Building an RC: Axial SCX10 III Toyota 4Runner TRD 1991 (Time Lapse)

- This is a time lapse build of a custom Axial SCX10 III Jeep JLU Wrangler Kit adapted to a 1991 Toyota 4Runner TRD concept. The completed build results are shown at the end of the video.
A very special thanks to Paul Willhite from Axial and Pro-Line Racing for providing the kit, some Pro-Line Racing parts, and extra parts for the build. Early this year Paul got in touch and we talked about the idea of me building an Axial kit. So, I can’t stress enough how thankful I am to Paul and his team over at Axial/Pro-Line Racing for giving me the opportunity to work on an SCX10 III. Paul, this kit is dedicated to you and the team! Check out their website:

I’d also like to thank Sheref (Reef’s RC) for sending me the servos needed (and horns). Their impressive servos are a perfect match for this build. This build uses the RAW500HD and a couple of 99:Micro servos. Check out their servos:

And finally, the Axial and RC crawler groups on FB for helping me out when I had questions!

This build experience was a favorite of mine and I enjoyed it a lot, especially because of the capability and popularity of the SCX10 III, and its transmission design-a 2-speed with a separate dig function. I chose to install both of them. And of course, the SCX10 III is one of the top crawlers to have and try. I like the quality of the parts and the build went smoothly without issues. The kit also seems to be a newer revision(?) based on some of the gears (doesn't seem to have square ends anymore for the pin inserts) and the servo mount in the kit I received didn't need any trimming.
As for the body, I always wanted to do a truck themed version of Keiichi Tsuchiya iconic old school Hot Version Toyota AE86 N2 TRD, and so I thought it would be ideal for this build. His AE86 is extra special as he brought the car to the late legendary engine designer/engineer Shinichiro Sakurai of TRD to work on. And in a sea of many Jeep crawler bodies, I chose Pro-Line Racing’s 1991 Toyota 4Runner body to be different. The body paint was the most challenging part since I’m not a body painter. But in the end, I was happy with the result.
I haven’t spent as much crawl time with the truck yet and it probably deserves a dedicated video. In the right hands it'll be exciting to see how it performs around tough obstacles.
And as always many thanks to you, the viewer, for the support and taking the time to watch my videos! Hope to hear from all of you in the comments section.

WOW Amazing job! - Reef
Thanks, Reef and REEF's RC! Hope you like it and thanks again for letting me use your servos for this build!
This video still amazes me a year later... And helped me make the plunge into building an RC car again. 10 years out of the hobby. and i'm already plunging into the deep end.
So… you’re an artist, engineer, cinematographer, storyteller and down right genius RC builder… congratulations. You deserve all the credit you get. 👌🏻
Thanks again, James! I truly appreciate it and thank you for watching!
Ditto what James👈 said 🤓👍👍👍👍
@@coool1672 Thanks! And thank you for watching.
I've probably built about a dozen RC kits in my life and I am rarely impressed by someone else's work but this build is something like I've never see. I aspire to be able to build kits at half the level of this man. Very impressive.
Man. It’s not just your artistic talent and creativity with these builds. Everything about this video is a masterpiece. Watching your videos makes me feel calm and content in a way I can’t describe. Thank you.
Thanks, Galactus Galan! Thanks for the kind feedback and glad it calms and makes you content :)!
i learned something new on how to trim the lexan now, much appreciated with your builds
Wow...just wow. The attention to detail is insane, 100 percent the coolest build I've ever seen . Amazing job!!
Thanks, Isaac Clifford! I appreciate the comment and thank you watching!
Holy moly! If this is available in a kit. i would buy one! Fantastic job and love the colour scheme!!!
Thanks, Hide Werx! I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
If your models look like this I’d love to see your daily driver as you have a eye for detail that’s rare
WOW what a beautiful TOYOYA 4TRUNNER TRD 1991 IT LOOKS SUPER CUTE👌
Thanks, Michael Tejeda! And thank you for watching.
The R / C you make feels soul. It's really cool.
Thank you, せっしゃなにヤツ!
Incredible. I absolutely love this generation of the 4Runner, and you have done it justice for sure! I am slowly getting to the end of the catalog of your videos, and almost sad. Looking forward to more. Cheers
Thanks, retro | reborn! I appreciate the kind feedback and support! Sorry, I haven't had a video lately, things just got quite busy outside of the hobby. But I'm finishing up one build and it should be up in a week. And still have a fair number to build. Stay tuned!
Great color scheme!
Thanks, E M! And thanks for watching.
Holy crap! You’re an absolute master! So beautiful! Definitely going to amp up my game seeing some of your methods!
Thumbs way up, love it!!
What a healing video. It dose make me calm and focus! Amazing!
Thanks, Roland Chan! Thank you for the feedback and for watching.
Welcome to the world of RC Crawling! Nice job on all aspects. Looking forward to seeing many more.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback, still learning and it's entirely a different and new thing for me. Quite an exciting genre.
Awesome build! You are just in a class of your own! 👍 👍 👍 it's a pleasure to watch you're doing your magic.
Thanks, Sergio! I appreciate it especially coming from you! You make awesome builds too.
As a mechanic I approve this message
Thank you! And thanks for watching.
Amazing work as usual. For me you're easily top 5 RUclips channels and I wish you nothing but success!
Thanks, Omar Rizwan! I appreciate the nice comment and thank you for watching! Take care.
Just a thought. Not sure if you do patreon, but you could release video of entire build at normal speed for higher tiers. I bet a lot of people would like to see some of the steps at normal speed so they could learn from you. Your work is amazing.
Thanks, JFK's Guns! And thank you for watching and suggestion. I did think about it but maybe one day-it's a lot of work to do two sets of videos and manage multiple account but will keep it mind.
F1 garage level of standard both in your,…well, just the execution of your builds and also always good soundtrack. Keep it comin’ man👊
Thanks, Paul Bell! Thanks for the nice and kind feedback :D and for watching!
Absolutely stunning! You do amazing work.
Thanks, Andrew Caldrewood! I appreciate the nice comment and thanks for watching!
So did you mix Ooyy song at 56:00? The version here is far superior to the standard mix. If you didn't where did you find it? thx again!
I did remix it using the stems, I believe there's some vocals and didn't need it for this.
…. A master piece, no much more to say.
Thank you for sharing .
Thanks, Griffon Wings! I appreciate the feedback and thank you for watching.
Very nice build. It looks awesome.
Thanks, theelmgren!
Man! you're mind-blowing! Keep up the amazing work .. keep inspiring buddy ✌🏼
Beautifully done, loving the vibe. 😎
Thanks, HBGEB! And thank you for watching.
That is phenomenal. Great work
Thanks, TABRAO! And thank you for watching.
What is great build !!!
Thanks, J. Alain Maheu! And thank you for watching.
Excellent!
Thanks again!
The best, thanks
*S U P R E M E P R O F E S S I O N A L I S M ! ! !* 👏🏼
Absolutely love the 4Runner! Also... you've got some cool kit in your workshop! Every minute was a pleasure to watch, damn fine work - Respect!
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words and thank you for watching!
Amazing work! I wouldn't like to know how much everything cost with all those upgraded parts 😬
Thanks, Stephen Griffiths! Haha! I wouldn't want to know too 😅. Kidding aside, the kit and some parts were provided to me. It's the only 1/10 crawler in my builds and maybe it's good to have one at least with upgrades than too many crawlers with none. Just my my humble opinion. Thanks for watching!
The only bad thing about your videos is not enough time spent on the completed builds! Add another minute or two of letting us drool over the builds please. Amazing as usual.
Thanks again, RadicalTurkey! I'll try to extend some of the clips next time. Just in case, there are more towards the end. Thank you for watching!
Skills 👏🏾
Thanks, Purple Lego RC! And thank you for watching.
I'm here to let you know that aliexpress uses pic of this car in context ads on facebook. Thumbnail in particular. I took a screenshot just in case.
Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it. I’ve come across other instances and sort of lost hope (and hence why I slowed down making videos and pictures).
What can i say ...yet another masterpiece 😎
HIs attention to detail is truly amazing.
Thanks, Dark Storm. I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching.
I love your builds!
Thanks, Erek Reyes! And thanks for watching.
Impresionante, Que increíble!
¡Gracias, Jorge record!
Awesome 🔥🔥🔥😍
Thanks, Станислав Вакульчик! And thank you for watching.
Love love love the build but one question why didn’t you use a hard body instead of lexan
Thanks, Hunter Shearer! I guess for a few reasons, I was given the option by Pro-line to choose a body that they would send and coincidentally they had this 4Runner which I really wanted to use. I also did a hard body on a previous build and it's very time consuming-and tedious to work on especially during the winter. I also don't know how'd I feel if I crashed/break the hard body especially after all the hard work.
What a perfect work! I thought i could make a build by myself but after i've seen this.. no way i'd ever getting close.. nicely done! What kind of screwdricer you using there? Looks like a good tool
Thanks, Nico! And thanks for watching. You can do it just keep at it! The driver is a Muchmore Racing Electric driver.
Stunning workmanship as usual. Beautifully filmed and edited. You Sir, have a very high quality channel. You inspire.
Keep it up.
Thanks, Scott! Thank you for the kind words and the feedback keeps me motivated!
great work both on the car and the video! love your tool sets too! may i know the brand of your black and red electric screwdriver please! thanks
Thanks, Danny How! And thank you for watching. The black one is a Muchmore Racing electric driver. The red is a similar knock off but it's from a local hardware store. Not as good or precise as the Muchmore one.
love this build. I was inspired to make one and I just finished it with my own twist. sent you some photos on messenger. thanks for the great work and videos.
I've just been getting into the RC world and blown away by everyone's details and dedication. This was a great build and that was definitely the right vehicle to choose. Your really great like everyone has started. I'll be watching more, keep up the great work.
Thanks, Bryan Trosper! I appreciate the nice words and thank you for watching! Hope you're enjoying the RC hobby!
I’ve been getting into it because I want to try to see if I can make one. 😩😭 I just need to get a better idea of what I need to buy and where.
Masterpiece ! How do you make the windows outline? Is it using tape? Or painted from the inside..
Thanks, jeffery. ong! It's painted from the inside. But for some of the other builds I do sometimes I use vinyl.
Fantastic! More builds please! Tamiya Bruiser? Tamiya F-150? Kyosho Turbo Optima? Associated RC10?
Классно получилось!
Спасибо, Aleksey Familiya!
Nice video, liked and subscribed :)
Thanks, RC DRIVER STUDIO! I appreciate the sub.
Wow what an awesome job it looks stunning. How did you get the red wheels to look so wide. Thanks for the vid it's awesome 👍
Thanks, Alex! And thanks for watching. I came across some extra wide wheels but it wasn't as easy to install. Not sure if it's good for true crawling, mostly just for looks.
Any chance we could get a parts list for things like the bumpers and skid plates? Beautiful build! 🤙🏻
Wow.. It's not an rc, it's a work of art. I'm curious about the size of the hub and the wheel material used for the custom wheel.
Thanks, Mi 7! The materials for the wheels are aluminum and carbon fiber for the face. The hex hub it 12mm.
✊💯 unbelievable RC work your car are some of the best I’ve seen. Keep up the amazing work 👌👍🇦🇺
Thank again, GAMEOVER! I appreciate the nice words!
❤❤❤
WTF buddy! Thats so sick, I want my 2nd gen to look like that 😵🙃
Thanks, Jason Foo! And thank you for watching.
skills
Thanks for watching, John David!
really nice work man. What is that small electric screw driver you are using? that thing looks handy.
Thanks, Ryan Brockmiller! And thanks for watching. It's a Muchmore Racing electric driver.
Yo dude thats sick! Your skill is on another level! Very brave to run/drive it!
Is that a hobbywing quicrun 1080 esc?
Thanks, EricsRCHobby! Haha yes I was quite nervous driving it. Yes, it's a 1080 and I just added a fan and carbon fiber cover.
Best 4Runner custom body I have ever seen by far. Awesome job buddy.
Thanks! And thank you for watching.
*Thank you for introducing me to a great car! It's a great video.~~~^_^ Thank you for sharing this great video! 👍👍👍*
Thanks, RC & 프라모델 / 서강진! And thank you for watching!
Nice share, stay connected, good luck further!👍
Thanks! And thank you for watching.
Love your build style! Heavy static modeling influence with RC as the platform. Just too beautiful to scratch!
Thanks, bcochener! I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
Amazing job, level expert, full of respect.
It's a pity that I can only clean ....... models not available in my country.
It is also quite expensive, and unfortunately beyond my financial reach.
Sorry........ my english is week.
Thanks, Jarek P! I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching. I was fortunate enough for some of the brands to provide the kit and parts. I hope one day you'll be able to get the RC kit you want. Good luck!
96 screws, plus the long screw that you have to use to get the wheels together... that's a lot of screwing!
Big Salute, you are the genius RC builder....watching from small island Province Jolo Sulu Philippines..kailan kaya ako mgkaroon ng ganyan toys?
"...The body and paint was a bit challenging for me as I'm not a painter...."
Wait, what? Coulda fooled me. LOL
GREAT job!
Thanks, mnmvuk! haha! Painting was truly stressful 😓. Thanks for watching
Great piece of art and craftsmanship. I love Toyota also, so I can appreciate that for sure. Those red and black rims are by far the best looking also. Not even close. With the krawler ka to match its perfect. More crawlers please!!!!! Trx4 next in a Tacoma 4th gen body. (3d printed). Would be amazing! Keep up the great work.
Thanks, sit los! I appreciate the feedback and kind comment. A 4g Taco truck would be fun. Maybe one day it can happen :)
Stumbled on your channel looking for Tamiya Avante build ideas before I start mine. Fantastic channel. Have you or will you do a video highlighting all the tools, fluids, etc you use? I see a lot of interesting items.
Im really enjoying the builds you’ve done.
Thank you. I appreciate it. The tools have been one of the most requested videos. Perhaps one day when I find more time
Hello. I wanted to ask you a question regarding the big bore proline shocks used on this axial scx10 III. Are the springs the ones that come with the shock absorbers? or have you purchased the optional ones (harder and softer) I just bought a kit for my axial scx10 III. and I see that the standard springs are very soft and the car is dropped and hits the rubber "bumps" of the shock absorbers. I look forward to your response and opinion on the matter. Thanks a lot. greetings and excellent work on this axial scx10 III.
Thanks for watching, Eduardo! If I recall I think it’s an optional set of springs from Proline-they sent me a bunch of stuff. I’m traveling so I can’t really check the truck at the moment. I believe they have a big bore spring assortment set with blue (soft) and red (hard). But please double check and look into it.
@@MechanicAfterHours
Hello, thank you very much for your answer. If I know the option of harder and softer blue and red springs. I bought a kit but really the one that best fits is the hard one (red) but there are only two, I should buy another kit. Please, when you return from your trip, could you tell me what your configuration is and what springs you have mounted. Thank you very much, greetings.
Man, this truck is beautiful, just wondering when your gonna mail it to me....LOL...😁😁
Thanks, Doug Roberts! Haha! It'll cost a lot to mail ;). I appreciate the comment.
Ooh, nice build. DK ranks as one of my favorite drivers. Makes me want to binge old videos of him teasing super cute girls wearing some of the worst bikinis I've ever seen. 😅👍
Thanks! He definitely is great driver and. I still watch old Best Motoring videos.
Can you please tell me where you bought that large box of assorted stainless hardware please. And by the way I’m ordering a kit and starting to build this exact setup.perfectly done. Thank you
Hey pete casano, the stainless screws are from McMaster-Carr. You have to select the screws you need and I just keep stock of them for my builds. Good luck with the build!
Unreal! It was like watching Frank Ocean's "Endless" but with an epic RC build instead. What is the intro music?
Thanks, Samuel Cox! That comment 👍 -FO's Endless is insane. The intro music is FOLLOW ME Wild Horse by Cospe.
Amazing work and detail. Wow
Thanks! And thank you for watching.
That was a real joy to watch, just as always. Very nice build, and the finish with that body was one of the best I have ever seen. Very well made! A shame you covered that nice HH motor, though... 😉
Thanks again, Mschdk rc! I know what you mean about covering the HH motor up :)! I felt a bit of that too.
I am not G@Y but i LOVE YOU...SIR...AWESOME work mate...! ~namaste~
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words and thank you for watching.
Next: airplane mechanic after hours.
Is there any possibility to buy this model from you ? 😉😂 because it is very nice piece of work… and I think that will work well on the trails 👍
Thanks, David! I appreciate the nice words. Unfortunately, it's going to someone at some point.
Super cool build, I got the 4Runner body for my TRX4 because of this video. I wanted to ask, where do you get that super thin vinyl you use for the door seals and hood?
Thanks! And thank you for watching. The tape is a Kyosho Micron tape and they come in different thicknesses
manatap sekali semngat terus temen hadir nyimak sukses terus ya kawan
Thank you! I apprciate the feedback and thanks for watching.
I admire your work. You are a great master builder. Your video is a work of art. I admire you from West Africa, the Ivory Coast. Good continuation.
Thank you, riicky verona! I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching.
Cool video! I’d like to have one too, it looks amazing :) good job!
I love to Watch your Videos! They relax me a lot. What power tools are using during your build?
Thanks, Alessandro! The electric drivers are from Muchmore Racing, Vessel, and Skil
i try to build the same ;) for now i've just finished the frame and 3D printing some parts to adapt the body with the original system of the scx. Painting is my next step! Congrats and thanks for the idea!!
Thanks for watching, Franck Auzanneau! Glad you're building one and hope you'll enjoy it. Good luck with the build!
your channel fcuking amazing, deserve more subscriber..im in!!
Thank you!
TAKE MY MONEY!!! hahaha Superb job! Please do more crawler builds, the fit and finish is just superb. You can really tell that you enjoy it by going that extra mile.
Thanks, Christian! I appreciate the feedback and nice words. Maybe one day I will build another. If only I had the terrain for it. But the excuse is it takes too much space haha
What makes the scx10iii so cool! It's fantastic.💯👍👍👍
Thanks, Qrisem TV! And thank you for watching.
Hi, great built again!!! Can you share with us all the tools you please? Thks Regards
Thanks again, David! Hopefully I can find time for it one day. If not I'll add them to my website in the future.

Great build and an amazing video. Like the touches like adding a few comments and photos at the end. I know those red and carbon wheeler were a bear, but they sure do set off the look. Thank you for creating and sharing this content. Thumbs up!
Thanks, Jeff! Thank you for watching and I appreciate the nice words. Yes, those wheels were a tad tedious but you're right, and it was worth it in the end.
