Loving this oil enriched enamel for black finishes 👏 and the Walmart brush and roller did the job! I still prefer whiz brand cabinets and doors white foam rollers and zibra brushes but hey not bad for the prices!
Thanks for your fantastic videos, I've really enjoyed your channel. Q: how would you compare your experience with this paint to the SW Ovation paint you used back in November?
I used hat technique when I first started using chalk pain. Love that it allows the wood to breath but not the rough surface. Because it’s so thick, I would apply the first coat with a foam roller and the paint thinned down a little. That lays on an even coat - which is hard for beginners. Then I brush it. After it dries really, really well, then I sand with a 400 or higher grit in between coats. Lots of work but you get a baby bottom smooth finish that. It very durable.
Once again you did an amazing job. I watch a lot of furniture artist/flippers and by far your my favorite. I love watching all your unique techniques and non frills ways of painting. I do enjoy painting furniture on the side and always looking for new ways and styles to flip my furniture. Keep up the great work. I truly enjoy and look forward to all of your videos.
I tested this method with chalkpaint and varnished water-based paint . My color white and navy blue. It's great work. İf you don't have it, do not apply too much paint, do not waste it and one more tips: if the room/weather is hot, quickly paint / quickly roll it . 👌 I love this method 😍 I am thankful to you Shannon 🙏
Wow, well there you go. I’m an amateur in comparison to so many and yet this is the exact method I started using 2 years back and I’ve not had a brush stroke since. Beautiful piece. Gorgeous finish
Beautiful piece, I’m so impressed with your technique. I watch a lot of furniture flippers and getting black that smooth without a paint sprayer seems to be pretty hard to do. Great job as always. Love that dresser.
Thank you for answering my question about the bubbles on the painted surfaces i might be putting a lot of paint but, now I know what was it.Thank you so much.🙏🏻👍🏻😃
it looked beautiful before. I mean I wonder how many folks do research before they paint furniture? I mean some furniture OK paint it.. 1970s pieces ESPECIALLY.. but really be careful before you slap a coat of paint on an old piece of furniture. You can destroy the original finish and it's value. KNOW what you have before you paint!.
You are a great teacher and so full of tips. I got sucked in to a name brand. I bought the clear coat, small jar, and it took half a jar to do 1 coat on my small secretary. all it is is poly. so thank you for showing me there are better options.
With a very sharp razor blade, cut the end of your foam roller off so it's not rounded. The squared off edge works much better in corners or around trim work.
Another awesome job Shannon! I've been doing the first coat with extra primer the second coat with just the black paint and the third coat with half and half paint and Varathane top coat. I just listed two black pieces this weekend. They're sprayed and wow they came out absolutely perfect. I just stand in the garage and stare at them in amazement. So smooth! Also mixing with matte to bring down the sheen of a satin or semi-gloss paint I may pick up. I found an entire gallon of a miss-tint valspar cabinet paint in a very pretty sage for 9 bucks. Yay! It is a semi-gloss though so the equal parts varathane matte water-based polyurethane works out well I'm up here in Charlotte not too far! Have a great week!
Used Zinzer Bin primer in my first coat, but it was a terrible mess! It was as thick as pudding, dried super fast and looked rough and not smooth. Like I painted it with pudding 😧 Guess I’ll keep the primer out next time
My grandmother had an identical or nearly identical set of bedroom furniture as this. Hers, of course, was fairly new and since she was an outstanding housekeeper it was in superb shape. It's interesting to see it in black as well as mahogany. I like it!
Oh loved how this came out !! Wanting to do a piece in my living room navy blue and I thought with gold handles but I liked those that you put on this black piece beautiful work thank you so much be blessed
This is perfect timing for me. I am painting my mother’s old dresser for my daughter’s baby room. She picked the same paint and color and I have two coats on and I am ready for a light sand and top coat. I’ve been debating how or whether I need a poly top coat, I think I will take your advice and mix with poly. It will never be this smooth because it’s a pine dresser from the 50s with some deep dings and lots of texture and knots in the wood, but I really wanted the top and sides to be as smooth as possible. I think it’s finally dry enough to sand today so I’m going to try it!
I just finished a dresser using your methods and the Valspar Paint in Caviar. It turned out amazing! The paint quality is top notch. Thank you for sharing!
Gorgeous! I'm one of those loving the look of black furniture right now its so elegant. Thanks for all the tips. I just recently used the ovation plus paint in one project I'm looking forward to trying this one in another upcoming piece.
So pretty, you did an amazing job!! I’ve recently tried the painter’s tripods and they are a game changer when painting the base or legs of furniture. Even the slimmer legs like in this video. Love your brush cleaning technique. I use a 5 in 1 tool to remove the excess paint from my rollers and you would be thrilled to see how much paint you save!
Great tutorial! I’m in the process of almost the same mahogany chest in black on the sides and I’m having so many issues that I’ve never had. Going to try this!
Gorgeous finish but I’d have liked to see the pre sanded stage, why it was necessary to sand and what it looked like post sanding before the next coat of paint
Hi there I just love watching your videos you explain everything so well and throw in extra bits that I think are so fun! Thanks for making these and posting them I appreciate it!! ❤👍
New subscriber and new at flipping furniture ❤️ Forgive me if you have already but I was wonder if you could do a video elaborating a bit on the business side of things? You mentioned to talk to local designers and such to get business but as a beginner, what are some tips you would give on how exactly to talk to these people and how to price your time, etc. Also, how do you stay in the know on things like what is in style at the moment. I know research internet but that can be so overwhelming because there is so much information! Anyways, I absolutely love your voice overs and your style. So entertaining and knowledgeable. Big thank you from Texas ❤️
I stick with pottery barn for inspo/trends and I charge designers $35 per hour. I just meet them through ppl or reach out on Instagram and say hi and let them know what you can do and what you charge. A lot of them don’t know what we can do with old furniture so before and after pics go a long way. I sold on Facebook marketplace the first 2 years of biz and did great there too, happy flipping! Dressers sell faster than most other items (I don’t bother with single nightstands or dining chairs, learned that the hard way 😆 )
Shannan: Do you like this paint as much, or more than Ovation for painting black? I absolutely love this make-over and want to try at least one of your Black finishes!!
I'm just wondering why everyone else even bothers to sand.. you didn't do anything except apply paint and it looks good. everyone else does soooo much prep work . I guess I'm shocked that even the glossy varnish wasn't even scuff sanded. . im super interested to know if this paint adhered well and stays durable like this.. im going to be trying out this roller method I had no idea I needed multiple rollers.. im in awe... no drop cloths, no blue or green tape, no plastic protection, no paint tent, no nothing.. just amazing.. 👏
I love how this piece turned out! I am doing a lot of black right now too :-) I am confused though since you said the paint is oil and rich enamel, it seems like it could not be mixed with a water-based top coat and seems like it would not be a soap and water cleanup. Can you explain that please? Thanks!
Beautiful! How did you keep the ornate details (like the ovals on the two sides) so even? I find myself going over things so many times bc I can’t stand seeing any differences in those tiny corners/edges where the wood is popped out-not sure that even makes sense? Anyways, beautiful job!
Just a tip don’t wash your paint off brushes and rollers down the drain. Over time it will clog your house drains. Just a tip I have learned over the years.
This came out absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I want to paint my grandmother’s dining set I inherited and your technique seems like something I actually can do. How much paint/poly each do I use for the final coat?
Do you only use this technique for black paint of do you do it with other lighter colors as well? I’m a Beginner and trying to makeover some pieces for my daughters first college apartment. Would also love a tutorial on how you do the details, like legs & spindles. Thanks ❤ the tutorials !!!
So helpful thank you , I have been doing similar with the black and varnish but must see if in uk can get the enamel type paint . I think the market in uk is a little slower for up cycled , but want to keep up cycling as I love it , your content is very helpful
I bought this same piece to paint black for my guest room but the veneer on one of the drawers was pulled off. I'm hoping I can get mine to look as good as yours.
I've just painted 2 pieces of furniture black. I love the black but black and WHITE FARMHOUSE. The best thing about cleaning the brushes? My sink is black.
Hi Shannon, one of your long term followers here and I’ve learned a lot from you and appreciate how free you are with sharing your techniques! Do you have an Amazon wishlist as I would like to give a little something back to you. Thanks 😊
You are so sweet! I’m just now getting into the whole Amazon thing so I don’t think I have a wish list yet but I’m sure I’ll have one at some point ❤️ best thing you can do is just keep doing what you are doing and just watching and commenting on the videos I post, it really helps me grow the channel so I appreciate you SO much for being here from the early days!!
Omg I love this 🥰 how do you touch this up if something happens? Also, can you use this exact technique for kitchen cabinets? The sealer mixed with the paint for final coat? Thanks So much I love your videos
Shannon! BEAUTIFUL JOB!!! Would you suggest this paint for a kitchen table? Would it stand up to wear? Love the idea of giving touch up paint to your client- would you give them the paint with the topcoat mixed in? Thanks so much! LOVE your work!
Loving this oil enriched enamel for black finishes 👏 and the Walmart brush and roller did the job! I still prefer whiz brand cabinets and doors white foam rollers and zibra brushes but hey not bad for the prices!
Brilliant video. Black is such a hard colour to perfect. I trued this paint & really like it. What is the paint name? Caviar?? Cheers.
Ignore - I read the description, it’s Caviar.
Thanks for your fantastic videos, I've really enjoyed your channel. Q: how would you compare your experience with this paint to the SW Ovation paint you used back in November?
love your videos and thanks for sharing. to clarify, you mix an oil based product with a water based?
Is it Sherwin Williams Caviar?? Or Valspar Caviar?? At Lowe’s, they’re asking me which one.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen such a sheen on painted furniture! You’re a pro.
I used hat technique when I first started using chalk pain. Love that it allows the wood to breath but not the rough surface. I agree Sue.
Me too, I agree
Shannon is also my favorite channel to watch, I love that she’s down to earth and uses materials that are easy to find without spending a fortune.

Really nice!! Thanks for the ‘extras’ like how you clean your brushes & rollers & the special flooring for staging area 🙏
Again you are a delight to listen to and you pumped out a flawless piece.
Thank you for answering my question about the bubbles on the painted surfaces i might be putting a lot of paint but, now I know what was it.Thank you so much.🙏🏻👍🏻😃
Thank you so much! It looks absolutely amazing! Because of you and your awesome tips I was able to paint my furniture pieces black with no streaks!
Best tutorial ever for painting furniture black. Thank you so much for sharing. 😊
Beautiful job however the dings would bother me. I am OCD about everything being smooth. But I love how you did everything, so smooth. Perfection!!
You turned that into a beautiful piece that anyone would want. I sure would!
it looked beautiful before. I mean I wonder how many folks do research before they paint furniture? Thanks for your tip. Is it easy to clean the sprayer using the enamel paint? Also do you scuff sand the piece before painting?
Used Zinzer Bin primer in my first coat, but it was a terrible mess! It was as thick as pudding, dried super fast and looked rough and not smooth. Like I painted it with pudding 😧 Guess I’ll keep the primer out next time
My very first project is that VERY 4 piece bedroom set. It was my mother- in -laws. Can’t wait to see what you do!
Absolutely gorgeous! Love everything about this piece! Great tips, thank you.
Shannon I just love your work...and this beautiful dresser did not disappoint... thank you for always sharing your furniture tips with us🥰👍❣️❣️
Great video! The dresser looks fabulous! Thanks for sharing!👍
Your method is like rolling and tipping, but in reverse! Great job 👍
Forgot to add your videos are so well done. Thanks for the generosity of all the advice!
My grandmother had an identical or nearly identical set of bedroom furniture as this. Hers, of course, was fairly new and since she was an outstanding housekeeper it was in superb shape. It's interesting to see it in black as well as mahogany. I like it!

I learned alot on your technique for the top coat. I've became seasoned and you taught me more which I love. The floor hack too was amazing 🤩
So pretty, you did an amazing job!! I’ve recently tried the painter’s tripods and they are a game changer when painting the base or legs of furniture. Even the slimmer legs like in this video. thanks for shearing the brand of the paint ! Video was very helpful!
Wow this is beautiful! I'll remember your brush and roller technique. I also just did a black piece. Thanks for all the tips. ✨🌺✨
Gorgeous finish but I’d have liked to see the pre sanded stage, why it was necessary to sand and what it looked like post sanding before the next coat of paint
Oh my gosh!
EXCELLENT work! 👍❤️
OMG thank you for this full flip share. Love it.
Hi there I just love watching your videos you explain everything so well and throw in extra bits that I think are so fun! Thanks for making these and posting them I appreciate it!! ❤👍

My thoughts too!
I just read the paint can; it says soap and water cleanup. It’s an “oil infused” water based product. Not sure how that works, but I guess it does!
Maybe because it's only oil infused the smaller amount of oil allows soap and water to be used, just a guess.
Beautiful! How did you keep the ornate details (like the ovals on the two sides) so even? I find myself going over things so many times bc I can’t stand seeing any differences in those tiny corners/edges where the wood is popped out-not sure that even makes sense? Anyways, beautiful job!
Very nice makeover. Great tips
Beautiful….just beautiful!! ❤️
Just beautiful! Thank you!!!
What a beautiful job!
Love this piece! Nice job.
So much improved,,beautiful job
Quedó hermoso, gracias por todos los consejos, todos muy buenos.
Stunning piece , love your work.did you use semi or satin caviar?
Just a tip don’t wash your paint off brushes and rollers down the drain. Over time it will clog your house drains. Just a tip I have learned over the years.
This came out absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I want to paint my grandmother’s dining set I inherited and your technique seems like something I actually can do. How much paint/poly each do I use for the final coat?
I usually do half and half
I love your technique.

Looks great!
Love your talent for turning old dirty pieces into beautiful art. Didn't care for the music though.
It looks just gorgeous, love your videos , did you mix the all the paint together please let me know
Love❤your work!
So helpful thank you , I have been doing similar with the black and varnish but must see if in uk can get the enamel type paint . I think the market in uk is a little slower for up cycled , but want to keep up cycling as I love it , your content is very helpful
Beautiful!
Beautiful
I am amazed you can actually mix together 2 liquids;an oil based paint and water base toocoat? Wow! How is that possible?
I love watching your videos. Thank you. One question. Which one do you prefer - Valspar or Sherwin Williams for streak free finishes with dark colors?
I bought this same piece to paint black for my guest room but the veneer on one of the drawers was pulled off. I'm hoping I can get mine to look as good as yours.
Thank you for sharing your tips with us! 🤗
I've just painted 2 pieces of furniture black. I love the black but black and WHITE FARMHOUSE. The best thing about cleaning the brushes? My sink is black.

Perfection!!! I know you didn't sand or prime, would you if you did a lighter color paint?
yooooo, thats super clean
Questions: do you rinse off soap residue when cleaning? Also do you start with a DRY foam roller or do you moisten it first?
Omg I love this 🥰 how do you touch this up if something happens? Also, can you use this exact technique for kitchen cabinets? The sealer mixed with the paint for final coat? Thanks So much I love your videos
Love it, beautiful ❤
Great tutorial!
Perfection as usual.
In a previous video, you used the ovation black paint. I would like to know do you prefer the ovation or do you prefer this Valspar?
Shannon! BEAUTIFUL JOB!!! Would you suggest this paint for a kitchen table? Would it stand up to wear? Love the idea of giving touch up paint to your client- would you give them the paint with the topcoat mixed in? Thanks so much! LOVE your work!
Your work is impressive to say the least. Just curious. Why don't you use a paint sprayer.
Thank you.
Great tutorial. Thank you
Gorgeous!!!
Do u dry your roller sometimes during the process of putting on each coat of paint?
beautiful as always! what do you look for when you're finding pieces to paint?
Amazing job, great tutorial! I'm surprised you do your work without a drop cloth on wood floors, but I'm messy.
