I Forgot How Bad These Were- REFINISHING MID CENTURY DRESSERS with Odie's Oil

  • Things don't always go as planned. That should be lesson #1 in furniture flipping. 🤣
I purchased these two mid century dressers from FB Marketplace over a year ago, and had forgotten about the amount of finish damage there was. I was hoping initially they would be just be a quick clean up and re-sell, but clearly, that wasn't going to happen. Instead, it was four days of work to turn these two out, but I'm so happy with the results. Odie's Oil for the win.

Word of advice from a senior. Don't worry what other people think about your methods of doing things. You have an incredible gift for knowing what to do with pieces. Sure some may not have turned out the way you expected, but overall I'm completely sure you have made correct decisions in the vast majority of your projects. You have an amazing talent and it shows with everything you have shown us. I look forward to all your videos as I am a MCM lover also. Confidence!

Agree with all of this. And if I may add, Angie, you're not afraid to reassess and adjust if it's not what you'd hoped. After investing a lot of time and effort, I tend to just say, "Eh, good enough." And then I always wish I'd gone back and tried again. That's the kind of devotion and persistence that really shows in your work. You've inspired me to step back awhile and take another look before settling.

I agree. I think it comes off as insecure, and I’m not sure Angie means it. But be proud and confident in your decisions. Who cares what any nay sayer says on social media?! You’re amazing and are putting so much love into all you do, girl! Don’t apologize for any of it!!

Angie, I think it's an amazing and culturally important gift how you discuss both sides of a viewpoint and then graciously expand on yours. I tend to always agree with you, but if I were, say, a hardcore MCM loyalist I would feel seen and validated by the way you explain things. I honestly don't find this trait of yours in the least bit insecure. Rather, I see you as a highly advanced communicator capable of navigating controversy. In today's strange world, your presentation of harmony discussing opposing views is frankly a bit revolutionary.

One of the main reasons I watch your channel is to see your love and understanding of the wood used for each piece. I feel I can trust that you will bring each piece back to it's former self, even if that isn't how it started (like this piece was more blond). It's wonderful to see that kind of respect for the furniture or the original maker or the wood itself and also keeping things out of the landfill to be used and beautiful again. It's very unique to you and your process and I admire it a lot. Thanks for that kind of caring! It's beautiful, as always.

It’s finally happened: I’m out of superlatives to describe how beautiful your work is! Gorgeous reveal of what was there the whole time, though shrouded by the original finish!!! Sometimes, your artistry and work creates beauty from ashes (there have been pieces I’ve actually felt a visceral reaction of disgust seeing in its ‘BEFORE’ state-specifically the pieces w/ plastic finish🤣), other times, it’s lifting a shroud to show the beauty present all along.
    Really amazing.

ANGIE! Thank you for this well-timed video! You have confirmed i made the best decision for a piece I’m working on. I found a mid-century solid walnut stepped end table at a yard sale for $1, but it had long ago been painted black. I stripped the paint and found the same, muddy-toned finish you described under it. I thought, (for a second), that I should try to replicate the original finish, but the walnut grain and color is GORGEOUS. A few days ago I ordered Odie’s and plan to finish it with that. Your work looks beautiful and now I’m super excited to see how mine turns out!!

Agree on Howard’s. It’s good in limited situations. I recently refinished an oak desk that the shellac finish had totally failed and refinishing was the only option. The remaining finish scraped off like baby powder. After repairing and staining, I plan to use Odies oil as the luster is perfect for this piece and it actually improves the durability of the wood.

I run a violin shop and the original varnish is integral to the value of the instrument- so no matter what we fix and touch up everything. It's so interesting how different it is for furniture! Also, I restore bows and it's fine to strip any varnish off those as they're supposed to only have a French polish. I'm loving your channel! 💜

When I was a kid we had two cats and a rabbit. The rabbit had full run of the backyard during the day, and the cats were often out there with him. One of the cats would straddle the rabbit's back and wash his ears for him. Took a while - them was big ears. Was so cute to watch. I know you worry about trying to keep things fresh and interesting, but honestly I I keep watching because of how stunning your finished pieces turn out. You are an incredibly talented artist with great eye for color and texture. It makes me feel bad whenever you people criticize your choices and you feel like you have to defend yourself. Frankly you make great decisions on every piece. My advice to you is to explain your thought process. But never feel like you have to defend or justify your process. You will never please everyone. Nacho looks like my new rescue “Squirrel”-yes he’s a cat. He was hanging out on our roof where we often have squirrels and my husband kept talking about squirrels on the roof, turns out it was a cat. I was hoping to place him because I don’t need another cat, I made a bit of an effort to find out if he belongs to someone but since he is about a year old, not neutered or chipped, very underweight, and was out and about our house for three or four days at least before we figured out what was going on, I got him neutered, chipped and vaccinated and was looking to place him, I just ended up not trying very hard. He’s got the same coat pattern as Nacho and after some quarantine time my other (three!) cats are teaching him some manners but accepting him pretty well. Enjoy Nacho!

Nice easy music, nice voice, no fake hyper-dramatic yapping, no power tool noises included (don't know what ever possesses anyone to include that noise in their videos), footage of the animals and fundraisers are entertaining also. The animals break up the restoration footage just right! The whole time you are working on a Smokey piec, I can just smell it from here. I grew up in a both- smoking-parent household. I used Odies Oil on a cherry dining room table 6 months ago. I am so impressed with the beauty of the finish and the water resistance. Am so grateful to you Angie for you promoting this product that has made my family heirloom beautiful again!

Angie, both of those pieces turned out so spectacularly, I’m totally impressed by your skill and vision. You do amazing work, you should be so proud of yourself. Nacho is adorable and I love seeing the bunnies. Totally cute addition to your furniture flips. Another great job giving your furniture pieces a one of a kind look. Someone will be blessed to cherish those two pieces for years to come.

Wow. Just wow. No words - I just keep shaking my head in disbelief at the transformation. Beautiful. From watching your channel I have finally understood about myself that walnut is my favorite - it's timeless and it's the color and grain I think of when I think of wood. Thank you for honoring the true color and beauty of those pieces.

Thank you for rescuing & restoring these; they so so much better in so many ways than they did originalLt. The colors are rich & warm, and the natural grain is just beautiful.

Simply beautiful, Angie. Hard to imagine trading that beautiful (!!) wood grain for that sallow yellowish monotoned color. The time you took to restore it to its natural glory is evident in the finished product. As usual, BRAVO! Job well done!

I use to hate the MCM style furniture until I found your channel. I had no idea that there was beautiful wood hiding under some of these finishes. I was born in 1968 and grew up with this style. So to me, it was just old, ugly furniture. What is funny is that the antique furniture I love is what my grandmother called old, ugly furniture -lol. Maybe growing up around a particular style can make some of us blind to its unique beauty. Thank you for all the lessons I have learned from you.

This set is just beautiful. In my opinion it’s 200% better. Me, myself and I like the red hues of the stains. I have a homemade bookshelf and I really want to paint it red. But I guess I’ll have to wait and see. One again these are beautiful and I love watching your channel. ❤️🙏🏼🌻❤️🙏🏼🌻

You are a true artist and I fondly wish for you to see how truly talented you are. You bring so much pleasurable character to the furniture you restore while providing a service to the environment and history of of these pieces. I have learned so much from you about veneer and I am almost ashamed to say I used to think it was rubbish furniture but you shed a light for me that proves otherwise and I see now it takes a true master to restore this furniture well and I aspire to be as talented.

Love these! Just the right amount of MCM for me! I’m seeing this on Nov. 28, 2023. Nacho seems so tiny! The bunnies are big and beautiful, too. How lucky these creatures are to be a part of your and Andrea’s family! ❤️

You don't have to excuse the way you work or treat your furniture. It's your way of working and I think it will be absolutely fantastic.
Don't care what other people think, maybe that's their way of working. And there is always someone who has to criticize, maybe it boosts their self-esteem.
I do not excuse my lack of grammatical knowledge.

    Angie Angie Angie missed ya!
Well I love the style and I like the color when I initially saw these pieces.
But oh God, that beautiful wood grain pops now!!!
    Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks for that metal spray for door handles I've tried a couple different types that look okay but the one you used on this project looks so much more like metal.
And the kids are getting along fine there. 😉
Thanks for sharing another awesome restoration. 👍
