  • This is a time lapse build of a Kyosho Scorpion (2014 re-release kit #30613C). In this video, I record my build and some of the body work in time lapse mode. At the end of the video I show the complete results of the build.

    Parts I used:
Motor: Kyosho Le Mans 490 brushed motor (30T)
    Gear Ratio: 6.9:1 (31T pinion + 38T Spur)
    ESC: Hobbywing Quicrun 1060
    Servo: KO Propo PDS-2513
    Receiver: KO Propo KR-211FH
    Battery: 7.2v NiMH
    Additional Parts:
    Aluminum short bumper
    Aluminum motor roll cage
Black front and rear Scorpion wheels
    Kyosho Scorpion HG wing stay
    Kyosho Scorpion black wing
    Traxxas "The Cat" driver/helmet
Kyosho Scorpion bucket lights roll cage
Custom LED lights rewired (Kyosho LED was out of stock)
    Notes:
I did set aside a spare body shell, the original chrome satin wheels, and tires in the event I want to revert back to the box art style look. I wanted a look that felt more current but restrained. I added a little exhaust element as well in place of the antenna.
For the top polycarbonate paint, it was a bit of a gamble to try and match the tub color since it's sort of a school bus/cheddar cheese yellow color. I use two coats of Tamiya PS-6 (Yellow) and two coats of PS-7 (Orange) to back it up. If you were to replicate this, results might vary depending on your environment.
The overall build experience was excellent and it was quite a pleasure. I think it was due to the parts and materials, and the fact that this is a 2WD kit with some of the gearbox elements pre-built. I would've preferred building those gear parts myself if I had the option to. The only problem I encountered was that the right arm shaft block came with slightly stripped threads. I couldn't tighten it enough and need to get a replacement part.
You can use LiPo and brushless on this but I wanted a bit of a vintage element by sticking to a brushed motor setup.
