You’ll benefit a lot for making this choice. I’ll fill you in after the second movie. But continue with the extended versions. They reveal more about the essence of the world and the nature of certain things missed that usually only the book readers know but also it’s not just any book. This man was a master linguist and had a love for mythology and he studied the cultures of many lands. Especially that of Finland, Wales and Ireland and Norway. It’s also where his very fleshed out languages come from too ! He was creating things that was to give back to Anglo Saxons which had their cultures and ancient advanced histories destroyed and lost due to the larger empires rising around them and so on (and cultures of other lands too. He essentially was reviving ancient knowledge and had a deep respect for the beings such as the Fae etc. The elves are very much related to the Tuatha De Danaan too)
When Boromir dies, you can hear an Elvish chorus in the score. Translated they are singing, ‘I do not love the sword for it’s brightness or the arrow for it’s swiftness. I love only that which they defend.’

If someone tried to sell you David’s authentic slingshot, in perfect condition despite being 3000 years old, you might not believe it at first any more than Frodo believed that his uncle’s ring was the mythical Ring of Sauron.

One of the creepiest moments of the Nazgûl (the Black Riders) is when the hobbits see the silhouette of the one rider in the forest- where they see breath of the horse but none from the Rider. It’s a subtle detail that drives home that the Ringwraiths are neither living nor dead.

I wish they went more into Gimli's gift from Galadriel. People think it's weird that he'd ask for a strand of hair. First thing he initially says no and she persists. In the book he tells her that his intention is to forge a gem to be an heirloom to be passed down throughout his families generations. I love it because it represents Gimli's personal growth. Dwarves and Elves naturally don't like each other but this is the point in the story where Gimli, and Legolas by extension, begin to put aside their prejudice and start to become friends. Legolas knows if Galadriel agreed to such an offer it REALLY means something.
There is even a connection to real life history. A woman giving a lock of her hair to a man was considered a sign of great affection during the Middle Ages.
Yeah, unfortunately most people in the last couple of generations don’t understand the significance of keeping, or being gifted, a lock of hair, so they just think Gimli’s request is strange.

Oh they were great friends at some point but crazy things during those previous ages ripped that asunder and the presence of Morgoth’s energy wasn’t helping much either. But thanks to Finrod and His sister Galadriel annnd even Celebrimbor and his buddy Narvi were what helped reforge the bonds ever stronger!!
Gimli starts out by assuring us that "here's one Dwarf she won't ensnare so easily." To better understand the significance of Galadriel's gift to Gimli, you need to read The Silmarillion, Tolkien's master history of Middle-earth. The book version of LOTR gives Gimli numerous occasions to defend Galadriel's honor from various would-be critics of the "Elf-witch."
You’re right about Frodo being a better choice as the ring bearer. He’s good natured and Hobbits in general are simple people who don’t desire power, so less easily corrupted.

And yet it pretty much ruins Frodo too. I appreciate his sympathy for Gollum because he recognizes himself in Gollum. And who really is responsible for the final victory?
Sam is really the only one who seemed unaffected by the Ring. No one else could even touch it without being affected.
My ex-wife was VERY impressed on how they made the ring an actual character in the movie. It was not passive. And I think that reflects how the books wanted it to be.
@@davidmichaelson1092 Book Frodo is sterner with Gollum than he is in the films. He shows him mercy and kindness but he never takes any nonsense from Gollum and is never manipulated by him. Neither does he identify with him to the extent that the films show.
I'm not happy with how the films portrayed Frodo, to be honest. I like them in general but this was a major flaw.
@@philippalinton5850 You are right about the book Frodo. I kind of liked the modification, but Frodo and Sam were never my favorite characters...I know I am unusual about that. I even have a friend that named a son Samwise.
My least favorite part was how they treat Gimli's character in the second and third movie. He is supposed to be a badass but they turn him into comic relief. But all three movies are great overall. And I even liked the Hobbit movies, though they got pretty cheesy at times. But they also introduced some good backstory.
and yet smeagol and deagol went straight for the kill the first 5 min with the ring, something I still dont understand to this day yet.
Fun fact: When Ian McKellen (the actor who plays Gandalf) hit his head in the beginning of the movie it wasn't scripted, he actually hit his head on accident. But he acted so well through it that they decided to keep it in the movie

Not-so Fun Fact: Though it's not _technically_ on screen, in the scene where Sam is wading out to Frodos boat he stepped on a shard of glass the crew hadn't caught when they cleared the area previously and it cut straight into his foot.

@@backisgabbeYT It wasn't a mistake per se, he was supposed to miss by a wide margin and they would use clever camera angles to make it look like it was close. But it got thrown at him and he blocked it. Dangerous, but made that fight infinitely cooler lol.
The fight between Gandalf and the Balrog was a closer fight than it appeared. Both are immortal beings called Maiar, roughly equal in power. Thousands of years earlier, the Balrogs were Maiar that were corrupted by Morgoth. Gandalf is a Maiar that was sent to Middle Earth and took the form of a wizard, along with Saruman (the White), Radagast (the Brown) and two other blue wizards.
And most importantly Sauron the most powerful Maiar

I want to mention that the 3 of Galadriel's hairs is quite the important gift. According to the lore: "Feanor was so inspired by Galadriel's grace and beauty, that he wished to use strands of her hair in the making of his three Silmarils, the most precious gems ever created in Middle Earth".
...But she refused and gave the hairs to Gimli.
Yeah Gimili's favor was asked out of love and had no malice or deceit in it. least i was told
What must also be said is that Feanor was the strongest and most powerful elve to have ever lived. So powerful in fact that Melkor/Morgoth feared one on one combat with Feanor. And Melkor/Morgoth was an immortal God like being that was among many other things the master of Sauron, who in turn was his strongest general, before Morgoth got bannished into the void beyond the world. Morgoth literally means ,,enemy of the world''.
But Feanor had a dark burning fire in him. And Galadriel saw this and so refused to give him her hair for the Silmaril.
In Gimli however, ages later, she saw kindness and a good heart. So when he said, that if he would wish something of her, then it would be one hair, she not only granted his (technically hypothetical) wish, but gave him three hairs.
Furthermore: Legolas, an elve who has lived for some time by that point, also knows about the history behind that gift. And so, when they talked about the gifts, and Gimli spoke about the three hairs, that was an icebreaker moment for Legolas, which immensly strengthened their friendship.

The best movie series ever. Boramir’s death did me in. His last words ‘I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king’…..had me a sobbing mess!

Gandalfs death, Boramir, when Sam almost drowns. Ugh...I cry no matter how times I've seen it, and that that's a lot.
I love that when he does eventually die, he does so looking into Aragorn's face, and Aragorn is looking back - it's super important for both characters. Boromir realizes that Aragorn means his promise, and he doesn't have to die despairing - he puts all his hope and faith for the future of man in Aragorn, and is able to die with that renewed hope, peacefully. Aragorn did mean his promise, but I don't think he knew that he meant it until he felt the full weight of receiving Boromir's faith on the brink of death. His own faith in the future of man is rekindled by Boromir's trust. He's realizing in that moment that even though Boromir DID fall to the persuasion of the ring, he was STILL honorable and worth saving, and Aragorn DID care for him - so he could do the same for the rest of mankind, despite their flaws. They were worth saving, and worth leading.
One of the main reasons that Frodo carrys the ring so well is because Hobbits are so humble in nature. They only care about food, tobacco and ale. They don’t care for power, strength or influence which is what the ring uses to leverage men, elves and dwarfs.

Hey guys, I recently found your channel and am really liking it. Sooo…I’m watching The Fellowship of the Rings reaction, and you pointed out the color-palette on the wall behind you from Beauty and the Beast. The woman who painted that (and more or less started the practice in the industry 32 years ago) was my art director Lisa Keene (no relation to Glen Keane, supervising animator of Beast). Those palettes really did help balance the color tone of the movie…Lisa is a goddamn genius.

For a first time watch, you really picked up on the details...I think a lot of people get lost in the storyline as there are so many characters and plots going on. Great reaction, and even this 1 hour version got me welling-up at the emotional moments as a long-time fan of the books, and the movies are a masterpiece.
The Ring gives power according to one's nature. For Frodo, Gollum, and Isuldur ( king, but an ordinary man), it would just turn the wearer invisible. For someone who already has magical power like Gandalf, Saruman, or Galadriel, it would magnify their powers.
Yes but Numenoreans were literal ubermenches which is why Sauron himself when witnessing the glimmering glory of each noble hearted knight standing before him by the tens of thousands and even with Sauron fully embodies the ghouls and other monsters by the thousands turned tail and run. In the books isildur was going to actually give it to Elrond and that’s where he ended up being waylayed I believe but I know for a fact he had enough of it and found it too much for him so he was going to return back to Elrond for help
@@Makkaru112 Isildur was Numenorean, but the Ring still turned him invisible when he donned it. Maybe someone way further up the Numenorean line like Elros could have wielded the Ring to its full potential.
Isildur was going north to take up the Kingship of Arnor. He stayed on in Gonder until his nephew was old enough to take over as king as Anarion's heir. Never heard in the books that he planned to give up the Ring.
BTW, the massive host of Numenor that Sauron was led by Ar-Pharazon and was mostly destroyed with him when Numenor was destroyed..
I'm a massive fan of the books and I can say without doubt they did them justice, loved the films just as much. Legolas and gimli have the best friendship.
though, they unfortunately left a lot out, such as Tom Bombadil... but that would've made the whole series at least 12 hours long if they didn't

Mmmm IDK if I can say they did the books justice. Actually they didn't do the books justice AT ALL. The story is changed and there are many things left out or not mentioned that are important to understanding the overall story better. But as a movie adaptation it his highly entertaining.
LOTR is one of exceptionally rare movies you sit watching whole 3 hours and once it ends, you're left with "What, it's already over?!"

Tolkien deserves so much credit for creating Middle Earth and all its amazing characters and this movie served the book well. A genius book and genius movie.
It truly is. More than many realize. And Skyrim, D&D, Elder Scrolls and so on wouldn’t exist if his works came into the public sphere. Ever experience The Silmarillion or perhaps Children Of Hùrin, Lay Of Leithien, Beren & Lùthien, Fall Of Gondolin, Morgoth’s Rings, Laws And Customs Of The Eldar?❤❤❤❤

What amazes me is how connected you feel to all the characters after only one viewing. Within 4 hours, you understand the lands, the people, the weaknesses and strengths of indivisduals. You understand the history and why things happened the way they did. The way the script and storyline was written to translate from the books is nothing short of a miracle.
I often wonder about that, since by the time the films came out I'd read The Lord of the Rings 11 times and knew everything in them pretty intimately. So I've never gotten to experience the films without preexisting knowledge about them. It's why I've been on a LotR reaction video binge, it's fun seeing the overall effectiveness of the film's story telling.
Ever since I discovered movie reactions during lockdowns, I’ve loved watching people react to these movies. It’s almost like I’m watching them again for the today time. This trilogy is truly perfection. From the acting, muaic, cinematography, visuals., etc. Cannot wait to watch the other videos. Buckle up! It’s gonna be a ride!

I was captured by the books 40 years ago and read all three of them over the Fourth of July weekend. I have never had such an incredible feeling as I had when I finished the last one.
Just a important suggestion when watching these movies.....you have to pay close attention ALL of the time or you will miss the details that explain the story. Most of the questions you're asking were explained by parts you missed in the dialogue.
Greatest trilogy of all time, nothing else comes close. Excited for you guys to watch the rest
deeper lore version for you: Galadriel's gift to Gimli has a deeper meaning behind it, Galadriel is one of the 2-3 most powerful and wise elves remaining in Middle Earth since the time the land was young. She was born in a place called Valinor, or the Undying land... which is basically the place of residence of the Valar, the local pantheon, the local "gods" as you may call them. Back then, the world was not illuminated by the sun, the moon and the stars, but rather by 2 trees of gold and silver, Telperion and Laurelin. It is said that Galadriel's hair had somehow captured some of the shine of those two trees. Her uncle Fëanor, who was a great king of the Elven people and also arguably their greatest craftsman to ever live, asked/demanded that she give him a lock of hair, so that he could use it to fashion 3 gems that would shine of the same light as the trees. Sensing his pride and arrogance, she refused his demand, tree times. He stopped asking and made the gems anyway, managing to complete the task he had set for himself even without her hair. Around these 3 gems, the possession of which became the driving force for many of the greats in the world, entire wars that lasted for centuries exploded. The gems actively shaped the fate of the races of middle earth to the point that the aforementioned Valar got involved directly. During these times, events surrounding the gems brought about the traditional enmity between Dwarves and Elves... the same enmity that Gimli still feels towards them. That enmity however does not survive his encounter with the wise Galadriel, whom Gimli basically falls platonically in love with. By giving him 3 of her hair, Galadriel is opening a door, offering an olive branch that might one day close the gap that divides these two races. Legolas, himself being an Elven prince and centuries old, knows of the story, as it shaped the lives of all Elves, and his subtle smile is possibly the first act of acknowledgment and reconciliation. it is also a way for Peter Jackson, the director of the film, to give a nod to all of the fans who know these facts and backstories... a way to make us feel seen, and to make us appreciate just how deeply the makers of the film respect the books and larger universe created by Tolkien.
The thing with the hair may seem weird, but there is a significance to it in real life as well as in the lore of the story. In real life, it was not uncommon for wives, fiancés, or even girlfriends to give their men (who were going off to war), a lock of their hair as a keepsake, particularly in WWI, which Tolkien fought in. The lore part of it comes into play in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's tales of the creation of Arda, the Undying Lands of Valinor, and Middle Earth. Galadriel is many, many thousands of years old, and was born in Valinor before the sun and moon were even created. At the time, the world was lit by two trees, one gold and one silver which would shine at different times from each other, but would shine together once a day when one would fade and the other brighten. Galadriel's hair was said to look like the light of the mingled light from the two trees, which may have inspired Feanor, a master craftsman and heir to the high king of the Noldor, to craft the Silmaril's which were three jewels that captured the light of the two trees, one golden light, one silver light, and one co-mingled light. Fëanor had a bit of a thing for Galadriel and begged her for her hair three different times, which she rejected because she could perceive the inner darkness of his heart and rejected him, which made them "un-friends" after that. There is a lot more to the lore than that, so this is the super crib-notes version. But the point is, it was VERY significant that she granted Gimli three of her hairs to a dwarf, when she would not to the son of her king many thousands of years ago.
How old is Galadriel during the War of the Ring? I have looked in many different sources and depending on where you look, she’s anywhere from 1789-20,000 years old. 6,000 seems too young as it would make her close in age to Elrond, who I know is much younger than her.(which wouldn’t make sense even if she was 690 years older making 6960! As she was around long before Elrond was even born and time was experience differently to say the LEAST as there is a lot to go into on that subject lol.) She was born during the Years of the Trees & back then the years were something like 9X longer than a solar year so I understand the math is hard, especially since she isn’t given an exact birth year. But it is said that Finarfin, her father, was born in Y.T. 1230, so I would assume she was born sometime within 1000 years of then (being generous).
Basically, I’m wondering what the most accurate range is for her age during the events of Lord of the Rings. I’ll also add that Galadriel is was around before the ents even existed (of which Treebeard is 15,000 years old so she’s OLDER than Treebeard/Fangorn) or very close to when they were “created” by Yavannah and probably had much knowledge to do with such things and or direct knowledge of what happened. Probably through an early prototype of her mirror or simply another dream that made her long for middle earth all over again ontop of the yearning she already had to go there and explore. Nothing to do with Fëanor’s oath and all that jazz.
Just going from the Appendices (and maybe Silmarillion) she would have to be at least 9000+ years older than Elrond Elrond was born near the end of the First Age, Galadriel was adult before the destruction of the Trees.
Actually, more than that: I just checked, and the Second Age ended in SA 3441. So an elf born literally at the end of the First Age (FA 590) is 3441+3018 = 6459 years old when Frodo leaves for Rivendell. Elrond was born in FA 532, so adds 58 years to get 6517. Elves are mature at 100, so Galadriel adds at leas 632 to Elrond's age, to be at least 7149, and possibly quite a bit more (as attested by other comments.)
One fic had Maglor(Elrond’s Adoptive Father, Maedhros was also adoptive father alongside Maglor, they were the eldest sons of Fëanor) - One fic had as much older than Galadriel; I wondered how we knew, and it was pointed out to me that Maglor was the second oldest son of the first son of Finwë, while Galadriel is the youngest child of the third son of Finwë. So, yeah.
Note that the second age was the LONGEST and again time was experienced very differently back then too aside from the internal clock of elves working very differently, she’s definitely older as far as the world and the other beings that age far faster around her.
I also remind you all that she’s older than the sun and the moon and witnessed and most likely even helped in the Valar’s crafting of the last fruit and flower of the two trees of Valinor. She was the most involved with learning everything possible from them.
I hope they saw this reply, and read it, as you took the time to add so much of the lore. I always like to see that people get the backstory behind Gimli‘s gift, and also point out that this was significant for people in real life as well, as this custom has fallen out of practice between people, who often find Gimli’s gift odd or even creepy.
One thing the movies don’t cover is Sauron wasn’t like deformed, he actually could change his appearance to go about without them knowing and influence humanity and the elves. Also if it helps sort of think of the ring as a Horcrux (part of me does think she borrowed this aspect) as it ties Sauron to middle earth and the two are connected and basically alive in a way
Great reaction! If you haven't already watched them, I recommend you both wear headsets for the rest of the trilogy to really appreciate the score by Howard Shore. It truly is second to none and demands that level of respect.

Keep in mind that the Ring is literally worming its way into Frodo's mind and influencing him to be taking it out and putting it on. It's not that he necessarily *wants* to do those things.
Edit: Great read on Boromir. He's a good person, but he's very vulnerable to being twisted by the ring. He would use it to help his people, who have been losing a war of attrition against Mordor for a generation at this point. He obviously cares A LOT about the hobbits--half his dialog is about keeping them safe and healthy. But he's still a man and those strong desires make him corruptable.

To clarify things about Elrond and therefore his Twin Brother Elros were half elven twin brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents(Eärendil and Elwing) both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was a few thousand years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a uncommon thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤
Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there!
When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No game of thrones. No Skyrim. No dungeons and dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter!

Because people expect some sort of resolution at the end of each movie. Hollywood has trained us that way.

I love how yall said you have been on this journey with them for decades. You get so invested to see it through. It's how I felt at 11 years old when I went to go so this movie when it came out. Up until 1-2am in the morning and I wanted more. I didn't know anything about lord of the rings. When the trailers came out I always thought it was a scary movie.
For historical context, locks of hair used to be a thing soldiers took with them to war back in WW1. obviously its weird by today's standards, but we have modern technology and all kinds of ways to stay connected. Little things like a lock of hair probably meant a lot to them.
Tolkien also fought in WW1.
This movie is special to me, it was the last great movie i watched with my Dad before he passed away.
Every time i watch it i get the feeling my Dad is watching it with me.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the Hobbit first and it became so very popular that he then wrote the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. After that he wrote the Silmarillion which is a prequel to all of the other ones. He was a Christian and a scholar along with his other friends who would gather together and have lengthy discussions in the library of the University. They were forced into going to war in WW1 and he referred his little cottage to the Shire and what it took to defend that for they were in England when this all occurred. If you sift between the lines, you can see the Christian themes running throughout the entire storyline
Gotta say Galadriel definitely did some growing up from Rings of Power to Lord of the Rings. lol

They are Frodo’s cousins- this is why they are loyal and travel with him. They are still technically hobbit teens, which is why they do some stupid stuff. And as Gandalf said about Gollum, they have a part to play yet. The journey will grow them up. It’s a great trilogy. It was all filmed in New Zealand. My husband traveled there for work. He saw the hobbit homes. Pretty cool. We had to wait a year for the next movie but it was so worth it. You’ll love it. It’s a great story! Good reactions!
so I would like to share some non-spoiler lore to help with your overall understanding:
1. the battle at the beginning transpired differently in the novel. For some reason, Jackson chose NOT to include Gil Galad at all and glosses over the actual hand to hand fight between Elendil. Onscreen, it looks like Sauron tossed Elendil aside like a child tosses a doll to the floor. In the reality of the story, Gil Galad (the greatest elf of the age, and seven feet, four inches tall) and Elendil (the greatest man of the age, himself seven feet tall) went head to head with sauron. While Sauron DID, in fact fatally wound BOTH of them, they in turn inflicted serious injury on Sauron. Esilidur then took up the broken sword and cut the ring off of Sauron's hand, thereby severing the spirit of Sauron from the physical world.
2. You noticed how Bilbo had aged when Frodo comes to Rivendell. Part of this is not having the ring anymore, and part of it is that 17 years had elapsed since Bilbo's 111th birthday. This doesn't really come across in the film very well.
3. New Zealand is where all of these films were shot. It is breathtakingly beautiful on screen. You can actually visit several of the places where certain parts were filmed.
4. Some others in the comments have pointed out that the Balrog is a Maiar just like Gandalf and thus they are roughly equivalent. In the novel, Gandalf actually puts a spell on one of the doors to try and delay the Balrog, and the Balrog responds with a counter-spell so terrible that it destroys the door out right and physically weakens Gandalf. Essentially, the Balrog doesn't want to allow the intrusion of another being that is essentially it's equal to pass through Moria without a response.
5. You talked about how a lot of the things in the prologue were basically just myth and legend. One of the reasons Gandalf needed to do research up on these things is that he had only existed in his human form in middle earth for 2000 years at that point. Also, during those 17 years, he was searching for Gollum.
23:54 Saruman has MANY cheat codes in this film 🤷🏾♂️😂😈 Even though he’s a villain, he’s my favorite character in the trilogy!
