Most soda company’s have requirements in their contracts that certain eateries must offer free refills , they in turn get bulk priced syrup boxes , and why would a soda company want you to be addicted to caffeine? This is the idea. So if you are at a larger food chain and there are “ no refills “ , mention it to the vendor. I’ve seen Pepsi pull machines because of it in a store in the middle of lunch.

I have to correct you on one thing, the "REAL" reason as to why things like single candy bars, 20oz sodas, and single serve snacks are at the cash registers is "NOT" so that the customers will be more likely to purchase them when getting to the register, it's to prevent shoplifters from eating/drinking them on the sales floor and throwing the wrappers/bottles back on the shelf, it's to deter shoplifting since these items are more likely to be stolen if placed deeper in the aisles

Of course the samples are there to encourage you to buy that product! This is not a scam, it's common sense! It's a form of advertising. Advertising is designed to get you to buy stuff. Sometimes you discover things you didn't know anything about and decide to take that home with you. No one is forcing you to purchase the sampled product.

I don't believe the drink refills thing. The only places I have been to w/o free refills are small independent restaurants. Most of the chains get the refill cost upfront. A fountain soft drink is ridiculously cheap for the seller. People paying $2 or more for a drink at the drive through, a drink that will never be refilled, more than cover the 1 guy who dines in and drinks a gal of soda. Heck, the $2 probably covers more than the gal.

You should do a story on counterproductive moves by companies. We see the best parking spots saved for people that don't even get out of the car, discouraging people to want to shop inside where the store could benefit from impulse shopping. A similar thing is pre-pay gas. If I pull my card for gas, I'm less inclined to go inside where I might buy a candy car or drink. I think some menus are harmful to sales. Because there are many people that have trouble with English, they use more pictures, meaning you see less listed items which causes me frustration and a desire to buy less not knowing what my favorite items cost. Also, as I don't have a cell, I avoid Target where I know there best sales are on cartwheel that I can't access, so I avoid them for stores that provide discounts for everyone.

ANOTHER tactic used by supermarkets is to move products around as to prevent customers to (what we call in Britain) bot shopping. People who go into a store with a list where they know where all the products are and force them to look at different stuff.

Actually groceries are categorized and grouped by an “OLD ORDER BOOK” that use to be a paper order (actual book) that was sent to a store every week or several times a week-“ONLY ONE ORDER BOOK FOR THE ENTIRE STORE” for every truck load of groceries. When every order had to be done in pencil/special markers and then called(phoned) into the warehouse before you could get your order, so that every “stocker” was responsible for a certain section of the grocery store had to make their own order--it had to be made as simple a process as possible. The order book also gave the case “cost” and depending on your store’s policy you figured out how much an item cost. If you can remember or find a copy of an old paper grocery order book-- you can most often find the item that you are looking for in any US grocery store.

When I was 12 I once went to a McDonald's on a road trip somewhere in the middle of Pennsylvania. Turnpike something. The fries had so much salt I could barely eat them and they not only had no free refills on drinks, but the drinks were severely overpriced. Even though I wasn't paying for any of this I noticed the scam for what it was and knew they only got away with it because, being along a major highway stop, they didn't expect repeat business anyway.
Suffice to say we never returned on subsequent trips through the area.

I've never understood why so many people get duped by these tactics, especially considering the vast majority of people have worked in grocery or retail at some point. When you work in these places, you're literally told about the tactics and are expected to adhere to them at all times. Don't even get me started on retail jobs that require you to badger customers with add-ons. I worked for three places like that and I hated every moment. As a customer myself, I know d*mn well that I don't want to get hounded at checkout when all I wanna do is pay and leave. But we were forced to do it, or else we'd get written up or even terminated. I know a lot of you can relate to those micromanaging bosses that would peak their heads around corners to make sure you're asking a customer if they want to add a candy bar to their order for no effing reason. 😩 Don't fall for this crap, people, and don't get angry at the employee. Trust me, they hate doing it.
Back on track, these mind tricks should be easy to understand, especially when food is involved. Obviously the places wanna make more money, so a person should walk in with the expectation that that's the company's end goal for every customer. I was raised to be frugal, albeit by a woman who trusts no one, so I'm unable to fall for corporate tricks unless I'm not completely coherent.
I'd also like to add that it's completely okay to treat yourself when you're out grocery shopping. Just make sure that the treat is on a good sale. If it's not, find an alternative that is. You deserve treats, but you shouldn't have to break the bank to get them. :)

Thanks! I always wanted to walk into a grocery store to be greeted by the foul smell of rotten garbage, or go on a date to a fancy restaurant only to be given ear damage by maximum-volume heavy metal, (and don’t forget those gold ol’ eye ache-inducing lights!) Oh and I hate free food. My money is just burning a hole in my pocket! I also hate candy bars so much, that I want them to be less likely to be sold by making them less visible, so there’s less demand! In fact, I hate everything so much that I want the companies that provide everything to suffer! To speak on behalf of everyone, we don’t like walking into a restaurant and finding an item with ingredients we like. It’s the worst!

    Music in grocery stores.
Depending on when or what time of the day it
is, - the genre of music
will be very different. The reason is obvious as is the effort.
    The grocery store is
    very well planned out.
    The whole idea and
effort is to get you to
    spend your money.
    'Every' single tiny -
    seemingly insignif-
    icant thing is very
    well planned.
    People seem to
    forget that it is a
    business.

While watching this I have filled my stomach with blended two handfuls of home grown, today picked, raspberries, banana and kefir with a bit of strawberry syrup for extra sweetness. I know what I go to the shop for and I won't be made to buy stuff I don't want to buy. I might buy more than I planned, but that is OK, it is things I would eventually buy anyway at some point. Even if I wasn't aware all those tactics, they didn't scam me if I didn't buy any of that. You won't find chocolates or most junk in my trolley and I tend to go for supermarket's own brand which is cheaper. No way I am going to pay 2-3x more for a branded item, unless it is unique and there aren't many like that that I couldn't live without. So when I see the programs when families are asking for help to cut their grocery shopping I don't understand why they cannot figure it out themselves? They are well off, meaning they have a higher education most of the time, they aren't stupid... how they cannot make it by themselves?

In the UK legislation was passed in 2021 (The Food (Promotion and Placement) (England) Regulations 2021)prevent stores from putting sweets, chocolate and crisps next to the cash register. The aim was to assist with addressing obesity. Kids in line with treats right in their faces nag their parents to buy, and the parents buy to shut them up. And adults, they just get tempted!

@Ted G Ottinger It's important to understand that businesses exist to sell their products or services, and marketing strategies such as offering samples are designed to create awareness and attract customers. While it's true that samples are intended to entice customers to make a purchase, it's ultimately the customer's decision whether or not to buy. 😁

As for free samples, there aren't many these days. I've eaten free samples, and I'm not compelled to buy the item. I don't like spending a lot of time grocery shopping or shopping at all, I know what I want and I stick to the items on my list. @Gary Leonard Teacher It's not uncommon for some fast-food restaurants, including McDonald's, to play loud and upbeat music to encourage faster customer turnover. The idea behind this strategy is to create an energetic and dynamic atmosphere that motivates customers to finish their meals quickly and leave, making space for new customers to come in. 🎶

How come a Big Mac is $4 when it has only one piece of cheese with two meat patties, yet two double cheese burgers cost $4 and have 4 meat patties and 4 pieces of cheese; no 3 part bun, but 4 parts!? Watch for the new "plant based" craze.

In the grocery store we usually shop at the bakery and the meat and deli are all along one of the short sides, and the entrances are approximately in the middle of the long side. No freshly baked bread smells when you enter that store, possibly from the café though which is near one of the entrances
The lightning at burger joints here in my country is usually relatively soft, and Burger King has music playing. It may not be fine dining, but fast food places here offer a pretty good eating experience (even though the food lefts a bit to be desired)
