Great review and fully agree with everything you've said Dave. I paid BDH Dave a visit earlier in the year and had the opportunity to see him at work in his workshop. A great guy and an absolutely fantastic piece of kit. Ok it's not cheap but neither was my Direct Drive wheel or pedal set. Like you say, you get what you pay for.
Great honest review, I would agree with everything you have said. A well crafted product that is built by engineers / machinists who wanted to build the best for them selves to sim race. I’m glad they decided to share it with the rest of us. Immersion is a major part of the overall sim experience and can help for training in real life racing too.
Just got mine today it took almost a month to get here in Bakersfield Califorina. I still have to get it mounted to my rig, just been looking for good information so I can get it right the first time. Thanks for your review. I have learned a lot from wacthing your videos.
when the sim racing hardware becomes art we can finally say that our hobby, is now one bigger than the community itself. and that shifter is art dave, I love it and wish I could afford one of those shifters
This the best shifter have ever owned, have been lucky to be around the old fast fords with growing up with my dad it’s as close as you can get behind a monitor absolutely love mine!!!
I watched a Q&A with Douglas Thompson and the father and son team who make this shifter, 2 top blokes. Amazing shifter but it’s like you say, it depends on what type of cars you drive, 👍
When every shifter is handmade, no shifter is the same. So everyone who buys such a thing has a unique piece that only there have, even if they look the same. Round About 1000€ are not expensive for that. Thanks for a different "Simracing" video.
Seems like a very nice bit of kit, watching you drive with it though seems like it would mostly immerse you if your driving the type of car that had that type of gearing, whereas I think most folk will just be driving modern stuff that just uses paddle shift or sequential shifter, if you know what I mean, but yeah as you say if ya got the spare cash for some nice toys then why not. I like that your 'reviews' are always honest dave.
It looks pretty and seems like it's quieter than the Pro Sim unit. It's possible that the BDH comes with the perfect amount of centering tension. However it doesn't look like it has a centering spring tension adjustment. That was the main reason I upgraded from the Fanatec CS 1.5. The CS 1.5 centering spring tension felt too light to me and there was no way to increase the push to the center from left or right. This is a 2nd and separate adjustment from the effort to push into gear.
So many great Sim Products come from outside of the US its tough to have to swallow some of the shipping costs associated with that. But oh boy would i like to get my hands on that shifter. I still do not have a H-Pattern/ Sequential set up and this one sounds like it would fit the bill quite nice. Do wish it came in black to match my rig but the Raw Aluminum look is sweet.
I was wondering if/when you were going to get offered to take a look at this! I would love to have this, but I'm really not in the position to buy something this fancy haha. Maybe one day, if they still make them by then.
Ya I like how Dave explains its simply a usb controller so it makes it tough to justify. But the immersion and “real on track” feeling is something a lot of us go for. Enjoy what you have at the moment, upgrade when you can :)
That looks amazing. Is it really a true h-pattern shifter though? It doesn’t look like you have to throw into separate slots for all gears, but more like a variant of a sequential shifter.
It has separate slots for each gear. It was originally based on a quaife dog box from a mk2 escort rally car but then it was found out that the throw is very similar to a modern day mx5 gearbox which the caterhams use. They worked alongside one of their sponsored drivers in the caterham championship and got the throw to match that. No sequential possibility within this shifter (yet)
Looks ace, and a definite step up from the ole Fanatac SQ1.5,... HOWEVER... the thing that will one day bring the immersion is an interlock controlled from the game... Revs not matched? Lever won't engage to the slot & you'll get a nasty vibration in the gear stick... Clutch not pressed fully at the right time? Same. Obvs this needs the sim to support it, but I bet Simhub could do it, and this is what I want before I'll upgrade my existing shifter. The other fly in the ointment is that - in iRacing at least - the number of cars with a H-pattern is depleting.. The MX5 used to be H-pattern, but isn't any more. I don't think there are any at all in ACC. Only AC really supports a wide selection of manual geared cars... at least that improves the chances of a mod to support that interlock getting released. Perhaps BeamNG does too? Dunno, I don't play that because it doesn't support VR.
Just wondering if they make a modified version of these so I can mount it with the body facing forward - need it to be out the way of my aircraft throttle 🤔
Thanks for your thoughts on this shifter. I'm interested, but no trace of this shifter on the provided link? Unfortunate, I can't look on Facebook, due to unknown facts I seem to be banned??? Maybe you can provide me with a contact I can reach through E-Mail? Greetings from Germany
Was going to their page to place an order. I think you said 1850 lbs in the vid but up comes 850. Very do-able, also there was a place for a "promo code" on the check out page.. Might you have a promo code??? I'd be having it shipped stateside so it would help with the shipping cost. Thanks for the great review.........that you didn't do (lol) now I have to sell my FREX...
Too big for my rig, but I've tried to buy one. They didn't even accepted pre-orders at that time because of the high demand, but the price was more moderate as well. Got the Frex H-shifter instead and I'm quite happy with it since two years now. I never miss-shift with it and feels A LOT better and more mechanical than the Fanatec.
Looks very nice Dave. I bet it feels great to use, but unfortunately I could not justify the expense. Nice product review for a bloke who doesn't do product reviews. 😉
This is interesting. Wanting to upgrade the last bit of my rig that is really showing it’s age now (g27 shifter) and Dave, you might just have provided the answer. Brace yourself visa.
That's a stunning piece of hardware. Looks like you mounted it on the wrong side 😛 Hey, how about a review of the sim rig these days? It looks like you have some different stuff on it. Perhaps a "community" chat again? Thanks for the content as usual, always good.
Excellent Dave, I wasn't going to use an h pattern shifter or even a sequential however I'm gluten for awesome toys. So this is going to be added to my build list. Thank you non-reviewet of products. LMAO
Literally my jaw dropped when you told the price. Not that i don't understand where that's coming from. Very niche product, top quality materials and hand built in UK. But still, that's a whopping amount of money to throw at something that's basically just enhancing your experience with your big boys toy. That being said, if I had nowhere else to put that money, I would buy it.
Dave quick question, can you mount it on the right (in both meanings of the word) side of the rig? The L79 as all H pattern F1 cars shifter on the right.
The Shifter can be mounted in any of three planes and in either orientation on either side of the rig. Its also possible to switch the reverse gate from one side to the other.
Really cool product but at that price it's a tall ask for a shifter for me. As much as I appreciate the immersion, that's a bit more than I'd be willing to spend for a shifter.
Does it crunch and grind if you mistime your clutch release? LOL, Of course it doesn't, but that is one thing that would take sim racing with an H pattern to the next level.
I had this mounted on the right and that's how it was designed. You can choose left or right when you order, but it was just a case of flipping it around and reverse is now bottom right as opposed to top left 👍
It looks amazing but I'm afraid they lost me at £850 plus VAT. If it's the final piece of the puzzle then maybe but that's a hell of a lot of money for a shifter. That said I can see a lot of work has gone into it and it's clearly a quality product 👌😎
£850 is in the region for just a mid level wheel for the Simucube 2 system, so I don't see the issue with £850 for this if it offers a realistic and immersive feel.
@@slaphead90 Yes that also my reasoning. However, for me personally I would rarely use a H pattern shifter. Not many race cars call for it these days 🤷♂️ Where I would use a similarly priced wheel for most cars. Like I say the final piece of the puzzle. But look, let's be honest if I could afford that much for a shifter I'd buy this immediately 🤣 It's stunning.
My immersion would be broken when down shifting without using the clutch. I can't figure out how iracing works in this case. What's wrong with the transmission? Or am I wrong and these older cars were able to downshift with a blip, but without the clutch?
It’s hard to see in the video but the gate seems awful small for an “H” pattern shifter. Also at looked like a sequential but I did the the slight movement left and right.
Add it to the list of would like but too expensive items. Saying it’s only the price of doesn’t cut it, at £1000 plus it’s a lot of money. If you think £1000 isn’t a lot of money well done to you, it looks great and go for it.
Oh it's a lot of money alright. But when I used to be into my bikes I'd think nothing of throwing a couple of brand new sets of sticky tyres on every summer at £300 a pair. I don't think there's anything wrong with spending money on something you enjoy, no matter what the cost
