Thanks - saved me a headache- I wasn’t replacing rotors and found it pretty easy to fit everything once I disconnected the hand brake cable . Also the hex (4mm on mine ) adjusts the hand brake - so once you’ve fitted everything -wind it back in -until you feel resistance, then until you cant turn the axle - then back it off 1/2 a turn or so until you can spin axle freely. It self adjusts after that .
Thank you for posting this I was totally stumped. This worked I was fighting with these for hours befor I found this. I was able to finish within half an hour after so.
PS. That hex/allen screw will come out as it isn't a screw at all, but rather a sort of narrow worm gear that turns a gear that's fixed in there. When I stuck the allen key in, it was a tight fit and I pulled the gear right out. It went back in without issues. Thanks again for this tutorial.
If you remove the brake cable from the caliper it allows you to move the caliper around freely. Also the manual says to screw the Allen socketed bolt counter clockwise until it stops, to pull the piston back and when reassembling, screw it clockwise until the pads just touch the disc then back it off 1/3 of a turn.
Thanks a bunch! I have a 2002 Mazda Protege5 and I was ripping out my hair trying to figure out why it was not compressing. I even removed that bolt, but never looked inside of it to find the hex nut.
When refitting calliper you should fit pad housing first. Then mount pads check slides and mount calliper. But to do this you need to disconnect hand cable at rear then refit
I just did front and rear pads on my 323 protege 2002. Front was easy as no screw to back off to allow piston to push back. on the rear i un did the 14 mm cap from the rear of the piston while the caliper was still bolted on. The allen key required to unscrew the plunger is about a 4mm key. The 2 bolts holding the caliper are also 14 mm. I also removed the clips from the handbrake cable and brake line to have more movement. Once the new pads are on the manual says to re- tighten the allen key until the pads are just gripping the rotor and then back it off about 1/3 a turn.
Top tip: remove the clips that hold the flexi hose and the handbrake cable, disengage the handbrake cable from the caliper to give yourself some slack. Then remove the top slide pin, pivot the caliper down and then slide off of the lower slide pin. Obviously the carrier bracket only needs to be removed for rotor change (which you did) or if it needs to go into the bench vice for a cleanup. Install new pads, then put all back the way it came off.
I wish I'd seen this earlier. Took the piston out and did it from the front, I live and learn. Hopefully it'll work when I finish it tomorrow. I suspect I may have to adjust it but now I know what the back bolt is for. Thanks
lol, I couldnt figure this out but I remember working on my audi where I had to turn the piston so I thought, I wonder....I put a socket at the end of an extension bar and inserted it into the piston and just turned turned it right to make it go back in which worked lol. I think this video has answered my query as to how to adjust the handbrake and make it tighter. So im gonna loosen the bolt at the front all the way where the lever is, then tighten that hex key until the rear brake just catches the disc then stop then adjust the bolt at the lever to make my handbrake tight. THank you lol.
I have a 01 protege with the back piston u push and turn the piston u showed me a easier way to help release the pressure from it my was stuck maybe I won't need the new one I'll let you know good job !! Thanks
I have this same car 😅. I take the E brake cable off first . TAKE OUT THE TOP SLIDER BOLT . Then tilt caliper to the back with the bottom slider still in the caliper. THEN follow rest of video
This is a totally fab illustration, and your technique is a great way. How hard would it be to undo and redo the parking brake cable? I feel like the assemble could be put on to the rotor and then mount rotor and caliper assembly all at once. Did you ever rebuilt the caliper? My cylinder seems to be stuck in.
It is an adjustment, although the threads may not be visible. Possibly yours is at the end of travel or have stripped threads. The adjustment definitely adjusted the opening of the brake pad separation.
I ve just done the rear brakes on mine after watching this clip , but I cut 1 step out and did them the same as the front , still need the wind the Allen key in the back , back , undid the the 10mm bolt in the back of the caliper and it lits up , I also had to release a clip that holds the park brake cable , once I did that it was easy as pie

Helpful video, thank you for posting 👍
P.S - don't forget anti seize lubricant where it needs to be AND caliper piston lube.

mate you are a life saver, i was going mental trying to compress. In Australia we would refer to you as "A bloody champ!"
This took days to find. This is the first useful video I found to tackle this job. Thank you.

Glad you liked the video. I usually only make videos if I can't find it on RUclips already.

lol same here
Same here! It was driving me nuts.

Ronald Nightingale thanks bro I was wondering how I was going to put that Alan screw back on
Definitely helpful! But you’re literally doing it the hardest way possible by putting it together off of the rotor lol

If you turn it to the right, it will make your emergency brake tighter

Life saver my guy, thank you for the info

Thanks. We read through the comments and you have been elected a hero !
Yesss thank you my friend God bless you and your family always 🙏 ❤️

I am glad that it helped you!
Also FYI.. the 1999 KN ford laser has the same rear brakes as they are essentially the same car. Thanks for the video bud 👍
Thank you mate legend 🤙
Thanks very helpful, I Thought the caliper was seized!
Thank you for saving me the $$$$!!

Exactly what i needed to know!!! Thanks a ton!
Thank you! works on my miata! too bad i ruined the first caliper by trying to compress it haha
Great to here you were helped.
Thank you. The Allen wrench part would have NEVER occurred to me. What a bunch of assholes for making their brakes like that.
My European 323f doesn't have that little allen bolt at the back, so AFAIK I must rotate the whole piston to make room for the new pads...
Your piston dust seal looks cactus 🌵 replace it or rebuild calliper
This is a totally fab illustration, and your technique is a great way.

I feel like the assemble could be put on to the rotor and then mount rotor and caliper assembly all at once.
Did you ever rebuilt the caliper? My cylinder seems to be stuck in.
No I did not ever rebuild the caliper. Should be able to drive it out partially with the adjustment
It takes like 5 seconds to take the cable off. Maybe a minute to put it back in.
Do I have turn the hex screw back the other way or anything? After I push the piston back in? My e brakes not working after I put everything back on
What size Alan wrench?
Ok, I just tried this and found that the adjustment screw you are turning is not threaded... so it's not an adjustment screw?
It is an adjustment, although the threads may not be visible. Possibly yours is at the end of travel or have stripped threads. The adjustment definitely adjusted the opening of the brake pad separation.
I took the piece out entirely, it had an allen key head and splines, no thread. Very strange to me.
Ah, I think the splines engage with the real adjustment mechanism

Is 2002 es the same piston? On caliper or is it the one you use plunger and rotate clock wise?
Most likely. Just look for the feature on the back of the caliper. Also according to Ronald's comment below the 2002 323 had the feature.
What size Allen wrench?
I don't remember, but it was pretty small. I would guess 6 mm.
Tops
Does anyone know if the front brakes are the exact same?
No the front brakes are like normal caliper brakes, since there is no emergency brake.
Front Calipers and brakes are different. No parking brake on the front
I ve just done the rear brakes on mine after watching this clip , but I cut 1 step out and did them the same as the front , still need the wind the Allen key in the back , back , undid the the 10mm bolt in the back of the caliper and it lits up , I also had to release a clip that holds the park brake cable , once I did that it was easy as pie
my piston came out
