    Following the crankshaft recall notice on Sirrus 3,4,5 incl X models today I took my X3.0 to my authorised Specialized dealer in London (UK). They fixed the crank issue within half hour as per the recall notice. No charge. Don't believe any new parts were required. Just some checks on internal spacing and tightening of bolts to manufacture spec. Extremely happy to get back on this awesome bike. Will hit the trails again since it rides beautifully and handles superbly. Will update if any issues arise. Happy riding!

    Got my 2020 3.0 three weeks ago. The recall was addressed before I bought it and so far I have put 100 miles on it with everything working fine. I notice that the pedal crank has a warning to torque the attach nuts to a certain level. I also understand that loctite was also removed and reapplied. Now I know why the bike was available at my local retailer (lol).
    In any case this bike is amazing. The gearing and rider position is extremely efficient. I'm 6 ft tall and 180 lbs and I got the large frame. I ride 3 times a week in group rides of 15+ miles. I am just killing folks on the hills; even folks that have been riding for years and use clips can't believe the improvement from my previous bike. Just last week I decided to stretch myself and try a 38 mile ride (previous average 15) and I was leading the pack on a very hilly course. Plus I noticed that I never needed to stand up. I use to ride a 35 lb 18 year old hybrid which was too small for me. But it DID get me in shape. The 3.0 has 2x9 gearing which works very well. My only complaint (minor) is that I run out of high gear on flat ground. I could go faster with a higher gear but I just max out (not sure the speed) and start freewheeling. That's okay cause I'm not racing anyone.
    So far, this has been well worth the investment. Don't be alarmed by the negative reviews with respect to the recall. I agree that a firm like Specialized should never have let this happen but it appears they have it resolved.

    I just put a deposit on one of these. Due to the covid pandemic I have to wait a long time to get it into Australia. Hard to find bikes everywhere here across all manufacturers. If I find the tires are not able to handle the light gravel trail I ride then I will swap the tires. I went with this over the X 3.0 as I wanted a carbon fork and Shimano components and the extra gears. I cannot wait to get it in late October (I hope).

    To anyone buying this bike - there is a defect in the crank bolt - either the piece itself or the torquing during assembly - but if not fixed, the bolt will back out while riding and your crank arm will fall off. This is potentially extremely dangerous so have it looked at before you start riding it!! Multiple reviews on the specialized website report the same thing.

    • @TheBicycleRider
      @TheBicycleRider  4 года назад +3

      Thank you for your comment and research on the subject and yes it is very important to check the torque specifications and make sure that these bolts are tightened correctly. This is something that should be done on all new bicycles. Most of the time the manufacturer sends the bike with these pre-torqued but on this specific model please double check that everything is tight before riding.

    I’m looking at either the Sirrus 3 or Sirrus 4.
    Question: In your opinion, would it be worth it (performance and cost) to get the Sirrus 3 and upgrade components to, say 105s or get the Sirrus 4 with carbon frame? In California and have some hills. Thanks

    • @TheBicycleRider
      @TheBicycleRider  4 года назад

      I really like the carbon frame of the four. You can always upgrade components but a frame is something you're going to live with for a long time. The 3.0 is great but if you have the extra money for the 4.0 you might as well do it Specialized makes them awesome carbon!

      Well thank you for the compliment on the videos That's much appreciated. Seems like you have some choices ahead of you I do like the x because of the extra tire clearance even if you're riding on the road more you can still get more air volume for a comfortable really comfortable ride. I haven't tried to max out the regular 3.0 on tire size but I know a 32 fits with a little bit of room If you're mainly on the road and you don't have to worry about clearance for mud you can push the limits a bit.

    • @TheBicycleRider
      @TheBicycleRider  4 года назад +1

      Well that depends on what type of riding I was primarily going to do on the bike. If I wanted to do more of a road bike style riding in a paceline I would pick the Allez hands down That's an awesome road bike for the money! If I wanted an urban weapon to zip across town then the Sirrus would be my bike of choice. Flat bars are great for general riding and keeps you focused on what's ahead of you but you cannot deny the drop bar has the aerodynamic opportunities to get you out of the wind and also gives you several different hand positions if you're going to be on the bike for hours at a time. They're really two different bikes depending on what your main purpose is. Keep us informed of what you decide? Thank you

    • @alpeshpatel1451
      @alpeshpatel1451 4 года назад

      Go with the one that the most expensive one you can afford since the 3.0 performs much better than the 2.0 due to better components. Be aware that models 3,4,5 including X models have had a safety recall relating to the crank. Its a quick fix but needs to be done by an authorised Specialized dealer. I own a X3.0 and its an awesome bike that handles well, is fast nimble and can be used off road too.

    Important Safety Notification 27 June 2020 Specialized have finally released safety recall notice for all Sirrus 3,4,5 incl X models. Please check their website. Ensure you follow instructions to cease riding these models immediately and return it to your Specialized dealer for a fix. Issue relates to widely reported left crank arm / pedal coming off mid ride. Over 30 negative feedbacks on Specialized website. Glad they’ve belatedly acknowledged this as an urgent safety issue. Been monitoring this issue here in U.K. since May 2020. I’ve just taken delivery of Sirrus X 3.0 which is an awesome bike but now need to return for fix. Not pleased.

      I own an X3.0 and also tried the X2.0. If you can afford it the X3.0 is definitely worth the additional cost. It gives a far superior ride, is much lighter has better brakes and Aluminium front fork. Check the X3.0 has had the safety fix on the crankshaft before you buy since all 3,4,5 models were subject of a stop ride and safety recall notice by Specialized on 25 June 2020 for the crankshaft issue.

    • @keelansunglao-valdez475
      @keelansunglao-valdez475 3 года назад

      I have this bike and wondered the same thing. I did some research and trust me when I say that It would end up being a tough and expensive conversion my friend. The advent components don’t make a hydraulic brifter, so you would end up having to redo your entire drive train or switch to a mechanical system. So after cost of new major parts, along with things like bars, tape etc., it adds up to be about half or more of the bikes actual cost new. Even then, this bike might not really have the best geometry for a drop setup.
      I’m sure you can save some cost by working on it yourself if you have access to tools and sourcing parts... but the work and time that goes into it may not be worth the trouble - fun sure, but dealing with hydraulic and internal cabling... you may be better off just getting a bike that is already setup for drops. The Specialized Diverge is a close comparison that comes equipped with drops.
      Alternatively... (no pun intended) you can always try going an alt bar. They come in all kinds of shapes that provide different hand positions. Jones, surly and origin 8 make some good bars that can offer some different looks.
      Over all, this is a really fun universal bike. It had its infamous crank arm issue, but it was easily fixable if you choose to do it yourself, or your LBS should be able to fix the issue for you with a quick turnaround.
      I threw some alt bars on mine and it was more than capable on longer rides (30-50 mi). I ended up getting a second bike with drops that became my touring/bike packing bike and converted my Sirrus back to more of a lightweight city commuter bike.
      Hope this helps!

I do really like the x 3.0 but in your case you didn't mention anything about off road situations and with the 3.0 you get a little bit more road worthy geometry and speed. Both are great bikes ! The X models are way slower if youw ant some extra oomph. 32-11 vs 48-11 at the fast gear, like 40% slower at the same cadence.

    Just ordered the Sirrus X 3.0 stock levels been incredibly low in U.K. during pandemic, however just seen 12 recent reviews on Specialized website with same dangerous issue of left crank arm and pedal falling off on brand new bikes mid ride! All reviews seem to point to potential manufacture design fault. Are you aware of any such issue since Im now extremely worried about taking delivery of my £699 Sirrus X 3.0 from Specialized concept store. It’s due for delivery mid June 2020. Any inside info is appreciated.

      Good comment and just know this issue is starting to arise but the fix is easy by twerking down the bolts to manufacturers specifications. Most bike shops do this in the assembly process anyway but now that this issue has come to light I think it is even more important for not only bicycle shops but consumers that have purchased a spike to just double check the torque specifications on the bolts . Thank you for your research and your comment but don't be scared of your new bike and just make sure everything is torque correctly and you should be good to go.

    • @TheBicycleRider
      @TheBicycleRider  3 года назад +1

      This bike is best for hard surfaces. The tires on this bike, while fast on a hard surface, will not give you good traction when you hit a soft sandy spot. If your skills are good, you may be able handle this. I would suggest you take a look at the Sirrus X bikes. The Sirrus X bikes are a very similar, but with tires made for sandy gravel, and they will perform well on hard surfaces too.

      As far as I know and checking Specialized website recall doesn't relate to Sirrus 1.0 or 2.0 or X2.0, its the higher models 3-5 including X models since these all have the same two piece crank installed. The 1.0 and 2.0 have different types of cranks not affected by this recall.

      You are correct about the safety recall, which was caused by an installation issue. Any Specialized Shop should be able to fix the issue in a few minutes free of charge. I understand the fix requires using some loctite and torquing a bolt to the correct specs.
