  • I found this vintage buffet on Facebook Marketplace for $80 while on vacation in rural Illinois. I wanted to see what it would be like to paint something outside of my normal environment so I brought it back to get a furniture makeover in black. Not everything went as planned but I got it figured out in the end! Check out more on the Surf Prep sanding system here or buy supplies. I get a kickback for your purchases: bit.ly/surfprep
Purchases made from the above links and sponsorships such as SurfPrep give me money in return for promoting their products. Your support helps me continue to grow my channel. Thank you!

This is awesome. That piece is almost identical to the one I had for a few decades, except mine also had the hutch. Even the hardware is the same. I hated it and was ready to get rid of it. I wasn't confident about painting it, but since I was ready to get rid of it, I felt I had nothing to lose. I also painted it black...and I just love it.
It does my heart good to see old 'throw-aways' brought to a new life that will carry on for another couple decades.
I feel ashamed that I was ready to turf this lovely piece when all it needed was a little love.

The original piece had a china cabinet on top. The label on the back said "buffet base". Manufactured by Hale furniture company. This piece came from the 70s according to my research before I painted this piece, had mounting brackets on the back for the original china cabinet that went on top and measured something like 25" tall. It is way too short to be used as a dresser.

I've found that any piece of furniture made with actual wood using real fasteners is a candidate for a makeover that's worth your time and effort as long as it's not rotted or warped. Even SOME particle board and wafer board CAN be worth it, as long as it's not something you're going to have to spend a lot of time on. I've found a few case goods that were actual wood construction, but had particle board doors and shelves. Removing those components and filling in the holes left by the hardware were exactly what those items needed, and sure saves on time and materials!
I started doing faux finishes at my mother's knee in the 1970s when she "antiqued" our entire kitchen/dining room trim and built-ins with avocado green and "antiquing stain". I was about 10. My Grandpa was an architect and cabinet maker, so wood splinters are in my DNA. I find your content to be like putting on a comfy pair of slippers. It's nice to see this sort of craftsmanship hasn't died out.
