Awesome video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for the kind words, I'm so glad you found the information helpful, thanks for watching 😊
@@CoastalUpcycling as ZAZA ada Q
This is the first honest video about stripping with Citristrip I have seen. I thought I might have some crazy non-scrapable varnish because other videos made it seem like one coat and you’re done but that’s obviously not always the case. Feeling much better about my project. You may have just saved my grandmas antique hutch from the dump. Thanks!
I've stripped quite a pieces to this point, and I have yet to apply one coat and have all the varnish come off. Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you're able to save the hutch. This is our way of reducing-reusing-recycling! Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help, thanks for watching 😀
No you need to leave the stripper on longer than he’s doing here. Then you would say yeah but it will dry out. That’s why you use the plastic wrap like he said.
I rarely bother to sign on just to comment, but I have to say how much I appreciate that last little plastic wrap tip!!! Thank YOU!
Thank you so much for the kind words!! I'm so glad you found the information helpful. Thanks for watching 😁
Thank you! This was incredibly helpful. I bought CitriStrip yesterday to refinish an old cedar chest, and tried it earlier today on the top of the chest with marginal results.. Boy, I wish I'd watched your video FIRST! The instructions on the CitriSrip container are so abbreviated and incomplete. Yours are detailed and clear, with lots of practical advice. I know the rest of the project is going to go so much more smoothly, thanks to you.
I appreciate this video. It covered everything I needed to know, the basics, and didn’t waste time with fluff. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words, and thank you for watching 😀
Thank you for your time in making this video. I needed some assistance here because I'm about to refinish a dining room set and I have no idea what I'm doing! This definitely helped me.
Thank you so much. The plastic wrap tip is a real help when dealing with multiple layers!
This stuff works!
I used it 5 years ago to remove several layers of paint from an antique brass bed. It was awesome.
Great tips ! I had used this product on a old cedar chest back in the 90s and it came out great. I tried it again today on veneer and obviously didn't use enough. I will be armed for the second go around with plastic wrap as well. Thanks again !
Covering with Saran Wrap will keep product from drying out
Yeah, I found that is a great way to keep the workable time open longer.
I just cut the bottoms out of plastic bags from Target or Walmart or wherever, cut the handles off, and cut them open. Make a big stack, apply the Citristrip in sections and slap on a bag. Sticks like crazy, and lift off hours and hours later. Makes the stripper penetrate into multiple layers, and can remove virtually ALL the paint coats with one application.
It would have been helpful to see what it looks like between chemical stripping and sanding.
Thank you for this video! Very clear and informative :)
Yeah it definitely is a must-have if you have a piece that is heavily stained or you know that it's going to take multiple coats to completely strip it...I learned this the heard way on old antique tables that I restore . Send it down really good and wipe it clean then put a thick coat of the citra on it and then wrap it Saran wrap and try to leave it overnight or twelve hours day ..however...for me it's just easier to do it at night and I get up the next morning and my table is ready to scrape down.. it's not a fix all butit really makes a huge difference if you are having a difficult time getting stain off .. it keeps the citrus wet longer so that it works longer when needed.
This was very helpful. This was my first try at stripping and I left it too long and it dried. After watching this I reapplied the gel and the paint came off beautifully
Will this work ok on formica countertops that have been painted over as well. I'm assuming it will strip it...
Thank you so much for doing this! I am tackling cabinets in my kitchen that need a lot of paint taken off. The previous homeowner put a thick layer of very shiny latex paint over everything in the house. Luckily, the paint comes off in sheets because they didn't prep the cabinets or walls before putting it on. This will be SO much nicer than sanding everything.
Thanks for providing ALL the various tips with this product, like avoiding over-brushing, liberal application, a light sanding first, etc. I've had 2 rounds with this product and swore it was a waste of time and money but it clearly doesn't activate like others I've used. I'll be applying all of your tips shown here and I'm looking forward to seeing what'll happen on round 3. Thanks again, new subscriber here!
Yes, I absolutely swear by using plastic wrap...it helps keep the product active longer. Hope the 3rd round works out, thanks for watching 😀
Your video was very informative. I have used citristrip stripping gel and have seen how it start to dry up after 15 minutes or so so I appreciate the cellophane wrap tip alot as this will help product work longer. I also learned about using the low mineral spirits for clean up. 👍
So glad you found it helpful! Thanks for commenting 😊
I wish I would have watched this yesterday.. Good tips thank you
Very informative, I liked the additional advice that others passed on to you. Thank you
Great job . Extremely informative and the plastic wrap is an awesome help tip!
Thank you and keep up the great work & videos!
I am glad I watched this. I am also glad that you said you may have to apply 2 or 3 three times because that is what I am in the process of doing. Very informative. Thank you for being specific, sometimes the little things matter. :)
Hi Traci, thank you for the kind words...you're absolutely right, the small things make all the difference. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you for this video! I’m using this product for the second time (first with an 1900s medicine chest painted in SO many layers) but now more prepared to tackle a 1900s family heirloom walnut wardrobe that one of my ancestors painted institutional grey! So excited to have the insider tips so I can do this fast and correctly and my convertible back in the garage! #worksmarternotharder!
👍...sorry about the drab color😬..but glad to hear about the sweet ride!!!! Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching 😁
Best video Ive seen on youtube thus far. Clear , concise, no fluff, bias, ads, etc. Thanks man, definitely me with my project.
Very informative. I should have watched this video before I applied my first coat because you gave great information and tips on how to make the product work effectively.
Overall very good info. I've used this product also, to strip a banister of multiple paint layers; in that case, letting the material stay on the wood for a longer period of time (few hours) is better. 15 minutes is really not much time for the product to work on most things - but perhaps thin layers of finish will come off in that time frame.
I am currently uses this for the 1st time and your video was extremely helpful, thanks!
So glad we could help, thanks for watching😊
I love your video. I have a pine desk "Pine Shop" with original pulls. I tried removing the "stain/varnish" in a small spot with no success. Then your video.....so clear with instructions and I am so excited to restore this wonderful desk that has been in the family for years. I feel much more secure proceeding from your video. Thank you!!!!!!
BEST video on Citrus Strip. Thank you for giving us products to have handy when striping paint off products with Citrus Strip. Plus you get straight to the point. I appreciate you doing this video. I'm running to the store right now to get a few items I don't have.
Very helpful, going to give this a go this weekend!
Good luck, thanks for watching 😀
I love this stuff just started using it and it smells like orange clean! It's kinda mesmerizing to scrape the paint off. I'm using this to remove spray paint off an old armoire.
Just because it smells nice does NOT mean it's ok to breathe. You should be wearing an N95 chemical respirator and be in a ventilated area whenever you're using any kind of chemical stripper.
Haven’t sanded first but will from now on. Love Citristrip.
I was gifted a kitchen table and want to strip and stain it. This is my first project like this and I'm excited! Your video is perfect! Thanks a lot!
Wow! How exciting! Thank you so much for the kind words and thank you for watching. 😊
I'm in the process of using Citristrip to strip an old red mahogany dressing table with very detailed, turned legs, and was having a bear of a time until I found your video. The plastic wrap really works great! Many, many thanks for the tip! 👍😊
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you for watching😊
Thank you for such a thorough demonstration!
Absolutely! Thank you for watching☺
Very inforrmative video. The process is of using Citristrip is explained clearly and demonstrated well. Really appreciate the tip on using plastic wrap to enhance moisture retention. Well done!!!
Love the video. I have an old leafed end table that I need to strip. I have the Citristrip and am ready to go. Following your instructions to the letter. Thank you, this was extremely informative! Ms. SLP
Cutting the old card to scrape tight spots is genius!
Thanks Haylie! And thank you for watching😊
I need to find an old CC. Great tip!
Thanks for the great tips! Thumbs up!
Glad we can help, thanks for watching!
Perfect...absolutely perfect instructions for my project. No one would have ever learned these precise instructions from reading the label on the product...it saved me a lot of unnecessary guesswork. Thanks.
Eric, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you were able to get the information you needed. Please let me know if you have any stripping, refinishing or painting questions, I'd be glad to help. Thank you for watching 😊
Excellence video. It works. I uses the plastic wrap idea overnight.
Very, helpful for a 1st-time enthusiast. Very clear and easy to understand. Thank you….
Love this video! I’m about to venture on my 1st refinishing project (hopefully more to do). I work at Home Depot haha and was wondering which product to choose, I was leaning towards Citristrip because of lower odor and less chemical. Thank you for sharing and I’ll be picking up the supplies from the helpful list you provided. Please please keep making more videos! I’ve subscribed and will share with family/friends who are DIYers!
Thank you so very much for the kind words. Good luck on your project...let me know how it goes👍 Thanks for watching!😀
Coastal Upcycling well I used the Citristrip along with the plastic wrap! GREAT results! Thank you SO MUCH for the informational video! Do you have any additional tips on the detailed crevices on furniture? Thx again!
Thank you for the video! This was really helpful!
Glad I could help, thanks for watching😊
Thanks, great video. I made the mistake of trying to wash out the gel with soap and water. This raised the grain of the wood and made lots of extra work for myself. If I use the stripper again I will do what you did, only washing the piece with mineral spirits.
Great video. I forgot the mineral spirits oh oh how do I clean it out? Soap and water rag?
This was a wonderful video. Would you do a start to finish on a small item? That way we can learn how to refinish correctly. Would appreciate it!
Absolutely...and I think I have the perfect piece for that video! Thanks for watching😃
Excellent video! Thank you for making it.
Thank you. I am new to Citristrip, and your video was very helpful. You are a good speaker and shared some great information.
Thank you for this video! It makes me want to finally restore my mcm side table this weekend.
How do you dispose of the scraped off citrus strip in the metal can? Must the receptical you use to hold the scraped off citrus strip he metal? Are the ragsbuou wipe down sadento wash and use again or must you dispose of them? And what's the safety protocol there?
Great questions! The receptacle used can be metal or plastic. Choose one with a wide mouth to make sludge catching easy. I use old coffee cans because I can throw the whole thing away in the garbage. You may want to consider using an old sauce pan. The handle makes it easy to carry with one hand while scraping with the other. Then you can pour the sludge out into the garbage and reuse the pot again...(for CitriStrip only of course!!!! Please don't use it for food again!!!😬). As for the wiping rags, I like blue shop towels. They are thick, sturdy and disposable. Always take any safety precaution you feel you need to. Keep on your splash goggles, gloves and respirator until the CitriStrip sludge is disposed of. Also contact your local city/municipal solid waste people and ask about paint and chemical disposal. I hope this information helps, thanks for watching😀
I believe that I saw something that said to let the sludge dry completely before throwing it out. I’m not sure if that was for Citristrip or something else that was more toxic.
I tried the Citristrip with the plastic wrap and it worked great! The piece I was doing had several old layers of paint so I did have to do the process 3 times but I was able to get all of the paint off! Thank you!
So glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching Lourdes😄
Hi, I was hoping you might share how long you left the plastic wrap on before scraping each time, or if there an optimum wait time suggested when using the plastic wrap trick. Thanks!
@@Thegreggymiller Hi - I usually leave it on atleast 4-6 hours. Sometimes I even leave it overnight. As long as the plastic wrap is on, it keeps it moist so that it keeps working. Good luck
Wrapping the item in plastic wrap was a great tip. I left the wrap on for about 30 minutes. It works great!
Are you a teacher? If you are not. You should be. You have great teaching skills. 😊 Thanks for the video!
Great video. I used the Citrus strip aerosol version, and the paint on stuff. I found the aerosol to work better for some reason. I don't know if maybe it's a different formula. It was, spray on, 20 minutes, bam, it all comes off. I don't know if it's more potent or what. I also tried leaving the aerosol citrus on for longer and 20 mins seemed the same as 3 hrs.
Great info...I look forward to trying out the spray can version! Thanks for watching☺
When it’s wet it’s working.. that actually is really good advice!!
That’s what she said
Thank you, this was exactly what I was looking for and extremely informative. I’ll definitely be using your link for my favorite spot; The Home Depot!
I'm so glad you found this video helpful. I know you will enjoy using thos product. Please keep me posted with your project and let me know of there is anything I can do to help😁 Thanks for watching!
great video, thanx for posting! very informative and clear review!
so glad you found it helpful!
Try the green magic strip by zinsser. I've found it stays active a lot longer, so I just leave it on overnight, and it can be a one step process. Rinsing with a little water works very easily with that product too.
I love Zinsser products! I can't wait to try it👍
Ditto on the plastic wrap...i usually leave it to sit for 2-4 hours, too.
Wish me luck I’m about to start stripping my 1907 mehlville clark full size upright piano. Some time assuming in the 60s it was “modernized” rather than refinished so it has the original finish with a nice layer of white paint and gold over that. I’m super exited to finish this restoration since it is a beautiful walnut construction. Thanks for the video!
Awesome, good luck!
Great Information! Love the links and the extra piece tidbit at the very end!
Thank you so much for the kind words. If there is anything you have questions on please don't hesitate to ask, thanks for watching 😊
Since this is the first time using I would have like to see how the second round of stripping was. And how it progressed to the final piece. But great video overall!
Thanks for the comment, yes I will include more rounds of citristrip in future videos, thank you for watching 😊
I'm going to try this on my bathroom cabinets but have a question after the Citrus stripping and wiping the gunk off do I have to put anything on the cabinets to remove any leftover chemical or do I just let it dry and start standing? A million thank yous
Hi Nesa, that's a great question. Right after removing all the gunk, I like to "wash" the piece with mineral spirits. This ensures that all the CitriStrip is removed. Let the piece completely dry, overnight us best. Then you can start the sanding. Hope this helps, thanks for watching☺
@@CoastalUpcycling thank you !
Thank you mate, I just bought this to give the seating on my boat some TLC. Much appreciated.
👍awesome, glad to hear that!!! Please let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help. Thanks for watching 😀
Very informative and appreciate the tips provided, as well as the link to the refurbish gentleman. I will begin work on an old wooden chair this weekend so it can be painted yellow for my wife's classroom. The chair will be used to read to second graders. I am looking forward to the project and thanks so much for your great insight and expertise.
In glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with the chair, I'm sure it will turn out great! Thank you for watching☺
@@CoastalUpcycling Thank you for your prompt reply and confidence in me. Any recommendation on low-fume mineral spirits?
@@stevencarney3 Any product you can find from the large home improvement stores will be good...make sure you have plenty of ventilation and protective eyewear and gloves.
never thought about the cling wrap thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes absolutely...it helps the citristrip stay on and working longer! I wish I came up with that clever idea...I learned that trick from The Refurbished Gentleman...you should check out his channel also! Thanks for watching 😀
The problem with this video is his misuse and misunderstanding of the product. One layer is enough. But he should have covered the piece in Saran or plastic wrap. That will keep it wet for several hours or up to one day and will effectively break down the varnish so that when he takes the plastic off and scrapes it, it all comes off. Because he’s not letting it sit long enough that’s why it’s not able to come off effectively. But I recommend covering it in plastic to seal in the moisture! Hope this helps someone or anyone who is watching this and decides to use the product.
Came here to say exactly this!
He eventually does. See the end
This is exactly what I need. So glad I found this video. Extremely helpful!
Hi Rita, thank you for the kind words...I'm so glad you found the information helpful. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you... very informative and complete on your instructions. You are easy to listen to and ... I get it! Thanks also for the bonus tip with the plastic wrap. Going to work on refinishing some dining room chairs ... can't wait to use the Citristrip and follow your instructions. Like cutting up Credit cards! Looks like a great special tough spot tool. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the kind words. Good luck on your project...now if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, I'd be glad to help where I can. Thank you for watching 👍
Maybe tell how to safely dispose of used brushes, rags or the gunk?
Yes , absolutely...thank you for watching 😊
Great video but would have liked to see you get the stain off the second round not just show us another drawer that you had already completely sanded but thanks!
Yesterday I made a mistake -- I let the CitriStrlilp dry. What a nightmare. This video just solved my problem. I watched another one of your video on how to strip furniture. As a novice, I had no products or equipment. I appreciated that you provided a detailed list of what was needed. Thanks so much for your help.
Hi Jeanie Q, I'm so glad you found the information helpful. If you have any other questions on refinishing tips or techniques, please let me know, I'd be happy to help where I can😊...thanks for watching!
You did a great job! it was very informative and thanks for the cellophane wrap tip I feel more confident in taking on a cabinet door stripping. Thanks!

I did it too. This is what I used Woodglut designs for
Thank you so much! Those plans are brilliant !
STRAIGHT TO THE POINT!!! no unnecessary intro dance song skit thank you
Thanks for the lesson! After watching your video I feel bettered prepared for stripping my kitchen cabinets.
Bring back the old Zipstrip that removed everything in ten minutes. The hell with all these candyass safeguards.

BRING BACK SMOKING ON COMMERCIAL AIRPLANES TOO!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Carol Allison haha you very funny Carol!!!
This stuff works. I stripped my cabinets about twenty years ago. Low odor, and thick. The other stuff that smelled AWFUL, did not work as well as you remember. Not any better than this stuff. Trust me, I've used both.
This was a great help. I'm about to start stripping my very first piece of furniture. Thank you.

I put spindles from a chair in a bag with citrus strip and sealed it in a vacuum sealer. Let it sit over night turning as much as I could. Worked great
This helped me out! Thank u! I'm making a shelf right now and had to use wood that had paint on it.
The plastic wrap was brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks to much work. I like “Klean Strip Stripper” because I want to “get in and get out” I do not want to do (extra chores, Cling wrap) procedures when dealing with toxic chemicals!
However, good video because you took your time explaining: precautions, safety methods necessary to maintaining a safe working environment when handling toxic chemicals🥰!

Very informative video, great instructions. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome video. Very informative. Thank you for posting.
I started my very first piece. I cleaned and repaired (minimal). I get so nervous when doing something like this, that I’ve never done before. Your video convinced me that I could do it and I have watched a TON of videos on this! I DID IT!!! It was incredibly easy and I was anxious for NO reason. I had already planned to cover it in plastic so… now, we wait. I plan on leaving it for several hours in hopes to have the mineral spirits dry by morning. I’m super stoked and even more, I’m relieved. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I subbed 😊
Hi Mastiff Mom, thank you for the kind words, I'm so glad you found the information helpful! Pleaee let me know if there is any other questions I can help with, thanks for watching 😊
@@CoastalUpcycling it didn’t work.
I cleaned it up with mineral spirits and I’m letting it sit for a couple of days. Can I sand it next or do I have to redo Citristrip & mineral spirits? There are a lot of flippers who scuff sand then paint. I REALLY want to stain the top and drawer but I also just want to finish it. Can you recommend?
@@mastiffmom2592 I won't lie to you...stripping wood is a bit of a tedious process, Buuuuut, it's so worth it!!!!!!! I love stained wood up against painted furniture pieces. The thing to remember is stripping agents, like citristrip only work when its wet. You have to keep it wet for it to do its job, hence the plastic. Now, the plastic isn't fool proof either, the citristrip gel can still dry out, but not to worry, apply another round of citristrip with a piece of #0000 steel wool, re-wetting the area, then scrape immediately. You may have to repeat this process a couple times, but trust me you hard work will be rewarded. Once down to bare wood, give the top a good sanding, just make sure you don't sand through veneer if that's what you have. Good luck👍
@@CoastalUpcycling I went ahead and stained it. It looks pretty darn good if I say so myself. I’m letting the stain dry tonight. Tomorrow, I paint. No, it’s not perfect but I love it. Once it’s painted… it’s going to look gorgeous!
@@mastiffmom2592 awesome! I'm glad it turned out well👍
