Binoche gave one of the most powerful performances ever! This was one of the few times when the Academy made a choice based on merit, rather than sympathy or fondness and popularity
English patient. French actress . American award. I can't forget the last crying when she looked in the eye of Almasy even though I watched the movie 20 years ago. Absolutely she deserves it.
Binoche was why I loved the English Patient so much. She made you feel exactly what she was seeing and hearing throughout the movie. And at the end of the movie, when she looks into the sun , the skies and trees, ah....She was great and deserved the win.☺
Lauren graciously assimilated what was going on, though you can tell from her look that she is really sad inside. The saddest thing of it all is that, yes, they gave her an honorary Oscar later in 2009 in a separate ceremony and she wasn't even invited to come on stage on the Anual Academy Awards ceremony to deliver a speech. Such an iconic actress so underrated.
Bacall was stunned for a second when Binoche's name was called instead of hers. But then she regained her composure, and characteristically brought forth that Bacall class and coolness that she has always been famous for throughout her life.
Juliette stole our hearts in this movie. She was amazing with her heartfelt performance. It was her , I remember most of all in The English Patient. She deserved the Oscar.
Bacall's role had Oscar written all over it. The Academy has been recognising those kinds of performances for years. Look at the history books; loud-mouted, cocksure, often histrionic characters get a nomination or even the award sometimes. From Shelley Winters to Estelle Parsons and Marisa Tomei to Mira Sorvino, these kinds of roles always attract attention. I was glad Juliette won, it was a quiet but sweet performance. And she's an amazing actress.
Remember this moment makes me so happy, Juliette deserved that. She is the most amazing actress today in all film world I think, since Bleu by Krzysztof Kieślowski.
@@mysy05 Oops! Anyway, dont think she's been able to surpass "Bleu". Came close with "Certified Copy", very close. But she beat Lauren Bacall '97...THE LEGENDARY Lauren Bacall, hello? AMAZING! :o

Lauren is a gem. If you read her book she lays out this entire night. She was nervous as hell, and NOT puffed up or expecting to win; she just wanted to so badly. Her family wanted her to win even more then she did so yes he was disappointed and because he DIDN'T have to make the nice face that she did. He didn't. @Liam Why? Most Americans don´t realize there is a movie "industry" outside of the USA. But there is. When I watch the Oscars it´s all SOOOO predictable...so mainstream.
Fun fact Juliette Binoche was one of Steven Spielberg's first actress choices to play Dr. Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park. And was even offered the role of Dr. Sarah Harding in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
When I watched that year, I thought Lauren Bacall was going to win that night, as did most everyone who followed the competition. It was that particular moment, in fact, that I learned never to believe that a nominee is a sure thing at the Oscars, no matter how much he/she/it is touted to be so. I actually think that they got it right though in selecting Binoche, as I thought that she truly gave the best performance out of the nominees.
@@danieliliadis Yes, Glenn Close should have won a LONG time ago (so insane that she doesn't even have ONE Oscar).
