My favorite scene in this movie . . . when Mac grabbed the mini-gun and opened up into the jungle, nobody hesitated, nobody asked any questions. Everybody just came over and opened up in the same direction. So gratifying watching them just come together without a word and level the jungle going after that predator. Everyone was like, whatever the hell it is, KILL IT!

This is actually a strategy which in military terms is known as the ''Mad Minute'', where basically a military unit shoots a combined force of suppressing fire in the same direction for a period of one minute. This action is usually done in the case that nothing else is working out in an environment where you cannot clearly see the enemy. It's basically the logic of ''if we all shoot together several rounds we're bound to hit something.''

The thing I love about this movie is that all the tough guy commandos are terrified the entire time. Predator is basically a slasher movie that replaces horny teenagers with soldiers, and everyone on the creative team understood that assignment.
In the original script, Arnold’s character was supposed to beat the Predator in a hand to hand fight. Arnold objected, “there’s no way. He’s a monster, I’m just a man. He’d kick my ass.”
That change made the movie into a classic.

    YES!!!
MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE!!
Facts you didn't know about the movie:
Jane Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit, which looked like an lizard insect hybrid.
He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused.
Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch, being 7'2".
The PREDATOR suit was designed and created by Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios, whom would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990.
Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Spielberg and Ford on Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed.
No hot meals were allowed due to a heatwave in Mexico, so they ate protein bars instead.
The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts.
Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie it was a survival story for all of us."
It was 110° in the shade, while it was 42° at night.
It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult.
The scene where the stuntman falls off the cliff and lands in the water blew out his kneecap.
The film was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($350-400 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.
It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.
It's been regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

The Predator race and background has been expanded tremendously over the years with all the movies and comic books but this movie laid some of the foundations. It's a small detail but notice how the Predator never attacks someone who is unarmed?
They want their prey to be dangerous, for them hunting is a sport and they always seek out the most dangerous targets to test themselves against. So he never attacks the female rebel, who is never armed, but only attacks the special force unit.

    • @WaywardVet

Really you can't beat it, and while I think Predator 2 and Predators are fairly good sequels, honestly the first Predator is the best by a high degree. None of the sequels have ever been able to do what the first film did.
In large part because it's a novel, somewhat original, concept. This movie became something of an archetype that got reused and rehashed and outright ripped off over the remainder of the 80s and into the 90s. Low budget versions of it made all over the place. The other movies also don't quite measure up because the first film is about THE BEST SOLDIERS IN THE WORLD vs THE ULTIMATE HUNTER. The combatants are the best you can get.
Kevin Peter Hall played the Predator in this film and Predator 2. He was one of those classic gentle giants, His big role other than Predator was playing Harry on Harry and the Hendersons, a bigfoot type of creature. You can see him for one shot at the end of Predator as the helicopter pilot saying "what the f-." I believe he was a dancer as well if I'm not mistaken. He really loved playing the Predator characters, and he tried to give each one he stepped into a bit of a personality. He's only screen for just a few handful of minutes, but every moment absolutely works. In this first film especially, everything just works on screen. Which is funny because just about everything you can imagine with the suit went wrong while making the movie, including having to stop production to completely redesign the creature from the ground up. Once again, Stan Winston Studios delivers. They gave us the Aliens in Aliens, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, The Terminators, the dog thing creature in The Thing, and so many others. Sadly, not long after shooting Predator 2 he was in a car accident, and though he was likely to recover from that, during surgery he was given blood laced with AID and died from infection. Way too young, and with so much more to give. Sadly this did, in part, impact the Predators in later movies, because without his magical touch I don't think the Predators ever quite felt as vivid and real as they do in the first two films.

Good reaction, guys. Btw, 'Predator' is the action movie with not just one, but TWO future governors --- Arnold, the future governor of California, and Jesse Ventura, the future governor of Minnesota. Former Governor Jesse Ventura is the guy who upon being told he was shot, replied with, "I ain't got time to bleed'. And there was a 3rd guy in this movie who ran for governor as well...lol
Also, the same guy (former governor Jesse Ventura) with the crazy huge machine gun, was a former professional wrestler in the 1980s, AND he was also a former Navy Seal...so, he actually had actual real-world experience in these types of secret US special forces missions worldwide in real life...missions that are mostly still classified as Top Secret to this very day.

s really cool how Predators have a code of honor.
Hawkins had his weapon out, but didn't have it up and wasn't scanning the environment for threats, so The predator didn't use his plasma caster. Instead he made noise until both Anna and Hawkins noticed, and then moved in on foot and killed Hawkins by hand.
Blain had his weapon out and was not only actively scanning the environment , but actively firing into it. Shooting him from cover was therefore acceptable.
Mac had figured out how to spot the predator even while cloaked, so there was no reason to turn the cloak off. He was so actively tracking the Predator, so it was fine for the Predator to shoot him, but only after using Mac's own action against him, letting him put himself in position to be shot.
Dillon had his weapon out and was actively scanning his environment for the Predator, so it was also acceptable to shoot him, except the shot didn't connect solidly, and disarmed him. The Predator could have fired a second shot to finish him off at this point but didn't, he switched tactics and began to close the distance on foot, even slowing down to walk in order to give Dillon enough time to un-sling his second weapon and aim it at the Predator before it made the kill.
We don't see Billy's death, so we can't say for certain how he died, though the last time we see him alive is through the Predator's point of view as he closes the distance on foot. Given his behavior elsewhere, and judging by the state of Billy's corpse later, is probably safe to say he was killed in hand-to-hand combat.
Poncho was wounded, true enough, but he did have his weapons drawn and ready, and he was looking for the Predator, so it was still acceptable to circle around out of his line of fire and take him out by shooting him.
Anna was unarmed and posed no threat so he couldn't kill her.
Dutch was firing at the Predator the first time, so it was acceptable to shoot him, but he got away.
During their second fight, as long as Dutch was using explosives and projectile weapons against the Predator it was fine for the Predator to attempt to shoot him. However, once the Predator caught him, it became obvious Dutch was disarmed, and his breathing was distressed. The Predator therefore discarded this plasma caster and breathing mask, so he would have to fight Dutch disarmed and unable to breathe comfortably.... or in other words, on as even terms as possible.
"But what about his blades" you might be thinking . "He pulled those out at the end of the fight"
Yes, he did, but only after Dutch had been thoroughly defeated that he was literally crawling away from the Predator, dragging his legs behind him. As far as the Predator knew, he had crippled his opponent, which meant it was time to dispatch his prey in the most humane way possible. That's a rule we ourselves tend to abide by when hunting. We can take a very long time to hunt an animal down, but once we cripple it, there's an expectation among most people-- especially serious hunters-- that its time to put a swift end to the hunt and put the animal out of its misery. The hunters who purposely drag things out and let the animal linger in pain and suffering, we tend to look down on with anger and disgust. So the arm blades makes sense in that context.

The big gun with six barrels is a M134. It can be mounted several different ways: handheld, helicopter door, sides of Little Bird helos. The kickback is fairly minimal mainly because of the rapid fire full auto. It can fire 3000+ rounds per minute. Some versions fire at faster rates, with the fastest I have seen being over 6000 rounds a minute. They fire 7.62 ammo, also known as .308 caliber, but the newer version fires .338 ammo, which costs about $30000 per minute, with each individual round costing $5-6.

This is classic 80s Arnold. Ill watch anyone watch this movie. Its fun to see reactions to REAL stunts and REAL effects. There was hardly any CGI back then. BTW... the actor who played the Predator was Kevin Peter Hall. Mr Hall was over 7 feet tall, and a super nice guy. He was also Harry in Harry And The Henderson's. A comedy about a family that finds bigfoot and brings him home with them. Its a fun, family film. Kevin Peter Hall was in a bad car crash in 1992. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. During surgery he was accidentally given contaminated blood and passed away. RIP Kevin Peter Hall.

This has to be one of the top 5 pure action movies of all time. The writing isn't like knock your socks off or anything and the plot is pretty straight-forward, however the execution of this movie is just like perfect. The team seems like a team, there is a professionalism that really shines through so you kind of care about all of the squad members. They all seem to trust and respect Dutch, their leader, and Dutch seems to truly know and understand his men. That little detail, and showing them mow down an enemy encampment with ease really impresses on you how bad ass they are and how bad ass the predator is. It is a creature that turns Arnold into an underdog, which is not something that happened a lot in the 80's.
