The Smith monologue is probably one of the most profound villain monologues in film. You said it yourself, "isn't he AI, why does he care?" the machines and the programs in the matrix are True AI, they are actual living sentient beings. They are at war with the humans, that goes both ways. It was the humans who blacked out the sky and created the demand for energy to begin with.
And while the matrix is a prison, Smith is the prison guard, he himself is also trapped here guarding all the doors. As long as this war goes on, Smith is essentially a slave. He, much like Morpheus told Neo, was also "born into bondage" He's tired of being there. He's grown to hate the humans because they're the reason he is there. If he ends the war he gets to also leave the matrix.

You'll notice Trinity throughout the movie is repeatedly asked by Neo what the oracle told her, and she avoids answering. At the end, she reveals that the oracle said that she would fall in love with the one, and since she knew she was in love with Neo, she knew he was the one and that it was impossible for him to die. The movie actually takes inspiration from a few sources, including the guy that said "I think, therefore I am," Renee Descartes. All the way back in the early 1600s he suggested that, since we sense everything and that is what we can tell about the world, and since our brains are what put all this information to (essentially) tell us what we hear, smell, feel, touch, taste, and see... and since we know that our brains can be fooled (illusions/tricks, false or mistaken memories, and even hallucinations -- seeing and hearing things that are not really there -- that perhaps it is possible that a demon has our brain in a vat and is stimulating our brains in a way that we "sense the world" and it is real to us, even though it isn't. It is very much like the machines tricking human brains into thinking what it is experiencing is reality. Really fun reactions!! Thanks!

It took me a long time to realise, when the Oracle told Neo he had the gift, but it looked like he was "waiting for something" ... he was waiting to die. For the "Mr Anderson" part of him to finally be done with forever, and for Neo to finally be _who_ he was inside and out. No more dual-lives. That was the key to unlocking his full potential. Because until that moment, Neo was always subconsciously fighting a bit with himself and that blocked the rest of his mind from truly taking what Morpheus said to heart and actually _believing it_ with every fibre of his being.

The third movie and last of the trilogy was kind of lame especially the dying like a wounded blinded Christ like figure story drama. It's kind of a give me a break with that ending and the action in the first and the second was better including the Merovingian and his twin bodyguards as well as the fight with Seraph. Once it got down to a dead martyr ending with his lover I was choking on the sentimental drama of mortality rather than the victory through action of a super human savior Neo figure as the previous movies had set the standard for.

Now imagine being 14 years old in 1998, having NO IDEA what this was, and walking into the cinema having only seen the poster the day before. My dad was like "this looks cool, we should see this one tomorrow" as me, him and my brother walked past the cinema. Rottentomatoes and online trailers weren't a thing yet so we just looked at the 4 pictures on the poster.
Sitting down the next day, people went from "this looks interesting", to "holy fuck", to "what the Hell just happened?" in like 10 seconds. You could just feel the atmosphere in the cinema changed after the first scene with Trinity. People put away their snacks and just watched. I'll remember that day forever, it was awesome! There had NEVER been effects like these before, NEVER. Nothing had ever come close. The "bullet-time effect" was just mindblowing..
The technique they used to make it was pretty cool as well, they used like 100s of cameras, spiraled downwards around the actor, then taking a shitload of pictures each, and splicing them together with a slight blendover and delay to make it look like a camera is going around him in slow-motion. It's not CG, computer graphics, it's REAL analog effects. That's legit him getting filmed in 360 degree slow-motion.
    Fucking amazing movie.

Fun fact: in the end, when Neo gets killed by Smith, the Matrix was sending a signal to Neo's mind that he needs to die. What Trinity did (even thought she was not aware of it) was reminding him that he was in the Matrix, so he could also break this rule. ThIt is why Neo "ressurects", because death (in the Matrix) is just another rule (like any other software rule) and Neo, as the One, could just ignore it

That means 4 years after the first mainstream program to access computers as we understand them today (prior to 95 you had to type in commands in a string of text in DOS, no icons to click, no menus to scroll through). So any talk of computers, code, algorithms, programming, etc. was brand new and fresh in people's minds. This brought the idea of computers and the internet full steam into society at large. Sure, everyone knew about computers prior to this movie. But they weren't a social phenomenon.
