I found it really satisfying when the protagonist just started trying to break down the door when some one was yelling for help on the other side like any normal person would do instead of running off and leaving them to look for a key for a hour just really satisfying when a character realizes it's just a wooden door and can be broken.
yes but it was a dumb move since it made a lot of noise and attracted monsters. That's the only reason why they had the character do that was for spooky plot lol.
It's rare to find British folklore, and some old-fashioned Victorian chills, folded into a modern video game, so that in itself was reason enough for me to investigate Maid of Sker. It's set in the late 19th century, on Sker Island, Wales - not quite a real place in real life, but Sker Point certainly is, found just north west of Porthcawl in the county borough of Bridgend. It's here where you can, today, find Sker House - a renovated and now-private grade-one listed mansion (whose owners weren't immediately into the game's marketing) with foundations dating back to the 12th century. It's said to be one of the most haunted places in Wales (and the 38th most-haunted in the UK, in a 2018 list), where "screams, wailing noises, dark moving shadows and figures" have been reported. It's said that a resident of the house, Elizabeth William, was locked inside the building by her father, and there she died of a broken heart. She now haunts the place, supposedly alongside a sea captain whose ship was wrecked off Sker Point - and, indeed, the SS Samtampa was sunk there in 1947, in an accident claiming 47 lives. There are also reports of shipwrecks happening there in the 19th and 18th centuries
*Puts on glasses, speaks in Guys' voice:* "John, a phonograph is a device that records and plays sounds using a spinning wax cylinder. A gramophone, on the other hand, is a device that records and plays sounds using a spinning vinyl disc. Such devices later become known simply as 'record players'. Phonographs and gramophones competed until 1910 when vinyl become the dominant medium for recording and playing sound, though phonographs could still be found in somewhat common use for years afterward." **Takes off glasses.**
Also catapults, also called an ‘onager’ and ‘mongonel,’ is powered by the tension in a rope. Their size is limited to the amount and size of the propellant ropes available. They threw projectiles in the 30-50 pound (14-23 kg.) range, both solid and incendiary. Trebuchets utilized an unbalanced beam, a heavy weight and a sling to launch its projectiles. Their size was limited to the amount of material available to build them, consequently, some of them were enormous and were capable of throwing a small horse, say 500 lbs. (250 kg.), up to 500 yards (460 meters). A five hundred pound projectile hurled at a high-angle would be very difficult to contend with even today. They also threw cartloads of manure and dead bodies to cause disease, incendiary projectiles to cause fires and so forth. They were very effective weapons.
Gives the impression of "I wanna show off but I'm not actually gonna go the whole way (possibly because I exagerate my knowledge a smidge or am scared I f up".
@@Mintylight gonna be honest didn't get that impression, if that's how my comment came off then I apologize. I was actually interested in what that music might have been honestly.
It's always interesting to see a horror game that incorporates figures from history. While Sker isn't exactly a real place, Sker Point and Sker House are real. Elizabeth Williams is known in history as the Maid of Sker, said to have haunted Sker House after her father, Isaac Williams, locked her in the attic and she died of a broken heart. Thomas Evans also created a folk song for Elizabeth, hoping to win her over. Even more interestingly enough is that the area at the time was known to get lots of shipwrecks, just like in this game. Pretty interesting shit.

After watching many videos and RUclipsrs I think I can identify with you the most. What you say and do makes a hell of a lot of sense the older I get. Keep up the good work.
I was JUST wondering when you were gonna post another video! Cheers for posting on my day off, John! It’s always fun relaxing and watching your videos. Love ya!
I love how critical but at the same time serious you take those games. And I like to see, that you take the death of animals in games (and movies) close to heart. Your let'sPlays are one of the best!
Gramophone: Any sound-recording device, or device for playing previously-recorded sounds, especially if it uses a flat spinning disk. Phonograph: Any sound-recording device, or device for playing previously-recorded sounds, especially if it uses a spinning cylinder.
love that there's a game out there that acknowledges Wales and it's creepy folklore! The lullaby you frequently hear is 'Heno, heno, hen blant bach' which translates to 'tonight tonight little children' - thanks for playing this John!
I can see these kind of games a mile away. Nothing against John, but the “explore some building area for a couple of hours with minimal threats, a few puzzles, and DOZENS of optional notes to read with only a few character interactions” games bore me to death. I’m sure some are good, but most of the time, it’s just a monotonous slog. I think the only one that really interested me was that one with the harp and the tree people because you were going to different areas and had diverse threats.
They're all basically a bunch of "Anmeisa" clones...which was itself loosely reminiscent of "Resident Evil" and "Alone in the Dark" (the original game not the reboots).
The problem with these games are the slow built up. With games like outlast, you get into the thick of things within the first 5 minutes but in these games you probably won’t see anything till you’re half an hour into the game. It’s just too slow and monotonous for us to get invested and we’ll lose interest in it pretty quickly. The reserve would actually be the correct way to make a horror game. Short intro and get us into the thick of it as soon as possible. Then have the slow bits in between cause by then we’ll be invested enough to care about the story.
think this game is fine, a good horror game doesn't rely on scares but suspense. this game is more of a horror mystery as you have to explore and piece things together. you get desensitized fast if game through out scars at you.
To be honest, Elizabeth's dialogue is so heavy-handedly "fair maiden in distress, too pure for this pain" since the very beginning, that I immediately knew she was the big twist bad guy. Cause it's so forced that either she was evil, in which case that's horribly predictable writing, or she was actually good, in which case that's horribly excessive writing.
3 hours of John's humor and sass? Hell yes. Also, it's refreshing to see a horror game with high production value from an indie dev team. They did a great job on this one. Voice acting, animations, music and sound effects are all great.
Does anyone want to explain the whole “stay still when the piano isn’t playing” thing? It’s the most interesting and terrifying part of the game for me. Like, why be still? Why does it keep flashing in and out? Are the footsteps you hear Isaac? What’s the strangely lit cage thing in the centre? Why are there switches connected to it? What’s that thing we keep going back to in the other room? What happens if you move? I just have to know! 😂
How dare you question my life decisions John? Yes its three hour long and I could’ve probably watched every single among us video that has been posted in the last 24 hours, but for Maid of Sker, there’s an exception. I am happy with my life decisions, thank you very much
I would be so down to see John tackle thier other FMV games. They're all about that supernatural stuff, the unknown, quantum theories ect.. They don't overstay thier welcome either.
1:14 The answer to the beer tap puzzle is the illuminated paintings on the far wall, you can actually see them from where you're pulling the beer taps. Each tap pull has an image on it that corresponds to the paintings. You just needed to pull the tabs in the same order as the paintings lol. Also her family weren't cannibals, they were pirates. They would turn off the lighthouse so ships ran aground and killed any survivors to steal their cargo and later used the Siren to force ships to veer towards it. Elizabeth's mother, father, and uncle decided to use the siren's song to lure people into the hotel they built and then murdered and robbed their own customers. Once Elizabeth's mother died they had no one who could sing it so the hotel closed but ships didn't really pass by there as much anymore so they couldn't go back to the old ways. Thus Isaac trying to find a way to record the song and make his daughter sing it so they didn't need the siren at all anymore since they were just as susceptible to it.
John Wolfe is way too badass for me. Running into new rooms without checking corner or looking left and right. Never looking behind him. True horror alpha chad.

And I see that description, I'll have you know I'm very happy with my life decisions Editing John I don't need that sass
[slams fist on desk] agreed! we need more bird monsters in games! break out the harpies and rocs next!
ya there was a siren the girl you see on the cover.
Sirens had literal siren alert sounds.
And so did silent hill.
I'm not sure what you're asking?
Siren Blood Curse had nothing to do with the creature siren.
It was about a girl who was the blood sacrifice. And everyone was trapped in a loop
pretty sure the SiREN series has nothing to do with the creature.
"I'm in a bad mood now."
Recording: *HAHAHAHA HAHAHAHA HAHA*
Idk why that was so funny to me 😂
She record her self crying, she record her self laughing, hope she record her self coughing
SAO reference??
Wanna hear a recording of me peeing? I have 28 of them. 8 recorded in the morning. 3 are long, after I drank a lot of water on purpose. 2 very short ones,I did not even want to pee,but wanted to record it. I would love to exchange it to the recordings of you drinking or sneezing.
After watching many videos and RUclipsrs I think I can identify with you the most. What you say and do makes a hell of a lot of sense the older I get. Keep up the good work.

I absolutely loved The Bunker, actually in the top ten of John's playthroughs for me. So high hopes for this one!
I’m moving today so this is the perfect thing to watch in my new place!! Thanks for uploading John!

I did indeed grumble when you brought up the crow's eye.
Me too! I was like, "Yeah, I clearly remember the unfinished playthrough of The Crow's Eye. *mumble mumble grumble*"
wonder why he didn't finish it.
John: "Ooh. This is like...straight up a skeleton"
😂💀
"This will be a multiparter"
I feel so spoiled by John now
John trashtalking the characters has always been my favourite part of any of his videos
i’ve been waiting for john to play this, ive avoided literally every video and stream that pops up. may i say this is POG
3hr?! Thank you for your hard work, john, camera john, and editor john.
Absolutely legendary for you to upload this rn 💖 thank u John!
Definitely gave me Atlas vibes
3 hours, jesus, finally a youtuber who doesn't make 10 minute parts of long games!
Time to make myself lunch so I can sit and watch this monster of a video. Haven't seen it yet, but thank you for working hard to bring us this video.
I was waiting for you to play this game from last few days!! Thanks John , love your videos !
"The infernal singing is over." - John
But I like the singing.
So happy, I have something to look forward to after work, I was just thinking, I need a John Wolfe video.
"Ready to get clawed, Elisabeth?" Had me screaming w laughter
Dearest John. These are not words I wish to write. It's one of these games, huh?
John: "Doggy, I want to pet you, come back!"
Best line :)
me and my sister finished watching this from start to finish and we really enjoyed your video! :)
Yay I'm here after 8 minutes 😁 I've watched the entire game in that time and it's great. Thanks John
How dare you question my life decisions John? Yes its three hour long and I could’ve probably watched every single among us video that has been posted in the last 24 hours, but for Maid of Sker, there’s an exception. I am happy with my life decisions, thank you very much
This game is actually set in Wales based on a house in South Wales UK called Sker House. I believe this is based on Welsh folk lore
This amazing, was waiting for long gameplay to end the week and I get the notification, thank you!
John Wolfe profundity 2020: "sometimes my predictions are 100% on point - and sometimes they're not."
John: I'm in a bad mood now.
Elisabeth: (laughing)
I love long videos, it's like watching a great movie or opera.
John reminds me of a friend I lost who used to stream horror games just for me. I watch him just to relive some memories. Thank you. 🥰
Was it a guy who liked you? I can’t imagine streaming horror games for just one person otherwise

John Wolfe is way too badass for me. Running into new rooms without checking corner or looking left and right. Never looking behind him. True horror alpha chad.
John's content is the best! Said it before, and I'll say it again! 👌✨
Holy carp the beginning entrance where you see the grand opening and just above there’s a curtain moving implying that Elisabeth, supposedly, just peeked at you from the attic.
I noticed it at 7:41 , very subtle! 😮
