What made that scene so effective was that in every other movie where something like that was about to happen, the camera would cut away at the last second to the victim or the perpetrator and so we were expecting that to happen this time too and so we didn't look away...making the act so much more shocking.

She truly was Annie Wilkes in that movie, it wasnt acting at that point. It is an absolute pleasure to watch such talented acting accompanied by such an amazing book/story. She really took her first major role and swung it out of the park big time, that movie is Stephen kings favorite adaptations of his books and I’m sure Kathy bates is a big part of that. Born Rebel Yeah, that's pretty regretful. But, I can't help to think, how can actors (or actresses) think like that about a villain role. So, they're afraid that people will think that they;re really a bad person if they play a villain?
On a side note, without disrespecting the quality of actors, if it's not Anthony Hopkins, maybe the character would not be this popular, who knows.

Erepyon I made a mistake in my post. Robert Duvall presented another Silence of the Lambs Oscar of course. I don't think Stallone or Bruce Willis have ever played bad guy roles. I'd bet it's because they are largely controlled by the business that Hollywood is.
