This is definitely the kind of show where you can just listen to the cast recording and immediately go "oh, that's why this actor won a Tony". Bringing that voice to the stage every night and carrying those emotions for eight performances a week is awe-inspiring
I hated Aida but I loved Heather Headly she was the only thing that I liked about the show Heather's career never really took off her first cd was great but she took long breaks from show biz and put her family first she's a smart lady she knows what and who really matters!
The thing about the Tonys is, there aren't any other major Broadway awards shows that will give you a fair idea of whether you will win or not. So truly the nominees have no idea what to expect.
i love watching the oscars but i do kinda wish that it wasnt like a prerequisite for an actor to win one of the 4: golden globes, critics choice, BAFTA or screen actor guild awards to win the oscar. Like it makes it much more political and about narratives instead of merit. Tonys are actually the fairest imo

It's must've been a thrill for Marin mazzie, audra mcdonald, heather headley, Toni collette, and Rebecca luker, to hear their named being read by Kenneth Branagh, who is, in my mind, one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of our time
SERIOUSLY... Nick Mayor take notes... Heather Headley was one of the FEW women to EVER beat Audra McDonald at the TONYS ... They didnt make that choice lightly...
I like both girls equally and they have voices you absolutely cannot compare anyone else to. Not to mention, Audra and Heather a year later co-starred as Deena and Lorrell in the 20th anniversary concert performance of Dreamgirls.
ReneeDeborah I saw it twice with Jennifer and while she was really good, she still wasn't as strong as the rest of her cast mates (understandably so- this was her first time doing theater PERIOD). But Cynthia Erivo who plays Celie is absolutely phenomenal!! I went into the theater excited about JHud and left talking non-stop about Cynthia haha. Even the thought of seeing Cynthia & Heather onstage together is sooo exciting!!

josh miller I found out from the comments it is apparently Kenneth Branaugh who directed the first Thor film and nearly every Shakespeare film from the 90’s. He was also in The Road to El Dorado as Miguel (the more relaxed one).

In 98 it was Natasha Richardson for Cabaret. And in 94 it was Audra McDonald for Carousel. I'm hoping one day she gives the performance of a lifetime, and no one can beat her that year, and she will finally get a much deserved and well earned Tony.

Audra is amazing. However, Heather killed it.
She was also Audra's understudy in Ragtime before it came to Broadway but she booked Lion King instead.
