Wow! I live in Miskolc. This video is just incredible. You told most of the historical facts and most about the famous people that were born here. And, your Hungarian pronunciation is amazing! And, you've comfirmed what I claimed many times. Miskolc isn't that dangerous, really. I am a 16 years old girl, and I can easily walk home at night alone for example from a club, without being attacked or robbed. So; I think that's just bad language. So...Isten Áldjon!
Do you guys also have like Rock Clubs there? Prostitution also is legal in Hungary… 😆 & then 🍷… Hm. 🤔 I think I heard this recipe already somewhere… 🤷🏻♂️ Amnesia already. 🤤 🍷
Thanks Willie. Your posts are invaluable to me in trying to get to grips with the fiendishly difficult language that is Hungarian. English speaker 🇬🇧👍🏻
Willie, Very informative. Few people roll through history with such agility and enthusiasm. I also liked how you approached a restaurant closed for the season and locked at the front gate, and in the next several scenes you're sipping glasses of wine with the hosts. Quite a fascinating, if not hilarious, seque. Keep up the good work, Steve of Egressy-Gabor
Thank You soo much Willy to showing me my town, which I left 12 years ago and haven't been back since I moved to Los Angeles. You brought back soo many memories, it warmed my heart. :-) I always hoped, once You will go there, because there is definitely much more to check there: the Barlangfürdő, Lillafüred with the Palotaszálló, Hámori tó and the Anna barlang (of course you have to go there with the kisvasút), Vadaspark. And if you close to Diosgyőr, Vén diófa restaurant and Kisgergely patisserie is a must! 😉
Kisgergely is one of the most known brands but their quality is not as high as it was before. There are places in Miskolc who make better cakes ("Cake of the country" too) and the interior of Kisgergely in Diósgyőr cannot be compared to the stylish interiors of the old confectioneries of Miskolc. They are not bad if you compare them to the most in Miskolc but at a national level I wouldn't rank them higher than "average" anymore.
Excellent video, you've made my day with it! Lotta thanks! Btw Mark Knopfler (orig. Knöpfler) has Miskolc roots, his parents were Miskolc residents. Grtz, Miki

Hi there, I just found your channel. I am American. Both sets of my grandparents emigrated here from Hungary at the turn of the 20th century. They lived in Cleveland. My mom and dad were born there. They told me that there was, and I think still is, a large Hungarian population there - which would account for the Cleveland placard on the observation tower. I never learned to speak Hungarian - only some phrases and food names. We kids only listened to the adults speaking. They are all gone now. I miss my Hungarian roots and so I recently decided to learn Hungarian. I will enjoy watching you, and will no doubt learn a lot. You must be from the United States? (As I’m writing this, you just said you are from NY. I have lived most of my life in CA). I would love to know more about your story, and how you ended up doing Hungarian videos. Thank you for creating this video. Looking forward to more! - Debbie (Kazsuk) Harding
Thank you for showing my home with such enthusiasm and care! I really love my city with all its flaws. Cleveland is one of the sister cities of Miskolc, like Tampere. At Hősök Tere there's a row of trees, each tree dedicated to a sister city, including Aschaffenburg and Kosice.
Miskolc, I was once there for a trip. I visited the museum. One of my teacher is from Miskolc. He Taught us Magyar Irodalom and Nyelvtan. Actually two if you count his son too, he taught us British English language. :)
Szevasz Willie! Szívvel ajánlom figyelmedbe Várpalota városát, remek hangulattal rendelkezik. Történelmileg is erős a felhozatal, Thury György védte a város szívében található várat a török időkben. Szívesen látnám viszont tőled egy videó erejéig a szülővárosom. További jó egészséget és rengeteg élményt kívánok neked itt a kis hazánkban. Üdv!
What a cool video of Miskolc, Willie! I just love your enthusiasm - and felt the same when visiting the city in 2016 for the first time. We'll be returning this year - I can't wait. 😉
Thank you very much Willie. I teach history at a primary school in Miskolc and I am very interested in the history of the city. It was a great pleasure to watch your film.
Szia. Azért én pár dolgot hiányoltam; deszka templom, plusz a Hősök tere, Petőfi tér, Szent István tér, szinva terasz, plusz pár szobor kimaradt. De ezektől eltekintve, nagyon jó videó lett. Köszönöm neked miskolci-ként hogy bemutattad.
Of course I did! After all, you said all good and beautiful things about our city, and people like that kind of thing. LOL. Hope to see you on the Kocsonya!
Hey, we are connected, my great grandparents came from Szútor, szlovakia. I love your enthusiasm and love for history and our ancestors. Someone needs to speak for them, you can connect with me, I’m here to help with your storytelling.
Great video! If u'll be able the visit the city again in the summer I highly recommend you Lillafüred. Basically it's a pretty touristic part of Miskolc because of its natural beauty but I would say that is the part of the city that stands out for me and makes it something unique in the country. I dont want to exaggerate it it's just a cool part of the city to visit Herman Ottó himself resided there (his lil old bungalow became a small museum about his life and his academic success) and József Attila also retreated there to write poems. And Barlangfürdő is also an interesting sight to visit it's a spa constructed within a cave.
Cz is one of the artifacts of written hungarian language during the centuries where protestant (german) and catholic (latin) scripts affected the church, translation, transscription, etc to hungarian language. They needed a somewhat one-to-one mapping of specific consonants. As of hungarian letters are to be pronounced only one way, latin written c can be c or k, so writing cz or tz would always be interpreted as today's 'c'. Also cs could be read ks (kx) thinking latin, so they rather used the written ts for today's 'cs'. Shortly: as latin and german languages were used in religion and later in law and administration they needed some consonants which could be read and pronounced only one way. Later as latin and german disappeared from daily usage, the simple c, cs consonants were used. Today cz, ts only remain in family names originating that era, keeping their original form, pronounced as c and cs. This country is a handy demonstration model even for language history. Not to mention the great language reform!
Great video, as alwasy. Miskolc, by the way, was a stronghold of the Rákosi-Gerő duo, who built enormous steel factories there. Of course, (as every communist regime) they planned on the agressive mobilization of the working class people, but after the collapse of the centrally planned economy, they (the workers)ended up being one of the braves enemies of the dictatorship. In 1956, one of the first fights took place in Miskolc! Never forget the heroes, who gave their blood for freedom!😢❤
Thank you, I really enjoyed your video. We hope to see you at Borangolás in May :) Pro tip: if you want world class pizza, check out Rossita next time, it is really close to Kisavas.
Loved to see my hometown through your eyes! Ohhh man, I used to go to that Zeneiskola at least two times a week when I was a kiddo. It was a love-hate relationship haha. Várom a következő Miskolc videót is! Pacsi ✌❤🤍💚

Seeing the blissful American enthusiasm brought to one of the riskiest places in the country sort of highlights the beauty of our culture, that self-absorbed intellectuals socialized in inner Pest, such as myself often overlook. Not to mention the surprising level of hospitality wherever you go. I guess what I'm trying to say is that your approach is an interesting contrast to the more reserved/scared/judging/paranoid etc nature of your average Hungarian. It's inspiring, because it goes to show that 9 times out of 10 it's get what you give. But I digress... I challenge you to go visit my birthtown, Cegléd. It's a pretty boring small town of about 30k people, your average great plain nothingburger, but it has its own charm of tranquility (almost like a midwest small town in the states). Seeing how insightful and infromative commentary you fill your videos with, it would be an interesting challenge for you. Kossuth gave a speech there, and has the largest calvinist church in Central Europe, but that's about it.
By accident I removed your reply 😅😅 but I got the message. I’ve actually been several times already. A bit of a home away from home. Even have ynwa tattooed on my rib cage 😀
That was very entertaining. After living here for 43 years I have still learned a few new things from you about Miskolc. You should have seen the wine cellars 20-25 years ago: there was much bigger night-life there at that time, all the local amateur rock bands were performing in some of those cellars in the weekends and the streets were full of young people. The theater on the main street is a very important building too: it is the first theater build of stone in (present day) Hungary.
Oh oh, it's the rendör :D But that's about the funny part, and let's take it serious now. Your english is impressive. Not many hungarians speaks so good english as you do. - From a hungarian ;)
The bad reputation is due to some problematic regions of the town and the overall poor reputation of North-East Hungary. For example the 2nd district of Avas with the crowded 10 storey buildings had a bad reputation about 15 years ago because of the availability of of cheap and bad quality drugs on the streets and there were a few deaths due to overdose there too. You can notice the same at the Újgyőri Főtér nowadays which is a central place for people from the poorest parts of the town (Lyukóvölgy and Vasgyár). The streets near the train station are similar too as it is a poor district full of prostitutes and pimps. Still I think that the town is safe (except Lyukóvölgy where they rob all the weekend-houses), I was attacked only once 25 years ago at the Újgyőri Főtér but never really felt that I should worry about crime. You were passing near the Fazekas elementary school, between that building and the courthouse there is the city prison where people are held for pre-trial detention.
Everything is relative. What here considered dangerous is picnic in another place.Anyway Hungary overall is a safe place to be, im positive on that one
@@joesmith4251Miskolc and Budapest 8 district and many other parts of Hungary were dangerous in the 80s 90s but since then they only have petty crime not very dangerous anymore. This was mostly because of poverty caused by communism and the fall of it
There is the Cave Bath there (whoop!), then the ancient blast furnace at Újmassa/Ómassa, the trout farm, the Garadna Valley, the Szeleta- and the St. István caves and the Hámori lake with the Palota Hotel and the waterfall… mesmerizing. Spent almost every summer there when I was a kid. Ps. Not to mention Szilvásvárad and the Szalajka valley with the Istállós-köi cave, the most visited prehistoric cave in Hungary. If you haven’t been there yet, now is the time. Now or never - itt az idö, most vagy soha! like the poet Petöfi says. Go for it!
The great-grandson of Latabár Endre was Latabár Kálmán, an outstanding comedian and actor. Along with his brother Árpád they toured across West-Europe and the USA in their young age. They were compared to Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Kálmán was so talented he could have been world famous but turned down all further offers from abroad and chose to stay home, performing only in his home country. He is a national icon, regarded as one of the greatest Hungarian comedians ever.
Thanks for the video.❤ Thanks for showing, how many hidden beauties are there in the town.💝 I was born here... Next time if you would like to eat pizza, try out the "Pizza, Kávé, Világbéke" place near the Miskolci National Theater. Amazing pizzas, coffee, cakes ect...🤗
@@withwillie about termal furdo. In Miskolc not only one termal bath exist. But also second is Selyemrét strand furdo . Summer very great time to visit this aqua center. Its 2 swiming pools , small aquapark , with 3 waterslides and 2 termal baths also

Hi, Willie! In the Communist times Miskolc earned the name: Acélváros - "The Steel - city". Do you know this song? ruclips.net/video/yHeCE-k-W08/видео.htmlsi=Z_Q4ENNEizdwEcgu You mentioned, your ancestors went from the Felvidék - Highland to the US. There's a very - very nice trilogy, Imre Oravecz: A rög gyermekei, it's a story of the partly "Tót", aka Slovakian, partly Hungarian people, who moved to the USA in the beginning of of the 20th century. Very - very worths to read it, a wonderful novel.

Willie nice video is always, Szoboszlai might back in the line up on Sunday 1-28 against Norwich in the FA Cup. He was injured for a couple of weeks. Edda művek the veteran rock band is from Miskolc also.
Hello, not Miskolc is the most dangerous city. Ozd is the most dangerous city in Hungary. I think you missed with the county , because both in BAZ county. And most dangerous county is BAZ in hungary.. BAZ - Borsod Abauj Zemplen megye. "CZ" was a letter in the hungarian Alphabet not so far back. But it is gone from it. Now the letter "C" is the same pronounce then it was "CZ". Letter "C" was different pronounce before. This is why you could see "CZ" on the old things or in Hungarian names: Miskolcz, Kurucz...etc
Hey Willie, good to see you again! Hope you are doing well. Wow, mate I didn't know it about you, until now. Please, stay and hear me out. You mentioned in this video that your Great grandfather and grandmother moved from the Highland, today it is part of Slovakia, to the US. See the possibilities! Could it be, could it be happened that the exactly the same Soul, that you called your Great Grandfather from the 1882, he just born again in that body that is you today? I mean, for first, it can sound crazy, but you can find out with Tracie Mahan. If you happen to know her and Dolores Cannon. But if it's true, that would mean that you came back born again and returned back to where you originally came from. Because Souls like you and everyone else always born again. You do not need to believe in reincarnation or anything just give a try and see what comes up. Just wondering, if you and that great grandfather from 1882 is the same... That would be cool!
Miskolc is a nice place, I born there and lived in the nearby town called Edelény (Edelény is famouse of the L'Huillier-Coburgh castle and there is another old building called borsodi földvár. The földvár is from the times of Honfoglalás 🙂) I love Miskolc and the other beautiful places in that area. You should check Derenk as well (ghost village with a spooky history) and Jósvafő with the tengerszem, and Aggtelek with the caves. 😊

Yeah true. And for the record I don’t think Miskolc is dangerous at all, but when you google “Hungary’s most dangerous city” that is what comes up
@@withwilliebecause of the gypsies.
I would take my chances in Miskolc rather than almost any American city at night.
@@joesmith4251Miskolc and Budapest 8 district and many other parts of Hungary were dangerous in the 80s 90s but since then they only have petty crime not very dangerous anymore. This was mostly because of poverty caused by communism and the fall of it
And then you have Miskolctapolca, Lillafüred and lots of stuff in the mountains there. Got to visit those when you return!
So nice of you thanks :)
Hello Willie!
Come to Székesfehérvár, it's close to Budapest (37 miles.) You won't be disappointed!
Wow, I didn't even know that Endre Latabár was born in my hometown of Kiskunhalas, what interesting information I can learn from your videos

Hi Will, Do you have any intention on going to Eger in the near future?
Hi, Willie!
In the Communist times Miskolc earned the name: Acélváros - "The Steel - city". Do you know this song?

You mentioned, your ancestors went from the Felvidék - Highland to the US. There's a very - very nice trilogy, Imre Oravecz: A rög gyermekei, it's a story of the partly "Tót", aka Slovakian, partly Hungarian people, who moved to the USA in the beginning of of the 20th century. Very - very worths to read it, a wonderful novel.
Wow thanks - that’s around the time my family came (end of 19th)
Wow you know more about my country as me, I left Hungary when I was 10

Welcome anytime in Miskolc!
My hometown 😊
U r amazing
You’re never walk alone, “Soha nem jársz egyedül”
These videos in Hungarian could give 100K views or spoken Hungarian with English captions?
👍👍👍
Home,sweet home!
Kossuthnak szobra van a szülőfaludbvan :D New Yorkban
Köszi Willie
Hey Willie drink some palinka..... .... vilmos palinka 👍👍
It's better & safer to just stick to the fruit, the pear! ...Vilmos körte 🍐
Herman Ottó az akasztott polihisztor?Mikor, hol,és hová akasztották?Bocsi😂
szerintem félrefordítás volt, a lényeg az volt, hogy "az utolsó polihisztornak" hívták.
Wow Fly Agaric! Küldj 1 pár gramm szárítottat magadból légy oly kedves! 🍄🤤
Should’ve went with the Longos

A magyar kultúra annyira ragad rád, le sem tagadhatod a magyar gyökereidet!
YNWA!
🙂♥️😘
he was hungarian but otherwise nice walkaround
