I SHOULD NEVER HAVE PAINTED THIS (or sold it)! Stripping paint from mid century teak

  • Look, we all start somewhere. This piece has haunted me for FOUR years. I was just starting out in the flipping for profit business when I did this piece. I bought it for $50 from Facebook marketplace from someone's rec room. I obviously knew it was mid century. But I should have done my research. Better research. I frikkin painted it white and while, sure, it was beautiful... I shouldn't have brought a brush anywhere near this piece.
I was in a financial bind when I sold it, even though I realllllly wanted to keep it. I told the new buyer if she EVER wanted to sell it, please let me know. Well, hold on to yer butts, she wrote me about 2 months ago and said they were renovating and she no longer had a place for it. I bought it immediately, for about 50 bucks less than I paid for it.
I know so much more than I did back then. This is a fairly rare sideboard by Sven Andersen. I am keeping this forever! But I need to try to get it back as close to original as I can. I need to strip off my own paint job.
I learned a few years back the importance of researching a piece prior to any modifications/refinishing. To be honest, it doesn't matter WHAT the piece is, if you want to change it badly enough, you're gonna do it. lol I'm making myself vulnerable here in the hopes that this story will make you just pause, and double check that you aren't doing something you might later regret! But at the end of the day...it IS only furniture. Don't beat yourself up (or a total stranger, over a piece of furniture you've never owned or WILL own). Just learn. I keep saying in these videos that when you know better, DO better!
    Much love!

Hon I'm 56, and "mid-century" to me means "old stuff that was in everyone's finished basement when I was a kid." As long as it's not some kind of collector's item, do whatever you want with it. I'm still getting used to the fact that "mid-century" is even a thing!

Don’t beat yourself up. You didn’t make a mistake 4 years ago by painting the credenza. You did your best with the knowledge and skill you had at that time. We are all here on this earth to learn and help each other. I truly appreciate you sharing your refinishing and restoration skills on RUclips.

Absolutely beautiful, as usual. I think you’re being way too hard on yourself. Everything you do is done with utmost care and always looks beautiful whether painted or restored.

As a Dane with tremendous love for our Danish heritage manifested in mid century modern furniture, this really really warmed my heart to see. I own many pieces of classic Danish furniture including some Andersen ones all passed down from greatgrams to grams to my father and then to me when he passed. You definitely restored it back to its glory, and I think you should be so very proud. It's gorgeous. Lots of love ❤️ xx

We get so few opportunities to correct past mistakes. I'm so happy you got to re-work this piece and restore it to a condition that you're happy with. Beautiful work, as always! <3

Gurl. You obviously care about quality, detail and preservation. Enough to think through, learn and experiment with techniques. I've learned so much from you so please don't beat yourself up. Not a single piece you've done has been anything less than amazing. I'm not even a fan of MCM. I just like make over, restoration and woodworking videos but I'm addicted to your videos so be proud of yourself.

Great customer who followed through with the option to buy the piece back. It's a happy story. You will always remember the difficult time and how you have become a success, with this piece. This lovely credenza is rightfully in a special place in your home. The extra time you have taken really shows in the final reveal.

The white was lovely, but the restored piece is a knockout! Love it

This was so interesting to watch. Since I live in Scandinavia, we are flooded by these kinds of furniture and about 10 years ago the whole country decided to paint them white, I think. I can only imagine all the people trying to bring the furniture back to the original now.

That you had the forethought to ask to buy-back…..commendable. That you restored back so passionately……beyond commendable. Thanks for the love you put into your art.

Gorgeous furniture and your incredible talent aside, I applaud your "gentle rant". To hear someone say "please be kind" and "just be nice" nearly brought tears to my eyes. Love your videos, keep up your excellent work and your soul soothing ways. The world is a better place with you in it.

The “before” piece was beautiful. The”after” is stunning and gorgeous! I enjoyed seeing it in its home in your dining area, too. Paint is mostly a reversible process and some pieces need to be painted to save them. I’m glad you shared your thoughts on that and I’m sorry you and others are getting grief about painting furniture. I love watching your channel for the content. Whether you restore a piece or use a paint and wood combo or paint an entire piece, I learn something every time. I am grateful you do this for us, Angie.🌸

Both versions are beautiful. It’s a shame people have made you feel like you need to justify your choices. You have a great eye for what will make a beautiful piece. To paint or not to paint is up to you.

Gorgeous! I think the two tones on the drawers and legs is nice when you can see the mahogany inside! I’m not drawn to that look normally, but you really capitalized on the different tones of the wood species used in this piece. It works really well! I found the white way too stark a contrast and this new look is so warm and beautiful. I learn so much from you - thanks for sharing so much of your process. I love that you were able to apply your own learning to this piece and make it perfect for your home. ❤️

Definite thumbs up. I’m on the side that it’s ok really to paint anything. Like you said, it’s just furniture. And you kind of confirmed that it’s not the end of the world if you paint something valuable. It can be stripped. Great job as always!
