🇭🇺 you’ve never been to this part of Budapest

- You know, we live in Leányfalu now. But that's only been since September. Before that I lived in Budapest for 3 years, and I never, ever made it over to this hidden gem on the outskirts. Kispest, little pest, district XIX. More specifically, the Wekerletelep aka the Wekerle Estate. It turned out to be one of the most fascinating afternoons I've ever had in the vlogging game.
The bizzare, beautiful, brilliant buildings of architectural genius Kos Károly, a prominent member in the Budapest Szeccesió movement at the turn of the century, ring around a square he is named for. We learn about this famous man from Érdely in this video as well as the story of Wekerle Sándor himself, the very first non-noble Prime Minister of Hungary. He dreamt up this neighborhood as a response to the growing problems of overpopulation in the inner city. It was.a plan that borrowed heavily from the so-called Garden City movement which had been sweeping all around Europe and America at that time. The idea was to build hybrid, self-sustaining communities that would take all the best parts of living in the city and all of the best parts of living in the country and smash them together. Regrettably, this movement was a huge failure in much of the world, and the 'garden cities' became cesspits of drugs and criminality and violence. However, that couldn't be further from the truth in Budapest's Wekerletelep. It is an oasis of beauty in the middle of flat, industrial pest. Covered with garden houses overflowing with flowers unusual architecture, and most importantly friendly people. You can just tell that the citizens of Wekerletelep love living there. And I could certainly see why after this adventure. Come join me as we meet locals, learn some history, see the sights and sounds, and try some all too authentic Hungarian fare at the more than 100 year old Wekerle Resturaunt. A glorious day in May. 2022.
I've never ever seen anyone being this hyped for such small things in our country, and it's awesome to see that you love what you do. I love the energy, keep it up!❤️
Hahah Cheers bro
I visited this square by accident in 2021 and it was so beautiful. I had questions at that time like this place looked like a tourism place (Eger for example) but very liveable, certainly going to visit Wekerle again.
No wonder, Hungary got all that beautiful places ☝
wonders of being abroad
A wekerle telep nem egy kis dolog, Nagyon menő hely
You should be a role model for many of us on how to be positive all the time! I love your character. Be happy in Hungary :)
Yes, I agree. And he notices all the small things that we usually don't.
Thanks mate
"Gyönyörű wekerlei macska" 😆 indeed. Your Hungarian is getting better and better. 🤩 Keep up the good work. And "zsíros kenyér lilahagymával"! YES! 🤤🤤🤤
;)
🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️
Omg Willie, I love your energy! I am hungarian and that was really heart-warming to see how you value our historical architecture. I love architecture too, so that video was really uplift me ^_^ Thank you, that video was really kind and made me smile! ^_^ Never lose your positivity :))
Közönöm Anna 🐧
Nem vagyok hozzászokva, hogy valaki ennyire lelkesedjen ilyen kis dolgok miatt. Köszi a videót!
Willie, you're awesome. You're really smashing all negative stereotypes about Americans being ignorant to the world outside of America. Your humbleness and curiosity are great example to all.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Szuper vagy, Willi! It is very useful and interesting to present these beautiful places from your point of view!
🥰
I have been to Hungary so many times, but you have shown me something new with each video. Keep up the great work! When I can’t physically be there, I can live vicariously through you. BTW, your Hungarian language skills are great!
Wekerle is my birthplace. I grew up here, (XIX.DOBÓ KATICA STREET 69 / A). I finished high school here, it is in the next street (ZOLTÁN STREET), I can see the roof from the garden of our house. My mother was born in this house (July 14, 1930) and grew up with her two brothers. The Wekerle settlement is the only one in the world that was built so long ago and is still a living, patinated place. Years ago, UNESCO wanted to include it in the World Heritage List. Wekerle settlement is a real historical place, generations grow up in the same house. The proverb about the Wekerle settlement says: Happiness and happiness are born here, you can only inherit a house here because they are not sold. He merged with Kispest, the famous football player grew up in PUSKÁS ÖCSI. Thank you for showing the Wekerle colony to the World!💖
Take care☀🌷🌹!
I've just discovered your channel recently, and I love it. It's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And indeed, you show us how to appreciate our own country.
thanks bro appreciate that
It was a long time ago. I learned to drive a car here. The instructor brought me here to practice.
I just discovered your channel and although I live here in the XIX. district, I didn't know it had such a long history. Thank you! :)
Lovely video, good vibes and such enthusiasm, nagyon érdekes a te szemeddel látni Magyarországot!
You have one more subscriber now😁
Glad you liked my home"town" 🥰🤠😃
It was so nice to see my country through your eyes; I feel like us Hungarians don't have half the appreciation we should have towards our Home - this video was a nice lil' reminder to slow down and look at all the cool things we take for granted.🥰
Thanks for the upload!🇭🇺
PS - I never heard a foreign speaker nail the sound of the 'gy' letter as well as you - kudos to that!👌
I missed your visit to Wekerle my childhood neighborhood by 2 weeks. One of the best neighborhoods in Budapest. You did an awesome job introducing it to the viewers. Love your vids!
I love your enthusiasm for our culture, well done, we really appreciate it!
If you are looking for more Kós Károly buildings, check the Budapest Zoo!
"Gyönyörű wekerlei macska. Nagyon cuki vagy."😄 You' re super Willi.
Wow I loved this! Ever since I moved here I'v been wondering whether foreigners are able to see the difference between Wekerle and other parts of Budapest, do they like it - if they come here at all. It's like a little village surrounded by a big city. I'm so happy you liked it! As far as I know Wekerle is the only place in Hungary that meets Garden City Movement standards.
I'm impressed by your Hungarian, too. Just a note as you seem to be struggling with Wekerle vs. wekerlei: the estate and the PM it got its name after is Wekerle. Everything that is from/in/about Wekerle is wekerlei. Like Milano/Milanese (remark: adjectives uncapitalize the first letter).
Thanks man.
it's a great joy to see you having a good time at Wekerle Estate, cheers Willie :)
klassz a stílusod! érdekes volt a téma, sose jártam még a Wekerlén, pedig lokálpatriótának tartom magam! gratulálok!!!
Egyszerûen fantasztikus! Simply fantasztic.Congrats William!
Great video, thanks for sharing ☺️ I cannot get bored of living here 🌳😊
visit Székesfehérvár! that town has the most beautiful old pharmacy (fekete sas) and the Bory castle is amazing as well
and the bazilika, savanyú víz forrás etc haha
im glad you enjoy Hungary :)
It is worth mentioning that the longest and probably most popular Hungarian soap opera, Barátok közt (Among friends) which ended last year took place in Wekerle telep.
Thank you for introducing a small part of our Capital. You already speak Hungarian very well!
I probably will learn a lot about my own city from you, well done
Thanks for the great video Willie! Now I started to apprechiate our neighbourhood even better. When you come to Wekerle again you should definiately visit the Másik bolt and Post Balaton. You won't be dissapointed. :)
I've just stumbled upon this channel and I love your excitement and the will to learn hungarian.Keep it up!
Best hungarian content on the internet, and you’re not even native, well done gentleman, I’ve subbed
Nice to see other expats enjoying Hungary! I find it hard sometimes getting funny looks when I start chatting to people randomly in basic Hungarian (being from Britain we love to chat) but love how you just keep at it and do your thing! Thanks
Haha yeah it’s the same with us New Yorkers :D
Egészségggg!!!!!! Köszi a vidit!!!! :)
Nagyon köszönöm! Szívek: Yolanda!
hey Willie! it's nice to see someone so excited for Budapest, and Hungary. i am based in Budapest too, living in the 11th district for the last 5 years. if you ever want to see some cool sights, we can hang out haha. should you ever get bored of the capital city, you might want to come see the Balaton, where i grew up, and went to school. i can assure you, it's no NYC, but great sights, and natural beauty you can find, also amazing cuisine.
hope to see more of your great content,
Matyi
I would totally pick Wekerle telep to live. Looks so chill. Was it built in the era when they wanted to revolutionize/improve how workers lived? I saw this around the Cadbury factory in northern England. They wanted to create thriving communities.
No, this community was for the middle class. People who worked for the railroad, the post office, the government.
Hi Willie!
This is such a nice video of my birth place thank you!!!! I LIKE your reactions!!!!!😄
Thanks for introducing one of the the most beautiful place in the world😉 Home.❤
I love that quarter, sometimes I go take a stroll there, it has a unique atmosphere. Thanks for the cool video.
Truly unique part of town
I love your video. Zsiroskenyer hagymaval, great choice!
Agreed I’ve seen this on the map never got around to see it !
Great video, you should do a follow up video at a Honved Kispest game when the season resumes :)
My mother’s family came from here Willy boy! 🇦🇺
Funny how I stumbled upon this video of yours just one day before my exam on Kós Károly square! Never visited Wekerle estate before, though it's been on my visit wish list for many years... Also, you would really enjoy visiting a pharmacy in Szeged at the end of Széchenyi square with original cabinetry from 1906. (Széchenyi Bt. Gyógyszertár - Szeged, Horváth Mihály u. 9, 6720).
Hi, great video. What microphone do you use? Thanks
Just the go pro built in mic
Keep it up @WithWillie, cool stuff. Kakas is on the church, since for us - i am refomed protestant, 'református'- the rooster is a religious symbol. :) Come to Zugló close to Örs vezér tere to streets like Bolgárkertész, and the neighbourhood. That would be cool to show you around here. Very interesting architecture, bulidings and pretty in the city.. Drop me a line if you are interested. Btw I am also impressed by your Hungarian. Cheers mate.
Cheers dude
Wow its really great nagyon jó! :) Még itt vagy Budapesten? Szívesen csinálnák akár egy interjút veled valahol vagy online! Van interjú rovatunk nagyon érdekesek ezek a videók. Imádom a stílusát is és informatív is. So you are really informative and funny style at once, also really great to see that a foreigner almost know more historical things and facts about our quarters than some hungarians :) Really cool that you like this district so well! I live in the XIII district but i was there too in the 19th wonderful places. I am from Pécs but now live here in Budapest since this February. It was lovely to see your Pécs-Baranya-Mecsek videos too :)
Well done for your attempt at speaking this alien language. Very impressive. 👍
Btw. Wekerle estate would be Wekerle-lakótelep in Hungarian or simply Wekerle for the locals.
Well done bro. Sok sikert!
Hajrá Fradi! 😉😁
I go to work from the Kós Károly tér every morning.

Hello from Hungary
Well done again! I hope that you never get bored of Hungary
Egeszsegedre! 🍻
That zsíroskenyér was washed down quickly 🤣
Nagyon jól beszélsz magyarul. Van egy kis akcentusod, de az nem baj. Csak így tovább:)
Willie, u r great! :)
Not yet swallowed fatty bread --> Unicum shot --> huge gulp of Soproni... For a moment you became more hungarian than I ever been.
You really love Hungary😄😎

Hey bro!
Good to see you! You have to come to Kőszeg!
There is a whole history here!
And i can help you!
Kőszegen 11 órakkor harangoznak!
Annak is van egy érdekes története.
Obviously i'm not good at english, but if you want to visit Kőszeg,i'm here to help.
Have you ever been to "gázgyári lakótelep"? Actually closer to you than Wekerle.
Ez a videó nagyon jó. Ez az amerikai többet tud Magyarországról, mint egy átlagos magyar.
Been there 😉

You know Willie, I'm just wondering
This is about the 20th video what I watching from you
If the rumours true and you study politics and did your PhD from it
Become Hungarian, and if you make a party I'll be voting to you
Let’s call it the buli party
Aw man, I can't stand Unicum 😅
Jól tudsz magyarul :)
12:06 Már csak hegyeserős és a szalonna katonák hiányoznak onnan, paradicsommal, paprikával!
12:06 Only "Hegyeserős paprika" are missing and the bacon soldiers are missing from there, with tomatoes and TVpeppers!
Ügyes vagy, de beszélj többet magyarul, mint angolul, így tanulod folyamatosan a nyelvet!
nyelvében él a nemzet te magyar vagy.
Sorry, way to many selfies!
I enjoyed your video a great deal! Just suggesting, have a look at the XVII. kerület, discover Rákosliget, Rákoscsaba, Rákoskert, Rákoshegy, lovely areas of Budapest too.
A little bit different compared to new York, isn't it, @WithWillie (duplavével) :)
