  • This video covers the great things about this bike in detail, and tips for your next bike purchase. Mine is a prior model year & since then, Specialized Sirrus has moved towards disc brake bikes and a bit wider tires for most Sirrus 2019, 2020, 2021 models. They still offer a "Sirrus V-brake" version with steel fork: www.specialized.com/us/en/sir...

    If you want a carbon fork, apparently you have to now choose their disc model and that's looking like the Sirrus SL is the most affordable model with a carbon fork on their site (list $750). It's possible your local bike shop may offer you customization options like adding a carbon fork to a V-brake Sirrus. It's up to each individual shop so inquire within.
    If anyone knows of another similar model or something new coming out please post a comment & I'll update the description. Post any questions, and enjoy the video.
    Some have asked about the tire size, the stock tires are 700x30 - and the rim can accomodate a wider tire.

    Excellent review Keith. That’s a beautiful bike. I just bought a 2019 Sirrus (last year’s model). Because of that, I was able to get it for a little less and it does have the hydraulic breaks which weren’t particularly important to me either... But I hope that I enjoy the bike as much as you have. Cheers!

    Great review! This video is all anyone needs to watch while purchasing their first bike.
    I got a Specialized Sirrus last month for fitness as the gyms are closed. I wasn't looking for anything specific, just anything under $500. Paid $475. Rode it for ~100 miles so far and I think it's great.
    It's very nimble and lightweight. Pretty comfortable for longer distances. I've been on this bike for upto 25 miles at a stretch and did not experience any discomfort at all.

    It's worth mentioning in the 2x vs 3x crankset, that it does depend a lot on the gear range. Often times, the front set is wider-spaced on the 2x (e.g., 32/48 instead of 28/38/48) and so is the rear (e.g., 11-34 vs. 12-32 or even 14-28.) This can result in highest and lowest gear ratios that approximately the same. The difference is that there is less overlap in gear ratios and also less weight with the 2x. Usually, the 2x will be more expensive (at least for now), but it's not as simple as 3x is better for climbing. Most Walmart bikes have that terrible 28/38/48 + 14-28 set.

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  4 года назад

      That is an excellent point. I would say for someone that doesn't do their research the 3 ring is safer, because some bikes with 2 rings have poor ratio range. But you are correct especially with newer nicer bikes where they've engineered it that some of the two chain ring options provide nearly the same overall ratios which is arguably better and more efficient. . I think the weight is negligible on the third ring up front and one nice thing is there's very little thinking when you quickly need a low gear you don't have to worry where the other sprocket is set you just drop the front one in into Low. Thanks for posting.

    I went with Cannondale Quick 5 Disc for the exact reasons. for 2019 model and only year, it has the smooth/narrower WTB Slick 32mm combined with reflective strips. exact same Shimano gear combo as this one in the video. Noted by Keith, 3x9 is a must for hill climbing and speed on paved roads. for anyone looking for a new bike, disc is a must item and once you get used to low maintenance and high performance of a hydraulic brakes, you can't go back to the traditional rim brakes. looks like current trend to save $$, 3x is disappearing in favor for 1x11/12 setup to keep things simpler.

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  3 года назад

      Johnny, thanks for the detailed post and congrats on the Cannondale. I totally agree the 3 rings up front is so much nicer & useful even though the trend is getting away from it, thanks for pointing that out. The derailleur can handle it with ease and there is not much weight with an extra ring so no idea why the trend is changing. I'll never give them up LOL. And indeed disc brakes are great for those that want the upgrade. Thanks!

      I didn't buy a separate fork, I upgraded to the bike that had the carbon fiber fork at the time of my bike purchase. But nearly all bike manufacturers and bike shops have parts you can order from the maker. But you wouldn't need a Specialized one if you can't find it, any good carbon fork should do. your local bike shop should be able to help. You might want to test ride a couple bike with the carbon fork first to see if you can feel a difference. For me it's substantial. Thanks

    Hi Keith, great video! Thorough review and a nice insight into this bike.
    I’ve been eyeing some Sirruses from 2019/2020. Carbon fork and hydraulic disc brakes.
    Have the same question as the feller earlier. Seems like a large would be good for me, I’m almost 5ft 10” (182 cm) measured barefoot.
    But your just slightly shorter, could you describe the feel of the size and what would make a large too big?
    Again, great video!
    Greetings from Sweden :)

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  4 года назад +1

      Jesper, greetings from the USA & glad you liked the video. It's really best to get sized up at a local bike shop. You aren't that much taller than I am, so it's still possible a Medium would work for you. When a bike is too large, you'll find yourself stretching to reach the handlebars and the frame will be higher in your crotch area of your pants (especially on road bikes because of the frame orientation, this is less noticeable on a hybrid). With a longer frame the handlebars are further away and you might feel like you are leaning over more to reach them rather than riding in a sitting position. On a road bike, you are naturally leaning over even on a smaller bike as that's how road bikes are normally designed (this is also because of the dropped position handlebars). Also a larger frame does add weight! If you can ride a few locally and get a bike shop's opinion that is best, otherwise if you feel like you're in between a medium & large then I might go with the medium to save weight, since you and I are almost the same size. A Medium is totally right for me in this bike, I'm nowhere near needing a large. Hope this helps.

  • @gregjobes9138
    @gregjobes9138 4 года назад

    IDK about what you're saying to do with the 3 by setup, a lot of mountain bikes now days are actually moving to 1X11 or 1X12. The technology is better today and they can get a wider gear range with less gears. Many of the gears in a traditional 3 by setup are redundant, almost copies of other gears.
    I just purchased the 2019 Sirrus Sport, with the disc brakes. It's an amazing bike so far, only had it for a few days. But it will get worked as I use a bike as my only form of transport. I added full coverage fenders, a rear rack and some panniers. Even with all the extra's added on it still seems much lighter than my 2015 Giant Trance MTB.

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  4 года назад +1

      Hi Greg, it's a preference. And this conversation reminds me of when I was a teen and would swap out rear sprockets to get more speed even if a few teeth smaller. So here's the thing - some mountain bike manufacturers are going with 1 or 2 chainrings up front to increase clearance over terrain. To go over a boulder or log for example. a larger chainring can get in the way. But you give up gear range for that. For someone doing that heavy hardcore mountain biking then the Sirrus is probably the wrong bike. Yes you are correct there is redundancy in a 3 chainring crank, but it is not correct that you can get a wider range of gears with less gears. What I mean is if I have a larger gear up front than you and equal size smallest gear in the back, my bike is going to be faster than yours. Period. Likewise if I have a tiny 3rd chainring up front and we have the same size lowest gear in the rear, my bike is going to pedal easier than yours up the biggest hills. Yes there is redundancy, but's it's the far end of both ranges that can't be disputed., and that's what I see as the value with the 3rd ring. And again what's the harm in a 3rd chainring, the derailleurs can handle it and it's less than on ounce in weight. Thanks.

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  4 года назад +1

      Not sure about he provision but swapping them for disc also means getting new hubs or rims... I'd say if you want disc brakes get them on the bike you are purchasing now it will probably be cheaper in the long run.

    Hi, nice bike I have just one comment narrow tier don't have to mean that they are faster than a bigger tire of the same model that you have on the bike. Bigger tire have an advantage that you can run them on less pressure and eliminate buzz from road .

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  4 года назад

      hi Jan, im not sure i would agree. its about rolling resistance. thinner tires have much less rolling resistance via less friction with thr ground. I have personally seen this to be true riding next to people on the road on my Sirrus, those with mountain bikes and fat tires have to work harder to achieve my speed. also true with coasting. Think sbout it - all the racing road bikes (Tour de France, etc) have the super thinnest tires. Thats for speed. Have a good day.

      Disc brakes have more stopping power, and grip better when wet, also hydraulic disc brakes to me have a much better feel than V-Brakes. Also with a disc brake you can change the rotor size at adjust your braking power.

    • @KeithBlade
      @KeithBlade  2 года назад +1

      Hi Paul thanks - yes I still own this bike and I'm heading out shortly for a ride today 😀. I'm still very happy with it and would buy it again. I'm not super familiar with the 3.0 but usually as they go up in price they get even better. Specialized had gone to slightly wider tires since I bought mine, I think most of them come with at least 32mm now which is probably a good thing. If you can't get their new suspension stem on your model, there are some great aftermarket options that I'm planning on doing a review about soon. These suspension stems smooth the ride big time and negate the need for a carbon fork.

      @@p-dub7422 I guess I was one of the lucky ones and got the Sirrus Sport Elite when it was available, a less common submodel, and it included a Specialized fork from the factory as far as I can tell. I got it brand new from the bike shop and the fork was already on it. The 3.0 looks like a nice bike but I would read the reviews, I pulled it up on Specialized site and it's only got a 2.8 out of 5 stars, shockingly. I'm not sure why but maybe read the reviews and see if there's something up with that model. I honestly after all this time can't find anything wrong with mine.

      hi Soc1100 thanks for your comments. I think the model year on mine is a 2016 or 2017 but I am not sure and was not able to verify either way because I can't find it anywhere online. But they haven't changed much since, I can tell you it's mostly different paint on these bikes with only minor differences compared to prior years. Looking at Specialized website the 2019 model seems to have a slightly different Shimano derailleur set and a steel fork. Seems like you have to now get disc brakes to get a carbon fork, but I've found sometimes the dealers have more models available than what is on Specialized's website & they're usually happy to break out a catalog & tell you all the options available or even order you a different fork. I have heard that the Elite submodel (mine) throws in 1 extra gear in the back hub, fender mounts, and in-tube cabling (where the cables go into the frame, kinda nice). And yes the V brakes are really nice, I never have to mess with them. The Small (S) frame model weighs 23.5 pounds, I think mine (M) is 24.5 pounds for the entire bike complete, if that helps. That's what my old notes say from when I bought the bike at the shop but I couldn't verify that info online. I think it's pretty accurate though. Hope this helps ya!

      Tires are made by Specialized and says Espoir 700x30C and in brackets (30x622). The rim size is stock 622x15. They also have a highly reflective whitewall ring on each side which is nice for safety at night. If you are going to spend more time on trails and off-road I would recommend a slightly more knobby or more aggressive tire. If you're going to be on roads mostly stick with these because they are great you can go really fast and they can still handle some dirt and mild trails

      Yes you have to remove the front tire. I can fit my Specialized in the cabin of a Honda Accord with the wheel off. It depends on the type of axle you have but normally removing the wheel is quite easy. There are a couple of safety precautions, so you might want to take a photo of your front wheel and visit your local bike shop, they will be happy to demonstrate on one of their bikes how to remove the front rim. The entire process takes less than 1 minute.

These bolts are high up on these tubes almost near the seat clamp. Then there are two empty threaded ports on each side of the frame at the rear hub (on the frame once again), for a total of four threaded ports. obviously something is meant to mount here, could be for fenders or a seat - I am not sure. Perhaps the seat manufacturer may have a list of compatible bikes otherwise try emailing Specialized and see if they can give more info on these screw ports. Thanks.
