I have been in the residential, commercial & industrial construction trades including painting for 35 years. I have had my own restoration company for 8 of those years mainly as far as painting doing residential. I don't own a sprayer and never have sprayed except out of a spray can. I am a brush & roll guy and that's the way I like it. I personally don't like that so called "Factory" finish. It looks fake to me and looks like a robot did it instead of someone's hands. I like craftsmanship. When I look at something that has been built or even painted I want to see the detail of knowing someone spent the time with their hands and know-how along with their experienced craftsmanship in building something and not looking at it thinking it was put together in a factory and had that fake factory look and feel to it. What you did here was absolutely beautiful, and you did it without a sprayer. Keep up the good work. You are amazing!

A tip I just saw on a video-I tried it out and it worked! Place a thin nylon knee high or one of the booties they have for trying on shoes, over a foam brush-pull snug. Brush on acrylic topcoat. For some reason the nylon stops the bubbles created when using polyacrylic. It was a very smooth finish.

OH MY GOODNESS, SO GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO! I literally work out in the field all the time, and never have time to do those 'projects I'd like to get done’ things done.
I have so many of those I'm keeping that for a project items around, that now those project ideas and items have gone from days to years. Yet the furniture remains the same, Led Zep pun ha-ha. But for me, it's true, the items do remain, like in my garage, just collecting and waiting. THEN, some free time comes. A couple days off, a vacation, etc., and my 'now I can get it done thinking' begins. So I start my research, and before you know it, I end up exhausted watching too many videos, seeing too much info, on 'best this' or 'best that', AND before you know it, I've spent MORE TIME researching, even purchasing materials to do these projects, and I don't get anything done, and the time keeps slipping away.
It's like it takes MORE time to find the BEST way for yourself & what works for you, than ACTUALLY getting the project completed. You spent roughly 4 hours time on getting this piece done and for that I say wow, incredible! The piece looks well done, beautiful and gorgeous! I wish I could get back a lot more hours than that of my time done on researching how to paint furniture. So, now it’s September 2022, and I’m googling again. From search terms like black stain, to can I turn any furniture piece black, to quickest way to paint furniture black. And then I find your precious gem, pearl of wisdom video in RUclips by searching black stain no sanding bedroom furniture. HIP, HIP HOORAY! YOU and this easy to follow video have inspired me, once again ha-ha, with a sense of renewal, vigor & determination to get these much overdue projects done once and for all. Thank you so much for putting this awesome information out there. You are a blessing. PS - I too have chalk painted, one time - my bed. It came out gorgeous - high dollar looking, lots of compliments, etc., but man it was a process, and lots of cleanup afterwards too.
I really want to thank you for this. I have little to no experience painting furniture and have a project in mind that involves obtaining and matching paints to existing items. I had no idea how to do this but after watching this video and then checking local SW retailers I have discovered that everything I need is right here. You put a lot of work into producing this and I truly thank you.
A few years ago, we started little projects around the house. We have a 47-year old Thomasville dresser. It is extremely heavy & in great condition. The only problem is the old yellowish-brown finish. You have inspired me to re-finish it. You did an amazing job. It looks fantastic!
I've been refinishing cabinets for 15 years and I LOVE your technique, explanation, calm voice, close up pics, and tips. This is my favorite one so far!!! Chippy, distressed, is not my style. Love this 😀 Idea fir another that will go in a baby room, kids room is to add shelves on the side with a bar across the front for books, doing that for my grandson dur in June and has a small room. Thank you 😊
I've been watching videos all morning to learn how to paint my granddaughters wood bed frames and the correct supplies to get. I have to say, this was by far the BEST video I have seen!!!! GREAT JOB! Love the finished look!
BEST PAINT EVER!!!! You have to try it to believe it. The best thing is you don't have to strip the old paint off unless it's cracked, peeling etc. My granddaughter, who grew up watching me refinished furniture, recently moved and needed a new dining room set. While driving around, I found 6 cane chairs in horrible condition on garbage pickup day in one neighborhood. Next day on another pickup day I found an intact wooden coffee table, and then stopped by a Goodwill store where I bought a wood Trestle dining table marked down to $15!! I stabilized chair legs, removed the stink cane from chairs and found wooden chair inserts online. I did a lot of cleaning of furniture and only had to sand down where wood was chipped and repaired. My granddaughter loves black so I decided to use Beyond pain. It covers very good and a little goes a long way. I staged it in my house and my granddaughter put it on TIK TOK!! My next project with Beyond paint is an old Buffett that I have had over 35 years and always wanted to paint blue!!!
Nice work! There is a subtle tip I can give you. When using a finish nap finish in one direction only because a nap will leave two different finishes depending on what way you roll it
Had just painted an exterior door with this technique (minus the sealer) using the whiz roller and I also felt it was the best I had used. And THEN I came across this video lol The algorithm knows!
I am an amateur painter that is just starting to do house projects and need someone to learn from…You are SERIOUSLY my FAVORITE person to learn from! I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your videos… please keep them rolling! I will be watching all of them!
Nice tips. I've always primed my jobs that will be pained a light color and recently switched to Zinsser BIN shellac based primer. The stuff sticks to everything, hides the stain bleed through and goes on very thin. Two coats, a very light sanding (remove any bumps) and then top coat is all you need.
I’ve decided to paint my bedroom furniture and been watching lots of instructional videos. Yours is the best so far. I also love that you use the sleeve of your sweatshirt to wipe things off - I do that all the time 😀😀😀. You have inspired me. ❤. Wish me luck.
I would suggest using Floetrol additive to the paint. Helps with flow otu and brush marks. I use it when spraying acrylic latex paint for kitchen cabinets. Sherwin Williams s the best. Everybody is painting everything and calling it finishing. Real wood finishing takes skill. I did it for a living for years. One day another generation will be stripping all this paint off of this wood. Painting furniture was popular in the 1920s. We were stripping it off of antiques in the 1960s and 70s.
My mother has that same exact dresser. You got that dresser at a BARGAIN at $80 for a solid wood dresser. She paid $800 in the 1990s for that dresser. Anyway, I like what you did with the dresser. You gave it a modern look and a second life without breaking it apart. What’s nice is if that original style (Colonial) gets back in vogue, it’s easy to strip and refinish and put the original hardware back on the drawers.
Huge kudos to you for sharing this technique! My wife and I started repainting our hand-me-down crib black, and were so discouraged by all the brushstrokes after the first coat on the first piece. We tried this, and the rest of the project has been a breeze in comparison!
Girl that's a beauty, I am actually after the final result, I don't usually care about how it's done but no matter what your bashers says it still look nice. Good job 👍

Black furniture is so sophisticated and down to earth all at the same time, and so timeless!! Glad I persuaded you! Also check out my pottery barn “wood” finishes, they pair nicely with black furniture in a room ❤️
Oh my! Have a 44 year old hope chest! I wanted to paint it but always thought too much work i.e sanding. Finally decided to paint it black; was about to use chalk paint then watched your video! The chest turned out gorgeous❤! The HGTV paint was easy to use and covered imperfections! Only thing I did different was use Tricorn Black, slightly deeper color! Only few hours and done! Thx for posting!
OMGGGGG....That chest went from colonial to modern in a flash! AWESOME! You have just given me the confidence to refinish my dining table in black. Thank you. 😊
Thank you so much bc I want to start so badly and don’t know which paints to trust ! Yeah everyone say you can just paint over BUT, paint is not cheap ! Please continue to make videos of true beginners !
What a great video! I really appreciated your detailed information. When I looked at your first picture in the video, I thought it looked like the paint was sprayed on. I was amazed that it was brushed on (and rolled). Thank you!
I'm glad I found your channel. I've been paying$25-$35 quart for Heirloom Paint Traditions and I'm going broke lol! I learned from your other video how they make it! And learning how to properly paint furniture! Thank you!
Take a 5 in One and use the curved edge to scrape the paint off the roller when needed into your container. That’s what that curved edge was made for. I love your videos and am starting to do furniture and since you share I wanted to as well. 😊🤙🏻
Just finished my first dresser makeover! Followed the instructions carefully and LOVE ❤️ the results! I started with a reddish dresser from Wayfair that just never looked right in my room; now it’s fabulous in black!!!!
You are one of two women I will watch painting furniture! Your tutorial is EXCELLENT! I am rather old fashioned and I prefer original finish but your talent is very obvious and I appreciate not only your skill but your teaching and sharing technique! WONDERFUL channel!!!🙂
Beautiful!!! You done a Great Job !!! And thanks for the tips and sharing. You taught me something. Anyone who would be negative about this is just jealous that they are to lazy to do the same because your explanations are straightforward and easy to follow. I'll be using this method. Keep up the Great Work.
That looks absolutely beautiful. Definitely going to try it with a plant stand. Thinking, starting out small will give me a bit of encouragement to finish the remaining pieces in my guest room. ❤
I can’t effing believe it. RUclips actually recommended a great video . The dry foam roller to put the poly on is a great idea!! I quit using it bc it would always be too thick.
Absolutely outstanding. 99% of the people out there, including so-called “professional” finishers won’t be able to tell either. It takes less time, and less cleanup to paint the way you’re painting, than to use a spray gun. I own one, and there’s a time/place for it. GREAT video, thank you for sharing. That color is spectacular! 👍
16:19 I am such a beginner and have been trying to paint a side board black for over a year, trying anything and every thing. Can’t wait to try this. What a fun video. Not just the project but your infectious happy voice and giggle. If I can figure out how to show you how my side board turns out I will.
This is great! I just did a black dresser with chalk paint. I used a sprayer and mixed paint in with the clear coat. I ended up spraying the clear coat three times to get a finish I liked. This seems more manageable!
Love this Shannon! I've had bad experiences with chalk paint and have been so nervous to use those. Expensive oops paints without priming. You gave me some courage to try it this time and save myself unneeded work
You are Good young Lady! I teach myself to refurnished furniture long time ago and know how hard it is get professional look! You have great ideas thank you so much!
Love that. I’ve got a set of drawers just like that right down to the brass handles. It’s been banished to the barn because it looks so old fashioned. Would never have thought of trying to modernise it but I’m going to try and copy your method. I’ll be happy if I get it looking half as good as the end result you got. Thanks.
I was surprised when I saw your top-coat method because I do my top-coat exactly like you do! With the foam roller wiping it down. The only thing I do differently is I get the roller damp first and thin down the poly just a bit. Whenever the topcoat starts feeling "sticky or "grippy" like if you can feel the roller dragging on the surface, I go and rinse off the roller again. I don't press hard, I just skim smoothly over the surface. It should be easy because of the damp roller and thinning down the poly increases the viscosity. It should feel a bit slippery going on. I apply it in thin coats and sand with a super-fine sandpaper in between. After the 2nd coat! Before that, you run the risk of sanding through to the paint layer. I've used this technique of cabinet doors and I'm able to build up really thick durable smooth finishes that look professionally finished.
OMG...I am a total novice and I LOVED LOVED LOVED this video. Soooo many great tips!! I learned a ton. You're my kind of 'people' (including your Amazon excitement Lol). TYSM!!!
This is an excellent presentation. I have never done furniture painting before but after watching this I am definitely going to try it. Thanks for all the detail and good explanation, everything you need to do the job!
We’re cool I have been a house painter most of my life and have had problems doing furniture. I am in the process of painting a speaker cabinet and I have been having problems with the top collecting dust I will now turn the speaker cabinet on its side to do the top, thanks a million.
Thanks for the tips on applying paint and clear coats. Today I used your foam roller tip when I applied clear coat to the kitchen island doors. I would’ve liked to have seen your video weeks ago while I was deeply involved painting and clear coating our kitchen cabinets, but better late than never.
I love my sprayer, BUT it's so cold here now and so hard to spray in that type of weather, so I am doing a lot of dressers in my living room. Gonna try this method out! Looks great!
Im a painter her in phillipines, i love watching paint jobs in other country, i love to paint and do lots of work on it, im hoping that i can work someday in other country as a painter,
What an inspiring video! I have this exact same dresser and wanted to upgrade its look. Thank you for all your advice. I’m a novice and find this so helpful! Thank you.
Gorgeous! That is how you refinish in paint. The smooth finish is beautiful, I can’t wait for this chalk paint fad to fade away. Anyone can make a distressed piece.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. You really did a beautiful job. You’ve inspired me to get working on a sideboard that I’ve wanted to paint for years. Keep up the good work. 👍
I used your technique on a radio cabinet I was restoring. Even used the same paint and color. I’ll admit I was apprehensive as I’ve only ever sprayed furniture, but the cold weather made that impossible. It came out great, to the naked eye you would swear I sprayed it. Thanks again. 👍
Thank you so much! I thought there was something wrong with me because I really do not like chalk paint! Your dresser is beautiful and I have saved this video to reference when I am painting. Thanks again😍
Thank you so much for sharing your talent and spending your time on creating these enormously helpful videos! So, 3 cheers to you!!! I’m so thankful for this diy video! A coffee table that I was getting ready to trash, I am now going to try to resurrect! Quick question: Do you wait very long before applying the second coat? Thank you so much for your help👏👌👍😘
I am a second generation professional painter with 38 years experience. We have specialized in high quality painting finishes only. First and foremost you doing a great job but if you want to take it to another level of quality With just a few more simple tips. First of all the product that you are using is a water-based paint. All acrylics are water-based paint. Therefore you can use water to thin it. The majority of your high quality professional coatings (this excludes all of your home improvement store paints including bear)are made to thin to the user's specifications. They are not made to use straight out of the can. It is the biggest number one mistake that homeowners and amateurs make is to apply the professional product straight out of the can it is too thick. Therefore leaving brush marks. if you add a cup of water to a gallon to start with And stir thoroughly. The paint will lay down to a smooth finish without brush marks, and dry to look just like it was sprayed. Unfortunately the finish on the dresser in the video is nowhere near smooth. It has a rough texture due to the roller stimple that the roller left behind. If you simply take a high quality prudy nylon/ polyester brush with medium firmness, and long stroke the brush across the surface Immediately after rolling it will be a extremely smooth when dry, and look like it was sprayed and no one will believe that you brushed it. 🙂
Thanks! It’s super smooth to me 🖤 and I’ve sprayed many times so I know what smooth looks like. In the close ups I was showing wet paint so it may have looked bumpy but once it dries down I’m telling you, it’s really smooth. I have had trouble with streaks when I add water or floetral to my blacks when I brush or roll but maybe I’m doing something wrong there bc I don’t have that same problem when I spray. I’ll give your technique a try and I’m sure I’ll make a video if it goes well!
I’m impressed ! I painted a dresser black with chalk paint and brushed on and rolled on and had so many brush stocks and problems . Wish I knew about this paint when I did my project ! Thank you for you info !!!
foam brush WON'T do it. I have been painting for a long time and used all kinds of foam brushes and they all leave marks (won't be silky smooth). This can ONLY be accomplished two ways; one with adding plaint conditioner like Flood or professional sprayers. All other methods WILL leave foam and brush marks.
There are a few certain things in life… like after the day, comes the night.. .. times goes forward .. there will always have people hating. Your work has inspired me. Thank you !❤
Great point on the opportunity cost of the $80 vs $50 requiring repair. Even if you have no other work and are doing this to 'get by', it's important to consider the value of time (not just other materials). The time saved for that extra $30 is so valuable.

If you have a large surface to cover and don’t want your paint drying out on you, mix a little Floetrol in your paint. It gives you more work time!
When using a finish nap finish in one direction only because a nap will leave two different finishes depending on what way you roll it
Thank you good to know ❤
Ignore the hate comments - this is a great task of painting - LOVE IT
It looks so professional. Thanks for taking the time to explain and show your process in detail. Subscribed
Omg love this video and made me laugh too good job😂 reinspired to try my furniture flip thank you!!!
Yes!!!! I did everything you said and when I say chef Boyardee it’s the best work I’ve done!!!! Thank you!!!
Nice tips. I've always primed my jobs that will be pained a light color and recently switched to Zinsser BIN shellac based primer. The stuff sticks to everything, hides the stain bleed through and goes on very thin. Two coats, a very light sanding (remove any bumps) and then top coat is all you need.
Thank you so much for sharing all the gritty details with us-it’s SO helpful to absolutely newbies like me 🙏🏻❤️
I’ve decided to paint my bedroom furniture and been watching lots of instructional videos. Yours is the best so far. I also love that you use the sleeve of your sweatshirt to wipe things off - I do that all the time 😀😀😀. You have inspired me. ❤. Wish me luck.
I like your style. Straightforward and honest. The dresser looks great!
17:43 I own this same bedroom set. You have given me courage to do a makeover on my set. ❤❤
“Tall dark and handsome!!” 🔥😂
I love it!! Gotta try that paint, love your brush in mouth, and cleaning sleeves method 🙌
We are the same 😂
Girl that's a beauty, I am actually after the final result, I don't usually care about how it's done but no matter what your bashers says it still look nice. Good job 👍
Beautiful piece. It was nice before, but with the black paint and wooden knobs, you made it look like a masterpiece.!!
Great vid! Learned a lot.
Like your narration style. Very natural. You keep things interesting.
Girl look...I was going Farmhouse decor Until I saw your black chest..
You've helped me make my mind up.
I'm going Black!
This turned out Beautifully and I don't care how you got there..The finished project was the bomb!!!
Thanks for sharing!♥️
Where do you get HGTV paint and what finish did you use
@@kimlynn50 I used HGTV by Sherwin Williams Interior Ovation Plus from Lowes, I used Tricorn Black in Satin, gave a matte look
@@denisedenise3932 Thank you, will try it!
OMGGGGG....That chest went from colonial to modern in a flash! AWESOME! You have just given me the confidence to refinish my dining table in black. Thank you. 😊
You're my painting soulmate. Using a sleeve is just what i want to see and what I'm capable of. I did buy a bag of foam brushes and feel fancy.
This was soooooo goooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m feeling inspired - Also, I love the way you narrate, super easy to listen to!
Thank you!
Same. I'm using HTP. I do love it but it is expensive. I only buy it on sale.
Take a 5 in One and use the curved edge to scrape the paint off the roller when needed into your container. That’s what that curved edge was made for. I love your videos and am starting to do furniture and since you share I wanted to as well. 😊🤙🏻
Finally someone is using a roller! I've always painted this way and I was so confused to see that no one is doing this 👍
Just finished my first dresser makeover! Followed the instructions carefully and LOVE ❤️ the results! I started with a reddish dresser from Wayfair that just never looked right in my room; now it’s fabulous in black!!!!
Oh and I watched the video at least 10 times to really understand the technique.
@@tjemerson7447 lol you sound like me
I own a painting company. But i don’t do as much furniture more walls trim ceilings lol.
OMG I have the same dresser and I cannot go into 2023 looking at it. Beautiful work! I feel so overwhelmed but I want to start this process.
Thanks!
So excited ~ I just bought Ovation Plus satin Caviar Paint! Gonna paint that dresser now with your painting method!!!
That looks absolutely beautiful. Definitely going to try it with a plant stand. Thinking, starting out small will give me a bit of encouragement to finish the remaining pieces in my guest room. ❤
Doing same!
Amazing. Thank you so much for sharing. I love how you walked through every step and great commentary along the way.
This is how I painted my kitchen cabinets a few years ago. The foam roller test the finish smooth for sure
This is great! I just did a black dresser with chalk paint. I used a sprayer and mixed paint in with the clear coat. I ended up spraying the clear coat three times to get a finish I liked. This seems more manageable!
I starting flipping furniture, I like that "tall dark and handsome" piece. Good job !
I watch because you are so different and talented. I like the way you teach. You’re absolutely amazing. 🌈🖖🏽💕
❤️
Really appreciate your candid voiceover! Thank you!
Love that. I’ve got a set of drawers just like that right down to the brass handles. It’s been banished to the barn because it looks so old fashioned. Would never have thought of trying to modernise it but I’m going to try and copy your method. I’ll be happy if I get it looking half as good as the end result you got. Thanks.
I saw Katie Scott using a round flat sponge for dragging.
Nice colour. 👌
What a very informative video. Just what I needed. Your finished product is just a total knockout! Job well done! I'd buy it!
Beautiful work and fantastic tips. I can't wait for my first furniture paint project! Thank you!
I have a chest of drawer and a side table to finish. This is a great idea. You rock girl
Question: How long do you wait between coats before applying a new one? Does this paint dry fairly quickly? This was an amazing tutorial!!!
It dries pretty quick so by the time you get to the last part it’s nearly time to start the next coat
Now I know why you start with drawers…. By the time to get in between them they are dry! 👍🏼
This is stunning. I thought initially that the handles were gold, which goes to show how good your finish is! I love this.
I think I’m going to try doing my old dresser I have one almost identical. This looks beautiful. 😍
Lm
I'm debating on painting a sideboard too
Did you guys do it?? Just started my sideboard based off the video!
I used your technique on a radio cabinet I was restoring. Even used the same paint and color. I’ll admit I was apprehensive as I’ve only ever sprayed furniture, but the cold weather made that impossible. It came out great, to the naked eye you would swear I sprayed it. Thanks again. 👍
Beautiful! I’m about to buy a dresser that looks almost identical to that one and your painting tips will really help.
So if you followed this video and painted your dresser tell us what it looks like now one year later after not using a primer
Thanks for this video! I bought everything you used and painted a dresser I refused to get rid of for sentimental reason! It turned out great!
Thank you so much! I thought there was something wrong with me because I really do not like chalk paint! Your dresser is beautiful and I have saved this video to reference when I am painting. Thanks again😍
Very nice job! I love your technique!
I’m so glad your video popped up on my timeline
Will be trying exactly what you said.
So you don’t need to then Behr from Home Depot?
I’m impressed ! I painted a dresser black with chalk paint and brushed on and rolled on and had so many brush stocks and problems . Wish I knew about this paint when I did my project ! Thank you for you info !!!
foam brush WON'T do it. I have been painting for a long time and used all kinds of foam brushes and they all leave marks (won't be silky smooth). This can ONLY be accomplished two ways; one with adding plaint conditioner like Flood or professional sprayers. All other methods WILL leave foam and brush marks.
You aren’t doing it right then. I have always used this technique and it is brilliant!
@@northerngirl4666agreed, I do the same and it’s awesome
LOL! 7:12 Thanks so much for the video! Your project is simply beautiful and neat!
Holy cow! Lots of stuff I've NEVER thought of doing. Cool, interesting video.
There are a few certain things in life… like after the day, comes the night..
.. times goes forward
.. there will always have people hating.
Your work has inspired me.
Thank you !❤
Great point on the opportunity cost of the $80 vs $50 requiring repair. Even if you have no other work and are doing this to 'get by', it's important to consider the value of time (not just other materials). The time saved for that extra $30 is so valuable.
Ok, definitely going to get the paint and finish our dining room table.
Thanks for the excellent tutorial!
I recommend an oil enriched enamel for tables like valspar furniture and cabinet enamel 🖤
It’s just spectacular. All your black pieces are spectacular.
Life saver... This helped me sooo much now let me get these products and paint my wooden round table with chairs.... Very detailed information. I wax floors at my job so thank you for explaining everything in detail for a beginner...
Gotta redo my old desk for my daughter and this is perfect. THANK YOU!!!
