    I'm from Eindhoven. Old buildings in the area still have the holes from the fighting. To remember, not that they can't be repaired, of course that's no longer the case. Many places are called to american soldiers like the Joey Mann theatre in Best. Also in Limburg is a very large American cemetery Margraten. Very impressive. People have adopted the graves of unknown American soldiers so they can find peace. You must look to that pictures and videos.

    They strangely portray Cobb as kind of a cowardly asshole but just know in reality he was the only member of easy that had seen combat prior to Normandy. He served in Africa and survived having his troop transport torpedoed and sunk by a german u-boat. He was no punk and had put in work.

    One thing American soldiers are known for is their interactions with kids. They often do a bit more in war torn countries for the kids than people realize. My unit, the ones that were stationed in country during Vietnam, helped with local orphanages. Many of the kids are citizens here as a result of their exposure to the American soldier and are grateful to this day. I sent a lot of candy to my husband when he was stationed in Iraq to pass out to the local kids. Along with school supplies we did as wives of his unit.

    11:53 Several of the female collaborators did more than sleep with the Germans, as they also revealed who was working for the resistance. I remember reading that one woman lost three brothers and her father because they were snitched on. The women were lucky to get shaved; they should have been shot with the men, in my opinion.
    21:20 Just some info on Winters (the guy who didn’t get his helmet shot off) and Nixon (the guy who did). Winters came from a poor family and needed to work his way through college. Nixon came from a rich family and attended Yale for two years before leaving to enlist in the Army. (Nixon's attending Yale comes up offhandedly in a conversation in a future episode.) Winters was a monkish introvert who read all the infantry manuals he could get his hands on. Nixon was a party animal who loved to drink. Winters was a field commander, while Nixon was in Intelligence, which meant that he helped translate the data received from the field into information that people could use. The pair met up during Officer Candidate School, and their friendship started from there.

    By the way, The 101st Airborne division was "on alert" the whole time they were resting and refitting in England (after D-Day). They were told SEVERAL times that they were to jump into this area or that battle only to have to stand down hours before they were to fly in. The German line kept collapsing so fast that the fights were always over before they could get involved. It was stressful and frustrating for the men of Easy Company (and all other companies).

  • @mithroch
    @mithroch 3 месяца назад +6

    It's a common misconception that Nixon's helmet saved him... it did not, he was just lucky. Helmets were protection against falling debris and some ricochets. They would not protect from direct fire as demonstrated by Nixon's helmet having two bullets holes... an entrance and an exit. Had Nixon's head been between those holes he would likely be dead. As it happens, the shot was close but errant.

    A "unit citation" could be worn by ANYONE in that unit. Even replacements, as it was a mark of honour for the unit. Replacements could thereby show that they had the HONOUR of serving in such a unit even if they had not done anything heroic (yet).

    The British military HQ had information about the German strength in and around Arnhem. Like said in this episode: just old men and children. The reality was that there were 2 tank divisions "resting"at the drop zone for Arnhem. There is also a movie called A bridge too far about this. In the week of September 17, the residents of Arnhem still reflect on what happened 80 years ago (this year).

    If you're new to WW2 era lingo, the words "Jerry" and "Kraut" are names the Allies used in reference to the Germans. This is why in one episode when passing a dead German solider, one of the characters says "Don't wake Jerry". But the term Kraut is used more often. The British tended to call Germans "Fritz". The term Limey also shows up at least once, in Episode 10, but that is not a reference to the Germans, but to the British (who of course love to call Americans "Yanks").

    Two of the tanks involved in this scene, the first one a Tiger tank, the second large one with a fixed gun (no turret) a Jagdpanther specifically designed to destroy other tanks were some of the most fearsome and hard to kill tanks at this time in the war. The infantry immediately fell back as there was absolutely nothing they could do. Hell, there wasn't anything the tanks could do either, especially in an urban setting seeing as our Sherman (with a 75mm gun) and the British Cromwell (also equipped with a 75mm gun) could not penetrate the frontal armor of either tank and would have to rely on flanking maneuvers to hit the side and rear armor where they were vulnerable. Absolutely horrifying to encounter.

    The women were being punished for what was called "horizontal collaboration." One of the reasons the Dutch felt so strongly about what the women were doing was the possibility that they could reveal information about the local resistance movement, which provided information to the Allies about German activities in the area. The German Gestapo would torture and execute members of the resistance.

    Battlefield 1941, old PC video game. Operation Market is the most difficult to win. It's basically a planned loss unless you can find a way to stop the German tanks. One way a video game got it right.

    7:44 It isn't out of nervousness, he was color blind, so he doesn't know what light is green and red. He more than likely lied to get into the Army about his color blindness.

    Market Garden was a logistical and intelligence disaster. The Allies learned a lot from Market Garden.

    We had some incredible men back then. Not without their flaws, but this show always makes me wonder if I could do that shit. It's easy to say you could, but you never know until you are in it. Luckily for we had some brave bad ass mofos around back then that will hopefully be the last American generation to fight in a world war.

    It was Cobb who said "I'm not going out there" - he's got a big mouth, but he's mostly talk, little action. His favorite thing to do seems to be picking on people he thinks can't/won't fight back.
