  • Welcome to flip It furniture! In this video I go over one of the many furniture flipping basics. How to remove latex paint from a piece of furniture. When doing a furniture makeover sometimes we have to use a chemical stripper to remove an existing finish. The one I use is called Citristrip stripping gel.

    I've just spent a good 45 minutes watching furniture stripping videos and yours is the most helpful and detailed by far. My piece has lots of curved places on the legs and I was stumped as to how to get in there, but you've answered any question I had and some I didn't foresee. Thank you!!!

    I started stripping my kitchen cabinets and got discouraged because of the process, mess and odor from the stripping agent. I'm going out to get the Citrus Strip, plastic wrap, steel wool, and mineral oil. Your process is slow and methodical but effective. Thanks for renewing my motivation.

    I have that same Citrus remover. Used it once and I didn't know about the plastic wrap trick but it didn't come off easily at all and I went out and bought some high-tech remover with the fumes, complete with opening my windows in the middle of winter, it was hard!! Girl, your tenacity is astounding. It's almost miraculous to think that you've learned all this by trial and error. My compliments!

    Awesome channel. I have a project that is long overdue ( 1800 fat lighter table with the original bench) . I actually know who built it. Mr wondel Herndens grandfather made it . I had many dinners sitting at the table. I loved it so much that his wife gave it to me when he passed.
    Some where along the line of handing it down it was painted a few times. Now I know I can do this . Thank you for the great ideas and techniques.

    I just started stripping a small deck out our back door and I wish I'd watched your video first! I used a rag for the mineral spirits and it was not effective! I ran out of daylight but hopefully I can try again tomorrow with some steel wool. There was still a good amount of Citristrip residue and solid color deck stain left. I also wasn't prepared for how time consuming it all is and started later in the day. Definitely going to get an earlier start! Thanks for the info!

    You did it well! You answered my questions so good. I was hesitant to use too much mineral spirits, but you showed that it couldn't hurt a thing! I used the wrap, but some was drying before I finished applying to my large table..but I should have done it in sections as you recommended. I'll keep going using that tip. Thanks for helping with all my questions. I even went to the manufacturer website and it wasn't as good as yours. Thanks so much.

    I love your video. Best one out there because you take the time to explain and show each process. Like you I made a mess by leaving the citrus strip on a cabinet. What a mess. I just don’t know how to clean it up. I’m thinking about starting slow. No one told me about mineral spirit or the steel wool. I just subscribed to your channel and can’t wait to see more. Keep it up!

      I would give it a good cleaning with the steel wool and mineral spirits. That should take most of it off. When it’s dry try sanding off the rest. If it’s still gummy you might have to do one more round of the Citristrip. Starting slow is a great idea. It can be so frustrating LOL patience is key!

    I have used the very toxic strippers in the past and the do work really well. However, due to the high level of toxicity, I researched the best green stripper and decided on citristrip because the table I was refinishing was veneer. I used the wrapping in saranwrap strategy, checked on process, and waited suggested times. The result was it stained the veneer beyond salvage for staining. I had to paint table. I have since discovered that has happened to others as well. I was told the formula has changed from original formula.

    You can use the plastic wrap- pending your piece underneath and the amount of paint you are removing- you can also leave the strip on overnight . The directions said wrap- I had XXXL wood beams I tested on. I actually left on overnight and DID NOT cover. I came back and the paint layers curdled like a halloween latex mask lol and just feel off in large pieces. ... just an option for people who have XXXL jobs and want to try this. I've used on floors and small and now XL residential pieces.

    hi there! I got this beautiful antique dresser for $50 but it had layers of badly done latex paint so I decided to strip it down to bare wood and paint it again. I did the first strip without plastic wrap and I got a bunch off, but I decided to try with plastic wrap and that got so much more off. I wanted to come back to this to thank you for that tip! I wish I'd known this before I used the first bottle but now I'm redoing it with the second bottle (and plastic wrap) before I move into the mineral spirits and steel wool. also, another tip is to apply it on T H I C K and wait for it to look a bit crinkled and it comes off really easily, sometimes with the plastic wrap!

    Is the brush you used metal or nylon?? Also the steel wool. Is it coarse or fine? Loved the 13:07 video
    I am trying to strip paint from an old wooden floor that is painted around the edges and had linoleum in the middle! Any other hints would be must appreciated! I only put on the citristrip and waited 30 minutes and found out that 13:07 was not long enough and left it 2 hours. Came off a little better but sticks in the grain of the wood. Wood had never been finished so it is not entirely flat for the scraper to remove the paint. So I am going to use the plastic wrap and brush and steel wool along with the mineral spirits and see how that goes!!

    My first time was rough. Maybe layers of applied coats had something to do with it

    I'm sorry. I might get eaten for posting this comment, but I feel it REALLY needs posting. I've been trying, and failing MISERABLY attempting to use that very expensive product, Citristrip (I am in Canada) to strip the top off a dresser (old oil based paint).
    The application was thicker than thick, sanded before I attempted to apply the chemical, and cleaned off with mineral spirits before the application. I then sealed the surface with a ton of Saran Wrap, and came down to the project every 20 minutes to smoosh the chemical around, apply more, etc.
    That dresser barely lost even 1 layer of paint, and that was on a couple of sections only. As a result, I ended up having to sand the living daylights out of that dresser to get that paint off. The scraper didn't work with the Citristrip at all, but on a section of the dresser I did NOT treat with Citristrip, it actually did a better job scraping the paint down to the wood than the section that was treated.
    At this time, you cannot even buy this crud here, unless you are willing to sell your children to pay for it at Amazon prices.
    So...all these Hosanna's about this product aren't always deserved. I've used the left over stuff that came in these pathetically teeny pour containers to strip flaking varnish off of a table top, and...it was as effective as the paint it never removed. It also made the wood very splotchy, and no amount of sanding seems to be helping to even out the tone it destroyed.
    Stuff is not good, it's awful (at least the stuff sold here), and clearly is destructive to wood when it does manage to get past the paint layer.

    Can you just put citristrip all over and then just remove the plastic wrap to work on the sections? I'm wondering if that would save time. Anothe video I saw suggested leaving the citristrip/plastic wrap on for 2 hours, so I thought maybe this would work because there would be no harm in leave it on for longer in some parts while working on the others.

    As I understand it, Citri Strip changed their formula a short while back. Less VOCs and other chemicals. Safer, but maybe less effective. I am trying today my first stripping job, no pun intended. Oh, I think wood finishes are already beginning to make a comeback in some circles.

      Yes, Your right! Natural wood is back ☺️
      I’m using Citristrip tomorrow on a big bookshelf. Using the plastic wrap really helps.

    How does the metal brush not scratch the wood??? Or do I have to be really careful?

    • @FlipItFurniture
      @FlipItFurniture  2 года назад +1

      Hi Alexis! There are 3 different brushes. Nylon, copper and brass. Nylon is the softest. You can use nylon for wood. It shouldn’t scratch it. I would still be careful when you begin. After a few minutes you will get the feel of how hard or soft you need to go with the brush.

    Why not apply all of the citrus gel and cover in sections. Then only remove one section at a time? You wouldn’t have to wait 40 min for each section

  • @myyt3824

    Paint stripping is just a long ass process, but this is probably the easiest! You just need to go section by section. I’m about to do this to my banister and door frames because the lady I bought my house from slapped the WORST paint I’ve ever seen on EVERYTHING. It peels if you just touch it.

    I am curious. This is new info for me. Would it not be faster to put the stripper on all of the table and then wrap it in the tarp for 40 minutes?

    • @FlipItFurniture
      @FlipItFurniture  2 года назад +1

      Hi Ray, You could definitely do that way. I prefer doing it in sections because of the mess. When you’re working with the whole piece at once by the time you finish your mineral wash in one section the citristrip tends to dry up in another section causing chaos. For me working section by section Keeps things clean and organized.
