I Forgot How Bad These Were- REFINISHING MID CENTURY DRESSERS with Odie's Oil

- Things don't always go as planned. That should be lesson #1 in furniture flipping. 🤣
I purchased these two mid century dressers from FB Marketplace over a year ago, and had forgotten about the amount of finish damage there was. I was hoping initially they would be just be a quick clean up and re-sell, but clearly, that wasn't going to happen. Instead, it was four days of work to turn these two out, but I'm so happy with the results. Odie's Oil for the win.

Word of advice from a senior. Don't worry what other people think about your methods of doing things. You have an incredible gift for knowing what to do with pieces. Sure some may not have turned out the way you expected, but overall I'm completely sure you have made correct decisions in the vast majority of your projects. You have an amazing talent and it shows with everything you have shown us. I look forward to all your videos as I am a MCM lover also. Confidence!
Agree with all of this. And if I may add, Angie, you're not afraid to reassess and adjust if it's not what you'd hoped. After investing a lot of time and effort, I tend to just say, "Eh, good enough." And then I always wish I'd gone back and tried again. That's the kind of devotion and persistence that really shows in your work. You've inspired me to step back awhile and take another look before settling.
I agree. I think it comes off as insecure, and I’m not sure Angie means it. But be proud and confident in your decisions. Who cares what any nay sayer says on social media?! You’re amazing and are putting so much love into all you do, girl! Don’t apologize for any of it!!
Angie, I think it's an amazing and culturally important gift how you discuss both sides of a viewpoint and then graciously expand on yours. I tend to always agree with you, but if I were, say, a hardcore MCM loyalist I would feel seen and validated by the way you explain things. I honestly don't find this trait of yours in the least bit insecure. Rather, I see you as a highly advanced communicator capable of navigating controversy. In today's strange world, your presentation of harmony discussing opposing views is frankly a bit revolutionary.
😍 (ps thank you for nacho bun time)
Well thank you Cindy, and also to Toni, Carrie and Tuesday & Charlie - I really appreciate the faith and support. ❤️I'm a perfectionist combined with being my own worst critic so it's trying at times! Thank you again!! It means a lot.
Your work here reminds me of why, among so many talented RUclips furniture refinishers I've enjoyed, you have become my favorite, with top notch standards and clear explanations of each step.
Angie, I love your style of teaching. You explain your reasoning for why you choose one technique over another and always sound so humble and charming. Very soothing to watch you and I’m always amazed at how gorgeous your pieces turn out!
One of the main reasons I watch your channel is to see your love and understanding of the wood used for each piece. I feel I can trust that you will bring each piece back to it's former self, even if that isn't how it started (like this piece was more blond). It's wonderful to see that kind of respect for the furniture or the original maker or the wood itself and also keeping things out of the landfill to be used and beautiful again. It's very unique to you and your process and I admire it a lot. Thanks for that kind of caring! It's beautiful, as always.
I definitely like the after color much more than the before color. These pieces are gorgeous! Nice job!
Howard Restore A Finish is for people like me who just want give a little more life to my furniture. What you are doing here is a full restoration like an artist! They don’t even compare. It’s like comparing apples and oranges, I can’t believe someone even made the suggestion. Angie, your work is genius! I’m so happy to see your channel growing.
Thank you for watching!
I also like the variation in the wood - I thought I didn’t like walnut, now I realize I don’t like the cool, chalky chocolate colour the walnut had been toned to
I've heard this a few times! I LOVE walnut and also find it sad how often its beautiful natural variations are covered up to look uniform.
Beautiful!!
Wow!! Unbelievable! I'm not even an MCM fan, but these pieces made my jaw drop. They are far more beautiful than anything new you could find in a shop, no matter what you were willing to pay. You put the love into your work, and it shines like a diamond. So much respect.
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate all your kind words. It brings great satisfaction to save these pieces and give them a new life. Thank you for watching!
It’s finally happened: I’m out of superlatives to describe how beautiful your work is! Gorgeous reveal of what was there the whole time, though shrouded by the original finish!!! Sometimes, your artistry and work creates beauty from ashes (there have been pieces I’ve actually felt a visceral reaction of disgust seeing in its ‘BEFORE’ state-specifically the pieces w/ plastic finish🤣), other times, it’s lifting a shroud to show the beauty present all along.
Really amazing.
Bunnies!! Nacho!! So cute!!!🥰
Literally took my breath away, what a transformation! These are absolutely stunning after refinishing! Now I'm side-eyeing my sister's 1947 desk which we're pretty sure is solid oak, and I can't wait to get it refinished for her!
It’s like you took these pieces and made them into what they should’ve been all along. They’re beautiful ❤️
Thank you so much!
I can’t imagine any criticism. You are an artist and I agree about the wood. Don’t need to stain unless you absolutely have to. You do a wonderful job every time. The hardware turned out great. I wish I had your knowledge and talent. I’ll just keep watching. BTW the tone was blah before like you said, the new is gorgeous.
Thank you very much!
ANGIE! Thank you for this well-timed video! You have confirmed i made the best decision for a piece I’m working on. I found a mid-century solid walnut stepped end table at a yard sale for $1, but it had long ago been painted black. I stripped the paint and found the same, muddy-toned finish you described under it. I thought, (for a second), that I should try to replicate the original finish, but the walnut grain and color is GORGEOUS. A few days ago I ordered Odie’s and plan to finish it with that. Your work looks beautiful and now I’m super excited to see how mine turns out!!
I'm so excited for you! I bet it turned out amazing. Thanks so much for watching!
As others have said, I can’t believe the difference between the old finish and the new. They look SOOOO much better now you’ve worked your magic on them! 🙂
As always, thanks for such a lovely video. And please keep the rescue bunny intermissions going! 😀. xx
Doesn’t even look like the same furniture. The redo gives it an appearance of balance and artistic shadow line depth.
You are incredibly talented ‼️
Agree on Howard’s. It’s good in limited situations. I recently refinished an oak desk that the shellac finish had totally failed and refinishing was the only option. The remaining finish scraped off like baby powder. After repairing and staining, I plan to use Odies oil as the luster is perfect for this piece and it actually improves the durability of the wood.
I run a violin shop and the original varnish is integral to the value of the instrument- so no matter what we fix and touch up everything. It's so interesting how different it is for furniture! Also, I restore bows and it's fine to strip any varnish off those as they're supposed to only have a French polish. I'm loving your channel! 💜
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Absolutely stunning transformation! They turned out to be so beautiful! MC is definitely not my furniture style of choice, but even I can appreciate the time, effort, and care you put into refinishing these pieces and bringing them to much better than before. They are really beautiful pieces! 10/10!
THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. YOU LOVE CATS! 😺😺😺😺😺😺😺😺😺😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻NACHO IS ADORABLE! SO WE ALL GET OUR KITTY FIX AND WATCHING YOU CREATE MAGIC AT THE SAME TIME!
AND THE PRECIOUS BUNS ARE ADORABLE TOO! NACHO LIKES THEM! HOW SWEET!
Love the bunnies. Had two netherland dwarf girls, and they were my hearts love. They were both funny, intelligent, beautiful souls. It was my privilege to have them in my life
Awe, I love that. Thank you for sharing that with me, and thank you for watching! 🐰
Absolutely beautiful wood refinish! I ❤️ how Odies oil brings out the amazing wood tone. I've never been a fan of lacquer finish. This looks 💯 better! I also appreciate you taking the time to scrap off the finish when you can. Stripper is so ugh! Thanks for sharing ❣️
Angie, I'm with you. Beautiful woodgrain should always be the star! Those pieces were like Cinderella at the ball.😊
Nacho is getting so big!
omg!! Angie... it's as though the pieces were enslaved (in 'factory blonde') and you came along and liberated the true nature of each piece: "Free! FREE AT LAST!! Look at us! We're BEAUTIFUL!!" They just look completely different ... and real. REAL furniture... and you see the personality of each, which I think is so important. Wow! You did (as always. Seriously!!) a stunning job! (They're HAPPY!!!).
You rescued them! ✨️now they can show off their natural beauty along with their mid-century style. ✨️ thank you for spending the time to make this set as much as they can be.
You're very welcome! ☺️
I was so happy to hear you clarify “Restore- a- Finish”. You do meticulous work. Beautiful. Love nacho and the bunnies.
Did anybody else hear Angie do a mic drop...turn around and walk away? I did, these are stunning! Absolute perfection as expected.
Haha! Thank you very much!
When I was a kid we had two cats and a rabbit. The rabbit had full run of the backyard during the day, and the cats were often out there with him. One of the cats would straddle the rabbit's back and wash his ears for him. Took a while - them was big ears. Was so cute to watch. I'm sure our cats also thought, just like Nacho, that he was one strange looking cat.
My what big ears you have strange kitty! 🐰😺😉 Thanks so much for watching!
I wouldn’t have looked twice at them in the original yellow-toned finish, but now? Stunning! You make me wonder how many hidden treasures I have overlooked.
Thanks for watching Jessica!
Wow! I'm an absolute sucker for a gorgeous wood grain reveal and these definitely hit the spot. 🤗 Thx as always.
Angie, I have no words! The magic you work on these pieces is phenomenal. I would that one day, I could own a piece refinished by you 💕
I am always amazed at the before and after of all your projects. I know you worry about trying to keep things fresh and interesting, but honestly I I keep watching because of how stunning your finished pieces turn out. You are an incredibly talented artist with great eye for color and texture. It makes me feel bad whenever you people criticize your choices and you feel like you have to defend yourself. Frankly you make great decisions on every piece. My advice to you is to explain your thought process. But never feel like you have to defend or justify your process. You will never please everyone. Just keep doing what you do. You are absolutely amazing at it. 🥰😍🤩😲💖
Thank you so much Erika, you nailed it. These makeovers are always subjective so not everyone will like what I did and that's perfectly ok.
I love how you use Odie's Oil to bring out the depth and clarity of the grain, as well as the true colors in the wood! Bravo, Angie!
Thank you so much 😀
You did an amazing job!! As usual your instincts were right during your process. You are in my top 3 favorite furniture artists. Barry from Mad City Modern and Sara from 445 Design. I wish I lived where you are cuz I would be buying your pieces even if I didn’t need them!! Can’t wait to see what is next from you! Be blessed!! DDecker
You always find the most beautiful pieces. Even before restoration ❤️ I can't wait til the end of the video!
You know, for bringing back all the richness of the colour, the end result is still somehow softer than the original finish and it's much less harsh on the eyes imo. You've done an incredible job as always
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that.
MAKE THAT WOOD SING, ANGIE GURL! MAKE IT SING!! BEAUTIFUL AS ALWAYS! I JUST LOVE MCM FURNITURE! IT IS THE EPITAMY OF COOLNESS AND SIMPLICITY IN STYLE.
Thank you so much Dottie!! 😃
Interesting i said that. i have a cousin (who is also named, ANGIE) who is a singer! lol!
I’m really enjoying these videos. I love that you focus on classic and retro styles. You make them look gorgeous!
Thank you very much!
An amazing transformation, as is your norm. Definitely a 'labor of love' - always refinishing furniture as if you would be using it in your home.
I can hear the wood saying “ahhhh, I can finally breathe “. Beautiful!
Yes! Thank you!
You need to be called the "wood whisperer". You mentioned how some people want to use or maintain the old finishes on these pieces; but it's like they didn't listen to what the wood was saying in the first place. You pay attention, and the results are once again stunning.
Nacho is one of the most PRECIOUS kitties I've ever seen! And the pattern on his fur is so unique, I don't think I've ever seen something like that before. It looks like wood grain, which is SO cool in itself but also a great coincidence that his mommah refurbishes wood furniture. =)
His graining is gorgeous isn't it? 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
I absolutely love how the color came out. I am also a very big natural wood color person. I like how in modern furniture they usually don’t apply all this sad and dull thick layers of lacquer. It is much richer look what the nature has done, that you are enhancing not killing it.
I'm so glad you like it! Thank you very much for watching! 😊
Nacho looks like my new rescue “Squirrel”-yes he’s a cat. He was hanging out on our roof where we often have squirrels and my husband kept talking about squirrels on the roof, turns out it was a cat. I was hoping to place him because I don’t need another cat, I made a bit of an effort to find out if he belongs to someone but since he is about a year old, not neutered or chipped, very underweight, and was out and about our house for three or four days at least before we figured out what was going on, I got him neutered, chipped and vaccinated and was looking to place him, I just ended up not trying very hard. He’s got the same coat pattern as Nacho and after some quarantine time my other (three!) cats are teaching him some manners but accepting him pretty well. Enjoy Nacho!
WOW Angie!!! Every time you reveal one of your incredible transformations I think to myself...I wish the original designer/manufacturer could see what you've done. You are a true artist that brings out the beautiful potential that these pieces have had all along, and should have been from the beginning. If they were living beings, they'd be standing with pride demanding the adoration they deserve. As always, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and making these pieces shine with new life and beauty. PS...Nacho is the cutest little kitty in the world and is so blessed to have you and Andrea as parents!!! He was such a good boy with the bun buns!!!
Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words Nessa! I really appreciate that!
They were most definitely sun bleached and finish was finished, as it were. You did the perfect job on these beautiful mid-century pieces. The natural wood tones are drop dead GORGEOUS 😍!
Those pieces look so wonderful after you were done. Mid century modern is growing on me. I think your work shows real craftsmanship and imagination. Not everyone is a true craftsman and artist.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like my work! 🙂
Love how Nacho looks like he is watching TV when first meeting the buns. Buns aren’t too sure what to make of that small “predator” creature but he looks harmless
Like night and day. That will be someone's "antique" again in 20 years. You do such fine work.
Thanks so much!!
Another couple of pieces to blow me away....the grain and how you can showcase it is amazing...thankyou for the Taco and bunny love too...always an extra highlight... I had a bunny and a kitten here for a long while, the bunny was a "long eared guinea pig" come vet time as they are illegal in this state ( in Australia )... they were so playful and loving towards each other and towards me...all of us on the couch watching TV etc....fond memories
I'll let Nacho know his presence was appreciated! 😊
I love the natural walnut with its beautiful variations in tone. I’ll never understand why someone would want to “tone” that down. Thanks for liberating the beauty of these pieces and sharing their transformation with us!!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching Debbie!
You’ve put your ❤️ and soul into this transformation. Love it. Also love gorgeous Nacho and the bunnies. 😻🐰🐰🐰
Beautiful, I never get tired of looking at mid century furniture. Bless you for rescuing these pieces.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
No one should be giving you advice!! You are so thorough in every piece you touch. I wish I had a tenth of your knowledge! I wish we could clone you a thousand times and save all the good pieces left in the landfill!
🇨🇦 You do the best videos. Nice easy music, nice voice, no fake hyper-dramatic yapping, no power tool noises included (don't know what ever possesses anyone to include that noise in their videos), footage of the animals and fundraisers are entertaining also. The animals break up the restoration footage just right! The whole time you are working on a Smokey piec, I can just smell it from here. I grew up in a both- smoking-parent household. Switching over to the bunnies breaks up that post trauma! Lol
Thank you so much for watching Shilo!
I have a few things to say... First, beautiful job! Second, because of you and your videos I actually reglued a drawer, clamped it and looked for the "squeeze" to make sure I had enough glue. Third, I totally impressed my husband by using 2 clamps that were too small alone but by using them together they did the trick. I have learned so much from watching you work. Keep it up.
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I would have NEVER guessed this gorgeous natural color was under that old finish. Great work. Your video narration is succinct, thoughtful and educational. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
So beautiful!! And thanks for the bunny intermission too. 💕
Thanks so much!
Your attention to detail - finishing these pieces inside and out - is a joy to watch!
Thank you very much!
You never cease to surprise me with the level of your work. These pieces don't just look GREAT, they look WAY WAY better than the original. Walnut is my favorite too (:
I so enjoy meeting fellow Walnut fans, I love it! Thank you so much for watching!
Awe lil Nacho is quickly growing into a handsome dude 🥹. I love that you included the bunny intermission it’s always a welcomed treat. Beautiful refinish amplifying all the natural wood qualities. I wanna touch it it looks so smooth 😆.
Any piece of furniture is lucky to be touched by you........ thanks for the wonderful video....and the great bunny stuff too!
Holy moly Angie. They are sooooo much better now. I can't understand why they didn't celebrate the natural tone. It's gorgeous. Great job as always.
Thank you so much!
How absolutely beautifully restored to their natural beauty - once again
Your work is testament to the saying "Everything old is new again"! Also don't think that your attention to detail hasn't gone unnoticed. As I go thru your videos I can see that your work is top notch.
Wow, thank you!
Oh my goodness, Nacho and those bunnies are just adorable!
Aren't they great?? Thanks so much for watching! 🐰😺
I used Odies Oil on a cherry dining room table 6 months ago. I am so impressed with the beauty of the finish and the water resistance. Am so grateful to you Angie for you promoting this product that has made my family heirloom beautiful again!
You're so welcome Katherine, it's amazing stuff isn't it? Thanks so much for watching!
Who would have thought those blond dressers would turn out so beautiful! Again a testament to your expertise and vision for these pieces!
Thanks so much for watching Brenda!
Errrm … O! M! Goodness!!! What a lovely transformation. You stripped away the artifice, shallow, battered and faded as it was to reveal the true beauty of the wood beneath! Well done.
Thank you very much!
Stunning archival refinishing job!!! Come for the refinishing, Stay for the kitties and bunnies, LOL
Thank you! Cheers!
Oh, Angie! From sad to spectacular! Even the original owners would have liked your work. Love it! 🥰
Thanks so much!!
Angie, both of those pieces turned out so spectacularly, I’m totally impressed by your skill and vision. You do amazing work, you should be so proud of yourself. Nacho is adorable and I love seeing the bunnies. Totally cute addition to your furniture flips. Another great job giving your furniture pieces a one of a kind look. Someone will be blessed to cherish those two pieces for years to come.
Thank you so much Janet, I really appreciate that! 😊
Wow. Just wow. No words - I just keep shaking my head in disbelief at the transformation. Beautiful. From watching your channel I have finally understood about myself that walnut is my favorite - it's timeless and it's the color and grain I think of when I think of wood. Thank you for honoring the true color and beauty of those pieces.
It's absolutely one of mine too, likely my #1. Thanks so much for watching!
WOW!!!
They look gorgeous!
Thank you for rescuing & restoring these; they so so much better in so many ways than they did originalLt. The colors are rich & warm, and the natural grain is just beautiful.
Oooooh, la, la!
Thanks so much Joy!
Wow. Such a beautiful transformation. Love how the wood gets to shine now!
Thank you kindly!
It's truly a work of art !! Your love, care, attention and respect for these pieces shines through! Thank you for doing this and for sharing ❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
Angie these pieces are beautiful. They are a far cry from what they were originally and NEEDED you touch! Another beautiful makeover friend
Aww thank you so much! ❤️☺️
That is such an improvement. Letting the natural wood shine through was such an excellent choice for this set!
Thanks so much for watching!
Love that you were able to rescue these.
I think Nacho may have be thinking where's my treat all the bunnies are getting one. Love that you rescue the bunnies as well as the furniture. ♥️♥️😍😍
Thank you very much! 🐰😺
Simply beautiful, Angie. Hard to imagine trading that beautiful (!!) wood grain for that sallow yellowish monotoned color. The time you took to restore it to its natural glory is evident in the finished product. As usual, BRAVO! Job well done!
Thank you very much!
I use to hate the MCM style furniture until I found your channel. I had no idea that there was beautiful wood hiding under some of these finishes. I was born in 1968 and grew up with this style. So to me, it was just old, ugly furniture. What is funny is that the antique furniture I love is what my grandmother called old, ugly furniture -lol. Maybe growing up around a particular style can make some of us blind to its unique beauty. Thank you for all the lessons I have learned from you.
You're so welcome! I'm glad I could open your eyes to the possibilities. 😊
I think it is fabulous you let the wood shine when you can. Don't listen to the haters. Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you so much!
This set is just beautiful. In my opinion it’s 200% better. Me, myself and I like the red hues of the stains. I have a homemade bookshelf and I really want to paint it red. But I guess I’ll have to wait and see. One again these are beautiful and I love watching your channel. ❤️🙏🏼🌻❤️🙏🏼🌻
Hi every one. Greetings from Greece
I, too, love the natural beauty of the wood grain. You have made those sad pieces beautiful again. Excellent job!
Thank you so much!
I absolutely love your purist approach to refinishing furniture! Keep doing exactly what you do and don't ever change.
I'm so glad you don't 'cut corners' ;). Love your work, as always. Just watched the reveal - every time you make magic happen. The people who threw out this furniture must be kicking themselves - each time!!!!!!!!!
Holy makeover!! Gorgeous! Rich! Beautiful! I like your staging too...clean and simple allowing the furniture to be the focus. Adorable bunnies and cutest kitty!😃
You are a true artist and I fondly wish for you to see how truly talented you are. You bring so much pleasurable character to the furniture you restore while providing a service to the environment and history of of these pieces. I have learned so much from you about veneer and I am almost ashamed to say I used to think it was rubbish furniture but you shed a light for me that proves otherwise and I see now it takes a true master to restore this furniture well and I aspire to be as talented.
Thank you so much for such an incredible comment. I really appreciate the kind words! ❤️
In this video you comment a lot about the mean or disparaging comments people can leave on your channel. I hope you don't let them get to you. Trolls gonna troll and you do beautiful work that honors the pieces. I love watching your videos.
Thank you very much Brittany!
Love these! Just the right amount of MCM for me! I’m seeing this on Nov. 28, 2023. Nacho seems so tiny! The bunnies are big and beautiful, too. How lucky these creatures are to be a part of your and Andrea’s family! ❤️
Thank you so much for this comment. I really appreciate your kind words. ❤️
You made it look 100x's better than the original! Spectacular!! 😍😍😍
Thank you so much!
We’ll done
Glad you mentioned the Howard product and the optional scrapers. It’s helpful to hear your broader thinking process.
I agree 100% with your decision to reveal the natural color of the wood. These look amazing!
Thank you so much for watching!
🐼 Big Panda Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Texas, USA 🐼 ❤ 🎀 👍 🧚♂ 🐈 🧚
Thank you so much! 😊❤️
You don't have to excuse the way you work or treat your furniture. It's your way of working and I think it will be absolutely fantastic.
Don't care what other people think, maybe that's their way of working. And there is always someone who has to criticize, maybe it boosts their self-esteem.
I do not excuse my lack of grammatical knowledge.
👍😉

Thank you so much for watching!
The grain 😍 the warm tones of the walnut 😍 on top of little baby Nacho & the gorgeous bunnies 😍 Thanks for sharing all of it Angie 💚
You're so welcome, I'm so glad you're enjoying all my content!
Stunning!!
Nacho is growing up so fast🥰…I adore Mid Century furniture…thank you for this🙏🏽
You're so welcome!
Every time I watch one of your videos, I’m impressed anew at your artistry. You speak to the wood and do what each piece needs to be its beautiful best. Thank you again for sharing these videos with us - I love watching them! Please take care and be safe 😷. God bless you all 🙏🏻🕊xoxo.
Thank you so much for watching!
Angie Angie Angie missed ya!
Well I love the style and I like the color when I initially saw these pieces.
But oh God, that beautiful wood grain pops now!!!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks for that metal spray for door handles I've tried a couple different types that look okay but the one you used on this project looks so much more like metal.
And the kids are getting along fine there. 😉
Thanks for sharing another awesome restoration. 👍
