    The Lancia Stratos is in my top 5 best car designs of all time as well next to the Lamborghini Countach, the Ferrari 288 GTO, the Lotus Esprit and the Ferrari F355. I wouldn’t have seen the potential of creating a Stratos hommage in that Tamiya kit but you did. Bravo!

    Absolutely sensational 👍🏻
    Somebody once told me “You can’t make a Silk Purse from a Sows ear” ,well, obviously nothing could be further from the truth here. Your tool kit is as equally impressive to by the way. Tamiya really need to lift their game with what they turn out with all their
    resources compared to what’s being done here at home. Excellent stuff.

    • @MechanicAfterHours
      @MechanicAfterHours  3 года назад +2

    What a great interpretation of the Lancia Stratos, the Statos is such a beautiful car. Your workbench is so clean, you have inspired me to keep mine much more organized. Would you consider making a video showing the tools that you use, such as the soldering iron, files, screwdrivers, etc? I have purchased the Tamiya 8 piece tool set which is really nice to use, but I would like to add a few more pieces. Look forward to your next video.

    • @MechanicAfterHours

      Thanks, happy beatnik! That Tamiya 8 piece tool set is one of the best deals that's hard to top. I take it with me when I run RC cars because it almost has every basics needed and comes in that compact case. I will one day feature tools as that is one of the most requested video. However, I might just do entries on my website-still building it. Stay tuned! And thanks for watching.

    Really interesting seeing your technique drawing the design then cutting with the vinyl plotter. The solid rear axle platform and green and red colours brings back memories of my friend's Tamiya Grasshopper, at a time when I had a Marui Hunter with positive rear camber on droop! The Hunter was actually run over by a car and survived, the tub chassis was so strong on those.

    putting a cm or two length of low gauge heat shrink wrap around the ends of the cable braiding is what i do to cover up and prevent the ends from fraying more once i get stuff installed. nice work. also putting bearings instead of the stock bushings and a lower wind rotor in those tamiya RZ motors can really make them shine if you have a high enough amp ESC. i threw an old orion 13x2 in my RZ with a few shims to get it to fit right and a fresh set of trinity bearings instead of the stock bushings (yuck) and it really woke up with a hobbywing 80amp brushed esc. i have also tried the reedy radon that they still make, the rotor from the radon 15T 4100kv is a good upgrade matched with the beautiful RZ can. also definitely ditch those old style bullet plugs on the motor wires for new ones or some deans. cheers love the videos

    • @MechanicAfterHours
      @MechanicAfterHours  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching, k k. Thanks for the recommendation. I keep forgetting to buy large heat shrink tubes. Yes, there are times when I use bearings and switch rotors too since I have other (including older) brushed motors. As for bullet plugs, I actually don't use them as much if you watch my other builds. I just did for this as I just wanted to test the RZ motor. I think the Torque Tuned although slower is much more fun on the Grasshopper chassis.

    • @zkipa
      @zkipa 3 года назад

      @@MechanicAfterHours Haha, yeah I guess that motor is probably already overkill for this chassis anyways. But it's a Stratos! It's gotta be ridiculously overpowered! Absolutely awesome interpretation of a model kit I totally don't fancy. You again managed to source some very interesting stylish and rare special parts. The livery is of course fantastic, alitalia is one of the best of all times... also nice to see your workflow, going from analog with tracing paper to digital to physical. Nice. You really made something nice out of this... excuse me.... Crappy cartoon toy.... I understand the stratos analogy though, and gandini is also a very good taste... What I still don't like so much is the extreme camber and toe in in the front, and I think the a pillar window sticker should be thinner or gone. But the vid is again a highlight... I am always surprised by your new videos. They come earlier than I think, regarding the amount of work, and it's always a different car than I think. I am kind of waiting for 2 other cars. ;)... Thank you!

    • @MechanicAfterHours
      @MechanicAfterHours  3 года назад +1

      Hey Simon, thanks for watching! I agree on the camber. Unfortunately, I wanted a very lowered look with equal height from the back and front and there's no adjustment point on the front lower or upper arms (for now). Probably the limit of a beginner chassis. However, I might do some custom work on it in the future to have a more neutral camber. Thanks for watching the videos.

    Gotta admit, I didnt see the stratos hiding in the Super storm dragon. That bodykit always looked like a turd that melted in the oven at the tamiya design studio. Your version actually looks really cool. You dont often get this pleasantly surprised by re-design.

      It's based on the manga Radicon Boy and in the story a wooden dragon statue's skull is used as the form for the body. So once you know it's supposed to look like a dragon skull it's like "Ok, I kinda see it now" but it is still pretty ugly.

    Really enjoy these vids!, certainly inspired me to get back into building (and rebuilding) my cars!
    Gotta say, now I really want to see you try and to the opposite of some of your previous videos, and build a modern buggy in a retro style. It'd be AWESOME!
    Just a thought, keep up the good work and don't bother replying, 160 comments is surely effort enough, save it for your next build, legend!

      Thanks, O Dash! I appreciate the comment and time people put into it so I don't mind responding and saying thanks ;)! That's an interesting idea to try out and it did make me think about it. I'll definitely keep that in mind as I think it's a fun idea. I do have one slightly modern kit (well not that modern but from 2010) and I'm building it as a tribute to a legendary driver from the '80s. Not exactly what you're looking for but maybe halfway there. Thanks for watching!

    • @MechanicAfterHours
      @MechanicAfterHours  3 года назад

      Thanks, David Arbery! Hmm, that's a tough question as I don't have that many kits to know yet. But I would say for builds the TRF buggies and the Egress. For nostalgia, a lot of the kits in the the first 150 releases. But for something iconic because it's also cheap and totally fun I would say the Grasshopper with a Torque Tuned motor running on tarmac.

      Thanks, The OAG! I appreciate the words. I have to think about the Lunchbox, a friend just built one and I was just test driving it. Wasn't as excited about it, unfortunately. But I think it's because I still have an unbuilt GF01 which closely resembles it. Probably will build the GF01 first.

      @@MechanicAfterHours sorry, not critiquing you. It's a beautiful build. I built my first grasshopper in 1985. Brings back a ton of memories. I was expecting something better for the front shocks. I dont even know if that's available. More thinking outloud.

    • @MechanicAfterHours
      @MechanicAfterHours  3 года назад

      No problem at all! Totally understand and appreciate the comment. I looked into it in beginning but most solutions were too bulky or made the car higher. You can install CRP FX10 front arms or some 3D printed arms. I also tried multiple dampers and mounts for the front but never got them to my liking due to the increase ride height even with short 50mm dampers, or it just didn't look good for my taste. The only other solution to keep it very low was to fully customize it or cut the front arms and bulkhead, then replace with carbon fiber suspension stays, etc. I did see a guy Japan do it and it looks amazing. Maybe on day.
