sit on his horn, and later they actually agree to do the dirty and this joke is no longer in the video, but Espio tells Knuckles to let his dress up for him, and when he tells Knuckles he's ready, you see Espio with two watermelons as boobs and a KFC bucket around his crotch, I didn't get it at the time but that was a black stereotype joke cause Knuckles was given an Eddie Murphy voice and was referred to as black in some parts of the show.

I used to watch the shit out of the Newgrounds Sonic animation comps as a kid... on RUclips. Yeah people would upload these to RUclips, and not with the permission of the original animators; I remember there being a Sonic Sez style PSA in one of them where they basically told people "Hey, stop uploading our shit to youtube without our permission you fuckheads."
also I swear that Evil Tails was animated by Zeurel, and if it isn't then it looks almost identical to the way he animates characters with manic as all hell expressions.
When I was WAY younger, maybe 10 or 11, I remember stumbling across this web series called "Sonic GX" At least, im pretty sure thats the name. It was kind of a sequel series to the SATAM show as well as Sonic X cuz it brought the freedom fighters into the Sonic X continuity. It was animated via pixel art, in the same vain as Super Mario Bros X. I remember being super invested as a kid and super pissed cuz it all ended with a cliff hanger. I haven't even THOUGHT about this series until now, this video unlocked a memory.
Nazo Unleashed was PEAK as a kid. Also you remember the SSS Show with those Sonic sprites. (Specifically Leon the Snowwolf, & 12gameschamp21)

i've thought for a while that "i wasn't really that into sonic as a kid" but this just unearthed a vault of buried memories
2:27 No. The joke wasn't that Sonic X was bad or Sonic fans didn't like it. It was that 4kids completely censored it, altered and deleted scenes rather unnecessarily, cut down episode runtimes, and neutered the original version of the show, along other foreign properties that the company heavily altered; Magical DoReMe, Mew Mew Power, Shaman King, Winx Club, and don't get us started with the infamous story of their One Piece dub or their version of Dragon Ball Kai. Characters were saying lines the game counterparts would never say or just had their motives changed, they changed plotlines of some episodes entirely, greatly downplayed elements of the show like Amy's love for Sonic by making it one sided and Chris's trauma and abandonment issues were handled poorly in the dub (which led to most Sonic fans unfairly judging him harshly), and removed the real OST of the show completely for the same OST they used in all their other shows on their block.
All of these bring back memories of going to my friend’s house after school getting on the computer together and watching all these videos. The nostalgia is real.
I once read all of Tails gets Trolled, and I honestly think I have become a worse human being since.

From my early days of watching Sonic fan animated stuff I don't think I saw anything that scared me to my core well maybe besides grim dark Sonic stuff maybe?
But for the most part it was Nazo, tons of Sonic sprite animations with jokes that went way over my head and also ask the Sonic heroes as well. Along with Sonic plush videos as well.
Also Back2s0uls is probably one of my favourite animators from that era that made the everyone loves Shadow. There actually working in the animation industry now, which is awesome.

Nazo, Sonic Shorts, Paint it Black were all part of my childhood, there was also this SonAmy sprite animation set to Everytime We Touch which is SUCH peak 2000’s vibes, and Sonic Uncut in particular i remember finding through a Sonic video podcast! i’m pretty sure it was The Sonic Show? but when i investigated their youtube channel i saw them talk about how they lost a lot of older content which is a bummer 😫

Some of them, yes. Others were Sonic Shorts, which were bloody hilarious alot of the time. But most actual disturbing Sonic animations fell well short of those damn ponies. Lol.

Sonic Shorts, my beloved. I think I saw this way before knowing a lot about Sonic itself like the SatAM cast (around secondary school, I think). I did know Silver from the Mario & Sonic olympic games series though.
I think besides some of the early Dorkly Sonic stuff, like the Sonic OC video and the immortal Tails one, I never watched Sonic For Hire until the 2021 or so, all of the stuff before Sonic "goes to college" or something. What's sure is that I didn't even saw the Egette episodes. I wish well for Lowbrow, if they're still existing despite Rooster Theeth not existing anymore. I did watch some Dorkly though, mainly Pokemon Rusty.
Animation Domination High Def, that's something I haven't thought of in ages. The main stuff I watched from them was their Kill la kill-esque parody mini-series, even if I did watch some of their Scientificly accurate stuff too.

I'm assuming you haven't seen GMod Idiot Box, considering you're not too familiar with animations of that style. I suggest that you do, it's basically a late 2000s - early 2010s time capsule that stood at the top of GMod animation (or maybe even RUclips animation as a whole) before the SFM era. I rewatch it from time to time, it's brilliant

I think another honorable mention would be the International Morin Patrol and Sonic Movie Madness created by Roger Van Der Weide from the early 2000’s on newgrounds. Those animations defined my childhood.

There was this Sonic animation called "Sonic breaks his Neck" I found one day as a kid, and boy, it really shook me. I looked back on it a year ago, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. Sure, still kinda disturbing, but I laughed a few times! Might make a video on it some day.
